The Last Waltz" (Điệu valse cuối cùng). Trong giai đoạn cực thịnh, hai tác giả chuyên soạn một loạt bài hát ăn khách cho những tên tuổi sáng giá thời bấy giờ như Tom Jones (Delilah), Rod Stewart (The day will come) hay nhóm The Fortunes (Here it comes again) …..Tựa đề bản nhạc "The Last Waltz" (Điệu valse cuối cùng) gồm cả hai nghĩa : lần đầu tiên khi đôi tình nhân vừa gặp nhau trên điệu nhảy bế mạc đêm dạ vũ. Thời bấy giờ, bài hát luôn kết thúc đêm dạ vũ chính là điệu valse mang tựa đề ''I'm Taking You Home Tonight'' (Đêm nay, anh đưa em về).

Award-winning performer John Owen-Jones (Les Miz/Phantom) releases a Christmas single - track one Holly Jolly Christmas and track two On Christmas Eve. Both tracks are taken from John Owen-Jones: The Christmas Album released last year. On Christmas Eve, is a previously unheard track from the vaults of legendary songwriter Les Reed who wrote Delilah and It's Not Unusual among many others. John said “I was given permission to update the original demo Les made and give it a more contemporary feel, so I completely re-orchestrated it. At the same time I took the opportunity to rewrite some of the original lyrics by Bill Martin (Puppet On A String/Congratulations) too and I'm delighted with the result” On Holly Jolly Christmas John said: “This is my fun take on an always popular Christmas classic that was a joy to record and I think it really captures that live-from-your-living-room vibe. I even got some pals into the studio with me to capture some realistic Christmas party crowd sound effects!” Highlights of 2022 include John performing at the Sydney Opera House, creating a leading role in the brand new musical Great British Bake Off and a successful solo UK concert tour culminating with a sold-out show at Her Majesty's Theatre in London's West End. John will be performing more concerts in December. In 2023 John returns to the West End in the Great British Bake Off Musical with a lead role as Phil Hollinghurst! This year John released his own theatre-based podcast with fellow Broadway and West End star Alistair Brammer called ‘The Last Show on Earth' that asks special guests the question: What show would you see if you had one night left on Earth? The first episode aired on Friday 3 June with guest Matt Lucas and new episodes are released monthly. At just 26, John became the youngest actor ever to play the role of ‘Jean Valjean' in the West End and was the first British actor to play the role both in the West End and on Broadway. John Owen-Jones has also played the role of ‘The Phantom' in ‘The Phantom of the Opera' nearly 2000 times - more than any other actor in the history of the West End production. John has so far released five albums, ‘John Owen-Jones' (2009), ‘Unmasked' (2012), ‘Rise' (2015), ‘Bring Him Home' (2016) ‘Spotlight' (2019) and ‘The Christmas Album' (2021) Hosted on Acast. 1968 was a year of disappointments for the Monkees.  During this year their television series was cancelled, their first motion picture effort failed at the box office, and band member Peter Tork would leave the group at the end of the year.  Despite all this they would still find success in their fifth studio album, The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees.  This album would chart at number 3 in the United States and would sell over a million copies.Members Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork had gained artistic control and the right to play their own instruments by 1967, and all band members were credited as producers for the songs on this album.  However, much of the music on this album was created by members going their own separate ways and working with session musicians to create the tracks, with few collaborative efforts represented on the album.  Nevertheless, the album shows a diverse range of styles from broadway pop, to country & western, to psychedelia.  Songs from Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Michael Nesmith are represented on the album, and only Peter Tork is excluded.  Tork would contribute piano work to the song “Daydream Believer,” but little else on the album.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez brings us this album in Wayne's absence.  Daydream BelieverJohn Stewart of the Kingston Trio wrote this song, and it was originally performed by the Monkees with Davy Jones singing lead.  It hit number 1 on the US charts.  The original lyrics were “and now you know how funky I can be,” but “funky” was changed to “happy” due to concerns that funky might have drug or other unsavory references.Auntie's Municipal Court Mickey Dolenz sings lead on this track composed by  Michael Nesmith and Keith Allison.  We feel it has a “jangle pop country feel.”  