International Recorded artist, composer, educator, and bandleader Jonathan Barber was voted the #1 Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018 in Modern Drummer. Barber has already recorded and toured worldwide with such artists as Pat Metheny, Erykah Badu, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Jimmy Greene, Jeremy Pelt, Wallace Roney, Terrace Martin, Jennifer Holiday, Harold Mabern, Steve Davis, J.D. Allen, The Brooklyn Philharmonic and many more. In addition to his first-call status as a sideman, Barber has recently stepped forth as a composer and leader with his Vision Ahead band. Even with Barber's history of high-profile gigs and recordings taken into consideration, DownBeat magazine gave his latest album “Legacy Holder” 4.5 stars. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is a powerful declaration of intent for a band that's been making waves on the modern jazz scene. Barber's blend of classic, swinging jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion is a compelling showcase of Barber's broad stylistic range as a drummer, performer, and composer. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead was featured and headlined the 2018 Rainy Days Jazz Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia, 2019 Hartford Jazz Festival, and the 2020 Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. During Spring 2020, Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead completed their first national tour performing throughout the West-Coast. Being an independent artist Jonathan Barber just released his third album with Vision Ahead entitled “Live at Jazz Standard” which is exclusively on Bandcamp. Also stepping into the role as a Drum Clinician, Barber toured as a solo clinician in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina) and China (Kumming, Loyung, Hefei, Nanjing, Beijing). Barber endorses Ludwig Drums, Istanbul Agop Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks, and Sunhouse Percussion. In this episode, Jonathan shares his background, education, and musical journey.

“Music in the soul can be heard by the universe.”— Lao Tzu Music moves the soul in so many ways. It moves the spirit and inspires living beings to become one with the music. Argentinian Julieta Eugenio was just that person from a young age. She's not entirely sure why. Her parents didn't play an instrument though they played recordings around the house. As long as she can remember, music was in her life. Her personal interest wasn't piqued until she saw a piano when she was about five years old. It was like magic, Julieta recalls. She was visually pinned to the piano. That's love at first site. Music grabbed her and it hasn't let her go since. Later, when she was in middle school, when she joined the school band, Julieta nonchalantly selected a saxophone when presented with a choice of instruments. A tenor saxophone. Julieta Eugenio hails from Argentina and now lives in New York city. She made this bold change in her life at 23 years old. Alone. No family or friends to accompany her. Julieta's formal music studies began following high school in Buenos Aires at Conservatorio Manuel de Falla (Bachelor 2012) and the Conservatorio Nacional Lopez Buchardo (IUNA) where she studied jazz. In New York, Julieta attended Queens College where she studied jazz and performed in area clubs with the masters, including pianist Johnny O'Neal, David Kikoski and Pasquale Grasso. The mental journey Julieta took was immense. She loves jazz and knew she had to take the leap, leaving the familiar settings and family, the beautiful landscape of Argentina, and the comfort of her home country to challenge herself in New York City. It seems, though, to be paying itself off as Julieta was recently recognized as one of the top ten emerging jazz talents by the Recording Academy in their online publication, “Grammys.” In 2017, Eugenio won the International Women in Jazz Competition as a member of the SIJ Trio, which she formed with pianist Sarah Slonim and bassist Inbar Paz. With her own trio, she won the DCJazzPrix 2022, a competition presented by the DC Jazz Fest.  I think we all know what it's like to be somewhere new, far from home and vastly different from home. Thrust a global pandemic into this formula. That's what Julieta had to face, alone in New York. Then, good fortune showed up. One of her beloved sisters decided to immigrate to New York for work, which saved Julieta. And those are her words describing the arrival of her sister. Jazz also saved her. Thank you for listening to this podcast. Subscribing will make sure you're one of the first ones to receive future episodes. Check out my website for other articles and photos. As usual, you will be treated to two complete tracks of music. These compositions will come from Julieta's 2022 debut recording, Jump, which can be found on Greenleaf Music. Jazz Journalists Association president, Howard Mandel, gave the album a four-star rating in DownBeat Magazine. This features her trio with Julieta on tenor sax, Matt Dwonszyk on bass and Jonathan Barber on drums.  Upcoming episodes include saxophonist Roxy Coss, pianist Miki Yamanaka, who has a new album soon to be released, and harpist Brandee Younger. From a small Argentinian port town to the vibrant club scene of New York City, saxophonist/composer Julieta Eugenio's journey has been fascinating and it has led her to finally release her debut album as a leader, Jump. The album musically explores and promotes the idea of taking leaps forward to explore new situations and accept new ideas. Recorded and completed in the midst of the pandemic, it finds her leading a chordless trio with bassist Matt Dwonszyk and drummer Jonathan Barber and in addition to her crystalline and confident phrasing, it showcases her compositional prowess. Its program is, in fact, made up almost entirely of original compositions, plus two well-chosen standards: Ted Grouya and Edmund Aderson's "Flamingo," and Carl Sigman and Sidney Keith Russell's "Crazy He Calls Me." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

