Imagine a beautiful tropical beach cafe in the Caribbean. You're wearing your flip flips, a t-shirt and shorts. You grab a spot overlooking the ocean, open your laptop, and that's your office for the day. Idyllic, right? Just 3-5 years ago, this was not even a remote possibility in tons of locations where digital nomads now live regularly. The infrastructure (mostly wifi speed) just didn't allow for it. In some places you couldn't even get a call out due to poor cell reception! Every single year there are more and more locations available to digital nomads that weren't even a remote (pun intended) possibility previously. Jeff, Marisa and Diego talk about the 5 most interesting, up-and-coming locations that aren't quite digital nomad hot spots yet, but will be in the near future. When deciding what qualifies as a potential digital nomad hotspot, they consider: Wifi speed: Probably the most important factor is whether or not you can effectively work online and hold calls. Cost of living: Most high-expense locations rarely become true digital nomad hotspots as opposed to more affordable locations. Access: The ease at which you can get to the location from the closest major airport. For a super-detailed, step-by-step gameplay on how to ensure you get that interview, Beach Commute will be hosting a mastermind class on May 18, 2023 called “The Three Step Process for Getting Your Dream Job.” Learn more at: https://www.beachcommute.com/dreamjob After you listen in, make sure that you check out our Remote Travel Jobs Daily membership! Alex Deegan's obsession with drumming began when he was living in Whyalla attending Primary School. His teacher Sister Bernadette invited a drummer to come along to class with his kit to do a talk about drums, Alex put his hand up when the drummer asked if anyone would like to have a go at playing, and despite never having the opportunity to play before he managed to do an impressive roll down the toms to which the drummer responded by saying that he should take some lessons as he had a natural talent. He began to have lessons with that drummer which mainly involved watching him play for an hour, needless to say those lessons didn't last for long with Alex being keen to have more of a hands on role. Alex began performing live at the age of 8, with his earliest memory being drumming in the school play. His brother Ray also decided to play the drums and when the family moved to Seacliff their dad converted the garage into a practice room and they got their first kit, this was a problem as unlike Alex, Ray was left-handed. Alex was addicted to playing, would rush home from school so that he could beat his brother home. His sister Christine noticed how keen he was and suggested that Alex start having lessons, their parents agreed and Alex began having lessons at John Reynolds Music City with Greg Mundy. After a year or so Christine had a chat with Greg to see how Alex was progressing, Greg advised that he had taught him as much as he could and that if Alex was to progress further that he should begin to have lessons with another teacher. At 13 years of age Alex studied with renowned Adelaide percussionist Jim Bailey and he continued with Jim up until Alex left Adelaide for the first time. Alex joined his first professional band 'Idiot Stick' when he was 15, their first gig was at the Tivoli hotel. Alex having been an avid reader of 'Modern Drummer Magazine' for many years, began playing a drum solo when the guitarist had to replace a broken string. When he finished playing he was introduced to one of the other bands on the bill 'The Touch', who were looking for a drummer, he joined and at 18 years of age they began touring. Alex's career has seen him perform all over Australia having lived and worked in the music scenes of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne where he has resided since 1995 after being invited to audition to play for 'Out Of Control'. He began working and teaching at DRUMTEK, and eventually writing articles for Australia's #1 Drum Magazine DRUMscene after coming second in the Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition. Throughout his career Alex has toured, recorded, and co-written with many bands and artists both nationally and internationally. Some of Alex's achievements include: Australian Platinum Number 1 Single "Wasabi" by Lee Harding, Award winning albums by Australian Country Artists Carter & Carter and Sue Boyd, MTV Awards performance with American Pop Artist Teddy Geiger, Touring nationally with Sony Artist Marie Wilson, on call session drummer for Birdland studios in Melbourne, Guest artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2004" internationally released DVD with 'Dom & Friends', Featured artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2003" internationally released DVD. Music "Band It About" theme song, written & recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Tonight" by SHADOWQUEEN. We've got a special one this week, the first ever PlayingFTSE awards with categories like, Best Bank, Best Place For Your Emergency Fund and Best Up & Comer! First though, we have a game. Steve W has been looking very hard at Stanley Druckenmiller's 13F and has built a game about his holdings! Its a tough one! Darting onwards we're heading into the first category - Best Savings Account. With this we're thinking specifically about the best place for your emergency fund - there was a clear winner until last month and now it's all up in the air! Next up is Best Bank. Both Steve's are Monzo shareholders so there's a clear winner here....and it isn't Monzo. Having recently incorporated PlayingFTSE into a business we're very much on top of the small business accounts available at the moment, the two Steves breakdown the offerings from the NeoBanks and pick their favourite! So we move onto the ISA's, LISA's and JISA's the Steves pick through each offering discussing merits and opportunities to expand! LISA's is an extremely light category, expect a different winner next year! We finish with the most promising up and comer, this section is dedicated to apps that don't win an award this time but are looking very promising for the future - there's a couple of favourites in the list and we're struggling to pick a winner!