The title doesn't appear in the lyrics, and writer Michael Nesmith has no recollection why it was named as it was.  It was not the only song whose title was not referenced in the song.  Valleri  Tommy  Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote this song with Davy Jones on lead.  It reached number 3 on the US charts and would be the last top 10 showing for the Monkees.  Guitar work is done by Louie Shelton, a session guitarist with the Wrecking Crew.Zor and Zam Bill and John Chadwick penned this track, sung by Mickey Dolenz.  It is an unusual anti-war song in the Monkee's catalogue.  The lyrics describe preparation for a war between two kingdoms, but no one shows up when the war is supposed to happen.  This psychedelic track closes the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Andy Griffith Show”This long running series on the life and time of Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, North Carolina ended its run in this month.  STAFF PICKS:Kiss Me Goodbye by Petula ClarkBrian's leads off the staff picks with a Les Reed and Barry Mason composition.  This song would reach number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and would be the last time Petula Clark reached into the top 30 on that chart.  Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) by The First Edition Bruce brings us a psychedelic rock song recorded by the First Edition as their second single, and the first to feature Kenny Rogers on lead vocals.  It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Charts and was Rogers' first top 10 hit.  The solo is played by Glen Campbell with heavy compression and tremolo to get the psychedelic feel.  The lyrics are a warning about the dangers of LSD.Lady Madonna by the Beatles Rob's staff pick is a well-known tune.  This was written by Paul McCartney, and marked a change into a more rock sound from the psychedelic sound they had previously explored.  It talks about a working class mother who has something to do every day of the week.  A Beautiful Morning by the RascalsMike features a very optimistic tune from a prolific group.  This easy breezy song was written by Rascals members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, Jr. in Honolulu, Hawaii, where beautiful mornings are a common occurrence. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:2001:  A Space Odyssey (Also Sprach Zarathustra by Ricard Strauss)Stanley Kubrick would make this Richard Strauss theme famous in his epic science fiction movie based on the Arthur C. Clarke book. The film as released this month in 1968....and we couldn't pronounce it either!!

These are short, ten- to twenty-minute bonus podcasts which get posted to Patreon for my paying backers every time I post a new main episode -- there are well over a hundred of these in the archive now. If you like the sound of these episodes, then go to patreon.com/andrewhickey and subscribe for as little as a dollar a month or ten dollars a year to get access to all those bonus episodes, plus new ones as they appear. Click below for the transcript Transcript A few episodes back, we took a look at the Who's early records, and in passing we talked about the Ivy League, the studio group who sang backing vocals on their first single under that name. In this bonus episode, we're going to look at one of the biggest hits any of the members of the Ivy League were involved in -- a record that became a massive hit, won a Grammy, and changed the career direction of one of the most important comedy bands in Britain. We're going to look at "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band: [Excerpt: The New Vaudeville Band, "Winchester Cathedral"] In his book Revolution in the Head, Ian MacDonald makes the point that the quintessential line in British psychedelia is from George Harrison's "It's All Too Much", where Harrison sings "Show me that I'm everywhere, and get me home for tea". Whereas American psychedelia is often angry and rebellious -- understandably, since it was often being made by people who were scared of being drafted to fight in a senseless war, and who were living through a time of great instability more generally -- British psychedelia was tinged with nostalgia, both for childhood and for a lost past of the Empire that had now ended. Now, we're going to get into that in much, much, greater detail when we look at the records the Beatles, the Kinks, the Who and others made in this period, but suffice to say that *one* of the several streams of thought that shaped the youth culture of Britain in the 1960s was a nationalistic one, partly in reaction to a perceived dominance by American culture and a belief that there were things about British culture