POPULARITY
The “Novelty” song has deep roots in popular culture. Masters of the form, like Weird Al Yankovic, Warren Zevon, Tom Lehrer, Spike Jones, and Allen Sherman have illuminated our consciousness and tickled our sense of the absurd. How much WAS that doggie in the window?…., WTF is Marzy dotes and dozy dotes about?…, They're coming to take me away, Haha…(that one actually scared me). Probably each of us can recall from childhood some goofy ditty that either made you feel smarter, or got stuck inside your head like RFK's brain worm. Let's give thanks to Doctor Demento for archiving and disseminating many of these gems for future generations, and my introduction to Larry Groce's Junk Food Junkie came from one of his collections. Jerry Blavat's One More Time, Back to School may not demonstrate the same amount of cleverness, but its delivered lustily by one of the premier DJs of his time. LARRY GROCEJunk Food Junkie comes from 1975, and is perfectly in key with today's anti-woke sentiments. But, Mr. Groce delivers his mockery with such gentleness and good humor that it creates a universal warmth devoid of malice. Yes, he intimates, you can try to be upright and health conscientious, but the reptilian brain in all of us needs to be satisfied - even if it has to happen under cover of darkness. Hypocrisy is the target here, and Mr. Groce, cast as the titular shlemiel, puts himself first in line for ridicule. JERRY BLAVATJerry Blavat's “Horatio Alger” story reads like a Martin Scorsese screenplay. His colorful bio, recounting his journey from son of a Philly bookmaker, valet to Don Rickles, mob-connected DJ and club owner, to broadcasting Hall of Fame icon, could be the stuff of a Netflix series. Known as “the Big Boss with the Hot Sauce,” and “the Geater with the Heater,” Jerry swaggered through his bigger than life life like a toreador. But, lest we forget - it was always his love of those Philadelphian musical goodies - that made him a beloved home town super hero. 1965's One More Time Back to School, on the Cameo Parkway label, is an fascinating glimpse into his inexhaustible energy. It's delightfully sadistic as the singer declares the end of vacation time fun. Not only that, there is something in the edgy cacophony of its production, with the clanging cowbells, that evokes that end of summer feeling.
Today's guest is Celeste Bell, daughter of the one and only Poly Styrene, a woman who was an absolute punk icon. If you know that name, then you'll definitely know songs like Art-I-Ficial, Junk Food Junkie and Identity which Poly sang as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through her music Poly Styrene inspired the likes of Neneh Cherry, FKA Twigs and many more, but it wasn't just her music, it was her attitude. Sadly Poly passed in 2011 from breast cancer, but I reached out to her daughter Celeste after seeing the brilliant documentary she directed, entitled Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche. In this episode Celeste shares on her mother's mental health - and how being misdiagnosed made things worse - as well as the things that made Poly happy, such as makeup, dressing up, reading magazines and enjoying a spa day. Celeste also shares her own experiences of motherhood, which inevitably draw comparisons with how she was raised by a mother who was often overwhelmed by life. By the way, right near the end Celeste shares a hilarious story about women in punk, so be sure to keep listening! TW: themes of religion, cults, mental health. By the way, look out for my video on Poly, especially if this is the first time you're learning about her. I'd love to know what you thought of this one, so if you're listening on Spotify be sure to drop a comment, as I can actually respond now! Larry Groce's career is quite an interesting and intriguing story. He attended high school with future recording artists Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and BW Stevenson. He became a regular performer at an NYC Upper West Side restaurant owned by Melissa Manchester's husband, and went on to record 9 albums and 36 tunes for Disney featuring children's songs including, when in 1976 he wrote “Pooh for President” for Disney to be released at Sears Stores. In 1976, his satiric novelty song "Junk Food Junkie" became a Billboard top-ten hit, and led to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, The Disney Channel, Dr. Demento, and A Prairie Home Companion. In 1983, Groce co-founded Mountain Stage, a two-hour live music program produced by West Virginia Public Radio and distributed nationally and internationally by NPR and Voice of America's satellite radio service to over 200 stations. He is its host, producer and artistic director. His musical tastes have been instrumental in defining the sound of the show. Mountain Stage was the first nationally broadcast radio or television program to feature live performances by Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Phish, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, David Gray, and The Avett Brothers. The show has also featured musical pioneers such as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Pops Staples, and Brownie McGhee as well as modern superstars R.E.M., Martina McBride and Norah Jones. Groce retired from hosting Mountain Stage in 2021 with his successor being hit singer songwriter, and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea. Joining us on the show as co-host is John Adams from Money Concepts. We talk a bit about how Larry saved the money he earned during his career, and we even delve into how the Chuck Berry Hit “Johnny Be Good” came about. DJ Poseur mentions a preference for Har Mar Superstar over both of this episode's picks (for being very slightly more subtle & better produced/more listenable), though he's too famous to be featured. He furthermore appreciates the non-ironic indie sound of Sean Na Na, but these two music videos are, in his humble opinion, a perfect combination of the sex appeal & fantasy pop stardom this episode's picks aspire to: “Prisoner” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHEeYIV62w & “DUI” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSMCNLpgZ5o DJ Poseur is a snobbidy snob snob.

