The gang is back in action with a new episode! This time the gang feature one of the most culturally influential movies of all time. Ferris Beuller's Day Off! This was of course during John Hughes time in the the 80s where he was directing and turning out hit movies like no other director! Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1986 American teen comedy film written, co-produced, and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Mia Sara, and Alan Ruck, with supporting roles from Jennifer Grey, Jeffrey Jones, Cindy Pickett, Edie McClurg, Lyman Ward, and Charlie Sheen. It tells the story of a high school slacker, Ferris, who skips school with his best friend, Cameron, and his girlfriend, Sloane, for a day in Chicago, and regularly breaks the fourth wall to explain his techniques and inner thoughts. Hughes wrote the screenplay in less than a week. Filming began in September 1985 and finished in November, featuring many Chicago landmarks including the Sears Tower, Wrigley Field, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The film was Hughes's love letter to Chicago: "I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could. Not just in the architecture and landscape, but the spirit." Released by Paramount Pictures on June 11, 1986, the film became the tenth-highest-grossing film of 1986 in the United States, grossing $70 million over a $5 million budget. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, who praised Broderick's performance, and the film's humor and tone. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film was followed by a television series, starring Charlie Schlatter as the title character. A spin-off film titled Sam & Victor's Day Off, focusing on the two valets who took Cameron's father's Ferrari on a joy ride, is in development for Paramount+.

Everyone in the world is talking about this show, but obviously we need to be a little different and talk about the Survival Drama genre that's doing so well coming out of South Korea lately. Maybe the screenwriters are more confident and have more faith in humanity, proving that we don't need a hero to find the heroic approach, humanity will get there, but the journey feels more morose that we are used to seeing in North American cinema, so lets get the South Korean Treatment to some of our favorite Hollywood films, as we do! Tonight we have the third in our Blind Spot series - first there was Chris with A Clockwork Orange, then Erick with Ferris Beuller's Day Off - but given his vast-yet-comically-undiscerning knowledge of movies, picking a movie for Thron was a real challenge. It was Chris that solved it though, with a picture that seems tailor made for Thron's tastes: indie, 80's, a first-time/only-time director, with an incredible soundtrack by a band he loves, plus a young John Goodman? Yep, it's David Byrne's lone directorial effort: the eclectic 1986 indie True Stories!

In this episode, hosts Alan and Walt get a chance to talk with former meterologist, Karen Minton, of WSB-TV. Karen's career didn't start with a focus on television or meteorology. After getting her degree in the biological sciences, she was working for Dairy Queen corporate offices. She really thought she was going to be heading down that path. A chance encounter with a news director helped shape the course of her future. Starting on the West coast as a weather reporter, she eventually received a call from The Weather Channel. She isn't sure how they found out about her, but she took the job and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. After a time, she thought she would be taking a new role in Florida. However, the station had just been sold and the news director said most people were bailing. The pause eventually led to being part of the WSB-TV team on channel 2. As her career grew, she knew she needed to get her American Meteorological Society certification. As a divorced mother of two, she juggled work, raising her daughters, going to school and getting her certification. She spent the rest of her career as a news and weather anchor for WSB-TV, retiring just a couple years ago. Though she has hung up her Doppler Radar, she is eyeing a possible future as a patient advocate. However, before that, she has a few trips she'd like to go on and some fun to be had. Following the interivew, Karen hung out as Walt began his review of another horrible movie he was forced to watch. Next, Alan and Walt each shared a pair of crazy news items. And, as always, they all wrapped up with the entertainment segment, letting us know what they have been watching, reading and listening to. WATCHING Walt began re-watching Arrested Development and binged all of season one. He really enjoyed the start of the series, Life After People on Hulu. Finally, he began watching, The Queens Gambit, and loved the first episode. Alan introduced his visiting Father-in-Law to the reboot of, Star Trek, directed by JJ Abrams. He re-watched, A Fish Called Wanda, Dave, Pale Rider and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Each of those movies is highly recommended. Alan continues to watch the weekly drops of, Loki, and has not yet been disappointed. As to the YouTube channels, he watched Ashleigh Burton react to Thor, Casablanca, A League of Their Own, Snatch and Ferris Beuller's Day Off. The Channel, Popcorn in