that deserved celebrating too. And part and parcel of that was a celebration of the popular culture of the 1920s and thirties, the height of Britain's influence in the world. This nationalism, incidentally, was *not* necessarily an entirely regressive or reactionary thing, though it certainly had those elements -- there was a strong progressive element to it, and we'll be unpacking the tensions in it in future episodes. For the moment, just take it that we're not talking about the sort of flag-waving xenophobia that has tainted much of modern politics, but something more complicated. This complex relationship with the past had been evident as early as the very early 1960s, with acts like the Alberts and the Temperance Seven reviving 1920s novelty songs in what would now be considered a postmodern style: [Excerpt: The Temperance Seven, "You're Driving Me Crazy "] That had temporarily gone into abeyance with the rise of the Beatles and the bands that followed in their wake, making guitar music inspired by American Black musicians the new popular thing in British culture. But that stream of the culture was definitely there, and it was only a matter of time before music business professionals would notice it again and start to try to capitalise on it. And Geoff Stephens did just that. Stephens was an odd character, who had entered the music business at a relatively late age. Until the age of thirty he worked in a variety of jobs, including as a teacher and an air traffic controller, but he was also involved in amateur theatrics, putting on revues with friends for which he co-wrote songs and sketches. He then went on to write satirical sketches for radio comedy, writing for a programme hosted by Basil Boothroyd, the editor of Punch, and started submitting songs to Denmark Street publishers. Through his submissions, he got a job as a song plugger with a publishing company, and from there moved into writing songs professionally himself. His first hit, co-written as many of his songs were with Les Reed, was "Tell Me When", the debut single for the Applejacks, which made the top ten: [Excerpt: The Applejacks, "Tell Me When"] Many hits as a writer and producer soon followed, including writing "The Crying Game" for Dave Berry: [Excerpt: Dave Berry, "The Crying Game"] And signing Donovan and co-producing his first two albums and earliest hit singles: [Excerpt: Donovan, "Catch the Wind"] Stephens had been making hits for a couple of years when he conceived the novelty record "Winchester Cathedral", which he recorded with John Carter of the Ivy League on lead vocals, imitating the style of Rudy Vallee, one of the most popular singers of the 1920s, who sang through a megaphone -- he became popular before electronic amplification was a big thing. The record was made by session players, and released under the name "The New Vaudeville Band": [Excerpt: The New Vaudeville Band, "Winchester Cathedral"] The record immediately began to sell. It became a massive, massive, worldwide hit, selling three million copies and inspiring a cover version by Rudy Vallee himself: [Excerpt: Rudy Vallee, "Winchester Cathedral"] Oddly, this wasn't the last time in the sixties that a major hit would be inspired by the sound of Rudy Vallee... But Stephens had a problem. People wanted the New Vaudeville Band to tour, and he didn't actually have a touring act. So he turned to the next best thing. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band were a band of dadaist comedy performers who had a wonderful stage act, which among other things involved their lead singer Vivian Stanshall wearing a gold lame Elvis suit, their drummer Sam Spoons playing spoons and washboard, and comedy moments like band members holding up speech bubbles, so for example when someone took a solo, one of the other members might hold up a cardboard speech bubble saying "Wow! I'm really expressing myself!" Their repertoire largely consisted of novelty tunes -- some from the fifties, but mostly songs they'd learned from old 78s from the 1920s, like their first single: [Excerpt: The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, "My Brother Makes the Noises for the Talkies"] As Bonzos guitarist Neil Innes always told the story, Geoff Stephens was friends with the band's trumpet player Bob Kerr, and called him up asking if the Bonzo Dog  Doo-Dah Band wanted to be the touring New Vaudeville Band. Kerr was excited -- his band would get to be proper pop stars! But when he went to talk to the rest of the group, they were dismissive. They were conceptual artists and creative people, and didn't want to be a manufactured pop band. Bob Kerr, on the other hand, thought that being paid vastly more money to do exactly the