The Menendez Brothers' Freedom Fight Hits Another Wall—And This One's Personal New Twist in the Menendez Case: Inside the Fight Over Resentencing   The judge called it “stupid.” And honestly, that might be the most accurate legal description anyone's used in this decades-long saga. Erik and Lyle Menendez, who've been in prison for the past 29 years for killing their parents, just had their shot at a new sentencing delayed yet again—this time because no one could agree on whether they're allowed to look at a report they already have. Let's rewind. In 1989, the Menendez brothers walked into their parents' Beverly Hills mansion and shot Jose and Kitty Menendez to death. It was brutal. No question. But what came next split the country. The prosecution said it was a cold-blooded, calculated murder for inheritance. The defense said it was self-defense after a lifetime of sexual abuse at the hands of their father. The jury went with the prosecution, and in 1996, both brothers were sentenced to life without parole. Now, decades later, the conversation shifted. The state of California, under Governor Gavin Newsom's guidance, has been looking more closely at long-term sentences, rehabilitation, and second chances. That's where the Menendez brothers come back into focus. Former LA DA George Gascón—before getting pushed out—had asked for their sentences to be reconsidered, recommending they get 50 years with the possibility of parole. But Mark Geragos, the brothers' longtime attorney, is swinging for the fences. He's now asking for a reduction to manslaughter. If the judge agrees, that would mean Erik and Lyle walk out of prison immediately. But first, everyone needs to agree on how to handle a risk assessment report ordered by the governor's office. You'd think that would be straightforward. It is not. The prosecution claims they need more time because only part of the report has been released. The defense hasn't seen the full thing either. The judge, Michael Jesic, hadn't seen it either. And he was clearly done with the nonsense. "I need clarification from the governor's office,” Jesic said in court Thursday. “This is stupid.” Still, prosecutors insisted that the parts they have seen are enough to put the whole thing on pause. They filed a motion to delay so everyone could review what they call a crucial piece of the puzzle: how dangerous the brothers might be if released. According to Deputy DA Habib Balian, if a report exists that evaluates their potential for violence, it has to be considered. On the other side, Geragos went scorched earth. He slammed DA Nathan Hochman for holding a press conference where he referenced the report. Geragos now wants Hochman off the case altogether, saying he's compromised the process. Hochman, for what it's worth, has made it clear he does not support resentencing. So yeah—tensions are high. The governor's office later clarified that the risk assessment wasn't meant to stand alone—it's part of a broader review ahead of a June parole hearing. They also said that both the defense and prosecution already had access to what's been shared. And, they noted, they're happy to send it to the judge if he wants it. In the meantime, the brothers sat quietly, watching the hearing on a video feed from their prison near San Diego. Dressed in blue, emotionless, probably wondering what fresh bureaucratic hell they were now trapped in. This whole thing has been a stop-and-start process. The original resentencing hearing was set for January, but got postponed because of wildfires in LA and a last-minute attempt by prosecutors to pull back on their own request. This latest delay pushes things again, with the next court date now scheduled for May 9. Outside the courtroom, interest in the case hasn't faded. Netflix's “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and a follow-up docuseries reignited public fascination. Journalists flooded the courthouse. Reporters elbowed for spots inside. It's the same media frenzy that's followed this case for decades. Inside, things got messy—again. Geragos and Bryan Freedman, an attorney representing Menendez relatives, blasted prosecutors for showing graphic crime scene photos in a prior hearing without warning the family. Freedman called it “harassment.” Balian apologized, but added that Erik and Lyle were the ones who caused the scene in those photos—not him. Another point of contention? The DA's office now controls the victims' services branch of the court. Geragos and Freedman say they've heard crickets from them. No contact. No coordination. Not even a heads-up. It's worth noting that nearly all surviving members of the Menendez family have publicly forgiven the brothers. They want them released. They believe in their rehabilitation. Prosecutors, however, say the brothers have never come clean. They point to lies told at trial—about the abuse, about