Summary: Make sure you keep the volume on this episode down so as not to disturb your neighbors! Today, Holly and Devin dive into the wonderful world of apartment buildings. They discuss how stacking people like blocks in a single building can facilitate both a lust for blood as well as good old fashioned lust. Whether you've always lived in a single family home and have only seen apartments in shows like Friends or you're listening to this from an apartment right now, our hosts have got what you need to explore this living situation!  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:31): Holly discussed Lock Every Door by Riley Sager, a thriller following Jules Larsen - a recently unemployed, heartbroken 25-year-old in desperate need of monday. When offered, she jumps at a high-paying job to apartment-sit at The Bartholomew, an exclusive, elite Gothic-style Manhattan apartment building. The rules of her stay are strange, but Jules shakes it off…until a fellow apartment sitter, Ingrid, disappears. Holly's key takeaways were: The Bartholomew is inspired by real-life historic buildings in NYC. Its creepy, opulent design creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that mirrors traditional haunted house stories while the brooding atmosphere, secretive residents, and eerie silence create a modern gothic mood that amplifies the creepiness of the plot. Jules is uncertain whom to trust, and her increasing paranoia drives much of the suspense, keeping readers questioning what's real and who's dangerous. The story follows her as she navigates fear, gaslighting, and manipulation - ultimately reclaiming power through courage and tenacity. With the desperate and financially strapped Jules staying in an apartment building designed for the wealthy elite, the novel explores how financial insecurity can make people vulnerable to exploitation—highlighting the stark contrast between the wealthy and the desperate. The Heart (15:26): Devin discussed Lease on Love by Falon Ballard, a romance following Sadie Green - a sharp, ambitious woman who has just thrown her finance career out the window with a single outburst. With her career thrown in a blender and her housing situation dire, she drinks away her sorrows and browses roommate listings which lands her an appointment for what she thinks is a spare bedroom. She meets Jack Thomas who offers her the entire first floor of his spacious and beautiful Brooklyn Brownstone for a fraction of what he could charge. From there, Sadie and Jack both work on rebuilding - both themselves and their lives. Devin's key takeaways were: The apartment—this big, cozy Brooklyn brownstone—is practically a third main character. It becomes a safe haven for both Sadie and Jack. It's not just a setting, but the space that allows them to let their guards down and build something real. Both Sadie and Jack are at emotional crossroads, and their relationship becomes a soft space to land. The story leans into themes of trust, grief, and rediscovering purpose—not just in love or their respective careers but in self-worth and their personhood. Beyond the romance, Lease on Love is a celebration of strong friendships and emotional community as people navigate the rough waters of their 20s. Sadie's friend group and Jack's quiet generosity show that love can be a team sport and vulnerability and collaboration pave the way to happiness. Hot On the Shelf (33:35): Devin: Just Playing House by Farah Heron Holly: Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor What's Making Our Hearts Race (37:33): Devin: A new candle warmer!  Holly: Love on the Spectrum Season 3   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Hey, hey, hey everyone!!! We are so grateful you're here with us! We had a great time recording our nice basic episode! This one is exactly 45 minutes so it's perfect for that car ride to or from work! Just to go ahead and let you guys know, there was some funkiness with the audio during this recording! It's not too noticeable (we hope), but you may hear a slight buzz/ vibrating noise while we are talking. It should not hinder your enjoyment of this fun little episode but if it does, we apologize! ALSO, Brookie has continued to make this mistake! She, for some reason, thought that I'm Thinking Of Ending Things by Iain Reid was adapted into a TV show BUT it is NOT a TV Show adaptation!!! Oopsies!! It's definitely a film adaptation done by Netflix! It is marked as a horror/thriller movie. We should have some fun merchandise available soon! Be on the lookout for sure! I'm sure this goes without saying, especially if you have actually listened to our episodes, but we are still pretty new at this. We are coming along just fine though and are learning how to do better! So we just wanted to say thank you so much, kindred spirits ;), for your patience and support! So with THAT being said, a little later on in episode 7, we had a bit of an incident while recording the podcast! So there is a moment where we are steadily talking about how excited Becky is to use the Kindle app to read to us suddenly being in silence and wondering whatever just happened. This happens at 38 Minutes and 43 Seconds into the episode! So once again, we are deeply sorry and thank you for your wonderful patience! ALSO, the “mouse” that is mentioned in the first few seconds was a toy mouse!SO, Goblin by Josh Malerman is the book club winner! Yayyyyyy! How exciting! We are also hoping to be able to provide decent enough book recommendations to anyone who is interested! Just shoot us an email and every episode we will try to recommend you a book based on the prompt you sent us! We will more likely than not only do ONE per episode, but that's subject to change! AND a random Q & A segment wold be fun! Ask us anything you want and we might answer it! Fans of Riley Sager's work know that he is a master at delivering twist after twist in suspenseful thrillers like “Home Before Dark,” “Lock Every Door,” and his latest, “Survive The Night.” Sager joins the podcast to talk to Olivia about the novel, its protagonist Charlie, and why the film student fears she may be the Campus Killer's next victim. He set the book in 1991, the same time that Sager was a college