Save That Lobster!
The great boom of the lobster industry is, in many ways, a story of success. For more than 30 years, Canada's most valuable seafood export has generated wealth for Canadian fishing communities and created an appetite around the world for the luxury food. But it's also come at a tremendous cost – Indigenous fishers have been excluded, and scientists have warned warming waters and overfishing are severely affecting catches, causing high tensions and sometimes violent fights.Greg Mercer, investigative reporter for The Globe and author of Lobster Trap: The Global Fight for a Seafood on the Brink, joins the podcast to talk about how the gold-rush mentality of the multi-billion dollar industry is creating a crisis for both the shellfish and its environment.Questions? Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. Join us as we walk into battle with the Lord for Kingdom of Heaven. Zea's out sick this week, so the NAFC boys hold down the fort with all the usual chaos. Mox checks out the Chainsaw Man movie and gives his take on whether it lives up to the anime's bloody legacy. Meanwhile, Izzy's had enough of Alien Earth—he's officially turning on the direction, and he's got receipts. The crew then dives into The Lobster (2015), a bleak, absurdist look at love, loneliness, and turning into sea creatures if you stay single too long. It's weird, it's dark, and it's exactly the kind of movie NAFC was made for. Support us on Patreon!

EPISODE 597 - Kate Woodworth - Little Great Island, A Story of a Commuity of fishing families to the lobsters and the butterflies impacted by Climate ChangeKate Woodworth is the award-winning author of the novel Racing into the Dark, which Publishers Weekly said, “hits the mark repeatedly with emotional truths and fluid prose” and which Kirkus Reviews called, “vivid and honest, dramatic and without pat resolutions: an impressive debut”.A passionate lover of the natural world, Kate is the author of essays on the impact of climate change on fishing and farming that have been published by the Climate Fiction Writers League and on her Substack, “Food in the Time of Climate Change.” Her novel about love, community, and climate change, Little Great Island, has been called “an extraordinary achievement and a pure pleasure to read” by National Book Award and PEN/Faulkner Award winner Ha Jin. Kate is the founder and creative force behind “Be the Butterfly”, a grassroots climate action initiative that invites everyone to do one small thing to help mitigate climate change. Kate received her MFA from Boston University.Little Great IslandOn Little Great Island, climate change is disrupting both life and love. After offending the powerful pastor of the cult where she's lived for a decade, Mari McGavin must flee with her six-year-old son. With no money and no place else to go, she returns to the tiny Maine island where she grew up—a place she swore she'd never see again. There Mari runs into her lifelong friend Harry Richardson, one of the island's summer residents, now back himself to sell his family's summer home. Mari and Harry's lives intertwine once again, setting off a chain of events as unexpected and life altering as the shifts in climate affecting the whole ecosystem of the island…from generations of fishing families to the lobsters and the butterflies.Little Great Island illustrates in microcosm the greatest changes of our time and the unyielding power of love.“An uplifting and grown-up novel in which two lost souls find love and purpose”—Kirkus Reviews“…utterly grounded and achingly empathetic, developed with gorgeous, flowing prose and a steady, sometimes heart-wrenching plot.”—Booklisthttps://katewoodworth.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

In 1982, director Steven Spielberg followed up Raiders of the Lost Ark with a family-centered feature about a young boy who meets an alien, based on his own childhood experience of creating an imaginary friend after his parents' divorce. With a budget of just over $10 million, Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison brought the alien to life with the help of Italian special effects master Carlo Rambaldi, with the music of John Williams hitting all the right notes. Add in some product placement from Reese's Pieces (let's not talk about that Atari video game) and a stellar young cast including Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore, and the flick was a hit. In fact, it surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, until Spielberg's own Jurassic Park broke the record in 1993. Much of the film feels iconic now, from William's score to the flying bikes. Critic Roger Ebert, in an essay he wrote in 2002 as a letter to his grandchildren about watching it with them, wrote of that moment: “I remember when I saw the movie at Cannes. Even the audience there, people who had seen thousands of movies, let out a whoop at that moment.” But despite the praise, it's worth remembering that Columbia Pictures put the film in turnaround, and M&Ms passed on the opportunity to feature their candy because they thought the film would scare children. So, over 40 years since its release, is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial still worth phoning home about? Or is it better left in the back of the childhood closet? Michael Dean — architect-turned-writer, O'Shaughnessy Fellow, and creator of Essay Architecture — joins the show to explore the hidden structures beneath nonfiction and why essays, like buildings, can be designed with patterns rather than left to inspiration. We discuss the origins of Essay Architecture, Michael's 27-pattern framework that maps essays across Idea, Form, and Voice, and how to make craft teachable and AI feedback useful without replacing the writer. Along the way, we dive into architecture school critiques, why publishable doesn't mean perfect, how editing rewires thinking, and the cultural risks if we keep treating writing as vibes instead of patterns. