Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) with John Flansburgh (They Might Be Giants)

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two of what I'm going to call alt-rock lifers, guys with vast catalogs and the stories to match, who've ridden the highs and lows over the years and continue to make fantastic music for dedicated fanbases: John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws. Flansburgh is half the core of They Might Be Giants, one of the two Johns—along with Linnell—who started making quirky pop records about 40 years ago. They've released nearly two dozen albums, wriggling their way into the mainstream on occasion, from “Birdhouse in Your Soul” to the Malcolm in the Middle theme to popular albums aimed at kids. It's been a remarkable ride that shows no signs of stopping; They MIght Be Giants is still on tour, still making new music, and still seeming to have as much fun as they ever did. Their latest record is called Book—it's available in many formats including, you guessed it, a giant book—and there are some sparklers on it, including one in particular that the guys talk about in today's episode. Check out “Brontosaurus.” The other half of today's conversation is Matthew Caws, singer and guitarist of the fellow New York band Nada Surf. Nada Surf had a really odd start to what's turned into a long and fruitful existence. Their first album featured the song “Popular,” which turned into something of a novelty hit / summer anthem back in 1996. It wasn't particularly representative of the band's smart, layered pop—which is no knock on “Popular” itself—which confused their record label, Elektra. But after a bit of a slow period, Nada Surf found their way into indie-rock hearts with 2002's Let Go, and they've earned a place in those hearts ever since. The tenth Nada Surf album came out earlier this year, and it's among their best. It also features a surprisingly high number of more uptempo songs, as Flansburgh mentions in this chat. Check out “Second Skin” from Nada Surf's newest album Moon Mirror.   In this chat Flansburgh and Caws take a deep dive into the genesis of “Popular,” which Caws had no idea would be a hit but is happy to still play. They also chat about Flansburgh's love of the new Nada Surf record, both of their time on the same major label in the 1990s, and whether it's appropriate for a band to take a group bow at the end of a good show. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:42 – Start of the chat 2:58 – Welcome to Fresh Air 9:45 – The unusual origins of "Popular' 17:45 – Nada Surf's ignoble split with Elektra Records 22:40 – John's theory on Matthew's doubled vocals 32:21 – The ups and downs of sharing your political point of view as a musician Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws for chatting. Pom Pom Squad - Popular (feat. Matthew Caws of Nada Surf) - a 2021 single on City Slang. Back in December, Pom Pom Squad turned a joke tweet into reality when they covered Nada Surf's “Popular” and remade the classic video shot by shot. “I'm gonna recreate the video for “Popular” by Nada Surf but I'm gonna play every character,” Mia Berrin tweeted in March 2021. Nine months later, that dream was realized. It's a fitting tribute for a band that's built their imagery around cheer parody. Their latest album Death of a Cheerleader saw Berrin explore the coming-of-age high school stories that Matthew Caws was subversing on Nada Surf's 1996 hit. There are different implications or meanings, though, hearing some of these lines from the voice of a queer woman of color rather than a straight white man. “Being attractive is the most important thing there is,” goes one the more iconic spoken-word lines from the song. “If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond, you have to be as attractive as possible.” For the video, Pom Pom Squad journeyed back to the same high school the original video was shot and enlisted real students to star alongside Berrin, who plays the teacher, football star, coach, and, of course, cheerleader. For an extra boost of authenticity, Caws joins the band on the football field to play guitar and sing backing vocals. Watch the video for “Popular” below and catch Pom Pom Squad at Neumos on Friday, March 11th. Meet Jordyn Scharle! I love this gal! Every time I get to speak with Jordyn or spend time with her I'm always inspired by everything she's involved in. She has had some interesting experiences in the hospitality industry starting at the State and Main on Jasper Ave in a high revenue high profile location, then moving on to the Hollick Kenyon Original Joe's and becoming part of the leadership team there. She's super passionate about hospitality and the industry and really loves taking care of people. She was the first runner-up in the Original Joe's Sokil Scholarship application this January. The criteria for the application was to submit a “People Make the World Beautiful” story and Jordyn did not disappoint. She shared the story of her Mom and her involvement with The CAWS, an animal welfare organization. When I learned more about what they do I was so impressed because it's not just an animal shelter. The CAWS helps pet owners have a place to surrender their pets while they deal with the challenges that they are facing in life and have the ability to get them back when they are on more stable ground. I think this is an incredibly beautiful thing. Jordyn volunteers with her Mom and The CAWS and they are currently building a facility to help more animals and owners in our communities. Love it!Jordyn is also a singer/songwriter who is working on her first album. She has at this time released two singles Worthy, and Lethal. She is extremely talented and has a beautiful voice, I strongly suggest you check out these two singles. If you're interested in learning more about The CAWS you can visit this site: https://www.cawsab.org/And to hear Jordyn's singles you can visit Jordyn Rayne Music here: https://jordynraynemusic.com/Thank you Jordyn, for being my guest and for sharing your stories with me on the podcast it was such a pleasure to get to spend this time with you!