same stuff he was doing for next to nothing sounded like a great idea, and quit the band. The next thing the rest of his bandmates knew, they were watching him on Top of the Pops, performing with a band with a spoons player, a lead singer who wore a gold lame suit, and band members holding up cardboard speech bubbles. Kerr had taken the group's entire act, and they had to reinvent themselves, turning from 1920s pastiche to modern rock music -- and the chances are very good that we'll be following them up in the future. But of course, as well as an act, the new group needed a singer, and for that Stephens turned to Alan Klein. Now, this is not the Allen Klein who we've mentioned in the main podcast, and who will be coming up again in future episodes. This Alan Klein was someone who had been on the margins of the music industry as a writer and performer for some time. He'd made records with Joe Meek: [Excerpt: Alan Klein, "Striped Purple Shirt"] and he'd co-written the musical What A Crazy World, which had been made into a film which featured his songs being sung by Joe Brown, Marty Wilde, Freddie and the Dreamers, and...Harry H Corbett: [Excerpt: Harry H Corbett: "Things We Never Had"] He'd also made a single solo album, "Well, At Least it's British", which took a satirical look at British life in the 1960s that was hugely influential on Britpop in the 1990s, though the record sold almost nothing at the time: [Excerpt: Alan Klein, "Twentieth-Century Englishman"] With Klein as the new lead singer, the New Vaudeville Band were a real band. And indeed, they had three more top forty hits in the UK, though their most successful song after "Winchester Cathedral" was a song that Stephens and Les Reed wrote for them which wasn't a hit for them: [Excerpt: The New Vaudeville Band, "There's a Kind of Hush"] That *did*, though, become a big hit for Herman's Hermits: [Excerpt: Herman's Hermits, "There's a Kind of Hush"] The New Vaudeville Band were shortlived -- they only had a handful of hits, and Bob Kerr soon left the group after falling out with their manager, Peter Grant -- another figure who we'll definitely be hearing a lot more from in future episodes of the main podcast. Kerr formed Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band with Sam Spoons and Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell, two other former members of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, and they had a quietly successful career doing the same act that the early Bonzos had -- all three men also joined in Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band reunion tours in 2006 and 2016. A revived version of the New Vaudeville Band, featuring only the drummer from the touring lineup, performed in the 70s and 80s to little success. But the group's biggest legacy remained their first hit, which actually won the Grammy for Best Contemporary (Rock & Roll) Recording in 1967, beating out a shortlist of "Eleanor Rigby", "Monday Monday", "Cherish", "Good Vibrations", and "Last Train to Clarksville". You can decide for yourselves if "Winchester Cathedral" was, in hindsight, a better record than those. But whether it was or not, it was a fun record that made a lot of people happy. Geoff Stephens, its creator, is unlikely to feature further in this podcast. He wrote many more hit records, but they were almost exclusively for artists like Dana, Tom Jones, Wayne Newton, Ken Dodd, and Mary Hopkin, whose careers lie largely outside the scope of a history of rock music, however broadly defined. He had a long and successful career, but died last Christmas Eve, aged eighty-six, from pneumonia, having been weakened by an earlier bout of covid. So as we enter a second Covid Christmas, I'd just like to say I hope you're all vaccinated, boosted, and otherwise safe. I'm hoping to get one more episode and bonus out before Xmas Eve, and I hope to see you all still here in the New Year. Vo-de-o-do [Excerpt: The New Vaudeville Band, “Winchester Cathedral”]

#612 - Les Reed OBE The Les Reed Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Les Reed O.B.E., was one of the greatest contributors to popular music and the songs he co-wrote are all of the evidence you need. “It's Not Unusual” is the signature song of Tom Jones, and “Delilah,” recorded by Jones is one of Tom Jones' most beloved songs. Les Reed had a hand in both of these. “There's a Kind of Hush,” is one of the songs most associated with Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits, but there's more. Les Reed has written songs recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Englebert Humperdinck, the Dave Clark Five, Connie Francis, Petula Clark, The Carpenters, Barry Manilow and too many others to list. On top of all of this, Les Reed was a very open-hearted man and one with great gratitude for those who enjoyed his work. This interview will take you into the musical heart and mind of a truly great composer. This week we introduce you to the debut album from a 24 year-old lad from Wales.  