Vicky Gomersall and the assistant editor of the Mirror, Darren Lewis are joined by The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell to take an in-depth look at the Premier League title race.Liverpool got a 4-1 win over Brentford but did it come at a huge cost in terms of personnel? Arsenal put five past Burnley to keep pace with the leaders whilst Manchester City dropped points against Chelsea with Erling Haaland a very frustrated man.Plus, we hear from a bullish David Moyes after some West Ham fans called for his departure, and there's an exclusive interview with Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag.
Loosely based on the famed and ill-fated Stanford Prison Experiment, The Experiment (2010) is better as a springboard for conversations about psychology and criminal justice than as an entertaining film. Fortunately, these are areas where Elle has a great deal of expertise. Chris mostly enjoyed Forest Whitaker, because he's the shizzz. Welcome to New England Legends From the Vault – FtV Episode 17 – Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to the Old North Church in Boston to explore a story you likely haven't heard. According to a plaque on the side of the building, it was here on September 13, 1757, that John Childs flew from the steeple of the church to the satisfaction of a great number of spectators–he did it more than once. Does that mean that Boston, and not Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was the first in flight? This episode first aired February 15, 2018. On this edition of Parallax Views, Ambassador Akbar S. Ahmed, the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., joined Parallax Views for an enlightening and uplifting conversation about how the golden age of Islamic philosophy can show us a bridge that exists between East and West, Muslim and non-Muslim. Amb. Ahmed's latest book deal with this specific subject and is entitled The Flying Man, Aristotle, and the Philosophies of the Golden Age of Islam: Their Relevance Today. Amb. Ahmed has written a number of books, including The Thistle and the Drone: How America's War on Terror Became a Global War on Tribal Islam and Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization among others, have attempted to deal with questions related to Islamic in modernity, relations between the Western and Islamic worlds, and attempting to foster understand between cultures and interfaith dialogues. His latest book is no exception and discusses a number of philosophers, poets, and intellectuals including the physician Avicenna and his "Flying Man" thought experiment among others. Amb. explains how these figures from Islamic culture cross-pollinated with Western thought and how their ideas were often in line with those of the Enlightenment and the humanist tradition. He also notes how "New Atheists" like Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry have a blind-spot in regards to their dismissal of the Islamic world's contributions to culture, from philosophy to art. In addition to disccussing all of this, Amb. Ahmed and I also discuss his attempt to chronicle the life and significance of the Pakistani statesman Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who could be considered the George Washington of modern Pakistan. In this regard, Amb. Ahmed tells us a little about the origins and troubles with the cinematic biopic of the statesmen, simply known as Jinnah, which starred the late world-renowned British actor Christopher Lee (Sarumon the White in the Lords of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies; Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones; the title character in a number of the Hammer Studios Dracula films) in the lead role. Amb. Akbar talks about the negative portrayal of Jinnah in the Ben Kingsley-starring Gandhi, misconceptions he sees many as having about Jinnah, and his thoughts about Pakistan, India, and Muslim-Hindu unity. Along with all of this, Amb. Ahmed briefly comments on the situation of Afghanistan as someone who extensively studies the Pashtun people there. *CORRECTION: In this episode I neglected to mention that Ambassador Ahmed was co-scriptwriter with Jamil Dehlavi for Jinnah rather than the sole writer. Then in the second segment of our show, Chuck Collins of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. and its Inequality.Org joins us to discuss his decades-spanning work investigating the problem of global wealth inequality and how that inequality has skyrocketed during the pandemic. Chuck describes how he was "born on third base" to a wealthy family (the Oscar-Mayer meatpacking family to be exact) and how it gave him a "front row seat" to the problem of wealth inequality. We discuss what the ultra-wealthy are and aren't, wealth taxes, common arguments against taxing the ultra-wealthy, the World Economic Forum and Davos, wealth inequality as a cause of political polarization and social destabilization, the problem with charity as a fix for global wealth inequality, and much, much more! In this edition of Wilson Center NOW our guest is Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, and author of the new book, "Flying Man, Aristotle, and the Philosophers of the Golden Age of Islam." The book makes the case that the study of the golden age of Islam can serve as a bridge between the East and West today. Joining us to discuss the book and its implications for education is Atif Qarni, who serves as Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Secretary Qarni describes efforts to improve history curriculum, and discusses his experience immigrating to the U.S. from Pakistan at age 10, and running for political office as a Muslim-American.
