Writer-director Jonathan L. Bowen started a film review site in high school, which he continued into college, ultimately posting more than 600 movie reviews. After moving to L.A. to pursue a film career, he started making independent music videos, then established a production company, JLB Media Productions, that specializes in business-to-business marketing and web videos. His music videos, short films, and features have been screened at more than 50 film festivals nationwide. His work includes: "The Devils Matchmaker," a short that won Best Short Shorts Comedy/Romance at the Eugene International Film Festival. Jonathan wrote and directed Amy Alyson Fans, a feature-length romantic comedy. I've seen his most recent movie, The Comic Shop, which he co-wrote and directed, and can tell you, as someone who's written more than a few superhero cartoons, I found it to be a funny and emotionally rich story about folks struggling to survive in the dog-eat-dog world of comic books. Jonathan's also written two books, Anticipation: The Real Life Story of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which was written before Jonathan graduated high school, and its sequel, Revenge: The Real Life Story of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. https://www.directorbowen.com/
We are kicking off the summer by returning to the box office top 10 for the first time since Runaway Bride with one of the 1999's big summer blockbusters, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me! Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was the 4th-highest grossing movie of 1999, behind Toy Story 2, The Sixth Sense, and The Phantom Menace, opening on June 11 and taking in $55 million that weekend, going on to make $206 million at the domestic box office on a $33 million budget. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers, The Spy Who Shagged Me saw Heather Graham stepping in to the Powers Girl role, replacing Elizabeth Hurley. The hugely anticipated and hyped sequel to the 1997 original, the movie came in with sky high expectations. The results were, well...mixed. But there's no question that Austin Powers was a huge cultural milestone, so we wanted to see how it held up. Helping us get the summer off to the most shagadelic start possible is actor, writer, podcaster, and activist Siri Dahl!

In this episode, we once again return to the Christ myth, in our search for the devil in Science Fiction with The Matrix. The Christ Myth is usually the story of a chosen one, a demi god, not exactly god but more than human with supernatural powers coming to rescue us all from evil. I would argue, Matrix is the most blatant and obvious of our Christ myth stories. This week's guest is the one and only Peter Serafinowicz. Bringing with him no scars and seemingly no idea what the format of the show was, we had no choice but to simply absorb his stream of consciousness. Peter is known for his appearances in Shaun of The Dead, Guardians of The Galaxy and Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace. He's also the creator of Look Around You, the man behind Brian Butterfield, and the star of The Tick. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the mind of Peter Serafinowicz. Based on the hugely successful Scarred for Life books, this is a weekly exploration of the things that scared people growing up and what those things say about us today. When the Star Wars prequels came out, they were polarizing for fans of George Lucas' beloved space opera. The three films - The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith – followed Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader. It's been 20 years since the final prequel hit theaters, so it seems like a fitting time to reevaluate the movies.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
It's so Andover.Fulcrum's final frequency. Geek With Me, soon.
Real Life Devon went full medieval this week with a trip to a Renaissance Fair—this one featuring permanent structures that actually looked “authentic” instead of slapped together by ye olde hot glue. There were swinging rides, wooden horses, and some legit jousting. Unfortunately, the real fantasy was thinking the kids would have fun. Big downer energy. Steven is gearing up for an Arizona trip but had to make a sudden detour into Best Buy territory after his TV gave up the ghost. On the plus side, Andor continues to be amazing and makes up for any consumer electronics woes. (It really is still that good.) Ben has seen Labyrinth (have you?), and he's here for the dream logic and David Bowie's entire vibe. Also thrown into the cinematic blender: The Island and Cliffhanger. We're now seeking out more films where geological or man-made features are basically the co-stars. Let us know if you have one. Oh, and Ben also saw the Slate all-electric pickup truck, which looked like something out of Black Mirror. Meanwhile, TVs just… work now? What a time to be alive. Future or Now Time for some spicy Star Wars takes. We got into it over which trilogy was better: the Prequels or the Sequels. Episode IX (The Rise of Skywalker) got roasted—Devon called it "the worst." Ben leaned sequel-side, arguing they're better than the prequels overall. The breakdown went something like: Prequels: bad films, good plots Sequels: good films, bad plots There were also complaints about Starkiller Base, which feels like someone said “What if Death Star, but more?” But then there's Andor, which everyone agrees is just pure excellence. So Star Wars can still be good when they let writers write. Our rankings for maximum judgment: Devon's list: The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens, Rise of Skywalker, Attack of the Clones, The Last Jedi, Revenge of the Sith Ben's list: Rise of Skywalker, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi Your move, Internet.