Bed, reacted to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Pulp Fiction, Independence Day, Arrival and Top Gun. Finally, he always catches The Daily Doug. Karen loved the series, Chuck. She also his hooked on British shows and suggests, Victoria, The Crown, Endeavor, Shetland, Midummer Murders, Outlander, The Durrells of Corfu, Grantchester and Zen. READING Walt and Alan and both trying to finish the Star Trek behind-the-scenes book they both have. Karen just finished, "The Art of Power," by John Meacham, a book about Thomas Jefferson. She's also big into Ken Follet and the Century Trilogy, which cosists of, "Fall of Giants," "Winter of the World," and "Edge of Eternity." The other series is the Pillars of Earth, consisting of, "The Pillars of Earth," "World Without End," "A Column of Fire," and, "The Evening and the Morning." She also suggests, "The Splended and the Vile," by Erik Larson and "Grant" by Ron Chernow. LISTENING Walt continues to pour his way through Camp Hell: Anneewakee podcast. He also likes the sports podcast, Holy Crap It's Sports with Pete Davis. Alan continues to listen to the 2002 album, "Hummingbird," as well as random songs by them via his Alexa. As for podcasts, this week he listened to the latest episodes of, Measuring the Score, 60MW Podcast (doing a throw-back watch and review of Condorman) and Radiolabyrinth. Jen Chaney joins Tim to talk about a cult classic film that its fans have to watch over and over. Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. Jen is a TV critic and pop culture journalist who’s contributed to the Washington Post, the New York Times, New York Magazine’s Vulture specialty publication, and WTOP Radio in Washington, D.C. In this episode we talk about how a teen movie left an indelible mark on pop culture. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/53_-_Ferris_Beullers_Day_Off_auphonic.mp3   Filmmaker and Director John Hughes made more than his share of movie favorites that spanned generations. All we need to hear are just some of the titles of some of his films, to find ourselves taking a trip back to a certain time in our lives: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, Mr. Mom and others. In this episode, we to talk about the lasting impact of one of Hughes’ films, one that many of its fans said they just couldn’t watch one time. Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. The movie debuted in 1986. Matthew Broderick played Ferris, a free-spirited teenager with a quick wit. In Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, he cuts school and goes out on the town in Chicago with two of his girlfriend and his best friend. As with many cult classics this movie contributed some things to culture that have lasted decades.  In fact, Jen Chaney wrote an article in the Washington Post where she documented 25 contributions to pop culture lore. The Plot Ferris is played by Matthew Broderick. He lives in the suburbs of Chicago. He decides to fake being sick so he can cut school for the day. He recruits his best friend Cameron to join him, and Cameron, who is played by Alan Ruck, actually does have a cold that day. And Ferris recruits his girlfriend Sloane, who is played by Mia Sara. There are other memorable characters like Ferris’s little sister played by Jennifer Grey, Jeffrey Jones who plays Principal Ed Rooney, and of course Ben Stein, who plays one of Ferris’s teachers. Charlie Sheen even made a memorable appearance. The movie shows us how cleverly Ferris convinces his mother he’s sick, and then it shows us how he is able to get Cameron and Sloane away from school. The movie starts to build to a point when the three decide to take a joy ride in Cameron’s father’s 1961 Ferrari 250 GT. There were only 100 of those cars ever made. They escape from school and explore Chicago, including a little culture – the museum. The kids make a series of decisions that leave you wondering what’s going to happen next, and sometimes what you fear might happen actually does. Ferris Beuller in Pop Culture It’s not just that certain lines stood out in the movie, but that they came to mean things outside of the movie: When Ben Stein drones Beuller’s name three times in class. When the 1961 Ferrari enters the picture, the soundtrack plays a song from Yello called Oh Yeah. Now shorthand for something you really want in other films, TV and advertising. The movie revived Twist and Shout by the Beatles and Wayne Newton’s 1960s hit Danke Schoen. Rock bands took their names from the movie: Save Ferris, Rooney. Two 1990 TV shows: NBC’s Ferris Beuller (Jennifer Anniston played Ferris’s sister in that;” and Fox’s Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. Things We Didn’t Know Alan Ruck, who played Cameron, was 30 years old at the time. Broderick was 23. In real life Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey (his on screen sister) got engaged before the movie’s release. The couple who played Ferris’s parents actually met on the set and got married. (Cindy Picket and Lyman Ward) Ben Stein was supposed to be off-camera, but the student extras laughed so hard during the filming that John Hughes decided to put Ben Stein in front of the camera for his speech on supply-side economics. Stein selected that topic himself when Hughes told him to talk about something he really knew about.