Summary: My tenacious interlocutor returns to discuss his lively Street Epistemology Discord server engagements that occurred in the interim. I do some more "messaging" than normal in this one, likely in response to them asking me questions. Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/HQWeRF0OBG4 Note: I found in interesting how "importance" of the claim was being viewed differently by both parties here. The students seem to be using it as "needed" while I seem to be viewing it as "fantastic." If only I had asked something like, "Are you saying that, the more necessary a claim is to a person, the more likely the attestations of others from a long time ago are true?", or something to that effect. IL2 at one point asks, "What happens to me?," as if that should be a factor in assessing the truth of a claim. I was later reminded about a discussion I had about differences in adjective meanings, like we might see with a word like "important" or "extraordinary". In their view, it seems, if a claim is "important" to them personally (like "Jesus rose from the dead," it's less likely someone would lie or be mistaken about the claim, and therefore you can accept what they stated as true to a high degree of confidence. Whereas from my perspective (and perhaps others who might be more skeptically-minded) we see "importance" as a biasing factor to control for; the more important or impactful one might find a claim to them personally is a reason to apply more—not less—scrutiny to the supporting reasons. Check out Pinecreek on YouTube and his more advanced "Flying Man" ( https://youtu.be/2ZNiCpeF_Jg?t=4789 ) example, which is further along than I was here with my off-the-cuff car metaphor in 2019. I'd like to see this idea of how we might be using adjectives differently explored further in future SE discussions. In this week's episode, Xander & Stone discuss the legend of The Mothman. Also known as the Flying Man, or the Thunderbird, Mothman gained popularity in the mid-'60s after claims that it caused the poorly constructed Silver Bridge between West Virginia and Ohio to collapse and kill over 40 people. Described as over 7 feet tall with a wingspan over 10 ft, a ripped set of abs and glowing red eyes (some reports say yellow or green eyes), Mothman has been sighted from West Virginia all the way up to Wisconsin and Chicago. There are even stories of this mysterious winged creature in Ukraine. Is Mothman a benign creature sent to warn us of major catastrophic events? Maybe the Mothman is the malicious cause of the events? Are ghostly hitchhikers somehow connected to Mothman? What's the connection between Mothman and UFO?We're also super excited to hear our very special guest caller - Shannon - who recounts her family's close-call with Mothman."Later there were people who said that the hitchhikers were either sent by the Mothman, or they were the Mothman himself trying to warn people what was going to happen..." ~ Shannon. Please share our podcast.

This, plus the usual inimitable banter about all things pop - Hellboy, Ghost Rider and some TV shows getting a seeing into...nothing is sacred! SHOW NOTES: Man & Superman, 100-Page Super Spectacular Inner Demons - A Ghost Rider Podcast (Stitcher) For All Seasons, our next episode The Tick DC Valentine Special Umbrella Academy Superman Year One John Romita Jr Superman Chinatown One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Batman The Cult SYNOPSIS: (Written by Rey-Zod) Chapter 1: In Which He Leaves Smallville As a Boy Clark leaves Smallville and arrives at the big smoke, Metropolis. Having left his good parents Jonathan and Martha, Clark ventures into Metropolis to make a start for himself, and to hopefully land a job at a newspaper office. Soaking in the ambience of his run down apartment, Clark soon encounters a huge fire in an adjacent building. There’s no need however to intervene and Clark awkwardly walks away as the fire department manage the curious crowd and blazing fire. Overhearing a conversation from some journalists the next day, Clark discovers that the fire the previous night may well be a result of arson. This pushes Clark to investigate so in the dead of night, he dresses up in black and flies off to the smouldering building site to see what he can find. Unfortunately he’s not the only one there, and it’s a close encounter with the police and one Lois Lane, that exposes Clark for the first time as a Flying