I'm not quite sure how I managed to produce this week's episode. Several days ago, I had an unfortunate encounter with several large individuals at a local drinking establishment who took great exception to my (loud) insistence that Jerry Reed was both the author and singer of :"Junk Food Junkie" and said condition was the cause of his passing. For starters, I was incorrect (the song was performed by Larry Groce) and I deeply regret my inflammatory remarks. Especially because I am now eating several dozen anti-inflammatories a day after my glassed were smashed, my shins were kicked and i was struck in a very sensitive area (alright, the face) with what was either a serving tray or a novelty clock made from a warped Alien Ant Farm album. This week's show was inspired by the above incident, even if I was incapable of discussing it openly (ie. I'm not really able to do much right now besides moan and groan).
Words of wisdom from a man who still has the steer by its horns. He does his thing. He lives his life and at 70 something he will probably outlive all of us. I have had the privilege to hang out with John and let me tell you.... well, listen to this podcast, and you will better understand; it is relevant to males and females. He gives some solid advice. Giddy, gets on us at times and brings these two tom cats back to earth ,by clearly stating her objections from the women's perspective.. She's a strong women that's what I love about her. The show is long, but fun. We bounce around other topics, but still stay within the position of a friend, giving a bit of advice. Let us know what you think? And be ready for a new episode next week followed by another. We have lots to catch up on. love you all!! Thanks for listening and also how many of you out there would buy a t-shirt of our show? Let us know. we are eating, surviving on Ramen soup, so we can produce this show. Funding will be greatly appreciated. and let me leave you with this mantra, TURN OFF YOUR TV, you have been reborn. you are twenty again! Now go and have some fun but don't worry, this time you have the money to make life better and that of your buddies from Dirty Bathwater; we will help lead the way to your dating paradise. Traditional dating and our roles have been distorted by today's media, well that's the view of Lux and his guest buddy John from Australia. Giddy attempts to defend women, reminding them that all women are not money grubbing wenches. But the guys touch on dating outside of the Western world. Lux lashes out on senior citizen night Bingo and John's analogy of mature women to spinach will keep you giggling as your hosts try to keep the love boat from sinking in modern-day dating. Giddy has to take out her whip to calm these two tomcats from going overboard as they discuss the continuing drama of dating after 50. if you would like to be a special guest on our show please write us at: litfilm8@gmail.com, or giddyjaden@gmail.com. This week we head to a spooky old mansion as we review the seminal 80s comedy classic CLUE. Is this one of the best comedy movies of all time??? Then, Scott presents a novelty song from a man named Larry Groce titled JUNK FOOD JUNKIE. Pretty self-explanatory! We talk about our favorite junk foods and Kelly uncovers a shocking revelation. Finally, Kelly and Marty close out the final episode of 2020 talking about the whodunit book series CLUE. Based on the board game, wow!