Jonathan Barber was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. In 2003, Jonathan was the driver in a fatal DUI murder. He was arrested and sentenced to a 15 years to life sentence. In 2003, Jonathan had little remorse and was looking for ways to get out of the situation he put himself in. He was more angry at the system for putting him in prison, than himself for making the decisions he made. In 2010, Jonathan started getting involved in self help rehabilitative groups. He experienced a long process of realizing the experiences he took from his victims and their family. He came to the decision that he needed to make changes in his life.  While incarcerated Jonathan received his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, and his Master's Degree in Humanities. He also graduated from CROP Organization's Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program as a state certified alcohol and drug counselor (CADC-I).  Before being released he was given a three year denial at the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH), but was granted a switch from a level 2 to a level 1 custody level. He spent 8 years at the level 2 prison, so being transferred meant that he wouldn't be able to spend anymore time with the people that he had grown so close to. Jonathan made sure to spend as much time with every person he had become friends with. After 18 months, he was able to go back before the BPH and this time he was found suitable for parole.  The morning of his release he went and had one last meal at the chow hall, came back to the building, packed his belongings and headed to Receiving and Release one last time. His father was there to pick him up and they began the long journey home to L.A. He stopped at Subway for his first freedom meal. Jonathyn was happy to have some vegetables that were crunchy and bread that wasn't stale. When they got home, he ended the day in a very normal way, he and his father relaxed and watched football together until they both went to bed. When Jonathan was at his worst, he created and lived with a victim mentality. He didn't want to see what happened as being his responsibility. He now realizes that the victim mentality is always the easy way out. Today, he sees that he needs to take daily responsibility for his actions and empower himself by owning his contribution to every situation in his life. He was released from prison in September of 2019. He is using the certification he earned through CROP Organization's Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program and serves his community as a Clinical Case Manager in the AOD space. He also hopes to make a difference in the criminal justice reform movement and spends as much time as he can with his family. #CROPOrganization #CROP #ThePrisonPost #ThePrisonPostPodcast #WorkingTogethertoRestoreLives

Only 29 years old, Mr. Barber has already worked with artists such as Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Kenny Barron, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, J.D. Allen, Harold Mabern, Larry Willis, Steve Davis, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now, he’s stepping out in full force as a bandleader. DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album Barber’s “greatest accomplishment to date,” but make no mistake, this group is more than the Jonathan Barber Quintet; this is unmistakably “Vision Ahead,” a distinctive and close-knit group of musicians who have been working toward this moment for years. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control, cool far beyond their years. Barber also shows quite a gift for pacing in his new compositions, with each song boasting a real sense of progression that’s balanced with a proper spotlight on his bandmates’ noteworthy improvisations. Barber is the main composer but each member of the band contributes compositions and arrangements. With strong melodic motifs and almost every extended solo accompanied by new forms or themes, Barber’s music strikes the rare balance of maintaining a clear emotional through-line while still providing each soloist a fresh foundation on which to build. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead has performed at The Jazz Standard, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Scullers Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Rockwood Music Hall, Smoke Jazz Club, The Cell, Minton’s Playhouse, Black Eyed Sally’s, The Side Door and other notable music venues. In August of 2018 this band headlined the Rainy Days Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. The name “Vision Ahead” holds deep personal significance to Barber..."Support the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)