Though he was born in Panama City, Panama, Arsun F!st spent his formative years (from age eight on) in various places around the U.S., where he developed a love for hip-hop. After receiving degrees in both psychology and recording engineering, the rapper set out to pursue his musical career. Teaming up with fellow artist Em-Eye-Cee to form Team I.A.M. (along with producers Fatman & Tropical and Watson's Grocery), Arsun F!st began making his name known around the American Southeast thanks in part to his introspective and intricate lyrics, so much so that he was included on Green Lantern's MySpace Invasion mixtape and won MP3 com's Best Up and Coming Artist award in 2007, shortly before his debut full-length, It's a Struggle to Get Deep, came out on indie label Domination Recordings in February 2008. Arsun proceeded to release 4 more projects on the label over the next two years culminating with the release of another full length album titled “Life is a Beautiful Monster” in November of 2010. After a longer than expected hiatus, Arsun joined forces with Stillwater and Paten Locke to form the group Steam Mechanics. With a new group album in the works, Arsun released a solo effort in November of 2020 called “Black Peace-is” and continues to expand his artistic range with his first video director credit on the Qwazaar & Batsauce song “Cloud Pour” released on FullPlate Records in September of 2021.

Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel's acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia's Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane' s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.' Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. Outro "Los Caballos" written by Alina Bzhezhinska, performed by the Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet. The four quickly developed a huge New York City following playing at premiere clubs, such as The Wetlands. As the drummer for the Spin Doctors as well as a collaborating writer, Comess went on to secure a contract with Epic Records. Comess' playing and co-writing skills helped catapult the band to worldwide recognition, bringing them a Grammy nomination, American Music nomination and thus far, record sales of over ten million albums. Additionally, Comess has also worked as a session musician, and producer with a multitude of talented artists, such as, Joan Osbourne, Bilal, Marc Cohn, Isaac Hayes, and Ivan Neville. He has performed all over the world and appeared on the covers of Rolling Stone magazine and Modern Drummer magazine where he was voted into both of the following readers poll categories: Best Up and Coming and Pop/Rock. Comess endorses Remo drumheads and Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks. Currently, aside from playing with the Spin Doctors, Comess works as an in-demand session musician and a producer for various artists. He is in the process of co-writing and recording new material for an upcoming Spin Doctors album. Aaron Comess lives in New York City, where he plays with numerous rock, jazz and experimental bands. In today’s episode we’re speaking with drummer and composer Jonathan Barber. We discussed his early musical upbringing, his time at the Jackie McLean Institute, his strategy for joining your dream band, the best mindset for success, working with Pat Metheny, and much more.Support the Podcast: https://berniesbootlegs.com/supportConnect with Jonathan:Website: http://jonathanbarbermusic.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonathanb_live/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-eE3V1WYdHvc5f2MzU6zmAFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonathanbarberartistpage/Connect with Bernie's Bootlegs:Website: http://berniesbootlegs.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berniesbootlegsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/berniesbootlegsTwitter: https://twitter.com/berniesbootlegsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/berniesbootlegs1Email: berniesbootlegs@gmail.comAppended biography, courtesy of jonathanbarbermusic.com:"Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is an ascendant New York jazz quintet led by Modern Drummer’s “#1 Best Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018,” Jonathan Barber. Only 29 years old, Mr. Barber has already worked with artists such as Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Kenny Barron, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, J.D. Allen, Harold Mabern, Larry Willis, Steve Davis, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now, he’s stepping out in full force as a bandleader. DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album Barber’s “greatest accomplishment to date,” but make no mistake, this group is more than the Jonathan Barber Quintet; this is unmistakably “Vision Ahead,” a distinctive and close-knit group of musicians who have been working toward this moment for years. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control, cool far beyond their years. Barber also shows quite a gift for pacing in his new compositions, with each song boasting a real sense of progression that’s balanced with a proper spotlight on his bandmates’ noteworthy improvisations. Barber is the main composer but each member of the band contributes compositions and arrangements. With strong melodic motifs and almost every extended solo accompanied by new forms or themes, Barber’s music strikes the rare balance of maintaining a clear emotional through-line while still providing each soloist a fresh foundation on which to build. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead has performed at The Jazz Standard, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Scullers Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Rockwood Music Hall, Smoke Jazz Club, The Cell, Minton’s Playhouse, Black Eyed Sally’s, The Side Door and other notable music venues. In August of 2018 this band headlined the Rainy Days Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. The name “Vision Ahead” holds deep personal significance to Barber..."Support the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

As monikers go, Starcrawler might be more a more literal band name than you think: this act, punctuated by art school kids and fronted by the daughter of one of LA's premier rock shutterbugs, slinks and shrieks through their initial release. It seems they were destined for stardom, well, since they were crawling. Yes, that's Beck's daughter on the album cover. Yes, that was the back of lead singer Arrow de Wilde's head featured in a Bleachers anthem video. Yes, it's de Wilde's obsession with Ozzy Osbourne that appears to fuel her messy, frenzied, even occasionally bloodstained turns onstage. But if we're being honest, it's the shredded guitar riffs of 17 year old wunderkind Henri Cash that put the star in the name, and somewhere in this alchemy is a boiling cauldron of now that seems to have stood the LA music scene up on end. Say this for Starcrawler, winner of this year's SXSW Grulke award for Best Up and Coming Act: they're not dull.