Consider how Spencer Salter spent the last two years, and the auto industry seems like a terrific business. The Jaguar Land Rover researcher rode on boats, trains, and planes. Episode 46Stand By Me, Contact, American BeautyHi, welcome to episode 46 of Jay Wont darts podcast. My intro was from episode 132 of No Agenda. This episode, I'll talk about three of my favourite movies. Stand by Me, a coming of age flick, Contact, starring Jodie Foster and centred around aliens, and American Beauty, which is like a grown up Ferris Buellers Day Off. First, Stand By Me.Heres the trailer,Stand By Me is a movie a lot of people will have seen before, and forgotten about. Its truly a classic. The movie, based on a Steven King book, came out in 1986. It has a lot of fairly well known scenes, the young boys walking along train tracks for most of the movie is quite memorable.I'll read from the Wikipedia summary. The film is narrated by an adult Gordie LaChance, known as "The Writer" (Richard Dreyfuss), writing the memoir about his youth. Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon, over Labor Day weekend in September 1959, Gordie (Wil Wheaton), and his friends Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) learn from their friend Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell) that the dead body of a boy named Ray Brower, who was struck by a train while picking blueberries in the woods, has not been found. While under his porch looking for his buried jar of pennies, Vern overheard his older brother talking about finding the body while in the woods with a friend. The boys then embark upon a two-day journey across the woodlands near Castle Rock to see and find the body in hopes that the discovery will make them all famous. Each boy has a physical and/or emotional burden. Gordie is a quiet, bookish boy with a penchant for telling stories and writing, rejected by his father following the death of his football-star older brother Denny (John Cusack) in a Jeep accident. Chris is from a family of criminals and alcoholics and, despite his intelligence and desire to break the generational curse, he is usually stereotyped accordingly. Teddy is an eccentric and physically deformed after his mentally-unstable father (whom Teddy sees as a war hero who "stormed the beach at Normandy") held his ear to a stove and nearly burned it off, thus forcing him to wear a hearing aid. Vern, overweight and timid, is easily scared, and thus often picked on.Through the boys' misadventures and conversations, the viewer learns about each character's personality. Each of the boys, for varying reasons, lives in the shadow of their fathers and older brothers. Gordie's talent for storytelling pegs him as the most likely of the four to have a promising future.Heres a clip of Gordie telling a story.Stand By Me is a great movie, its been mentioned in pop culture a few times, such as the scenes of the adult writer reminiscing about his childhood friends. By the end of the movie, we hear him mention how he moved away from his friends, and the terrible fates that awaited each of them. Its terribly sad, to hear how they all end up.The next movie is Contact, about finding a radio signal from outer space. Contact came out in 1997. Jodie Foster's character has been into radio all her life, and now she works with radio telescopes listening to signals from space. Eventually, she and her team manage to decode one such signal, and find out it has information inside, instructing them to build a machine. Here is the trailer for contact.I forget the total cost of the machines, but its actually quite low by todays standards, less than the US auto bail outs for example. A machine, or two, to teleport us through space, to meet aliens, and they cost less than keeping American cars around. This is unrelated to the cost of the machine, but here is a clip of Jodie Foster asking for more funding.Contact has a really interesting character, a ultra rich man near the end of his life, he shows up in a lot of interesting scenes, such as one as he floats inside a space station to prolong his life. Near the very end of the movie, as a question about him is brought up, we see his fellow space station friends put him in a body bag.An interesting thing about Contact, the signal, and aliens, are from Vega, a star. When you mention this star , people from Vega are called "vay-guns". So, in the movie there are some GREAT clips to be made, as it sounds like they are saying Vegans! Observe.Arnt they great? The last movie is American Beauty. I love this movie, it features Kevin Spacey as the main character. American Beauty came out in 1999.Reading from Wikipedia,Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a middle-aged office worker who has a midlife crisis after becoming infatuated with his teenage daughter's best friend. After watching a high school basketball game at which Jane is a cheerleader, Lester develops an infatuation with Jane's sexually precocious friend and classmate, Angela . His fantasies entail a sexually aggressive Angela among red rose petals. Lester is informed he is to be laid off, but blackmails his boss, quits his job and takes up low-pressure employment at a fast food chain. He buys his dream car, starts lifting weights and begins running to "look good naked"—to impress Angela, whom he overheard telling Jane that she would find him sexually attractive if he had muscle. He also takes up smoking cannabis, which he buys from Ricky. Lester continues to fantasize about Angela and flirts with her whenever she visits Jane. The pair's friendship wanes and Jane becomes romantically involved with Ricky; the lovers bond over Ricky's camcorder footage of what he considers the most beautiful imagery he has filmed: a plastic bag blowing in the windIts a very odd movie, but definitely one of my favourite movies of all time. Heres the trailer for American Beauty. here are some other clips, the main character Lester explaining his job That job scene actually is reminding me of Fight Club, American Beauty is like Ferris Beuller meets Fight Club, but without the violence. Its emotional, but not a chick flick.a tense dinner sceneand the most beautiful thing Ricky has ever filmed, a plastic bagI highly recommend all three of these movies, Stand By Me, Contact, and American Beauty.Thank you for listening.