Thomas John Woodward - today Sir Thomas John Woodward - is better known as Tom Jones. He got his start as the front man for a beat group called Tommy Scott and the Senators, but they really didn't go anywhere beyond South Wales.  Gordo Mills became his manager, took him to London, and renamed him Tom Jones after the Academy Award winning film of the same name released in 1963.Jones' first hit would be the one for which he is always remembered.  "It's Not Unusual" went to number 1 in the UK within a month of its release, and it went to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 when released in America.  Mills and Les Reed worked quickely with Jones to get an album out to take advantage of the quick success, and the result is this album - Along Came Jones.  Jones would have only moderate success with the rest of the songs on the album, but would see more fame when he recorded songs from movies, including "What's New Pussycat," by Burt Bacharach, and the theme song to the James Bond film "Thunderball."Tom Jones is synonymous with Las Vegas, and he spend a good bit of time there almost from the beginning.  His first stint was at the Flamingo in 1967.  He made a lot of money in club performances in Vegas rather than in extensive recording.  After moderate success with his first few albums, Mills directed Jones more in the direction of the crooner we know today. We hope you enjoy this early foray into this iconic singer. I've Got A HeartThis is the opening track on the album, and a very positive song.  The boy is singing about having "a heart that really needs somebody, " and "a mind to keep her, to hold her tight, oh yeah, yeah, yeah."  Not the most sophisticated lyrics you will encounter, but it is early in the rock era after all..Whatcha Gonna DoThe album was a mix of cover songs and songs written for Jones, and this is one of the covers.  Originally written by American blues and rock singer Chuck Willis, it cautions against running around on your girl. The RoseGordon Mills wrote this song for Jones.  It is basically the knights errand to win his love by finding the rose of love.  "For my true love I yearn, but I'll never, ever return till I find where that red lady grows."It's Not UnusualThis is where it all started for Tom Jones.  Gordon Mills and Les Reed wrote this song which was released in February 1965, and it entered the charts the week it was released.  It was number 1 on the UK charts a month later, and would define Tom Jones' career. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:What's New Pussycat?  by Burt Bacharach (from the motion picture What's New Pussycat?)Woody Allen's first screenplay would become this comedy film.  Peter Sellers and Peter O'Toole starred in this movie.  Tom Jones would achieve success from singing this song for the soundtrack as well. STAFF PICKS:I'll Keep Holding On by The MarvelettesRob starts off our staff picks with this female Motown act.  They were the first successful Motown act after The Miracles.  This song was written by Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, and peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The original members were  Gladys Horton,  Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart Motley, and  Wanda Young.  Young is on lead for this one.Help Me Rhonda by The Beach BoysBrian brings us a well known surfing standard and rebound song.  This song has guitarist Al Jardine on lead vocals, and Glen Campbell was playing lead guitar as a session musician.  Darryl Dragon (aka The Captain from Captain & Tennille ) is also playing on this track.  Take a Heart by The SorrowsWayne's staff pick is the title track off the debut album from “Freakbeat” band The Sorrows.  One of the most aggressive R&B bands of their time, The Sorrows were known for their fast guitar solos and thudding drums.  They never achieved much success, perhaps because their style of music was just ahead of its time.  The song itself cautions against breaking hearts and turnabout.Feeling Good by Nina SimoneBruce's staff pick is a song from Broadway recorded by Nina Simone in 1965.  It was not released as a single at the time, but has seen a resurgence recently in period pieces and commercials. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) by the T-BonesThis instrumental drew its inspiration from an Alka-Seltzer commercial and was recorded by Dave Pell and members of The Wrecking Crew.