In this episode we try our damnedest to avoid the golden path. But no matter how much emo teenage pouting we do it still all ends up in genocide and our kid turning into an immortal homicidal worm. That's right, it's Frank Herbert's seminal epic Dune. We will once again look for Satan in Science Fiction through the lens of the Christ Myth. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 140 - Jon Alexander - Compositing Supervisor In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with compositing supervisor and visual effects artist Jon Alexander (DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, THE PHANTOM MENACE). Jon was witness to a number of milestones in the history of visual effects, and throughout the episode, Jon shares numerous stories from his long career at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), granting us insight into a time he likens to as the Italian Renaissance. From optical printers to artificial intelligence, Jon shares his experiences working with the many pieces of technology responsible for manipulating images, and he reveals the level of focus he and his colleagues at ILM shared when it came to problem-solving (even during an earthquake!). In addition to his work in film, Jon has also worked on projects for The Sphere in Las Vegas, and he shares what he believes to be the distinctive traits of and the possible uses for the new technology. Jon also reveals what he saw as a groundbreaking advancement in visual effects while working on HOWARD THE DUCK, and we compare past and present VFX techniques. "May the Force Be With You," and also May The 4th Be With You.The Holmes Brothers head back to the world of Star Wars to review The Prequel Trilogy. We're back with another Trilogies episode. The films in the trilogy include Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). Revenge of the Sith is currently being re-released in select cinemas to coincide with its twenty year anniversary. Before the rights of LucasFilm and the world of Star Wars were sold to Disney, George Lucas came back to finish the Star Wars saga with the Prequels. Whether you like the films or not, cinema and visual effects technology caught up with Lucas's vision and he was able to tell the full story in the way that he envisioned. He could finally show Podracers, Gungans, the planet Coruscant and also show how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. There was a lot of hype and expectations around these films. Back in 1999 before the release of Episode I, people would buy tickets to other films just to see the trailer and then leave. This is way before YouTube. Today there has been a slight reappraisal of the films from some corners of cinema fans and lovers of all things Star Wars, compared to the critical bashing they all got during their original releases from fans, filmmakers and critics. The films were not as popular as the Original Trilogy. They did not receive the same love and acclaim at the time and a lot of the criticisms the films got were due to the writing, storytelling, characterisation and sometimes the VFX. Now many years later, where do you think we land on the films? Listen to the episode and find out.We hope you like this episode and stay tuned for more Trilogies episode. The next episode will be on The War Trilogy, directed by Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel, the famous location is featured briefly in one of the films.