what really happened that night—and say the Menendez brothers haven't taken full responsibility. Hochman's office has openly said they don't believe the abuse happened at all. So where does this leave everything? On pause. Again. The next hearing's set for May 9, assuming someone can get the right version of the report to the judge and everyone decides to read the same set of pages this time. #MenendezBrothers #ResentencingDrama #TrueCrimePodcast #JusticeSystemChaos Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? rWotD Episode 2600: Roger of San Severino Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Sunday, 16 June 2024 is Roger of San Severino.Roger of San Severino was the bailiff of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1277 to 1282. He was sent to Acre, then the capital of the kingdom, with a small force by the new king Charles I of Anjou, also King of Sicily, to act as regent.Charles, an Angevin and brother of King Louis IX of France, had purchased the rights to the kingdom from Mary of Antioch, one of the claimants after the death of Conradin in 1268. The succession, however, was disputed between Mary and Hugh III of Cyprus.Roger had the support of the Knights Templar and the Republic of Venice when he landed at Acre. The bailiff at the time was Balian of Ibelin, Lord of Arsuf, who initially refused to admit him into the citadel until papers signed by Charles, Mary, and Pope John XXI were produced and the Knights Hospitallers and Patriarch of Jerusalem John of Versailles had refused to intervene. The state of the kingdom became anarchy as Roger raised Charles' standards and demanded oaths of homage from the barons, who in turn refused to accept the transferral of the royal rights without a decision of the Haute Cour. The barons requested Hugh of Cyprus to release them from their oaths, but he refused. Roger then threatened all the barons with confiscation if they did not do him homage. They did. Even Bohemond VII of Tripoli recognised him as regent in Acre.Roger governed the remnant of the Latin kingdom in the East in peace. He continued the alliance with the Mamluk sultan of Egypt, Qalawun, at the request of Charles and extended it for another ten years in May 1281. He also refused to aid the Mongol ilkhan of Persia, Abaqa, against the Mamluks at the Second Battle of Homs. He even personally congratulated Qalawun on his victory. In 1281, following the Sicilian Vespers of 30 March, Roger was recalled with his troops to Italy and he left Odo Poilechien behind as his deputy. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:10 UTC on Sunday, 16 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Roger of San Severino on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kendra Standard.

rWotD Episode 2541: Service of marriage Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Thursday, 18 April 2024 is Service of marriage. The service of marriage (Old French: service de mariage) was a legal obligation in the Kingdom of Jerusalem of a female vassal towards her lord. Since her sex precluded her from rendering personal military service, marriage was regarded as a service a liegewoman could perform instead. When summoned, the vassal had to choose a husband among three candidates presented to her by her lord. The lord was obliged to suggest only men who were not inferior in rank to her or to any former husband she may have had. The intention was to attach to her fief a consort who could render personal service to her lord. A widowed heiress could not be compelled to remarry for a year and a day after her husband's death. A vassal's widow had the right to rule his lands on behalf of their minor child, but if she refused to perform the service of marriage, the lord was allowed by law to take over the management of the child's land. Otherwise, jurists Balian of Sidon, John of Beirut, and Ralph of Tiberias disagreed on which penalty a liegewoman should be subjected to if she withheld the service of marriage. In the early 13th century, lords frequently treated cases arbitrarily. Beatrice, heiress of Joscelin of Courtenay, violated her feudal contract by marrying Otto of Henneberg without King Aimery's permission, but the couple were not hindered from granting their lands to the Teutonic Knights after the king's death. A regent could punish the liegewoman for such an infringement of her lord's rights by confiscating her fief, but the measure ceased to have effect when the regency ended. King Hugh failed to enforce the service of marriage from the lady of Beirut, Isabella, who was put under the protection of the Egyptian ruler Baibars by her husband, Hamo le Strange. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:16 UTC on Thursday, 18 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Service of marriage on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Olivia Neural.