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois tackle the latest headlines shaping Canada's food and retail landscape before welcoming back a dynamic entrepreneur reshaping the seafood category. The conversation begins with a heated national debate: should Canada eliminate the Temporary Foreign Worker Program? Sylvain outlines the program's critical role in agriculture, agri-food processing, and restaurants, weighing the Conservative proposal to phase it out against industry concerns. He highlights the tension between labour shortages in rural communities and youth unemployment, noting how food service has become “addicted” to low-wage labour. Michael points to staggering statistics—40,000 people applied for seasonal jobs at the Canadian National Exhibition—illustrating the urgency of balancing wages, job availability, and immigration. From labour, the hosts turn to politics and trade. They unpack Quebec's cabinet shuffle and the departure of one of the province's longest-serving agriculture ministers, praising his role in championing Canada's Grocery Code of Conduct. Sylvain also reveals how Cody Blois, now Secretary of State to Agriculture in the Prime Minister's Office, may wield more influence over ag policy than the minister himself. There's cautious optimism with both China and India as Canada reopens diplomatic channels, while debates over canola's contribution to GDP spark discussion about food security, branding, and farmer uncertainty. The news segment also dives into consumer behaviour trends: Tim Hortons' launch of a protein-fortified latte (with Starbucks poised to follow), the surging popularity of food delivery apps despite their impact on food literacy and household budgets, and the mixed fortunes of Canadian farmers—livestock producers are enjoying high returns, while grain and dairy producers face challenges. Finally, Michael and Sylvain discuss Cracker Barrel's failed brand refresh, underlining the importance of innovation that resonates with consumers. The second half features a spirited interview with Charlotte Langley, Founder of Nice Cans and CEO of Langley Foods. A chef, ocean steward, and veteran food entrepreneur, Charlotte shares how her cheekily named canned seafood brand is making sustainability delicious. She explains how pushing for MSC certification in Portugal helped transform the entire sardine fishery, elevating sustainability standards across 21 operations. Charlotte also details her collaborations—like a World Oceans Day partnership with Cheekbone Beauty—and the creative process behind launching new products that are both innovative and scalable.Special listener discount: Use code DELISHFISH for 20% off
Director Ridley Scott returned to outer space with the 2013 Alien prequel Prometheus, set on a distant world, and two years later, when he adapted Andy Weir's best-selling 2011 novel, Scott visited another extraterrestrial destination, albeit one relatively closer to home: Mars. On the Red Planet, Matt Damon plays an astronaut stranded by fate who must survive in the harsh environment while his NASA colleagues come up with plans to rescue him. With an ensemble cast, including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover, and Benedict Wong, the film was an interplanetary success, premiering at Number One and going on to top the box office for multiple non-consecutive weekends. Just a month after its release, the film surpassed Gladiator to become Scott's highest-grossing film at the domestic box office. With Weir's novel Project Hail Mary set to get the big screen treatment next year, we're visiting The Martian for its tenth anniversary, and we promise to bring him home when we're done! The weedfish is cryptic. That doesn't mean that it speaks in riddles or leaves notes that no one can decipher. Instead, it's easily hidden—it blends into its environment. Divers say it's so well disguised that even if you find one, it's impossible to find it again if you look away for even just a second. There are several species of weedfish. Most of them live around New Zealand or southern Australia. They're mainly found in shallow waters, living in dense beds of kelp—the “seaweed” that's anchored to the bottom. The weedfish is small—no more than about seven inches long. It has a slender body that's crested by a tall, forward-angled fin that looks a bit like a mohawk. It feeds on small fish and crustaceans, usually at depths of no more than a hundred feet. Each species of weedfish blends in with the type of kelp bed it inhabits. The golden crested weedfish, for example, has a canary-yellow body with a streak below its eye like a dark teardrop. Other species have their own colors and patterns to match the background.Like many other fish, the weedfish is facing some tough times. Lobsters, fish, and other types of marine life have been overharvested. That's allowed sea urchins to flourish. And they gorge on kelp, sometimes wiping out entire beds. Without the kelp, there's no place for the weedfish to hide. So there's nothing cryptic about it—the population of weedfish could plunge in the decades ahead.