Dr Col's driving philosophy is that: "Health, wellness, and fitness are the building blocks of a life worth living, and that everyone - regardless of their personal circumstances - has the right to receive the absolute best levels of support and guidance when it comes to making positive lifestyle changes. Sport and fitness are vital industries, and the only industries that can breed a culture of health and hope that people can rely on, and that can make all of our futures brighter."    Established in June 2020, CAWS creates online content, courses and curriculums specific to the needs of the fitness sector workforce. The company’s philosophy is to draw upon the core principles of elite sport, sport science and medicine and apply them to the education needs of commercial fitness. We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk I think it's a fairly safe bet to assume the number one topic of conversation this year has been COVID. This is probably the first year in nearly twenty where I've been asked a different more than "What's the best way to lose weight?" ------ "Although, if I'm being honest, the question I get asked more than any other by a very long shot is "Dad?" --------- I've been asked my opinion on COVID, lockdown, precautions, etc by probably a few hundred people this year. And whilst it's nice that people seem to value my opinion. My opinion doesn't really matter. It's not my area of expertise. I know, at most, more than the average person (COVID prevention course, currently studying the CAWS course to become a qualified COVID recovery coach, etc). But, in the grand scheme of things, very little. My opinion pales into insignificance compared to the knowledge and experience of experts in that field. People who've made a living and a reputation in infectious disease and their management. If they concur on something, I would need a pretty big ego to say that I know better. Whilst experts don't have all the answers and should always be held to a degree of questioning and accountability......... I'll happily, until proven otherwise, value their opinions over what someone "saw on YouTube". FitPros are not here for their opinion on COVID (and, in my opinion, ones that offer their opinion of stuff 'outside of their lane' too readily are best avoided). And, to be honest, they're not really here for their opinion of fitness stuff either. What we try to do is collate the consensus of opinion from our industry........... What the most reliable science and studies suggest......... And deliver it in an 'easy to digest' (and implement) format to our customers. And help them question the thought processes, habits, beliefs, mindsets, etc that might hold them back in implementing the changes that will lead them to the results they desire. If anything, what we think isn't important. It's how we can help you change what you think that is. Much love, 'Wycelf' Jon Hall

The 1994 comic book film "The Crow" has a famous and heartbreaking history. Its star Brandon Lee — son of Bruce Lee — was tragically killed in an on-set accident. Because of this, the film was edited down with much of its expository material removed, and the result was a tight and haunting story with an iconic lead performance. Sarah and Raf note that it's hard to watch Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight" and not think of Lee's Eric Draven. That doesn't mean "The Crow" is a perfect film. As much as Raf loved it, he admits that it's "the most 1994 movie ever made," but celebrates what a landmark it was for the comic book movie industry. The gore and violence made Sarah hesitate to embrace the film, as did the cheesiness. The villains' names "sound like something from a PBS children's television show," she says, adding that their "Fire It Up" dance "feels like they're just really excited about going to regionals."Yet "The Crow," for all its flaws, remains important to both hosts. It's an extraordinarily well-edited film, it helped popularize "Hot Topic" (For real! Kind of!), and its soundtrack was essential for goths and non-goths alike. Plus, the film's message about how "real love never dies" hits them right in their still-teenage hearts. In Sarah's words, "It's so important that it doesn't need to justify its existence. To ask if it holds up is sort of belittling how important it is."(Bonus content: Sarah's beloved dog Verona, who passed away in May 2019, spends a lot of time walking around, flapping her ears, and licking Raf's face in this episode. At the time of recording, the hosts thought she felt unsettled by the film's sad background and was driven to move around a lot. Now, her noise is a sweet reminder that — as the film's characters keep saying — real love never dies.)