Welcome back to Chris's Corner! In this week's episode, we dive deep into the powerful themes of honour and consciousness in the epic movie, 'Kingdom of Heaven.' Join me as we dissect how the portrayal of honour in this film offers a captivating perspective. 'Kingdom of Heaven' is a rare gem in cinematic history, presenting a balanced exploration of two faiths, allowing viewers to see the world from both sides equally. This context sets the stage for our analysis of Balian, portrayed by Orlando Bloom, and his remarkable journey of self-redemption as he transforms into an honourable knight. Balian's transformation mirrors the human experience itself, illustrating how anyone can evolve from humble beginnings to greatness, whether on a spiritual, physical, or metaphorical level. This film serves as a poignant reminder that all journeys ultimately converge at the same crossroads of self-discovery, just as Balian's path does in this narrative. Join me as we unravel the intricate layers of 'Kingdom of Heaven' and explore the profound messages it carries. I'm excited to share these insights with you in this podcast, and I hope you find them as enlightening as I do. As always, I hope you enjoy this week's episode and I'll see you this time next week!

Have you seen The Fat Hog? No, you may have not seen The Fat Hog. However, there is a restaurant called The Fat Hog that is owned by friends of mine. What is The Fat Hog? Well TFH is a restaurant here in Bali. It is owned by my friend and his family. The brief history is this. It is up for sale at the moment. If you are seeking to get away from it all and be 300 meters from the beach it can be yours. Drop me a line and we can arrange a viewing. The place is very close to Pantai Cinta or as I explained in a previous blog, Lovers Beach. The story does not end there. While we take care of their social media and content, I hope that it is partially that as well as Bali reopening, that business has picked up. I would love to take all the credit but I am sure it was not all our doing. Porky's or Porkies If you are my age... Ahem, young with a good memory, you will remember the great Canadian movie with the same title but different spelling. The movie was a huge hit with a minimal budget, if you don't know it, please do look it up. Anyhow the deal is that this was our first restaurant account. We have done movies, real estate, property, and piles of YouTube content and photography but never food. We helped them set up reels, regular postings and connected their Facebook accounts to Instagram and created a webpage. This is also part of my go local and help locals initiative. If you are ever in Bali and in the mood for some amazing ribs and a pulled pork burger, do drop by. Near the beach. No, I do not get paid for an advertorial, I kinda wish I did. However, this place is quite amazing. When you are near TFH you will notice one thing. Lack of traffic. As small as Bali is, it is a maze of roads. There are very few 90-degree intersections or four-way stops anywhere on the island. It is a spaghetti bowl of roads and with the lack of advanced green lights and no turning on red lights like in Canada, it gets frustrating at times. Yet out in the country so to speak near the TFH life is calm. Getting there can be trying yet with a pile of patience and a driver if you are lucky it is worth the trip and worth staying there. I will be heading to the Balian beach area and it is one hour past TFH. I will be as isolated as I have ever been in Bali. So feel free to comment and chat with me if you have time. Part of the journey. This outing and getting away from it all is a journey in itself. It is a test for me at the same time. I am forced to use my local language as much as possible which makes for great writing material. I will see how far away I can get and how I yearn for some real company in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime, I will continue meeting locals and getting out in the middle of nowhere. In the process, I may need to come down to TFH for some ribs or a burger. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message

The possession at the temple. This gathering and these prayers consist of the priest chanting. As in nearly all religions, there is some reciting of these chants/prayers. I didn't understand a word since it was all in the ancient Balinese language. The dancing and the gathering went on and one group of people had already finished their prayers. We had to wait since we had a rain delay earlier and our turn was to be at 6:30 and turned out to be more like 7:15. As the night fell the temple took on a very different look and feel. These temples are all locked during the day. Unlike churches, one cannot freely enter. The prayer. We did our prayers, and I followed along as much as I could. I was given a small handmade offering box with flower petals. There were five chants and for each one, I had to pick a different flower and it goes as such. We are all seated cross-legged facing the statues and offerings. The priests and us are all seated and facing in one direction. No preachers are talking to you in Bali. As the locals picked up the different color flowers I followed along and placed my palms together with the tips of my fingers holding the petals. They do this chant 5 times. At the end of each chat, we put a petal in either your headdress or tuck them in your ear. At the end of the chants the priest comes