As a nation of foodies, we watch the food and beverage (F&B) scene closely to see who comes and goes. Synopsis: Join Natasha Ann Zachariah at The Usual Place every Thursday as she unpacks the latest current affairs with guests. In recent months, the headlines have been dominated by farewells as home-grown restaurants, bakeries, bars and even dining chains have called it a day. This week’s casualty: Prive Group, which operated cafes and the Empress restaurant at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Its restaurants closed on Aug 31. It has been a difficult year for the industry, which has seen other big names such as Eggslut and Burger & Lobster exit, modern European restaurants Imbue and one-Michelin-starred Poise shutter, and popular chains like Haidilao close outlets. Is it just about rent hikes, and could it be that we, as diners, are part of the problem - always chasing the next hot concept? In this episode of The Usual Place, I spoke with two veterans who are in the F&B scene in different ways: Mr Bjorn Shen, a consultant and chef-owner of Artichoke and Small’s in New Bahru with “22 years of cooking” STFood Online editor Eunice Quek, who has been reporting on the industry for about 15 years Highlights (click/tap above): 6:08 Bjorn explains why F&B owners have no choice at times but to pay higher rents 9:10 Are landlords the problem or are manpower costs a bigger issue? 12:53 “It’s always about chasing something new,” says Eunice on food trends; Crazy about Chinese and Korean cuisine now? 17:45 Singaporeans are not as adventurous as we think we are, says Bjorn about our foodie nation status 27:49 Should the Government step in with measures to help F&B business owners? 36:50 Singapore vs other countries: Bjorn breaks down what works and what doesn’t Host: Natasha Ann Zachariah (natashaz@sph.com.sg) Read Natasha’s articles: https://str.sg/iSXm Follow Natasha on her IG account and DM her your thoughts on this topic: https://www.instagram.com/theusualplacepodcast Follow Natasha on LinkedIn: https://str.sg/v6DN Follow STFood Online on IG: https://www.instagram.com/straitstimesfood Filmed by: Studio+65 Edited by: Eden Soh, Teo Tong Kai & Natasha Liew Executive producers: Danson Cheong, Elizabeth Khor & Ernest Luis Follow The Usual Place Podcast and get notified for new episode drops every Thursday: Channel: https://str.sg/5nfm Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/9ijX Spotify: https://str.sg/cd2P YouTube: https://str.sg/theusualplacepodcast Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg --- Follow more ST podcast channels: All-in-one ST Podcasts channel: https://str.sg/wvz7 Get more updates: http://str.sg/stpodcasts The Usual Place Podcast YouTube: https://str.sg/4Vwsa --- Get The Straits Times app, which has a dedicated podcast player section: The App Store: https://str.sg/icyB Google Play: https://str.sg/icyX -- #tup #tuptrSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
2522 - Yeshua chose the most radical, law-abiding, anti-Christian zealot to become His spokesman to the unclean Gentiles aka Lobsters. At first, only Jews were Christians, although today the majority are Gentiles. Does this mean these Gentiles must keep the Law of Moses? The Bearded Bible Brothers once again hit the high seas to become the ultimate Lobstermen like Rabbi Paul.