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws, The films is a available to watch in America , parts of Scandinavia (e.g. Denmark, Finland) & the United Kingdom on Amazon and also Apple TV. Star Wars: Beyond Victory #1, a Star Wars Celebration Japan exclusive, serves as a prequel for the upcoming MetaQuest Star Wars: Beyond Victory -- A Mixed-Reality Playset. The one-shot, written by Ethan Sacks, with art by Steven Cummings, Will Sliney, Shogo Aoki, Rachelle Rosenberg and VC's Joe Caramagna, sets up the story of Volo Bolus, a podracer with an eye toward the prize and who draws the attention of now-disgraced racer Sebulba (yep, the one from The Phantom Menace). What follows is a fast-paced race on Batuu, a solid backstory and a positioning for the gaming -- and storytelling -- to come in the Beyond Victory software.Whether the comic will get a wider release is unlikely, given specialty issues like these seldom do and we think it's unlikely a digital release or inclusion in a trade paperback isn't in the cards, either, meaning if you want to get a copy, the secondary market is poised to be your only choice. So far, 10 copies of have been sold on eBay, ranging from $25-$303. Another nine copies are still up for grabs, with prices ranging from $50-$219.We got our copy thanks to Kelly Knox, a writer of renown, and known for her work on the StarWars.com website. We're immensely grateful to her for acquiring a copy of the issue for us and sending it our way.Comics Discussed This Week:Star Wars: Beyond VIctory #1 Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku -- Last Stand #4 (of 4)A New Legacy #1 One-ShotJedi Knights #1The High Republic -- Fear of the Jedi #1Legacy of Vader #1News: Free Comic Book Day is May 3 and features titles from Marvel (Star Wars) and Dark Horse (Young Jedi Adventures).Upcoming Star Wars comics, graphic novels and omnibuses:April 29 _ Crash Zone TPB (Collects Crash Landing, Crash and Burn and the 2025 The High Republic Adventures Phase III Annual), Crimson Reign Omnibus (Collects 1-5, Star Wars 19-25, Bounty Hunters 18-24, Darth Vader 18-24 and Doctor Aphra 16-21)April 30 _ The High Republic Adventures Phase III #17, The High Republic Adventures Phase III -- The Battle of Eriadu One-Shot, The High Republic -- Fear of the Jedi #3 (of 5), The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation #3 (of 5), Codebreaker #1 (of 4)May 3 _ Star Wars Free Comic Book Day #1, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Free Comic Book Day #1May 6 _ Star Wars: Ahsoka — Season One TPB (Collects 1-8), Darth Maul: Black, White & Red Treasury Editions (Collects 1-4)May 7 _ Star Wars (Vol. IV) #1, The Bad Batch -- Ghost Agents #3 (of 5)May 14 _Jedi Knights #3May 20 _ The High Republic Adventures Phase III Vol. 3 TPB (Collects 11-13, Wedding Spectacular One-Shot)May 21 _ The High Republic Adventures Phase III #18, Legacy of Vader #4, The High Republic — Fear of the Jedi #4 (of 5)May 28 _ The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation #4 (of 5)June 3 _ The Battle of Jakku TPB (Collects Insurgency Rising 1-4, Republic Under Seige 1-4, Last Stand 1-4)June 4 _ Jedi Knights #4, The High Republic — Fear of the Jedi #5 (of 5)June 11 _ Star Wars #2, The Rise of Skywalker adapation #5 (of 5), The Bad Batch -- Ghost Agents #4 (of 5)June 17 _ Star Wars Legends: The Rebellion Omnibus Vol. 3 (Collects Star Wars: Shadow Stalker (1997) 1, Star Wars: Rebel Heist (2014) 1-4, Star Wars: A Valentine Story (2003) 1, Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1994) 1-2, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996) 1-6, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Mini-comic (1996) 1-2, Star Wars: Tales From Mos Eisley (1996) 1, Star Wars: The Bounty Hunters – Scoundrel's Wages (1999) 1, Classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1994) 1-2, Star Wars: Tag & Bink Are Dead (2001) 2, Star Wars: Tag & Bink II (2006) 1, Sergio Aragones Stomps Star Wars (2000) 1, Star Wars Infinities: The Empire Strikes Back (2002) 1-4, Star Wars Infinities: Return of the Jedi (2003) 1-4; ANDOR IS BACK, and with it, we return to discuss the 3-episode premiere of the long awaited second season.
