This week, The Filmlosophers are getting local as they delve into a unique film named for and lovingly set in their very own wonderful city: Sacramento! They'll explore how the film captures the essence of their hometown and what makes it so special on the silver screen. But the local love doesn't stop there. In a special, sprawling edition of Conspiracy Theory, the crew embarks on a bizarre and ambitious journey, positing the possibility of a secret expanded cinematic universe that somehow connects the nostalgic coming-of-age story of Stephen King's Stand By Me to a decidedly more bloodsucking final destination, California style. Prepare for some wild leaps of logic and potentially mind-blowing connections! In this episode: Sacramento on Screen: The team will discuss the film's portrayal of their beloved city, analyzing its locations, its atmosphere, and how it contributes to the overall narrative. Expect some personal anecdotes and local insights! Conspiracy Theory: Stand By Me's Shadowy Sequel: The Filmlosophers will meticulously (or perhaps haphazardly) piece together a theory that suggests Stand By Me is the unsuspecting origin point of a much darker, potentially vampiric, cinematic universe. Get ready for a deep dive into seemingly unrelated films and some truly out-there speculation. Join The Filmlosophers for an episode that's a loving tribute to their home city and a descent into the wonderfully weird world of interconnected cinematic universes. It's a journey from the familiar streets of Sacramento to the shadowy corners of a surprising film conspiracy! So pull up a chair, grab your popcorn, and tune in to this week's roadtrip of an episode with The Filmlosophers!

Michael Angarano has been acting since he was an infant and has a long resume of memorable work in both comedic and dramatic roles—“Almost Famous,” “Will and Grace,” “This is Us,” “Gentlemen Broncos,” “Oppenheimer,” to name a few. His latest is a wonderful comedy with a lot of heart that he stars in, co-wrote and directed called “Sacramento.” On this episode he talks about the long road of getting that film made, how he needed to adjust once he saw Michael Cera's approach to the role, and the interesting realization that he may not need to act and direct and write at the same time again. He tells a story about suddenly facing a strange form of stage fright, and the sensitive way Steven Soderbergh helped him get though it. He explains why he says he doesn't have an acting process, has a particular aversion to relaxation exercises, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

Unfortunately, Dave can't make it this week (we miss you), but we (Evan and Megan) carry on in his stead. First we cover Michael Angarano's dramedy SACREMENTO (2:14), where a free-spirited guy (Angarano) cons his anxiety-ridden best friend (Michael Cera) into taking a road trip to, you guessed it, Sacramento. The movie, which co-stars the vastly underused Maya Erskine and Kristen Stewart, has the occasional poignant moment or funny line but is too scattershot for our taste. Next, we review Christopher Landon's thriller DROP (23:02), which stars Meghann Fahy as a widowed, domestic abuse survivor and mother who is terrorized by anonymous threatening messages on her first date in years. We really dig its central mystery, lead performance, intense atmosphere, and sharp commentary on abuse. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Martha Coolidge's 1985 comedy REAL GENIUS in honor of the late Val Kilmer!

But their life is upended when Glenn's old friend, Rickey (Michael Angarano) arrives. A free-spirited young man who wants to enjoy life, Rickey invites Glenn on an impromptu drive across California. Although Glenn has concerns, he reluctantly embraces the opportunity, leaving the safety of his home for the madness of the open road. Hey everyone, Oppenheimer is finally here! Christopher Nolan is back with a new movie on the biggest screens on Earth and of course, it was a marvel behold in IMAX. As a lifelong Nolan fan who often points him out to be the filmmaker that inspired me most to start this show and talk about movies online on a regular basis, this was obviously one of my most anticipated movies of the year. On top of that, I'm a big history guy, especially of this era, so there was definitely an added layer of intrigue for me. So does Oppenheimer rank as one of Nolan's best pieces of cinema EVER... or is it an ambitious misfire from the Hollywood legend? Find out in this review. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. We’ve watched Michael Angarano grow up on screen; he’s been acting since the age of 5. He worked with Meryl Streep at age 12 (in Music of the Heart), got to improvise with Frances McDormand in Almost Famous at 13, then joined the cast of Will & Grace as Sean Hayes’ son in his early 20s. He’s a likable,  unpretentious guy who credits his family for helping him navigate the often-treacherous waters of show-business. Jessie and Leonard had a great time talking with him about his youthful experiences and more recent successes like a running part in The Knick. Coming soon: his debut as writer and director.