Man. Though not identified, this alien figure now slowly begins to be a person of interest for the media and citizens of Metropolis. Worried that his fingerprints may still be on a piece of evidence found at the arson site and in police custody, Clark makes the error of breaking in to the station to wipe his prints clean. All this does is further the speculation about the Flying Man, as he is again caught on camera. As yet unaware of his capture on security camera, Clark goes about trying to impress the editor in chief of the Metropolis Daily News with a sensational article he had written, when all of a sudden the building to the Metropolis Daily News explodes with a bang! This time, Clark has no option but to expose himself once and for all in front of the populace, and though he does good in saving many lives from the burning wreckage, the citizens of Metropolis are still wary of him - an alien figure with awesome power. Clark hears it all from his apartment - how some are excited for his appearance, whilst others are cautiously skeptical. In a brief lack of faith, Clark sends his costume back to Smallville, much to Jonathan and Martha’s surprise. Chapter 2: In Which He Must Choose Between His Fears Clark reflects on having left Smallville as he grinds out his new found job as a cleaner. He has, however, found good friends in fellow cleaners Sammy, Jose and Luis. The three have a spare ticket to the baseball after one of their mates, Diego cancels and Clark is there at the right time and place to accept their offer. It’s not long too before Clark learns of the true heart of humanity in the face of adversity, and he quietly admires Jose’s love of his son and what he’d do to make ends meet. Later in the day, it’s at the Daily Planet that Clark attempts to gain an interview with Perry White but it proves unsuccessful. It’s not all futile as Clark soon learns from Perry White chatting, that the the Mayor of Metropolis, Jessicks may be considering Martial Law for the city for an unknown reason. Having heard the conversation between Perry and his colleagues, Clark decides to investigate. It’s at the Mayor’s office that Clark spies that there is a terrorist amongst the city, threatening chaos to the city unless their demand of $5 Billion dollars is met. Despite reservations from his peers that the threat must be met head on,the Mayor decides to introduce a tactical response unit to defend the city against the terrorists. Wallace Colmes...leader of the National Guard announces that martial law will commence at 8pm on that night. The terrorists catch wind of this and respond in the most vicious way imaginable, through bombings and in this instance it’s LexCorps who feel the brunt of it. Clark rushes in and amidst the carnage, he helps as much as he can...again with some citizens misconstruing it for malevolent rather than benevolent motives. Clark has a crisis of faith again at how he is received by Metropolis and finds himself at his wits end. He returns to the streets to hear that the Mayor ruefully concedes defeat to the terrorists, and in the final stake through the heart, the Mayor mistakenly feels the Flying Man to be part of the terrorism. All is but lost to Clark, until he sees a figure slowly emerge form the crowd...it’s Lois Lane...and she aims to fight for Metropolis…! (Written by Connor-El) Chapter 3: In Which He Asks the Question That Will Change His Life Clark is exuberant that star reporter Lois Lane believes in him, and eavesdrops her defending him to Perry White. Perry agrees to let her write the article on the flying man saving people in exchange for her getting an exclusive interview with someone she doesn't like at all. Clark then reminisces about the time he saw a travel special on Metropolis and knew he would move there, as well as Ma and Pa making his costume with Pa telling him how excited he is at Clark's potential as a force for good. Clark then goes to work and pays Jose back for his ticket to the game, after work he see's the front page headline of the daily planet “Flying Man Saves City by Lois Lane” and is so ecstatic he buys up all copies of the paper. Heading to the park (and saving a mother and her child with his super breath on the way) he begins to brainstorm ideas for his big article to impress Perry White at the Daily planet, mostly ideas to do with a newcomer in Metropolis then he settles on How the Unknown Impacts people. He then uses his telescopic