Today I'm super excited to present to you another episode from the Archives From this trove of 1/2 inch reel to reel tapes that we recently found mouldering in a storage facility near the Monterey Airport - a 1966 dialogue between Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy and philosopher Alan Watts and today is PART TWO— notable for being one of the only instances I've encountered of Michael Murphy conducting an interview himself. But hey, when it's Alan Watts, all bets are off. So, first, who is Alan Watts? He's born in England, but moved to the United States in 1938 to pursue Zen training in New York. Then he attended a Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, got a master's degree in theology. became an Episcopal priest in 1945, left the ministry in 1950 and then he moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. It was during the 1950s that he met Dick Price and Michael Murphy - both of whom were kicking around the Bay Area after their stints at Stanford, trying to figure out what the heck they were doing with their lives. It's widely known that Watts represents this pivotal figure in the transmission of Eastern philosophical traditions to Western intellectual discourse. By the time this conversation rolls around in 66, he had long since established himself as a rather famous interpreter of Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and Hindu metaphysics for American audiences. He'd had a rise to prominence in the 1950s which coincided with a broader cultural receptivity to Eastern philosophical frameworks. The Beats, early hippies, young people, intellectuals - they were all fascinated by Zen and the I Ching and Buddhism. At Esalen, where Alan Watts taught from the very first days in 1962 up until his death in 1973, he really found an ideal context for exploring the synthesis between Eastern contemplative traditions and this Western psychological inquiry which was coming to the forefront. And then the temporal context for this interview bears mentioning, too. This conversation occurs at a moment of considerable social upheaval: we've got an escalation of American involvement in Vietnam, and a pushback at home, we've got the emergence of several countercultural movements, including the civil rights movement and a rather new hippie/ pyschedelic culture. There's a widespread questioning of established institutional authority. So it's within this milieu that Watts and Murphy examine fundamental questions about human consciousness and the peculiarities of American cultural expression. And of course all delivered in that million dollar voice by Alan Watts. I mean, He could read a Denny's menu and make it sound profound. To me, this is a treasure of a conversation - even though it's historically situated, it addresses still-relevant questions about consciousness, about cultural development, and about humanity's place within larger systems. It also provides a lot of insight into the intellectual atmosphere that characterized Esalen's early years, when the boundaries between disciplines were very permeable and fundamental questions about human nature were approached with both rigor and imagination. What's up, Spirit of the Deal listeners? This week, we're diving deep into a deal most of us overlook – the deal we make with grace. I recently asked the I Ching – that ancient book of wisdom – how to invite more grace into my life. The answer? It wasn't about grinding harder, but about possession in great measure and, surprisingly, decrease. It's a paradox: how to hold abundance and let go simultaneously. We'll unpack this through the lens of the I Ching's hexagrams, those symbolic lines representing solid and broken paths. My reading revealed "Possession in Great Measure," but with changing lines leading to "Decrease." This isn't just ancient philosophy – it's a direct reflection of how we operate in sales, leadership, and even our personal lives. Possession in Great Measure: We all have abundance – skills, connections, wisdom. The mistake is hoarding it. Grace shows up when we see abundance as a responsibility, not a trophy. The Changing Lines: Line 3 warns against arrogance; Line 4 reveals that aligning with purpose multiplies abundance. In sales terms: Don't just sell to sell; sell to serve. Decrease: The path to grace isn't about adding more to your plate, but cutting away the excess. This creates space for the real deal – the connection between you and grace itself. We'll explore how abundance can feel like pressure, not grace. Pruning, letting go of unnecessary deals and commitments – that's how we make room for true abundance. And remember: grace isn't earned; it's welcomed, invited. It's about reaching out and saying, "I'm open to your strength." This episode is packed with practical takeaways, ancient wisdom, and a modern spiritual edge. Stick around; it's gonna be a good one.

