Er entschied sich aber bewusst nicht tiefer in die Kunstwelt einzutauchen, studierte zunächst Schauspiel in London und Hamburg, dann Germanistik, Kunstgeschichte und Journalistik an der Universität Hamburg, arbeitete einige Jahre als freier Journalist im Hamburger Medienzirkus und entschloss sich 2004 eine lang gereifte Idee in die Tat umzusetzen und eröffnete eine Galerie für zeitgenössische Fotografie im Kontorhaus-Viertel in Hamburg. Durch gute Presse und ein gutes Programm machte die Robert Morat Galerie schnell von sich Reden. Fünf Jahre später war er bereits Mitglied der »AIPAD« (The Association of International Photography Art Dealers) in New York und zeigte seine Künstler regelmäßig auf internationalen Kunstmessen wie der »Paris Photo«, der »Photo London« und der »Unseen« in Amsterdam. Was ist das Schlüssel zu ausdrucksstarken Bildern? Empathie und Intuition, sagt Steffen Rothammel. In seinem Buch „Das Gefühl ist der Auslöser“ zeigt er, wie man seiner Fotografie mehr Tiefe und Seele verleiht. Steffen Rothammel sagt: „Nur wenn Sie Ihr Innerstes nach außen kehren, können Sie richtig gut sein. Denn dann verschwenden Sie keine Zeit an eine Maske.“ Das Thema Technik ist schnell abgehakt. Nur auf den ersten Seiten seines Buches „Das Gefühl ist der Auslöser“* geht Steffen Rothammel auf das Werkzeug des Fotografen – sprich die Kamera – ein. Er erklärt den Zusammenhang zwischen Blende, Belichtungszeit und ISO. Letztlich betont er aber, dass die technische Beherrschung des Instruments vor allem wichtig ist, damit man das Wissen später in den Hintergrund rücken kann. Dazu passend zitiert er ein japanisches Sprichwort: „Wer schön schreiben kann, schreibt auch mit einem schlechten Pinsel schön.“ Der Schlüssel zu packenden Bildern liegt aber nicht in technischer Perfektion, sondern in den Gefühlen, die man in ihnen transportiert. Empathie und Intuition sind entscheidend, so Rothammel. Was das konkret bedeutet, das erklärt der Münchener Fotograf anhand von zahlreichen Beispielen. Er taucht dafür tief in sein eigenes Archiv. Anhand von Momenten und Erlebnissen während seiner Reisen rund um den Globus führt er ebenso anschaulich wie unterhaltsam durch das Buch. Es geht darum, wie man auf Reisen nicht nur als Tourist an der Oberfläche kratzt, sondern tief in fremde Kulturen eintaucht, um Land und Leute frei von Klischees und Vorurteilen wirklich kennenzulernen. Die Kamera und die Fotografie sind dabei wichtige Werkzeuge. Die Kamera ist für Rothammel nicht nur ein Werkzeug, um Motive festzuhalten und Erinnerungen zu schaffen. Vielmehr sieht er in ihr auch ein Vehikel zur eigenen Persönlichkeitsentwicklung. Um Menschen unterwegs im Alltagsleben fotografieren zu können, muss man Kontakt zu ihnen aufbauen. Mit den rüden Methoden eines Paparazzi kommt man nicht weit. Vielmehr geht es darum, so genannte „soft skills“ zu entwickeln. Neben Einfühlungsvermögen zählen auch Kommunikation und Mut dazu. Auf fremde Menschen zuzugehen, stellt für viele Hobbyfotografen eine große Hürde dar. Vor allem, wenn auch noch Sprachbarrieren hinzukommen. Die Fotografie kann dabei helfen, Ängsten und Schüchternheit zu überwinden. Rothammel argumentiert, dass der kreative Prozess alle Sinne mit einbezieht. Fesselnde Fotografie setzt Erfahrung, Erlebnisse und Fantasie voraus. Vor jedem Drücken auf den Auflöser sollte man sich fragen: Was möchte ich mit dem Bild ausdrücken? Aus der Antwort auf die Frage leiten sich dann die Wahl der Mittel ab – zum Beispiel Brennweite, Kameraeinstellungen oder Bildausschnitt. Rothammel: „Die Umsetzung einer gelernten Technik in ein Artefakt bedarf einer Idee.“ Mit seinem Ansatz steht Rothammel in der Tradition von Autoren wie David DuChemin („Die Seele der Kamera“*) oder Ibarionex Perello („Mein Foto: Mit Leidenschaft und Planung zum eigenen fotografischen Workflow“*), die sich ebenfalls mit der Seele der Fotografie beschäftigen. Er ermuntert dazu, ausgetretene Pfade zu verlassen und stattdessen der eigenen Stimme zu folgen. Nur so gelange man zu Bildern, die sich von der Masse abheben: „Nur wenn Sie Ihr Innerstes nach außen kehren, können Sie richtig gut sein. Denn dann verschwenden Sie keine Zeit an eine Maske.