vision to look in on Lois and Perry and sees Perry telling Lois its time for the interview and orders her to go or her current story is dead. Clark, being curious about who this is, puts on his mask and follows Lois to this press conference and arrives at the airport where he overhears Jimmy and Lois talk about the fact that she once dated this man. The man as it turns out, is Lex Luthor who proclaims he has come back to Metropolis after 5 to save it from these terrorists and the huge increase in crime. During this conference a swarm of missiles from the terrorist that nearly block out the sky head toward the conference to the horror of Clark. Chapter 4: In Which He Becomes A Man As the missiles head closer to Lex Luthors press conference a voice comes from the saying they warned Luthor not to come back and now that he has Metropolis will pay the price. Lex then activates a bunch of anti-missile turrets and with Clark's help they are all destroyed. The Media later reports that Lex Luthor saved the day much to Lois' anger as no credit was given to the Flying Man. As Clark watches an interview with Lex in his apartment he comes to a realisation, why did Lex have anti missile turrets in the airport? Clark investigates further and finds a radio transmitter and finds out the anti-missiles were activated manually. He then heads over to the Lexcorp media building and listens in hearing Lex planned the trip to Metropolis a month ago, which was before these troubles started. He then heads to the daily planet and leaves a note on Lois' desk thanking her for believing in him. At the entrance of the planet he greets her as Clark Kent and informs her of his discoveries over a cup of coffee, namely that he believes due to the fact that ther turrets were manually activated and Luthor planned this trip a month before the bombings that Luthor has set the whole thing up, killing innocent people so that he can gain more power and influence in Metropolis, and back the candidate John Wicks. Lois is fascinated by Clark with his big athletics build but his humble nature which isnt an act, and seems to relish in the idea she might have a rival so she promises to submit the story he writes to Perry White if she likes it. They then split up, Lois going to Lex's recently fired pilot and Clark to check City Filings. Lois meets with the Pilot and then confronts Luthor, telling him her theory that he wants his candidate John Wicks in Government so that the Government will by his weapons defence systems and has set this whole thing up, also mentioning she used to write his speeches and knows a pre-written speech when she hears one, which his supposed spontaneous reaction to the terrorist attack was. Lex's seething reaction essentially proves Lois is right, and even if she can't prove anything he will wish he never left Europe. Clark meanwhile tracks the radio transmitter signal with his super-hearing and finds a warehouse full of the terrorist rockets, which are obviously Luthors. Luthor blows up all the rockets hoping to get rid of not only the evidence but the flying man. Clark, resolved to stop Luthor first flies to Smallville and gets his costume from the Kents. He then confronts Lex, whom after initially denying everything panics and fires a gun at Clark. Clark says he will be watching him 24/7, just waiting for him to slip up or make any small mistake so he can take him down. He leaves and a seething Luthor states “The world has just changed, and I'm going to change it back”. Back at the planet, Clark gives Lois his story, an interview with the flying man. Lois taken aback because Clark got the flying mans exact mission statement without any questions about who he was or where he came from. She then gives the story to Perry and tells him to hire Clark. Lois decides the flying man needs a name... The next day. The citizens of metropolis carry a new paper with a front page read “What Superman Wants from us” as Superman himself flies overhead. Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to the Old North Church in Boston to explore a story you likely haven't heard. According to a plaque on the side of the building, it was here on September 13, 1757, that John Childs flew from the steeple of the church to the satisfaction of a great number of spectators--he did it more than once. Does that mean that Boston, and not Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was the first in flight?

