In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Nicky Chrascina Nicky is the co-founder of Flanci as well as a passionate runner who has completed over 130 marathons and ultra marathons. Flanci make brightly coloured running clothing and started when Nicky struggled to find anything but largely black running clothing. Nicky's interest in running started when she was watching the Comrades Marathon with her Dad and her bet her £1 she couldn't run a marathon. The challenge was accepted and Nicky's first marathon was London which she loves and has run nine times. Nicky'e epic running exploits include some of the most challenging multi-day events across the globe including Marathon des Sables, the Atacama Crossing in the Chile desert and the Mustang Trail in Nepal. The Mustang Trail is one of Nicky's favourites - it involves 170km and 8 stages. For 2024 Nicky is doing the Ultra Race Romania which is 250km of self supported running over 6 stages. It takes place between Aug 5th and 13th with the last two days spent celebrating finishing the run with a tour of local castles including Dracula's! Nicky is listed as Bib number 001. For 2025 Nicky's adventure will be the Everest Marathon which starts at base camp and is largely downhill! It also is usually held on May 29th to celebrate the first ascent of Everest on May 29th 1953. Nicky also mentioned Grand 2 Grand Ultra, White Star Running, Pegasus Running and Active Root Nicky's top tips: Have a go and when you do go and enjoy it! Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Episode 2 features QT2 Systems (The Run Formula) athlete Emily Wivell. Emily just completed one of the most difficult stage races in the world - The Grand to Grand Ultra. Over seven days and six stages, Emily trekked 171 miles through hard packed sand, soft sand, sand dunes, forest trails, red rock climbs, rocky roads and slot canyons. To make things even more challenging, she had to carry everything she needed for the seven days on her back. Truly awe inspiring.
In this week's episode of Run with Fitpage, we had the honor of speaking with the oldest finisher of Badwater 135, a runner who is 77 years young and an absolute inspiration - Bob Becker. Bob is an ultrarunner, who started endurance sports at nearly 40, and didn't stop even reaching 77! Since 2003, Bob Becker has run the Boston Marathon, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, raced in the 150-mile Marathon des Sables stage race in the Sahara Desert in Morocco and the 167-mile Grand 2 Grand Ultra stage race in the southwestern U.S. In August 2016, Bob completed the 120-mile TransRockies stage race in Colorado. In addition to two top 50 finishes at “Badwater” and the 2015 “Double”, Bob has completed multiple hundred and fifty-mile races on trails and roads, in the mountains and along the coast, provided crew and pacing support for friends who have run across the entire United States and completed many other adventures while surviving radical prostate cancer surgery in 2006 and recovering from a fractured femur during a race in ‘05. Bob ran his first marathon in 2002 at the age of 57.In this episode, Vikas discusses with Bob all about this year's Badwater 135, his struggle while completing the races in extreme heat, and a lot more. Vikas hosts this weekly podcast and enjoys nerding over-exercise physiology, nutrition, and endurance sport in general. He aims to get people to get out and 'move'. This sport helped push my boundaries and has helped me to become an accomplished ultra distance trail runner, winning a number of the big 7-day stage races. I now live in Cape Town where I run Thrive Guru and Thrive Run Club. My intention with both is to get people moving and to help people build and live their best, most vital, most fulfilling and happiest lives.” Erica is the Author of “Run for the Love of Life” which was published on the 4th of November 2021. Sharon is a member of North York Moors AC and became a serious runner in 1994 when she completed her first 100km and 24 hour race, winning gold in the National Championships at both events, she is still the only person to take both titles in the same year. Sharon has represented Great Britain for 18 years, on 27 occasions, winning several medals as well as further National Championship titles. Towards the end of her international career Sharon progressed to longer and more extreme races. In 2011 she was ranked World Number 1 for 6 days on the road with her British Record of 750km, a race she won outright as the first person. In the same year Sharon broke the Guinness World Record for the furthest distance run on a treadmill in 7 days. Her distance of 833km added over 100 miles (160km) to the existing female record and nearly 50 miles (80km) to the men’s record. It is rare that a female world record is better than the male world record in athletics! In October 2016, Sharon had run 186 ultras, 114 marathons and 119 off-road races of near marathon distance, some 419 events of 24 miles or further. Sharon has raced across deserts such as the Libyan Challenge, Ocean Floor Race and Badwater Ultra-marathon. She has done multi stage races such as Marathon des Sables, Grand to Grand Ultra, Fire and Ice 250km, Trans-Alpine from Germany to Austria, Switzerland and Italy, Verdon Canyon, Al-Andalus Ultra Trail and Trans-Slovenia (winter edition). During this podcast, Sharon shares more about her early life, how she got into running, and how running has changed her life. She shares more about the planning and preparation that goes into a World Record challenge like JOGLE. Sharon is super down to earth and full of top tips and advice to motivate and inspire you!