We met Tracy in episode 1, but we learn a bit more about her here. We also meet Ricki and Nicolle and learn the history of their friendship with Tracy and what makes their bond so tight. This episode was a riot to record in person together at Nicolle's home. After the show we spent hours just talking more about life and the world. Ricki, Nicolle, and Tracy share a friendship that is unshakable and could serve as a perfect model for what true friends should be. They always have each other's back, they aren't afraid to set each other straight, and they know when it's time to goof and when it's time to set aside the giggles and get serious. In this episode, we traffic in Consciousness. Your cheery podcast kind-of-friends would love to explain why we are a week late, but there’s no unpacking to see here. Kindly move along to our low-energy Overview wherein Scott seeks an ancient, rare bulb unknown to humankind, enjoys some filterless cabin smoke, and battles a bad seal and a floaty rear-end. Every Murdervan is different, but it’s nothing that chemistry can’t try to fix. Fry up some toast! William is nest-adjacent to a patrolling, paroling, thwack-crazy corvid with boundary issues. Whose house IS this anyway? It may be good theater, but that equal-opportunity thwacker has us considering some wacky solutions. These head games are definitely a Caws for Alarm. Daisy Ridley seems to be feeling a bit yellow. Costa Rican skin graft? Jaundiced Jedi? Whatever the case, the turmeric is strong with this one. We’ll provide pertinent particularization on her pasty poultice post-haste! Then it’s back to square zero with Word of the Week as we explore the art of being conscient, um, conscious, wait, have a conscience (that's it!) while you are out among the other humans. Our discussion ranges from handicapped parking space conspiracy theories to unwanted bathroom gifts to stall choice selection for Advanced Sociopaths. After considering the roaming habits of wild, free-ranging shopping carts, we end up with a traffic trilogy: “No Sense about Sensors,” “How to Passively-Aggressively Direct a Four-way Stop,” and “Go-Round-The-Wrong-Way-About: A Story of Cutting Corners.” Are shopping malls screwing it up for all of us? Will self-driving cars solve our ills? Is stopping in the wrong place the new unnamable sin? Tune in to two quality bitchers and find out! Just remember to leave a buffer stall or suffer the wrath of Scott’s scalding “I see you” glare! Finally, it’s on to Music in Rearview as we are visited by the 67 members of Traffic in their empty pimp suits. Our expectations are shattered by this down-mood jam band as we listen to Stairway to Rivendell and other jazzy, Genesisy, Phishy tunes. This IS your father’s Steve Winwood! But who is that cute girl in the video? As we sign off, we urge you to consider that other humans are not obstacles. Be mindful and provide a positive or net-zero effect. You aren’t a sucker by giving. That’s not losing. In the words of Daisy Ridley, “Do. Or do not. There is no dye.”

THE FOOD SEEN: “The Modern Art Cookbook” with Mary Ann Caws January 6, 2015 11:21 AM On today's THE FOOD SEEN, Mary Ann Caws, a Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, English, and French at the Graduate School of the City University of New York, takes an in-depth look at palates of famous artists throughout history. “The Modern Art Cookbook” mixes art with recipes, from Salvador Dali's “Eggs on the Plate without the Plate” to a Picasso's Omelette a L'Espagnole. The relationship between how Impressionists, Surrealists, and Futurists see food, interpreted through cooking, is wonderfully reflective of their personal styles. Imagine being studio with Paul Cezanne, snacking on his Anchoiade (anchovy spread), or trying Frida Kahlo's Red Snapper, Veracruz Style, a bite of Monet's Madeleines au Citron, or a slice of David Hockney's Strawberry Cake. You can't touch Andy Warhol's “Campbell's Soup Cans”, but you can eat Allen Ginsberg's Borscht any day! “I think the simplicity of the recipes is exactly what I was aiming at – simple and spontaneous – the kind of thing you'd make if people happened to drop in.” [18:00] –Mary Ann Caws on THE FOOD SEEN