and uses a grass-type wand and sprays you with three flicks of the wand. With your hands cupped together, he places holy water in your hand and you drink it. This is done three times and then you are given some rice to stick on your forehead and your neck. Then came the possession. When this was all said and done, suddenly there was a commotion. At one of the temple gates and in came a small group of people. The lady next to me said that she is possessed and is in a trance. The lady that was said to be in a trance was crying, whining, and possibly screaming or chanting, I couldn't tell. She was somewhat helped and dragged before the priest and another man did a Balinese walk and dance of sorts. This was a form of exorcism. I have never witnessed such a thing in my life. I have heard about it. I have seen videos but never have I seen one in person. The lady seemed to be in pain, she cried out as if she was and I was told that a spirit is talking through her. I asked if this happened often, and they said no. Later the lady that was possessed sat near me. I was taken aback a little because she was in tears. She had to be about 55 so it was not someone wanting attention. She wept openly about her experience. I was told that they remember these experiences and it changes a person permanently. I assume it would and as she wept, all I could think of was wow and I wish I could talk to her. The last Blog from Ubud. Bali Indonesia 29 First of all, I would like to say thank you to Pak Made. Mr. Made at MM House in Ubud. I spent the month at his location, which overlooks the beautiful rice field in the blog. I have a Tik Tok video with him as well. If you are ever in Ubud and need a place to stay, give him a shout. So, this is it, the last blog from Ubud. My first long-term stay in Ubud and let's say that my review of Ubud is a positive one. I am sure it's not just me, but I found it to be refreshing. I mean that in both the weather and the area itself. I love the Bukit and Jimbaran area. I love the views overlooking the island and the fact that I know the area. Ubud was very new for me, but I felt good despite being out of my element. I am a fish out of water in more ways than one. I am far from fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, the Indonesian language. With a little help from the locals who usually understand a word or two, I have made it. What makes Ubud special? For me, it was a touch less traffic because I was not right in Ubud. I wouldn't want to be in the thick of things. It's too busy. I am not a drinker or a bargoer so being out from Central Ubud suited me just fine. Nothing is far, I was 11 minutes from the downtown area of Ubud. I did have to visit when my Mac called it quits on me. I have been meaning to get this laptop fixed but I always put it off. I was sure that Ubud would have been the last place I would have the battery replaced but I did. A small local shop did a great job, and I had the laptop back before I could finish my apple crumble and latte. I was halfway done when they messaged me that I could pick it up. So, there you have it. All you writers with Macs, I've got you. Meeting locals. I have several blogs where I met locals here. It has been a wonderful experience. Even today, I had to get the oil changed on my scooter and a couple of guys in the shop had it done in five minutes and $5 Canadian later I was gone. It's the simplicity of many things here that are simply awesome. Sure, there is traffic, but it comes in spurts. There are barely any lineups anywhere. With a million little restaurants, there is always a unique place to visit and eat at. There are no nightclubs here, those are reserved for the Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu areas. So, what's in Ubud? Lots of fun and quirky places... That is the quick answer. The longer one is... Many rice fields surround Ubud though there are bigger areas such as Tabanan and Jati Luwih which is a UNESCO site. The pace of life in Bali is slow in general. It is even slower here in Ubud. Things get done, like my laptop and oil change. The most amazing thing I found in Ubud was the amount of hidden little places. One truly needs to look for and zoom in on Google maps to find some hidden gems. These little places and restaurants that belong to villa complexes or small resorts have amazing views. Tanahdewah was one such place for example. A boutique hotel with incredible views. Or Bebek Sari which is an incredible restaurant that is so worth the trip if you are here. Where to next? Well, I have picked out a place in the Balian area of Tabanan. I am somewhat at the base of a mountain and yet 14 min walk to the beach. I am sure I will visit the beach quite often and have more adventures to tell once I am settled in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message

