This is the second-to-last of our summer reruns; new episodes back Sept. 18 on the Patreon feed and Sept. 25 on the main feed! For this one, we're taking a break from looking at the ways that sitcoms advanced American discourse about LGBTQ people and instead gawking at campy 80s fluff — because that is also a thing that is important to gay people. “Jennifer: The Movie” (October 29, 1983) We're celebrating both Halloween and week two of our celebration of Ann Jillian with an episode about how the 1983 NBC series Jennifer Slept Here is both so very weird and also a little gay boy's fantasy — because it pairs an awkward boy with glamorous ghost, and that's secretly what every little gay boy wishes he had to guide him through his awkward years. This is peak 80s, but also it has one of the best sitcom themes ever, regardless of decade. Watch Drew's video of the 1982 Night of a Thousand Stars fashion show, which features Ann Jillian looking like her most Debbie Harry ever. Gawk in awe at: The opening to Mr. Smith The opening to Double Trouble The opening to Mr. Merlin The opening to Down to Earth The opening to Ann Jillian Ann as the Red Queen in the live action Alice in Wonderland + the very scary Jabberwocky scenes

Les, Kurt, and Jason have referenced the 1983 NBC sitcom Jennifer Slept Here many times on this podcast, so they've decided to finally dissect the pilot episode along with a look into the state of of TV in the early 1980's. But first, Jason is trying really hard to get Les and Kurt to take the hint that it's time to move onto the Black Chyna Report! Then, it's time to start the Ann Jillian deep dive, talking It's a Living, the SAG-AFTRA strike then and now, and Walt Disney's input into Ann's career. Then it's time for Jennifer Slept Here. Ann Jillian may have top billing on this short-lived series, but the real heavy lifting of the show is done by (*checks notes*) the kid that played Randy Quaid's son in National Lampoon's Vacation, John Navin. John may be the person that uttered the very first line of dialogue on Cheers, but here's he's doomed from wearing a fedora multiple times. Maybe Jennifer should have slept somewhere else (like with the Family Ties Keaton family, or within Wilfred Scott's weather report), but here she's just the Nurse Jackie of her day.  Facebook / Instagram / Threads @lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

Ken Levine's captivating career is a buffet of boyhood wish fulfillment. Ken became a disc jockey, a sitcom writer, a Major League Baseball announcer, a cartoonist, an author and a playwright. He's not done. New adventures include podcasting and standup comedy.Ken's book, The Me Generation by Me: Growing Up in the Sixties chronicles his journey through a Southern California childhood with adventures that include friendships with child stars, radio nerd penpals, appearances on The Dating Game, and a crush on Laura Petrie that inspired him to believe that comedy writing was the route to landing a hot wife. (Mission accomplished.) By age 19, Ken was a UCLA sophomore, interning at KMPC when Gary Owens sent his writing samples to George Schlatter who offered him a job on Laugh In! But Ken had to turn it down. Leaving college would have invited an immediate draft notice. Ultimately, ROTC and the National Guard prepared Ken and his partner David Isaacs to write a MASH spec script which led to jobs at The Jeffersons, The Tony Randall Show, MASH, Cheers, Frasier, The Simpsons and beyond.Ken shares with us his stories about all of these legendary shows, plus his foray into the world of MLB announcing, his cartooning, and his current podcast, Hollywood and Levine. And Ken comes to us straight from the WGA picket line so he is here to explain the standoff and help us all stand up for writers' rights and the future of writing. And Fritz and Weezy are recommending the filmReality, about Reality Winner on HBO Max and Jury Duty on Freevee.Path Points of Interest:The Me Generation by Me: Growing Up in the 60s Ken LevineHollywood and Levine PodcastKen Levine BlogKen Levin Author Page on AmazonKen Levine on FacebookKen Levine on InstagramReality on MaxJury Duty on Freevee

Michael Keaton, Teri Garr, Martin Mull and Ann Jillian star in 1983's "Mr. Mom." Keaton plays Jack Butler, a Detroit auto engineer who's laid off from his job at the height of a recession. When Jack's wife (Garr) takes a job at an ad agency, Jack takes over the homemaking duties. We're not gonna lie: this is the WORST movie we've discussed so far - in spite of the fact that it's first screenplay written by John Hughes! While Rich and Kofi argue that the themes and tropes of the film are tired and outdated, Blake challenges that assumption with academic research suggesting we're not as far removed from the hardened gender roles of the 1980's as we might otherwise think.

Tread Perilously introduces a new sitcom into the Grab Bag rotation with the It's A Living episode called "Boys of Summer." When a Minor League team checks into the hotel, the staff at Above the Top get involved with its members in a variety of ways. Maggie manages to both flirt with and insult the team manager at every turn. Dot takes pity on a Costa Rican pitcher whose whole future rests on winning the series. Cassie refuses to give the star hitter the time of day and Jan goes into extra innings with the third baseman. Will the team win their games? And will Sonny Mann ever get to play his set? Erik carefully peels back the onion to prove why It's A Living is important despite getting lost in the TV landscape. Justin ruminates on why it was so easily forgotten. The stories of Ann Jillian and Louise Lasser get told. Sort of, anyway. Justin finds his way to It's A Living's premise and tries to examine the program via the Four Temperament Ensemble principle. The Golden Girls comes up frequently. A Terminator favorite makes a special appearance. The Minor League Baseball player look is nearly defined. Erik is convinced George Clooney is preventing him from finding episodes of E/R and, surprisingly, sports humor occurs.

Les, Kurt, and Jason went into this week's movie, Hallmark's Sister Swap: A Hometown Holiday, thinking that it would involve body switching or twins (or both), but those expectations weren't met. But before the movie sucks them in, first they have to discuss Blac Chyna being accused of kidnapping someone (and equally accused of being high on cocaine and crazy). Then the guys are ready to dissect a movie that features both Williams sisters (Kimberly Willams-Paisley and Ashley Williams, not Venus and Serena) in what appears to be a 2 part movie that is told from one sister's point of view with this movie, and from the other sister's point of view in the next movie (which will be discussed on the next podcast). Any movie that can veer conversations about the sex appeal of Charles Fleischer (aka the voice Roger Rabbit… and Laverne's next roommate after Shirley moved out), the comparability of Bob Dole and The Big Ragu, and Beaver Cleaver's trashy girlfriend can't be all that bad. Plus, if nothing else, listen to this episode to hear the pilot of Kurt's new podcast all about Ann Jillian.    Facebook : alifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

Kevin and the Mayor conclude their look back at the TV shows that debuted in 1980! It was the year of Tom Selleck in Hawaii and Tom Hanks in drag. Deputy Enos left Hazzard County for Los Angeles. The biggest stars in country music shared a stage with the Krofft puppets. Future stars like Martin Short and Linda Hamilton popped up in shows nobody remembers. (Our apologies to all you diehard fans of I'm A Big Girl Now and Secrets of Midland Heights...) We also had Ted Knight, Ann Jillian, Shaun Cassidy... and a short-lived reality show that introduced the world to a certain Mr. T. Want more? Okay, how about... the Solid Gold dancers! You're working on your time machine right now, aren't you? See you forty years ago.
