In this episode we look at a debated topic in the energy sector today: the role of nuclear power. Joined by Professor Magnus Korpås, Vice Director of NTNU Energy at NTNU, and Dr. Martin Hjelmeland, a postdoc with expertise in nuclear research, the discussion covers the potential and pitfalls of nuclear energy in Norway and Europe. From the promise of small modular reactors (SMRs) to the challenges of nuclear waste management and public acceptance, this episode explores how nuclear can potentially help us achieve our 2050 decarbonization goals. The conversation also highlights cutting-edge research on nuclear's role in energy systems and debates the economic viability of nuclear technologies versus renewables like wind and solar. Tune in for a nuanced discussion on one of the more polarizing topics in energy today.

Gov. Newsom attends the April snow survey in the Sierra. Also, an investigation into a rise in jail deaths across the state. Finally, a memoir studying hip hop culture “Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula, Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy.” April Snow Survey Gov. Gavin Newsom traveled to the April 1 snow survey in El Dorado County held by the Department of Water Resources near Echo Summit. For the second year in a row, California's snowpack is above the historical average - this year the snowpack is 110%, which is considered the peak snowpack for the season and critical for water managers as it marks the transition to spring snowmelt into the state's rivers and reservoirs. Jay Lund is a professor emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Vice-Director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences and joins us with more on what this means for California's evolving water needs. Investigating California Jail Deaths CalMatters Reporter Nigel Duara discusses his investigation into jail deaths in the state which found that despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's pledge to address a rise in jail deaths early in his administration, fentanyl overdoses and suicides have death rates at historic highs - even though California jails are holding thousands fewer people. Memoir ‘Dancing the Afrofuture' A UC Davis professor's new memoir, titled Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula, Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy, chronicles her journey from being a dancer-activist in the Bay Area, to an academic scholar studying hip-hop culture. Author Dr. Halifu Osumare, Professor Emerita of African American & African Studies at UC Davis joins Insight to talk about how this transition from art to academia came to be, and how dance has been a “survival mechanism” for people of African descent to preserve culture and values.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kim Yo-Jong is the daughter of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and youngest sister of the current leader Kim Jong-Un. As a direct descendant of the Mt Paektu bloodline, she was addressed by her parents as "Princess", and since her brother's acsention as leader has represented or been present with him at many high-level meetings with South Korea and the US. Aged in her mid-30s, she holds the government rank of Vice Director of the Korean Workers Party Central Committee - yet as a new book explores, her power is much greater than that. She controls the country's Propaganda and Agitation Department, and since 2021 is said to have gained authority to order executions. Behind her back, North Korean officials reportedly call her "the Devil Woman" - with speculation she may one day take over as Supreme Leader. With the release of AI (Artificial Intelligence) applications such as ChatGPT, Dall-E-2, and Runway Gen-2, artificial intelligence has ultimately become mainstream. Today, internet access is virtually all it takes to create AI-generated images, text, and video in the blink of an eye. Even though first effects are already clearly noticeable: The short and medium-term consequences of this rapid development are not yet foreseeable even for experts. In the new episode of the Wuppertal Institute's podcast Zukunftswissen.fm, Catherine Miller, Director of the European AI & Society Fund, and Dr. Holger Berg, Vice-Director of the Circular Economy Research Division and Co-Head of the Digital Transformation Research Unit at the Wuppertal Institute, talk about the social and ecological impact of AI: On the one hand, they discuss the resource requirements of AI applications – from the use of rare earths for hardware manufacturing to the energy needed for the operation of AI models to the human labor required for system development. Secondly, Berg and Miller talk about the social aspects of AI, such as the psychologically stressful labor performed by workers in the Global South who train AI models, or the use of AI in determining prison sentences and in credit allocation processes. Miller and Berg raise the question of the extent to which regulation of AI is needed – and whether politics can keep up with the rapid development of AI applications. How AI can help to combat climate change and which conflicts of interest emerge in this context, are other topics discussed in the podcast episode. It's going to be exciting! What are dreams made of? What role can they play in predicting the future, and why? To what extent have they shaped the past? What can we glean when we know the content of our dreams, and what does science have to say about why that is? And should we all be taking naps? In this Book Dreams episode on–you guessed it–a book on dreams, Brazilian neuroscientist and dream researcher Sidarta Ribeiro offers answers to these questions and more. Author of The Oracle of Night: The History and Science of Dreams, Sidarta discusses with Julie and Eve the profound impact dreams have had on the history and evolution of humanity. He says, “Dreams are an integral part of our past. And if we are to have a future, they must be rescued.” Sidarta also talks about why a connection to dreaming has been lost for many people today and what can be done to restore it. Sidarta Ribeiro is the Founder and Vice Director of the Brain Institute at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil where he currently serves as the Professor of Neuroscience. He received a PhD in animal behavior from Rockefeller University. His research topics encompass: memory, sleep and dreams, neuroplasticity, symbolic competence in non-human animals, computational psychiatry, and psychedelics. Dewey Thorbeck emphasizes the importance of these rural sites and their connections to urban areas through full-color case studies of these places with particular emphasis on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), as identified by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, to document and explore personal experiences, lessons learned, and implications for the future. Thorbeck's Bachelor of Architecture is from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. He then won a Rome Prize Fellowship and studied in Italy for two years. The recipient of a number of architectural design awards, he is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and past president of AIA Minnesota.
