From Trump's tariffs to bozo eruptions, our 'recovering partisans' break down the campaign's second week

Canada was spared  Wednesday when the U.S. President Donald Trump announced new punishing tariffs on the rest of the world. But many Canadian industries are already feeling the pinch from tariffs Trump had imposed earlier, and big job losses are on the horizon.  This week, Liberal Leader Mark Carney headed to Ottawa and put on his prime minister's hat to respond to the crisis, just as Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was attempting a different strategy to address the Trump threat — to the country and to his own election campaign. This week, our panel of “recovering partisans” joins us to discuss the campaign's second week, from Trump's tariffs and who they politically benefit, to the policy offerings and the response  — or lack of response — to candidates saying things they simply shouldn't.  But first, Abacus Data's David Coletto gives us the lie of the land: what's moved, what hasn't and what to make  of it. In this episode: David Christopherson, the former NDP MP for Hamilton Centre; Kristina Michaud, the outgoing Bloc Quebecois MP for Avignon—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia; Karen Vecchio, the outgoing Conservative MP for Elgin—Middlesex—London; John McKay, the outgoing Liberal MP for Scarborough—Guildwood; and David Coletto, the CEO of Abacus Data. Hosted by Althia Raj.  This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Kevin Sexton. Matt Hearn is our sound engineer. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel. Some of the audio clips this week were sourced from CPAC, CBC, CTV, Global, CNBC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN and ABC.

John McKay in conversation with David Eastaugh https://thejohnmckay.bandcamp.com/album/sixes-and-sevens McKay's influence lives on; many of the most influential guitarists of the past four decades credit him as a major influence - Geordie from Killing Joke, Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain, U2's The Edge, Thurston Moore, Johnny Marr and even the two guitarists - The Cure's Robert Smith and Magazine's John McGeoch - who followed him in The Banshees.

McKay's burgeoning status as the anti-guitar hero was halted when he and Banshees drummer Kenny Morris - at odds with Siouxsie and bassist Steve Severin - fled the band just after the start of a tour supporting the group's second album, Join Hands. It was a weekly music paper scandal, later the subject of a BBC documentary, and Siouxsie's vitriol working its way into the lyrics of a later Banshees b-side, "Drop Dead / Celebration". Aside from a solitary single on Marc Riley's In Tape label nearly a decade later, no music was heard from McKay again. So it comes as a major surprise to learn of a pile of excellent recordings made in the years just after he left The Banshees, unheard by all but a very few, some of which feature drummer Kenny Morris, plus Mick Allen from Rema Rema, Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and longer-term collaborator Graham Dowdall and John's wife Linda . . . the latter three of whom are now sadly deceased.

Sixes And Sevens is an historic lost album. Brazenly genius and bearing fair claim as the lost treasure of the post-punk era, the album collects eleven studio tracks, carefully mastered from original tapes. It's a masterpiece which best speaks for itself.

The 1973 season did not end the way JK McKay and his Trojans teammates had hoped it would. Against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl USC was tied with the Buckeyes, 14-14 at the half. But the guys from Ohio blitzed the Men of Troy in the 2nd half and won handily, 42-21 ending SC's season on a down note. But on January 1, 1975... a chance for redemption. Down 17-10 late in the 4th against those same Buckeyes, Pat Haden connected with his best friend, JK McKay in the corner of the end zone from 38 years out to cut the lead to 17-16... and after a successful 2-point conversion, SC had a lead they would not relinquish. The 5th ranked Trojans won the Rose Bowl and a few hours later, after a Notre Dame win over Alabama, they were National Champions thanks to the co-MVP's of the game: Haden and McKay. JK had quite a career playing for his father, John McKay, at USC and then turned that into a career in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers... also coached by his legendary father. For a time, he didn't know if he wanted to play for the elder McKay. Heck, for a time, he didn't even know what to call him... Dad or Coach. But in the end, he followed his dad to SC and enjoyed a few years in the NFL with him as well and now, 50 years after being named an MVP of the Rose Bowl, a stadium he grew up in, he joins us on the Past Our Prime podcast to talk about his days as a Trojan and what they meant to his entire family including his forever quote-able father; how his dad straightened him out in 8th grade and had him pick between a Catholic High School or a military institution; and how he and USC QB Pat Haden became friends 50+ years ago and remain so today, and what JK does every so often to remind Pat about a certain connection they had. Don Coryell changed the way offenses were played and is one of the 5 most innovative coaches in the history of Pro Football. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is long overdue and took place this weekend. What he did at San Diego State and then with the Cardinals was change the way football was played. The man who helped develop the power-I for John McKay as an assistant at Southern Cal ditched the game's conservative 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach and dragged the rest of the football world kicking and screaming into a new era where the pass became the thing. Most known for his Air Coryell offenses in San Diego, his legacy goes way back before that. We take you behind the scenes into one of the greatest minds in Pro Football History. Today's guest on the Mushroom Society Series on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast is with retired NFL Coach Al Saunders. Coach Saunders began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC under John McKay from 1970–71 and served as receivers coach for the University of Missouri's Fiesta Bowl team in 1972. Saunders spent 1973 through 1975 as a play-caller and offensive backfield coach at Utah State. He then spent six seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California. He guided the Golden Bears to set 32 NCAA, conference, and school records and finished each season ranked in the top ten in the nation in passing. His final collegiate stop was in 1982 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee where he built an explosive, record-setting offense. His first NFL head coaching position came with the San Diego Chargers as interim head coach in 1986 following the resignation of Don Coryell. He spent two full seasons as the Chargers' head coach after previously working as receivers coach in 1983-84 and assistant head coach in 1985-86 for what was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of modern football. In 1985, San Diego's "Air Coryell" led the NFL in passing and total offense for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. From 1989 until 1998, Saunders was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Saunders worked for 10 winning seasons under the highly respected head coach Marty Schottenheimer again as a part of a top-performing offense. Saunders joined the St. Louis Rams coaching staff under the legendary Dick Vermeil. Serving as associate head coach and receivers coach with the Rams (1999-2000), he helped create one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses that the NFL had ever seen, and eventually helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. Leading the NFL in virtually every significant offensive category, "The Greatest Show on Turf" established numerous NFL records for scoring and offensive production. When Vermeil came out of retirement in 2001, Saunders reunited with his old mentor and former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator until Vermeil's final retirement in 2006. Under Saunders' direction as coordinator, the Chiefs offense was the most productive unit in the entire NFL during that 5-year span. 46 franchise records for offense production were established and no team scored more points (2,175), gained more yards (30,470), or scored more touchdowns (262) during that time. Coach Saunders was ranked as the #1 Offensive Coordinator in the past 25 years in the NFL by ESPN and in 2005, and was named USA Today's Offensive Coach of the Year. Coach Saunders finished out his career as an assistant with Redskins, Rams, Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins, and retired after his stint with the Cleveland Browns Shownotes: -Start with John McKay -Being organized -Don't tell - Teach -Treat everyone as a number one draft choice -The job of a coach is to make all players the best they can be -You can't teach experience -Create an environment people enjoy being in -Take the positive environment and enthusiasm to the field -How the best approach the game -Dealing with your coaches -Developing a top offense -Don't ask players to do what they can't do -Protecting the QB Link to all Mushroom Society Episodes and COOL Clinic Speakers: https://soundcloud.com/user-804678956/sets/the-c-o-o-l-clinic-speakers Learn from COOL Clinic Coaches: https://coachtube.com/coolclinic