What is it with modern films?....they must save a fortune on electricity because they are all made in the dark.....what we are subjected to is actors who mumble so you can't understand what they are on about coupled with dark sets both inside and outside...SWITCH THE LIGHTS ON!!....you turn the sound up so you can hear them whispering then back down again as the music and gunfire blasts out....of course this is if you can find a film worth watching on TV....a very difficult task these days....if it wasn't for the police searching for murderers there would be no stories at all.....like the music and entertainment industry its all gone down the drain. 2.There has been a lot of publicity regarding scams and people losing all their savings etc.....it's easy to say they should know better but there should be a lot more education from the media especially for the old and vulnerable.....these scammers are professionals and know how to con people big time....it's even done on a legal basis with loan companies and banks....they are NOT your friends...the car dealer for example is a great bloke until you decide you don't want the car...the time share touts...they are all out there trying to separate you from your money....there are very few genuine BARGAINS in the world.....we are a nation of moaners and complainers.....what is needed is action.....if restaurants are overpriced I don't go there....if the drinks are expensive I don't drink there.....and if I can get an item cheaper on Amazon that's where I go....if everyone did this then perhaps the greedy big boys would get the message and bring their prices down....sitting around and moaning won't solve anything. 3.Just in case you didn't know....our Theresa May is resigning....and there she was announcing it outside number 10 to the pack of wolves waiting to rip her apart....and the media showing the same bit where she nearly broke down crying....so now her loyal staff have removed their knives from her back and put themselves up for the job....so we might get Boris Johnson at the helm or...God forbid...Michael.Gove....mind you if HE gets the job comedy will make a welcome return....the comics will have a field day.....I often wonder if Mickey Gove actually knows what's going on....if you were to write a play about the last three years of government in this country no-one would believe it....it's like a hotch potch of headless chickens frantically seeking publicity to enhance their careers reported on by a media consisting of school fifth formers.....come back Guy Fawkes all is forgiven. 4.I listened to your interview with the late great Les Reed which I enjoyed...what a great guy and what a massive talent....he was one of the last great songwriters....a breed that has sadly vanished.....he gave us wonderful hits by the likes of Englebert and Tom Jones and many more plus he was a brilliant musician.....I have always been a big fan of his work and many years ago I heard him interviewed on the radio and he introduced an instrumental by the John Barry 7 which I THOUGHT he said he composed and it was the melody of Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Any More"....which was credited to Paul Anka....this bothered me for years asI am not a fan of Mr.Anka so I wrote to Les Reed and put this to him....he replied with a lovely letter explaining that he was referring to a different song and was sorry to say that it was Paul Anka's....and went on to wish me good luck with my songwriting....that's what makes a quality bloke. 5.The song this week is one I found in my drawer from back in the day......it was a song I wrote about Chester Zoo and which I pitched to the Zoo and they ordered a stack off me (that's the way to do it).....it is sung by a lovely young lady called Julie Bright who did the clubs and was one of my female session singers....and as she was from Chester she got quite a bit on mileage from the song

Roger Blyth entertains in the afternoon with ‘City Extra’ on Liverpool’s Radio City in Summer 1978. As with so many of the early stations, it spread its geographic wings as much as it dare – serving ‘the North West and North Wales’. The City Show-mobile was on the road too. More station IDs than earlier generations, at a time when the industry was just getting accustomed to audience research. The ad breaks illustrate how varied and competitive the local retail world was – and listen out for a Kenny voice-over. Comprehensive news too, featuring a posh Roy Hattersley - and talk of inflation lying at 7 or 8% - with the prospect of it even remaining in single figures. A bit of speech for no apparent reason in the form of an interview down a bad phone line – as was often the case back then - and a more useful public service campaign to persuade parents to immunise their children. No segues – but alongside the hits of the day, enjoy Les Reed and the Pop Proms Orchestra. Roger died in 1997.