Being a nomad in Bali. Bali Indonesia 25 What is it like to not having a home? Let me clarify... It's been nearly four years since I left Canada. It was to be a year of living and working abroad. Life, being life that was extended a little, and then COVID happened. With COVID and the lockdowns, I remained in Jakarta. In the process, like many other companies, we restructured. Work from home became a thing and travel became nonexistent. We all know the story all too well. With that said, I do have a home in Canada. It is a condo that overlooks Lake Ontario and a bit of the downtown skyline. However, life is life, we all do what we need to. Heading to Bali My life goal and dream was to eventually retire in Bali. That was accelerated a little by taking on a position in Bali with a skincare company. Here is where the nomad life comes in. While I do own a home in Canada, and I am not stuck in Bali, it has become home. In the meantime, I have changed jobs and do freelance that allows me to travel on the Island and that is what I am doing. I planned to rent something as a yearly rental. I was close to signing a yearly deal when the idea came to me. Rather than being locked to one place, I decided to move around. Living out of a backpack. I have a large suitcase that holds all my belongings in Bali. However, I move about the island with two backpacks. The other day my laptop died, and I realized, my whole life is in that thing. This is true. I have backups online and on an external hard drive, but my life is in and on my laptop. What is it like to live out of two backpacks? Since my divorce and the closure of my family business, I have downsized and downsized. From a house to a condo in Toronto and trust me that is a big move. Then I moved to Jakarta and gave away a pile of things. I lived out of a suitcase and my backpack in Jakarta. Now I am down to two backpacks. Oh, and the space under the seat of my scooter also counts since I usually stuff a pile of things there. It is quite amazing how little we can get by with. Also, how little we actually need when we think about it. Nomad is amazing. As seen, if you follow the blog, I get to meet some amazing people and be able to write about my experiences. I have moved from central Bali to Jimbaran and then north to Ubud. The next stop is very northwest and near to the beach in the Balian area of Bali. Now for one, Bali is set up for this 100%. The surfers and the backpackers do this all the time. For as little as $12 a night one can get a bed to sleep on and spend little to no money on food if you are happy to grab bananas off the trees by the side of the road. I am not quite there yet. Nomad it is for now. I will be moving this weekend to the other side of the island, out to the country and near the beach. While it is interesting to live out of two backpacks, Bali offers laundry service on nearly every street corner. There are little shacks of local food everywhere. In preparation, I have reused coffee jars and filled them with oatmeal as well as sugar. I have a small jar of salt and pepper as well. I have my own mug and I take whatever food I may have in the fridge. The rest is in the backpacks. One sweater, it gets cold on the scooter at times, and to prevent sunburn. The rest are clothes, phones, and chargers. Consumables are easy to replace. As long as I have my laptop, my phone, and friends I visit on weekends, I am a happy nomad, homeless in Bali. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message

War and Catholicism. On today's episode we'll hear from a Catholic Bishop and a former member of the British armed forces talk about how our duties as Christians, striving to walk the path to Heaven, square with the hell of war? Our conversation is driven by a powerful scene in the movie Kingdom of Heaven. This episode features Bishop Neal Buckon of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, and Catholic and military veteran Rebecca Clemenz. A newly-minted Christian knight during the Crusades named Balian—played by Orlando Bloom—had just released a Saracen, Muslim fighter on account of his quality, when the man, Imad ad-Din al-Isfahani delivers this line. Balian had inherited his estranged father's nobility as Baron of Ibelin, and was shipwrecked while journeying to Jerusalem. A lone surviving horse from the wreck runs to an oasis on a desert plot of land owned by what we're told is al-Isfahani's master. Balian refuses to give up the horse, and al-Isfahani's master fights for it…and loses. Balian spares al-Isfahani's life, and orders him to take him to Jerusalem, and once there he releases him and gives him the horse. Al-Isfahani is stunned, saying Balian could have made him his slave, which Balian rejects—he had been near to a slave in his life and would never hold someone in bondage. And then we hear it: “Your quality will be known among your enemies, before ever you meet them.” A Catholic military perspective on quality, honor, and war—on this episode of Faith Full.  As I record this, we're still seeing the devastation of the war in Ukraine, just as we've seen devastation in Afghanistan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Yemen, the list is as long as the existence of humanity. But really where is humanity in war? What about mercy? Honor? Nobility? This topic is huge, and I want to say at the outset I can't cover it all. St. Augustine's thoughts on Just War, and the Catholic Church's teachings on self defense and preservation of life and peace, cannot be discussed comprehensively, at least by me, in a single session. I'm also not a veteran, but I've interviewed many in my years as a journalist, and have friends and family in the service. You may remember talking through some of these issues in our episode with Fr. Cirilo Nacorda who was held hostage by terrorists in the Philippines at one time, and later began carrying a gun and working to help villagers defend themselves. I've always struggled with this tension between being called to love our enemies, and having the armed forces needing to face our enemies.

