The Ancient Art of Modern Warfare

The subject of Just War, or Justum Bellum, is a frequent topic in these podcasts. If, however, the only acceptable justification for any war is to establish a more just and lasting peace, shouldn't there be a similar framework for Just Peace, or Justum Pacem? Just War theory goes back to Plato and Aristotle, but Just Peace thinking is a product of the last century. Despite a lack of concrete formulation, past examples of successful post-conflict transitions included efforts to establish a just peace. Sadly, there are more examples of unjust peace, which -- as Immanuel Kant noted -- plants the seeds of future war.   Music: Liszt, Les Preludes, perfomed by the USMC Band. This final installment of the organ compositions of Axel Ruoff (born in Stuttgart in 1957) presents two starkly contrasted sides of his musical personality: three of them, for voice and organ, are concerned with the spiritual – two even addressing head-on the issue of death itself – and are thus solemn and hieratic, whereas the concluding work is a whimsical, tongue-in-cheek set of variations on ‘Happy Birthday', written as a present for Ruoff's publisher on his 80th birthday.Tracks Memento creatoris tui for baritone and organ (2001) (12:43)Messe basse for soprano and organ (2015) (21:15) I. Requiem in D minor, K. 626 - VI. Benedictus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart started composing the Requiem Mass in D minor (K. 626) in Vienna in 1791, following an anonymous commision from Count Franz von Walsegg, who requested the piece to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death. Mozart passed away on December of 1791, however, having finished and orchestrated only one movement. The Requiem is widely considered one of Mozart's greatest works, and its composition process is surrounded a shroud of mistery and myths, usually attributed to Mozart's wife Constanze, who had to keep secret the fact that Mozart hadn't completed the work in order to be able to collect the final payment from the commision. It is commonly accepted that Mozart finished the Introitus, and left detailed sketches of the Kyrie and Dies Irae all the way to the first eight bars of the Lacrimosa and parts of the Offertory. There are now several completions of the Requiem Mass, though the most common by far (considered the standard version of the piece) is the one by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. He not only completed the movements Mozart left (borrowing an unespecified amount from Joseph von Eybler's previous attemps at completing the work) but also added several movements of his own: Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. He then added a final section, Lux aeterna by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass. The myth surrounding this work was increased by the fictional rivarly between Mozart and Antonio Salieri first expressed in 'Mozart and Salieri', a play by Alexander Pushkin, which in turn inspired an opera by Rismky Korsakov of the same name, the inmensely popular 1979 play 'Amadeus', by Peter Shaffer, and it's 1984 film adaptation by Miloš Forman. The Requiem is scored for 2 basset horns in F, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets in D, 3 trombones (alto, tenor & bass), timpani (2 drums), violins, viola, and basso continuo (cello, double bass, and organ). The vocal forces include soprano, contralto, tenor, bass soloists, and an SATB mixed choir.

This episode of Rhetoricity is a collaboration with Rhetorics Change/Rhetoric's Change, the digital proceedings collection from the 2016 Rhetoric Society of America conference. You can download a free copy of this open-access collection via Intermezzo or Parlor Press. In 2014, Verso Books published Radio Benjamin, which contained English translations of radio plays that critical theorist Walter Benjamin helped write and produce in the 1920s and '30s. I was fascinated with these plays as a sort of precursor to the audio projects scholars and theorists are producing today. So at RSA 2016, rather than give a traditional academic presentation, I staged and recorded a live performance of one of the pieces in Radio Benjamin. Titled "Lichtenberg: A Cross-Section," the play is about an eighteenth-century physicist and satirist named Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. This episode is also included as part of a chapter in Rhetorics Change/Rhetoric's Change, along with an essay in which I discuss Benjamin's radio plays and the possibilities of audio scholarship. The collection also includes a set of soundscapes that I edited, so there's plenty to interest the sonically inclined scholars. So check it out! This episode contains clips from the following: George Frederic Handel's "Suite in A Minor, HWV 437, III. Sarabande" Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem in D Minor, K. 626, I. Introitus and II. Kyrie" Kamasi Washington's cover of "Clair de Lune" (from The Epic) various sounds from Freesound.org All clips are used under the fair use provisions of US copyright law.

Also on this show: new music from Dave Kerzner, Kylver, Opeth, Cirrus Bay, and Grus Paridae, plus stuff from Introitus, Renaissance Rock Orchestra, and Frank Zappa!(My apologies to Renaissance Rock Orchestra...due to a mix up with their Twitter account name, I mis-announced them on the show. But I'll have it right in the show notes and links. Wow.  Ok.  The second year of Podcrastination has been sporadic at best thank God we don’t have any regular listeners.  But to any irregular listeners we apologize. Now buried in this third episode is some of the most schizophrenic and offensive material that GDT and Richard have ever committed to ones and zeros; you wouldn’t think it; it starts off innocently enough tap dancing around Star Wars and buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken but ends up moving 1/16 of an inch around the ring of introtus. The editing of this episode took 8 hours over 10 weeks editing 2 hours down to 30 minutes.  This possibly explains the haphazard tone.