This week Tim Marshall joins me to reflect on the past week at Saints. Tim, who’s been on the show before, kindly joined me last minute, when my scheduled guest woke up ill (ps. Hope you get better soon, very much looking forward to having you on soon)! Tim jumped in and we recorded a show that had a lot to break down. Considering the week that was with Les Reed departing, Martin Hunter leaving, Ralph Krueger’s interview with Adam Leitch and more. Then, we get to the actual match against Watford, where some sort of Sunday League Referee wound up on the pitch and made a mess of it all. Tim and I also discussed the events that took place ahead of Remembrance Sunday, with the enhanced focus on WWI and the contribution of Southampton as a city, as the day of recording marked 100 years since the end of hostilities. In all, I hope you enjoy the show, despite the long length, and we’ll be back next week with more. I was joined this week by Josh Kingdom, @JoshuaKingdom02 on Twitter, who, among other things, writes for @SaintsMarching_. This time of year is a bit weird for fans, myself included. The season is over, we’re uncertain as to who else will be leaving, staying, coming, or going around the club, and yet we’re trying to keep everyone up-to-date with what’s happening. That’s part of what makes Josh’s article so interesting. Amid all the speculation, he’s put together a “wishlist” of players who would fit our system if we lose players and would strengthen our squad if, as Les Reed suggested, we don’t sell everyone this summer. Be sure to check out his articles here and here, give him a follow on Twitter, and enjoy the show. Also, if you haven’t checked out the player reviews on the Ugly Inside YouTube channel, be sure to do so by clicking here and subscribing… they even have Pablo Zabaleta on an episode (the Jack Stephens episode).   The podcast now has a Facebook page (as do I). Be sure to check out the great edits, competitions, and polls he has going on over there. On this episode you heard a riff from BB King, I didn't create or recreate it, I just thought it was a good fit for the show. The song I’ve sent you this week is one I wrote for David Alexander back in the day….it’s close to the anniversary of his sad passing…and I know he was very popular in Spain. It is called “Let’s Keep It Simple” which he recorded and put it on his album celebrating his marriage to Penny Page…..I wrote a pot of stuff for them both…including the title track of the album…great guy..I miss him. It’s been a busy week….top of the range songwriter Barry Mason is coming to do a show at our weekly Cheshirecats rock and roll nights which we put on every Wednesday. I’ve put a band together to back him consisting of Derek Green on bass (ex Del Renas)….Tony Cavanagh on drums…myself on guitar and a young genius called Paul Rowbottom on keyboards…because Barry sings in some very strange keys and we are working with songs arranged by the great Les Reed it is a major challenge to say the least …so we have been rehearsing and we’re getting there….should be a great show and a feather in the cap of our organisation. And this week it was nice to see Lee Curtis who brought his band along and Brian “Griff” Griffiths of The Big Three turned up (he’s on holiday from the States) and did a spot…so it’s all happening at the moment. Also on the music scene I read in the paper that Van Morrison has been knighted…I know the guy is a great musician and has a big following but…knighted? I like his music but he’s got no stage personality….so you may as well sit at home and listen to one of his CDs…..I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again …when is Ken Dodd going to receive his knighthood?…he has to be the greatest entertainer in history…and has given so much to show business….I don’t know how they come up with the names….(I wont mention Sir Jimmy Savile…and Sir Rolph Harris) There’s been a lot of complaints about parents parking outside schools when dropping their children off…it has been suggested by some empy headed politician that the teachers should be given the power to slap a parking ticket on offending cars….oh!…that’s a good idea…that will go a long way to help teacher parent relations….most people are fine but you’ll always get the odd one who doesn’t consider anyone but their stupid selves…that’s a given…not to mention the aggression which the teachers are not paid to endure. On top of all this a head teacher was interviewed on breakfast TV by the unbearable Piers Morgan who was asking really intelligent questions like “Are you happy to make disabled people have to park some distance away and have to struggle to get their kids into school”…which is about the level of Mr.Morgan’s intelligence….the whole point is to prevent the loss of life of a youngster….it only takes some fool in a hurry to back over a kid then everyone will jump on that bandwagon. A possible answer would be to have a proper contract drawn up with the rules and regulations of the school which the parents must sign….if parents break the rules they are in breach of contract. I had to laugh at a documentary on BBC4 about the rock band Uriah Heap….two of the original members were reminiscing about the old days…so funny. They said they were travelling first class everywhere and throwing big parties and didn’t realise that it was coming out of THEIR money….they made an album called “High and Mighty and decided to promote it with a photo session in the revolving restaurant at the top of a mountain in Switzerland (the one in the James Bond film) and invited the press to come along and enjoy the “free” travel and booze…when they got to the photo session a fight broke out amongst the band members so there was no photo session….now THIS is rock and roll. That’s what these young hopefuls don’t realise….the record companies give you nothing…it’s YOUR money you are blowing.