It's autumn in New York, and we're feeling the love with another Nora Ephron rom-com. This week, we're dialing up the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan tale of “boy meets girl in internet chat room, boy discovers girl's true identity, and then boy kills girl's business and destroys her livelihood.” Audiences loved the third team-up of Hanks & Ryan (following Joe Versus the Volcano and Sleepless in Seattle) in this flick that retells Miklós László's 1937 play Parfumerie, which had previously been adapted as The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 and In the Good Old Summertime in 1949. Updated for the early online era, this version features an ensemble including Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Steve Zahn, Dave Chappelle, and Jean Stapleton. Although the movie booked over $250 million at the box office, not all critics penned rave reviews. One reviewer called the film “almost unwatchably saccharine, representing pretty much everything wrong with today's big-budget, high-concept Hollywood filmmaking,” while others bemoaned its rampant product placement. Less than two years after its release, the corporate marriage was consummated when America Online, the originator of the film's titular salutation, and studio Warner Bros. merged to form AOL Time Warner. But will our hosts fall for this rom-com spam? Or will You've Got Mail be left on read? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. We've almost run out of time for Aug-Heist: The Getaway, but not before we go on the run with one final film. This week, we're finally doing a proper prison break movie with a little-seen 2010 slow-burn thriller from director Paul Haggis, who won back-to-back Best Picture Oscars with Million Dollar Baby and Crash. Russell Crowe stars as a husband willing to go to any length to free his wrongly convicted wife from prison, even if that means breaking her out himself. Co-starring Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Lennie James, Brian Dennehy, Liam Neeson, the film adapts the 2008 French release Anything for Her (Pour Elle) and was filmed on location in Pittsburgh. But with a dead-on 50% Tomatometer score, what final verdict will our hosts hand down? The summer of The Getaway is almost over, so we'd better enjoy The Next Three Days! (00:00) Golf Tips & Lobster Dinner Experiences This chapter takes us on a journey through a recent golf outing where John encountered an older golfer struggling with his iron shots. While John suspected ball position might be the issue, he humorously redirected the golfer to Jeff for expert advice. Before diving into golf tips, we switch gears to talk about an unexpected culinary adventure involving live Maine lobsters. Jeff recounts receiving the lobsters from a friend, not realizing they would arrive alive, and the experience of having them cooked to perfection by a club chef. This anecdote transitions into a plug for the Portland Lobster Company, where you can order live lobsters shipped directly to you, accompanied by a reminder to keep those rubber bands on their claws. This episode is a delightful mix of golf advice and culinary surprises, wrapped up with laughter and camaraderie. (10:38) Improving Iron Play Golf Techniques This chapter focuses on improving your golf game by mastering posture and balance, particularly when facing challenges with your iron shots. We explore the importance of maintaining a consistent and balanced posture for every club, from drivers to irons, and how this can significantly impact your swing and ball contact. I share practical tips on setting up your stance, such as checking your grip, ensuring your body and club are in balance, and aligning the ball position correctly relative to your stance. We also address common mistakes golfers make, like altering posture for different clubs, and emphasize that achieving one singular best posture is key to consistent performance on the course. (19:35) Practice Techniques for Better Golf Swing This chapter explores innovative techniques for improving your golf swing without relying on a ball, such as using pennies or tees to focus on swing mechanics and reduce tension. By shifting the focus away from the ball's destination, golfers can improve their swing fluidity and precision. We also share a personal anecdote about working with golfers on the course, highlighting the importance of real-world practice in improving performance. Additionally, we touch on the intricacies of the FedEx finals and the complexities of seeding players, drawing parallels with NCAA tournament seeding. The conversation offers insights into the challenges of designing a fair championship format while emphasizing the unpredictability and excitement inherent in golf. (25:13) Fairway Bunkers and Downhill Lies This chapter takes us onto the golf course at Talking Rock, where I engage with two golfers struggling with fairway bunkers, fairway balls below their feet, and downhill lies. We focus on practical strategies to tackle these challenges, starting with a hands-on session where we explore how to effectively manage a fairway bunker. We discuss the importance of assessing the sand's firmness, selecting the right club—often a hybrid for its wide sole plate in soft sand—and adjusting foot positioning for stability. I highlight the decision-making process before swinging, emphasizing the importance of ball positioning and bracing oneself on sand. This practical approach results in improved performance, demonstrating how informed decisions can lead to successful shots. (40:01) Achieving Perfect Swing Plane Sensation This chapter explores the transformative experience of a golfer who discovered the power of the "hinge and thump" technique to improve his swing. We discuss how introducing this method, which emphasizes getting the thumbs up on the backswing and then thumping the ground, helped the golfer hit better shots across various clubs—from wedges to drivers. Initially focused on steepening the swing, the golfer learned to prioritize the outcome of the ball over the appearance of his swing, realizing that despite feeling steep, his swing was perfectly on plane. This realization led to a breakthrough in his 40-year golfing journey, highlighting the importance of feel versus reality in achieving consistency and accuracy. (43:37) Improving Golf Swing Plane Simplified This chapter highlights the transformative impact of Jeff Smith's golf coaching, as shared through a story of a grateful client who improved his game after a lesson. We explore the nuances of golf swings with different clubs, focusing on the feeling of the shaft's vertical position. As we transition from wedges to longer clubs and fairway woods, I explain how the perceived verticality of the shaft can change and what that means for your swing. Tune in next week for more insights and tips to enhance your golfing experience, and remember, if you have any questions or need advice, reach out to us at weekendgolfguys@gmail.com.