“ Rothammel plädiert dafür, seinen eigenen Weg in der Fotografie zu finden und diesen konsequent zu verfolgen – auch wenn das bedeutet, gängige Regeln zu brechen: „Versuchen Sie von Anfang an, sich in Ihren Aufnahmen und in Ihrer Fotografie selbst zu suchen.“ Das Buch gibt einen wunderbaren Blick in den Werkzeugkasten eines Fotografen. Die Stilmittel wie zum Beispiel Perspektiven, Licht, Farben, Geometrie, Textur oder Kontraste werden schlüssig erklärt. Je nach Situation hilft der geübte Umgang mit ihnen, die gewünschte Bildwirkung zu erzielen – „die Kunst, das zu nutzen, was Ihnen zu Verfügung steht, macht den Kern der Fotografie aus. Sehnen Sie sich nicht nach etwas, was gerade nicht da ist“. Garniert mit Zitaten von Meisterfotografen wie Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon, Elliot Erwitt ist das Buch eine gelungene Einleitung, dafür wie man mit Gefühl bessere Bilder macht. In this episode, Oli's guest is curator, lecturer and fine photography consultant Zelda Cheatle together with Iris, her gorgeous rescue podenco. Over the years Zelda has worked with some of the most influential photographers. In June 2019, Zelda curated the Photographic Dog Show in Battersea, London. The Dog inspired show included pictures for sale from Rory Carnegie, Elliot Erwitt, David George, Barry Lewis, Clare Park, Maud Sulter, Martin Usborne, Dougie Wallace and Bruce Weber. Ibarionex Perello - The Candid Frame Today’s featured guest is Ibarionex Perello Ibarionex is a street and portrait photographer based out of LA California. With over 25 years of experience in the industry he has become a well-known figure among modern photographers. He has authored 5 booked on photography and has been published in several blogs and magazines. You may know Ibarionex from his podcast The Candid Frame which started in 2006 and you can tune in for a new episode each week. Ibarionex Perello is a Los Angeles-based photographer, writer and host & producer of The Candid Frame photography podcast. He has over 25 years of experience in the photographic industry and his work has appeared in numerous publications including Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photo Pro, Rangefinder, Popular Photography and Photoshop User magazines. He has authored over 5 books including Chasing the Light: Improving Your Photography Using Available Light. For the last 9 years has been hosting and producing The Candid Frame, a popular interview podcast which has featured conversations with photographs including Elliot Erwitt, Dan Winters , Mary Ellen Mark and others. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Art Center College of Design. He currently is a production fellow for MaximumFun, which produces NPR’s Bullseye with Jesse Thorne.

Cheryl Dunn is a documentary filmmaker and photographer who was born in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University with a BFA in Art History. After moving to NYC in the mid 80's, she spent a large part of her career documenting city streets; and the people who strive to leave their mark there from graffiti writers, artists, skaters, boxers, bikers, protesters, and assorted characters.  In the late 90's she began to focus on filmmaking, creating classic films about artists of her generation who have influenced the realities of urban life through their own work. Her films have played at numerous film festivals including, Tribeca, Edinburgh, Rotterdam, Hotdocs, Los Angeles, Havana, and on PBS. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums including The Tate Modern in London, Deitch Projects in New York, and the “Art in the Streets "exhibition at the Geffen Contemporary MOCA. Cheryl was one of the subjects in the documentary, book, & traveling museum exhibition "Beautiful Losers". She has had two books of her photographs published; Bicycle Gangs of New York, and Some Kinda Vocation.  Her  feature documentary “Everybody Street, New york City“ is about photographers who have used New York City streets as a major subject in their work, world-premiered at HotDocs in Toronto in spring 2013.