Lux is at it again, searching for the answers of a single 50 something man. How do you know the person you're interacting with isn't a bot or scammer? Or how do you know if they are married? So what's the solution? No strings attached. Dating or masturbating which do you prefer? What is expected on the first date? Is it okay to bring a friend? These are the questions Lux asks as he attempts to embarrass Giddy into a corner. Giddy provides a bit more commentary in her show blog. We chat with Kentucky farm educator and homesteader John Moody to learn how a junk-food-eating city kid ended up as a farmer and farm educator. Moody, who had been heading towards a career in academia so that he could teach, says that in hindsight, “I got a farm so I can teach.”After a health scare, Moody and his wife began to change their eating habits, buy more whole foods and locally grown foods. With the change in food buying habits, he noticed that his food bill went way up. “The farmers aren’t getting any of this money I’m spending,” he thought. His interest in growing food evolved out of his interest in healthy food—especially after meeting farmers who were sceptical about cutting their use of external inputs. So he set out to do it himself.

Also, why do girls love horses? Who were the Wandering Frog People? And a theme song for “Whoops!” (finally).

Hi again from Giddy. Thank you for hanging out with us so far through our first two shows. As we continue our dating adventures with you, we want you to realize we understand your physical and financial insecurities. We are in this together, and we promise you it will get better. We are here to acknowledge it's okay to love again! Let's move ahead, okay…..as we plunge deeper into the tub. Dating is rough, let alone being over 50. Lux opens up about what it is like to be fresh out of a divorce, striped of his assets, and forced to move back with mama. A very humbling experience indeed. Relocated across the state, he is starting all over. Comparably, I feel the same, having moved across the nation to California, with absolutely no support system here. The Big Time Talker Podcast powered by Speakermatch welcomes Mountain Stage host and artistic director Larry Groce to the show! Larry has been with Mountain Stage since its beginning in 1983. His taste and personality have helped set the tone of this long-running radio show. Larry was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1948 and attended Adamson High School in the Oak Cliff section of that city. It was apparently fertile ground for aspiring singer-songwriters at the time as Michael Martin Murphy ("Wildfire"), Ray Wylie Hubbard ("Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers") and the late B.W. Stevenson ("My Maria") attended along with Larry. Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn and Edie Brickel also grew up in Oak Cliff. Larry made his first commercial record album in 1970 for Daybreak Records, a division of RCA. In all, he's made 23 albums, ranging in style from Americana to gospel to children's music. In 1976, his Warner-Curb top ten hit, "Junk Food Junkie," led to radio and television appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, a Disney Channel special, Doctor Demento and A Prairie Home Companion. Of the nine Disney albums he has recorded, five went platinum. In all, 36 of his songs have been included on Disney recordings. In 1976, he was Grammy-nominated for Disney's Children's Favorites Volume I. Visit him online at www.larrygroce.com.

Our first show was sort of a just a catch-all to introduce today's dating world to those of us just trying to advance beyond yesterday! We know it's rough out there , or should I say in here, you know inside the computer world. That's what we are all doing. We are trusting and investing in our computers to hook us up. That is why a good internet connection is a must, right? Nothing like the start of hot conversation, and the line goes dead. That is as frustrating as finding out the ice cream carton is empty, when you reach for some comfort food. “Who ate all the ice cream, and didn't toss the carton?” Well considering I live alone with my cat, it is probably me. She's not tall enough to reach the freezer. Well, we hope you liked our first show. I will be using this blog to expand upon some points made during our weekly podcast. Within weeks she came down with her first sinus infection along with many new and bizarre symptoms. This marked the beginning of a 20 plus year descent into chronic illness. After a full year on multiple rounds of antibiotics, each one stronger than the last, she was still sick. Taking antibiotics had become as routine as brushing her teeth. More diagnoses, more diseases, and viruses were added to her growing list of health problems. She was in a very dark place and couldn't see how she would ever get well. Within three months of taking Sovereign Laboratories Colostrum - LD she was off of those damaging drugs. She doesn’t believe she could have experienced the level of healing she did without this crucial supplement. In her new book Eat Pray Get Well – A Journey from Chronic Illness, Brokenness & Junk Food Junkie to Wholeness & Wellness ( https://www.amazon.com/Journey-Chronic-Brokenness-Wholeness-Wellness/dp/0692170731 ) , Erin takes you through her journey of a difficult childhood, chronic illness, food binging, and her relationship with God along the way to her healing. She also includes 60 anti-candida recipes all free of processed sugar, wheat, gluten, peanuts, yeast, and corn.