Saladin's taking of Jerusalem, three months after the fighting forces of the Kingdom of Jerusalem were wiped out in the Battle of Hattin, precipitated the Third Crusade.  Eyewitness accounts are rare for the Early and High Middle Ages.  The siege of Jerusalem in 1187 is exceptional in having three.  Two of these were by men with inside knowledge of the surrender negotiations, Saldadin's personal secretary Imad al-Din al-Isfahani, and Ernoul, the squire of Balian of Ibelin, the commander of Jerusalem's defense. The surrender and the events leading up to it are also the subject of a Hollywood movie "The Kingdom of Heaven."  In this episode Ellen and I discuss how the two primary sources and the movie present the surrender--and why. Hey guys, Before we start this episode I want to let you know of a special coaching program that I'm hosting that will help you build 10k followers in the next 90 days on Instagram. In this group online coaching program, you'll learn how to grow, build, and monetize your social media brand and presence and learn personally from me the steps that it takes to build a great online personal brand presence for you and your brand. You will be part of a private special Facebook group with other members looking to grow their personal brand and presence and will also have access to me and others in a weekly zoom call for 12 weeks. If you've been wanting to grow your presence online, build social credibility, and make more of an impact on others online through your coaching and services, then going online using social media is the way to go. Nowadays people go off by their "digital impression" of you before they even meet you for their "first impression" of who you are. Without building your digital impression and presence, you will not have a way of standing out from your other competitors and those who do the same thing you do. I will personally teach you how to create an amazing digital impression by making viral content; build a following; increase engagement; and create a community around your page so more people will want to work with you and your profile. If you're interested in learning more about this private online group coaching, just send a message to me @ray.ahn or fill out this application if you think you're ready to apply. - In this episode I talk with my fellow entrepreneur and friend Kelin Balian about the mindset shifts that need to take place as you begin to journey into entrepreneurship realm and also the different ways an entrepreneur vs an employee thinks about risk and reward relationships. Kelin compares entrepreneurs to people who are like motorcross riders who consistently go on these low and high jumps (referring to low and high moments in business as an entrepreneur) and though some may feel like how are they even completing one jump, entrepreneurs go on completing multiple jumps in their journey of building a business. Most of the times, entrepreneurs are built because they cannot fit into the status quo, they want to create a life of freedom for themselves and their families, and most importantly they want to be their own boss instead of having someone tell them what to do all the time. Entrepreneurs truly are a different breed of people in that they don't wait for payday for them to get paid but go out there and solve problems that in turn leads to creating more income and revenue. If you yourself are an entrepreneur or have been looking to dive into entrepreneurship, I'd highly suggest you to read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki or to start getting into self-development tapes and workshops by people like Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, and Earl Nightingale. Also a big reason why I'm a fan of entrepreneurship is that you get to decide your fate and destiny instead of relying on someone else to give you a paycheck after you complete building their dreams. At the end of the day, it's all about becoming the best version of yourself whether it's through entrepreneurship or some other avenue of self-improvement and with Kelin we talk about the importance of establishing your own contract to yourself, basically a statement declaring who you are no matter how difficult or trying the situation or circumstance you're facing might seem. You can make an "I AM a ..(traits).. Leader" as a way to powerfully assert and declare who you are to yourself and the universe no matter what situation you may find yourself in.