student, allowing him to reference his own favorite music and movies to bring the story and tension to life. Sager talks about how post-pandemic readers may tap into their own feelings of being trapped as they journey along in the car next to Josh, not knowing when or how the road trip will end, or who will survive the night. See below for links to the companion movie and music playlist for “Survive the Night.” Olivia admits to the author that this is her first time reading his work—another reliable recommendation from Margaret! In a Moment with Margaret, they discuss the Spotify playlist (and movie list!) the author crafted as companions to his latest book. Margaret also recommends “Summer of ‘69” by Elin Hilderbrand, a different genre, but a book that also taps heavily into music to set the scenes and the period. https://www.rileysagerbooks.com/survive-the-night-movie-guide https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3cgIbYbNQSFuj8g8xxhscE?si=febc64122c9c4b5b

A girl, a killer, a car-- the premise for bestseller Riley Sager's latest novel, Survive the Night, feels dauntingly simple, but by focusing on solid character development and intense dialogue while omitting needless setting changes and extra characters, he allows the simple brilliance of the story's concept to shine through. Riley, a returning guest on the podcast, is the international bestseller of Final Girls and is known for other bestselling novels like The Last Time I Lied and Lock Every Door. To purchase Survive the Night, follow the link below. From Amazon.com: Riley Sager is the pseudonym of a former journalist, editor and graphic designer. Now a full-time author, Riley's first thriller, FINAL GIRLS, became a national and international bestseller that's been translated into more than 25 languages. His subsequent novels, THE LAST TIME I LIED, LOCK EVERY DOOR and HOME BEFORE DARK, were instant New York Times bestsellers. His newest thriller, SURVIVE THE NIGHT, will be released in June. A native of Pennsylvania, Riley now lives in Princeton, New Jersey. When he's not working on his next novel, he enjoys reading, cooking and going to the movies as much as possible. His favorite film is "Rear Window." Or maybe "Jaws." But probably, if he's being honest, "Mary Poppins." Whether you're traditionally published or indie, writing a good book is only the first step in becoming a successful author. The days of just turning a manuscript into your editor and walking away are gone. If you want to succeed in today's publishing world, you need to understand every aspect of the business - editing, formatting, marketing, contracts. It all starts with a good book, then the real work begins. Join international bestselling author J.D. Barker and indie powerhouses, J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon, as they gain unique insight and valuable advice from the most prolific and accomplished authors in the business. In this episode, you'll discover: The cons of using too much nostalgia Why different mediums impact the feel of a story How to pace yourself when writing How to keep your readers off balance The importance of a good title Links: J. We are very pleased to bring you Bestselling Author Riley Sager as he talks his latest book "Survive the Night." Riley Sager is the pseudonym of a former journalist, editor and graphic designer. Now a full-time writer, Riley is the author of FINAL GIRLS, an international bestseller that's been published in 25 languages, and the instant New York Times bestsellers THE LAST TIME I LIED, LOCK EVERY DOOR and HOME BEFORE DARK. His latest book, SURVIVE THE NIGHT, will be available June 29 from Dutton Books. www.rileysagerbooks.com "Survive The Night": It's November 1991. Nirvana's in the tape deck, George H. W. Bush is in the White House, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer. Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it's guilt and grief over the shocking murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it's to help care for his sick father—or so he says. The longer she sits in the passenger seat, the more Charlie notices there's something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn't want her to see inside the trunk. As they travel an empty, twisty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly anxious Charlie begins to think she's sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie's jittery mistrust merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination? One thing is certain—Charlie has nowhere to run and no way to call for help. Trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse played out on pitch-black roads and in neon-lit parking lots, Charlie knows the only way to win is to survive the night.

It was great to have Bestselling Author Riley Sager on the show to talk about his latest book "Home Before Dark." Riley has some great news to share and so much more, check it out. Riley Sager is the pseudonym of a former journalist, editor and graphic designer. Now a full-time writer, Riley is the author of FINAL GIRLS, an international bestseller that's been published in 25 languages, and the New York Times bestsellers THE LAST TIME I LIED and LOCK EVERY DOOR. His latest book, HOME BEFORE DARK, is available now. What was it like? Living in that house. Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity—and skepticism. Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father's book. But she also doesn't believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don't exist. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father's death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the past, chronicled in House of Horrors, lurk in the shadows. And locals aren't thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie's father. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself—a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father's book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction. Alternating between Maggie's uneasy homecoming and chapters from her father's book, Home Before Dark is the story of a house with long-buried secrets and a woman's quest to uncover them—even if the truth is far more terrifying than any haunting.