This week on Critical Arcade, Dave and Nick polish up their lightsabers and take on Star Wars: The New Droid Army, a Game Boy Advance title that boldly asks the question: “What if Anakin Skywalker had a bad day, bad intel, and a worse run animation?” Set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, this pocket-sized adventure drops Anakin onto Tatooine with a mission to investigate a new kind of droid that, somehow, completely ignores lightsabers, which seems like something the Jedi Council probably should've mentioned before deployment. As Anakin, the boys battle through wave after wave of robotic enemies, shady bounty hunters, and the occasional “wait, where am I supposed to go?” moment, all while navigating levels that look like someone spilled Star Wars onto a spreadsheet. But hidden beneath the crunchy graphics and suspicious hitboxes is a story filled with betrayal, double-crosses, and enough lightsaber swinging to qualify as cardio. Can Dave's Nostalgia goggles find any redeeming qualities in a game as complex as Jar Jar Binks? Will Nick ever remember the name of Liam Neeson's character in the Phantom Menace? Hosted on Acast. Send us a textRemember when blockbuster movies didn't take themselves so seriously? When they balanced action, horror, comedy, and romance without sacrificing pure entertainment value? The 1999 adventure classic "The Mummy" represents this perfect equilibrium, and we're diving headfirst into its sandy depths to uncover what makes it so enduringly appealing.Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan create magic on screen with their natural chemistry and witty repartee. Their relationship evolution feels authentic despite the extraordinary circumstances, providing an emotional anchor amid the supernatural chaos. Whether they're bickering over packing a suitcase or facing down an ancient evil, their scenes together sparkle with an energy rarely captured in today's blockbusters. The film's special effects present a fascinating time capsule of late '90s Hollywood innovation. Released the same year as The Phantom Menace, The Mummy showcases both cutting-edge CGI and practical effects that combine to create memorable sequences - from the sand face storm to the partially regenerated Imhotep. While some effects show their age, others remain impressively effective more than two decades later. The scarab beetles crawling under human skin still make us squirm, proving that sometimes imagination trumps perfect visual execution. We explore the fascinating historical liberties taken by the filmmakers, who borrowed real Egyptian historical figures separated by millennia and placed them together in a fictional narrative. Despite these creative choices, the production team's attention to detail in hieroglyphs, language, and cultural elements demonstrates a genuine appreciation for Egyptian history and mythology. The film manages to create an immersive world that feels respectful of its source material while prioritizing entertainment over strict historical accuracy. What makes this episode particularly compelling is our discussion about why Hollywood rarely produces mid-budget adventure films of this nature anymore. The Mummy represents a lost era when studios were willing to take chances on original adventure stories without the pressure of universe-building or franchise potential. Join us as we reminisce about this perfect popcorn movie that reminds us all why we fell in love with cinema in the first place.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show

Like in the Star Wars movie “The Phantom Menace”, the taxation of trade routes is leading to turmoil, including market turmoil. Bond and oil prices suggest the economy is about to abruptly slow down, following US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff announcements. The hope is the rest of the world will quickly come and negotiate with Trump, and some are. But the largest bilateral trade relationship is between China and the United States. China has called his bluff, raising its tariff on US imports to 52%.Comparisons of indicators such as volatility ratios, deviations from averages and investor sentiment between today and previous flash crashes, all indicate high chances of the S&P 500 index being higher a year from now. But fundamentally, there's no way to know what things will look like a year from now. We expect US valuations to compress and valuations to expand, as foreign savings fund domestic growth in Europe and China.
When you feel the future, how do you share that feeling in order to build community? Over the past quarter-century, Best — first as an actor, musician, and performer, and later as an Afrofuturist scholar and lecturer — has worked to answer that question. Drawing on his experiences as a cast member on the award-winning percussion performance Stomp, as Jar-Jar Binks, the ground-breaking first major CGI character actor in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and as a lecturer at the Stanford d.school and one of the leaders of the AfroRithms Futures Group. By bringing people together through electrifying performance and thought-provoking conversation, Best's work has been able to make the future not just an abstract, intellectual consideration but something that can be felt in collective experience. The core of Ahmed's argument? Feeling is a form of communication in itself, beyond words — and only by taking action and sharing our feelings of the future with each other in our communities can we create the futures we want for ourselves. Using a diverse range of creative and imaginative tactics, Best incorporates play and motion in order to help audiences Feel The Future. In his Long Now Talk, Best is joined on stage in conversation with Long Now Board Member Lisa Kay Solomon. As a Futurist in Residence at the Stanford d.school, Solomon teaches classes like “Inventing the future” and “View from the future,” to help leaders and learners learn skills to anticipate and adapt to increasingly complex futures. Lisa recently joined the board of the Long Now Foundation, and is passionate about helping infusing futures thinking and practices into both classrooms and board rooms. This talk was presented February 14, 02025 at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Episode notes: https://longnow.org/ideas/feel-the-future/