In this episode, I outline the joys of intentional ideation, i.e. intentionally setting aside quiet time to sit and just think. It's not rumination though. The goal is to intentionally set aisde quiet time so that you can think, your mind wander to tap the power of the subconscious. The pen makes all of the difference. This will allow you to capture those ideas as they pop up.That's what life is all about... making the abstract concrete, manifesting and bringing into form all of the powerful ideas resting within the subconscious. We all have these amazing ideas down there. The purpose of the intentional ideation is to make those ideas come to life.We'll also formally define ideation, the concept of an "idea", and how the Taoist philosophy book of wisdom, The I-Ching, describes the creative.This was a fun one to do.The audio quality on this episode kind of sucks, but I wanted to get this one out!!

Born in 1960 in Sydney, Australia, Cheyne Horan joined the pro tour in 1977 at age 16, and finished second in the world four times, in 1978, '79, '81, and '82. He surfed with an urgency and potency, weaving in and around the pocket on his needle nose, fat-tailed Lazor Zap single-fins. His boards had vibrant, elaborate airsprays. His wetsuits were bright and loud. His hair was peroxide blond. He became a macrobiotic vegetarian, a yogi, a devotee of astrology, and the I Ching. He was outwardly pro-weed and pro-psychedelics. Horan retired from the pro tour in 1993. Soon after, he began to focus on big waves, riding giant Waimea Bay, Outer Log Cabins, and Jaws. In 1999, he won the Quiksilver Masters World Championships. Today, Horan shapes boards and runs a surf school in Queensland. In this episode of Soundings, Horan sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about dealing with fame, committing to the single-fin, pro surfing's wild days, and his victory at the 1989 Billabong Pro at Sunset Beach.

He describes a particularly powerful LSD trip where he gained insight into the true nature of love. He says, “I now conceive of the fact that falling in love means like falling into a bathtub of love.”We move on to 1979, with Ram Dass addressing the Christian Community of San Francisco. He describes the different stages of falling in love and talks about the devotional nature of the path of the heart. “And that's one of your predicaments,” he says, “that when you really fall in love, it just opens and opens and opens, and you just don't know where to hold on anymore.” The next stop is 1986, with Ram Dass touching on conditional love and the deprivation model we've been working with all our lives. He digs deeper into the different stages of love and talks about the need to give up the deprivation model. He says, “You change from the deprivation model to the model where there's an abundance of [love].” We fast forward to the 1990s, with Ram Dass reading from the I Ching about the path of love and the path of the heart. He talks about how we are hungry ghosts who get addicted to the method of love, but all methods are traps. “And yet,” he says, “the bizarre thing about methods is they don't work unless you get trapped.”Finally, we end in 2017, with Ram Dass telling a delicious story about loving everything, including a rug with spots on it. I grew up moving every year until the age of 14 when my parents settled in Petersburg, VA. I graduated with a BS in Biology from the College of William and Mary, then served two years as a Peace Corp volunteer in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. I returned to live in NYC and eventually graduated from the MFA Program at Columbia University. I later began psychoanalytic training at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. After graduation, I became the Director of the institute and editor of its journal, Modern Psychoanalysis. I have been in private practice since 2001 as a licensed psychoanalyst and recently completed a plant medicine guide training program at the Center for Medicine Work in Philadelphia.My entrance into poetry begins with these lines from “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798” by William Wordsworth:And I have felt A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man: A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things. Those lines form the basis of my book The Long Journey Out. I was a sophomore in college, adrift in the back of the room in a second semester composition class when the professor read those lines. They woke me from my stupor. There, in those lines, I heard a kindred voice that spoke to an experience I had, an LSD trip, that was, to borrow a cliché, awash in the ineffable, a boundless sense of oneness where any distinction between self and other sundered. That voice joined with another, “An unexamined life is life not worth living,” from which a path emerged, unknown to me at the time--and forgive if what follows sounds pretentious--that took me to Jung, the Peace Corps and Costa Rica, Gurdjieff, poetry, eastern doctrine through The I Ching and the Bhagavad Gita, the TS Eliot of The Four Quartets, Heidegger's Being and Time, the gospels of the New Testament, and too many other books to enumerate, and an abiding curiosity about the unconscious, thus the study and practice of Freud and psychoanalysis, meditation, making do in the East Village of the early 80s, Ashtanga yoga, domestity and two wives and two children, dabbling along the way into neuroscience, windsurfing, and cosmology.
