Sometimes life seems to move in a circle taking its passengers from where they started, to other destinations and then back again. Some of the literary figures who were regulars at the historic Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans' French Quarter – like Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams – might have experienced that in their journeys for discovery, or maybe they were just enjoying a great cocktail at an unforgettable bar. Customers at the Hotel Monteleone's Carousel Bar have now been able to explore the circle of life for 75 years. The namesake libation lounge has reached a significant anniversary while still powered by a one-fourth-horsepower motor that enables a full turn every 15 minutes. Beverage Manager and historian for the hotel, Marvin Allen joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with Producer Kelly Massicot, to talk about the bar and its signature cocktails including the Vieux Carre, which was created to reflect the culture of New Orleans. How so? Join the ride to find out.

Send us a Text Message.“Son, never trust us lawyers because we're going to fuck you every time.” In 1991, how did Freddi Szilagi find himself face to face, hand-delivering a $10,000 check to Edwin Edwards at the Hotel Monteleone? In short, because of Russ Solomon and Tower Records. For a more detailed explanation, you can hear our guest this week break it all down for you. Before he was enmeshed in the world of state politics, Freddi Szilagi grew up poor on the Upper East Side of New York City. His mother was an aspiring Opera singer who moved from one bedroom apartment to another with four kids, two dogs, and a grand piano. Having a father who was a piano prodigy, who blew off his scholarship to Julliard, you could safely say that Freddi grew up with music in the house. When a friend set up an interview for Freddi to work at the new Tower Records at 4th and Broadway, it set in motion a 17-year career taking him from NYC to working an A-Team project at the new store that had opened in New Orleans. Meeting the woman who would become his wife while opening the store, Freddi moved down to New Orleans working under Dan Shepard. Eventually, Dan left New Orleans, Freddi became the General Manager and he immediately set about highlighting the tremendous music that was coming out of the city of New Orleans. A large part of that was becoming a part of the fabric of the New Orleans Jazzfest. Freddi finished his Tower career at the Washington DC store, leaving after receiving an offer from a member of his kid's school PTA, who worked for Time-Life music. Make sure to check out this week's episode with Freddi recalling buying kid's music from the Mafia, profanity-filled conversations with Dr. John, and a whole lot more.

Do any of them have ongoing residencies anywhere in town? 13:41 - What do you think about the current state of affairs in New Orleans? NOLA was hit with the pandemic then, just as things were getting a little better, Hurricane Ida hit. Are things rebounding from a residents perspective? Is the current political leadership up to the challenge? 17:46 - Saba is one of my favorite places to go every time I am in New Orleans (with one of the best Sazeracs in town). That said, are there any other treasures you recommend at places one wouldn't expect? 19:40 - We love French Quarter Fest; began attending in 2017, and find it more enjoyable than Jazz Fest. We would love to try some of the other festivals; do you have particular favorites that you can suggest? 23:53 - I'd like to hear an update on your travel guide. Do you expect sales will really grow as FQ Fest and Jazz Fest are coming up? Anything specific fans and the community can do to help promote? 26:00 - Is Jazz Fest still worth attending now that the vendor for Crawfish Bread has bowed out? (Just kidding, but I'm crushed and I wonder what you will fill your foil lined pockets with now :-) 28:58 - When is it okay to join a Second Line. There seems to be different etiquette for funerals than for, e.g., weddings in the Quarter…   Facebook Questions 33:50 - If you don't have a brass pass from WWOZ, can you still buy their WWOZ gear at Jazz Fest? 34:53 - You can eat free at any 5 restaurants in Nola for the rest of your life but that's the only 5 restaurants you can ever eat at again. What's your 5? 37:10 - What's your favorite local beer/brewery ? 38:12 - Can you share the best top places that are wheelchair or mobility scooter friendly! Also what is the best transportation for the same, are the streetcars wheelchair accessible? 40:43 - What is your favorite quote about New Orleans? 42:27 - Being a graphic designer, I've always wondered why does Rex use the phrase, “The School of Design?” 44:11 - If you could host a roundtable discussion with any five New Orleans celebrities, who would you host and what would you discuss? Think music, art, food and bar scene, sports, politics… 49:01 - Can you suggest the best hotel or area to look for my wife and I as we come for our sixth visit together in a few months? We have loved our stays at Place d'Armes, Bourbon Orleans and Hotel Monteleone, but are ready to stay somewhere outside the FQ. We like a lively bar/touristy/people-watching/easy-to-leave-the-hotel-and-walk-to-something-fun vibe…what are you thoughts? 50:39 - Have you ever taken a cooking or mixology class in New Orleans? Any good recommendations? 51:32 - It's widely know that Derek Carr went to Chipotle for his first meal as a New Orleans Saint. Bad move, but maybe he just didn't know any better…If you are tasked with spending one day with Derek Carr, taking him to one breakfast, one lunch, one dinner and one late night activity to acclimate him to his new home, where are you taking him? 55:38 - I'm a big stand up comedy fan. I hear a lot comedians who are from New Orleans like Theo Von and others say it's not the best comedy scene. Where are the good places for stand up or open mic nights?