[caption id="attachment_2171" align="aligncenter" width="769"] Dan Dimov, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week I have a very special guest, he is Dan Dimov, and Dan is a wedding photographer and he flies around Puerto Vallarta using a Paramotor, but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 28th of December 2017. Today, December 28 is actually Mexico’s equivalent of April Fools Day. It’s called Dia Los Santos Inocentes, and on this day, do not, I repeat, do not lend anything to anyone in Mexico. It’s said that on this day, the 28th of December, one can borrow something, and not have to return it. In fact, in the 19th century, elaborate schemes were concocted to get those who were not aware of the date to lend them things on this day. So, remember, this day folks. If successful, the victorious prankster would send a note to the lender and a gift of sweets or small toys in memory of the children killed by Herod with the note saying, "Innocent little dove who allowed yourself to be deceived, knowing that on this day, nothing should be lent.” The tradition developed into a day of pranks in general. By the way, it even includes newspapers printing false wild stories on that day. Hey, wait, don’t they do that everyday? Yet I digress. This special practice is also celebrated online as well in recent years. Ha, No Duh! In Puerto Vallarta, there are going to be two evenings of fireworks. The Mexican people really love fireworks and in Puerto Vallarta with the 2nd Festival de Pirotecnia Luminia, a world-class fireworks show on the 30th and 31st. There will be concerts on the Malecon beginning at 7, and both the 30th and the 31st a huge firework exhibition that will blow you away. 20 minutes each night, plus, all of the hotels, the restaurants, the local neighborhood celebrations, wow, it is incredible. Given the fact that Puerto Vallarta is going to be at peak capacity for new years eve, it’s going to be quite a couple of days. If yo aren’t in Vallarta now, and you don’t have reservations…good luck. I have links to the events on the Malecon in the show notes for this episode of the show. http://www.banderasnews.com/1712/nb-vallarta-fireworks-fest-dec-30-31.htm [caption id="attachment_2083" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Meet and Greet Jan 9[/caption] A couple of reminders, I will have my microphones at JR’s Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Cookhouse and Saloon, on Tuesday January 9th at 5:30 in the afternoon. Stop by and tell us what the heck you are doing in paradise. And like I said last week, if you are a local Puerto Vallarta business, please stop in and give a pitch to our audience and as I’ve said before, we always have a great time at JR’s Meet and greet, so if you are going to be in town, stop in and let’s talk. If you are too shy, that’s okay. Just stop in and say hi. [caption id="attachment_2117" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Table in Front of Cuates y Cuetes[/caption] Also, I told you about my plan to set up my microphones on a table on the beach in front of Cuates y Cuetes, and inviting passersby to stop by, and talk about what they are doing in paradise. The date and time for that is Thursday January 4th at 2 PM. So, if you are in town and want to say hello, I’ll buy you a beer, I’ll even order you some chips and guacamole if you will sit down with me and tell me what you are doing in paradise. Do you have a Puerto Vallarta Story you want to share with my listeners, I would like to hear it and so would all of my listeners too, so stop by and let’s talk. Hey, I’m offering Beer and Guack guys. It doesn’t get any better than that. Just sayin’. [caption id="attachment_2122" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Cuates y Cuetes Cam[/caption] So remember Thursday, January 4th at 2:00 PM till 4:00 in the afternoon. Come on down and let’s talk over some guac. Next week, I will have a show, from Puerto Vallarta. I’m not really sure what it’s going to be, but stay tuned, I promise it will be a special podcast. I’ll do my best to get it out in time, but hey, cut me some slack, I’ll be working in Paradise. Okay let’s get to our interview. [embed]https://youtu.be/moLff_OiPoI[/embed] A couple of months ago, I told you about seeing a YouTube video of this guy, gliding around Puerto Vallarta on a motorized contraption, a parachute with a big fan on the back. And this guy was celebrating the solar eclipse and the beauty of Puerto Vallarta at the same time. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. His video intrigued me, so I contacted him, and asked if he would come on the show, and he agreed. His name is Dan Dimov, Dan the Flying Man. Now for this particular episode, you are going to have to go to my website sometime after this interview to see what he does. I have links to his videos and some great pictures of our favorite place on Earth, Puerto Vallarta and the Bahia de Banderas. Just keep that in mind as we listen to Dan. I tried to get together with him in October, but he was in Texas, and we just missed each other by a day. I finally tracked Dan down in Germany for this interview, so let’s go to across the pond and the English Channel to boot right now, and talk with Dan Dimov The Birdman of Puerto Vallarta…. [embed]https://youtu.be/HsQqQnEo1d4[/embed] Thank you, Dan. I have the links to his websites in the show notes of the episode and the videos we talked about. How about that groom swooping in for the big I DO? Wow! When Dan gets back into Vallarta he will let me know, and I will let you know. Maybe you will join him on a trip around the bay. Until then check out his videos and subscribe to his YouTube channel for updates when he gets back in town. https://youtu.be/CJfBA1yzh10 Well, that should do it for this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show, Next week stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more. Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message. And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. https://youtu.be/p-KEUtAGW8g And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven't been to my website, you really need to have a look there. I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven't already all-right?