South Australian harmonica/percussionist Bobby Blues joins me this week to share his musical journey for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. Bobby whose given name is Greg Carmody, received his first harmonica when he was 8 years old, he played with it for a while and then put it away. It wasn't until he was 21 that he rediscovered that harmonica in a cupboard in his room, and this time he decided to teach himself how to play it. He joined his first band 'The Toe Jammers' in 1982, who changed their name to 'The Global Artichokes' in 1984. In 1986 he joined 'The String Breakers and continued to play with them until 1992 when he met Russell Stewart who asked him to join his band the 'Blu Stu Band', which was not only the start of a long-term association, but it was also the birth of Bobby Blues! The Blu Stu Band became The Harmonics - Funky Swinging Rhythm and Blues Band in 2008, and he has remained with this band ever since. Bobby also has a recording band and has recently released a couple of original songs "Rooster Blues" and "Teddy's Juke Joint." Career highlights include; In 2013 Bobby was invited to play with Dan Aykroyd who was in Sydney to promote his Crystal Head vodka at the Rock Lily Bar. In 2015 whilst vising the USA he played in New Orleans with Luther Kent (Blood Sweat & Tears) at Hotel Monteleone, Willie Lockett & the Blues Crewe at the Vasso Blues Club, Mark Muleman Massey at the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale Mississippi, and with various musicians at Teddy's Juke Joint in Baton Rouge. Music; "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Rooster Blues" written by Bobby Blues, Bobby Blues – Vocals and Harmonica, Tyler Venter - Slide Guitar, Milush Piochaud - Bass Guitar, Jack Strempel - Keyboard, and Angus Mason - Drums. Hello Friends! Thanks so much for spending some of your time with us today! Jennifer and I had a great time recapping our week - especially since we both actually had fun things to do the past week. Jen's Grandpa used to say, “Just because you don't know how to do something doesn't mean you can't,” and we are still learning that lesson.  First of all, let's talk about Jen's audio quality in this episode…she sounds like a Southwestern Bell telephone operator from the 1960s, as she could not find either her podcast microphone or the cord to her headphones. New Orleans for the longest time has been world renowned for the unique mystic and almost otherworldly feeling that the city brings. With that being said we couldn't help but to dive into the paranormal locations that fill this unique city. In this episode we dive deep into a hotel that was once a boarding school, an interesting legend about possible vampires in the city, a building that once held a very dark past that even made the townspeople gasp when they found out what had been going on within the walls and finally but not least one of the oldest cemeteries located in the city that houses more than 100,000 graves and is still an active burial site today. We talk about room 208 located in the Andrew Jackson Hotel, The Casket Girl Legend, and more in this episode! Apparently there are a number of ghosts who frequent the hotel, but the most infamous floor is the 14th (actually 13th) floor! There is the spirit of a young boy who is said to have died in the hotel, who is mentioned to frequent the floor and play with his other ghost friends!Braydon goes on to chat about the Franklin Expedition in the Arctic in the 1800s, and their now wrecked vessels that remain frozen in the ice. The Canadian Arctic Inuit people believe the HMS Terror to be haunted by nonhuman spirits, and the ship to have a terrible curse over it. Not only have the Inuit people experienced terrible accidents after explorers started investigating the wreckage, but a painting of the vessel is said to hold this exact curse and to be carrying the misfortune all the way to London! It s July in New Orleans, which means two things scorching temperatures and the hottest event in the spirits world Tales of the Cocktail On this week s show, we look at the annual summertime conference that brings the international cocktail scene to the Crescent City. We begin with Maggie Campbell, head distiller at Privateer Rum, a historic rum company in a seaside New England town. A kind of privateer in her own right, Maggie describes how she s working to make her industry more inclusive. Then, New York Times cocktail writer Robert Simonson discusses the role New Orleans has played in the decline and revival of craft cocktails. He also tell us about his acclaimed book, The Old Fashioned, which is devoted exclusively to the lore and legacy of an iconic drink. After meeting an outside observer of the cocktail industry, we now turn to an industry insider a brand ambassador. Charlotte Voisey of William Grant and Sons fills us in on the globe trotting life of a brand ambassador. Finally, we belly up to the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone, the epicenter of Tales activities every year. Marvin Allen has tended bar at the Carousel Bar for over 15 years. In that time he s watched the American cocktail enter the mainstream. Marvin has advice about mixing drinks and shares some stories about the lively characters of the French Quarter. Cocktail of the Week The Vieux Carré is a wonderful cocktail that was invented at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans around 1938. 1 oz Cognac 1 oz Rye Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth ¼ teaspoon (Bar Spoon) 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters 2 dashes Angostura bitters Its not traditional, but I add a bar spoon of Grand Marnier. It adds just a little extra complexity to the drink. Stir that up and serve it over ice in an Old Fashioned glass. Lemon twist. Even though this drink was originated in a hot place (New Orleans) its actually a great autumn cocktail. Ok let’s talk to Josh Davis and friends on the floor of the Brooklyn Expo Center. Always a pleasure hanging out with Josh. Josh is talking about starting his own podcast…how’s that coming Buddy?! Toast of the Week: "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life."

The Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans has been an integral part of Tales of the Cocktail for the past seven years. At first a single day event hosted in the Carousel Bar featuring cocktail book authors, Tales of the Cocktail has grown into a multi-day, must attend event for spirit brands, industry professionals and cocktail enthusiasts that packs the hotel and four others. Of course, this is only a small part in the history of the hotel that continues to be operated by the fourth generation of the Monteleone family.
