In Washington, a rare flicker of institutional resistance is lighting up the political gloom. As the Supreme Court sides 7-2 against mass deportations and Harvard takes legal aim at executive power, Roifield Brown and his panel ask the awkward but necessary question: Is the American Republic finally growing a spine? Panelists Denise Hamilton and Mike Donahue agree that while Trump's pressure tactics aren't new, the scale of legal and educational defiance certainly is. Meanwhile, they also highlight the existential threat: America's fragmented information ecosystems mean citizens no longer even start from the same facts, making any comeback for democratic norms a grinding uphill struggle.Across the Atlantic, a different kind of existential crisis unfolds. Robert Jenrick, already measuring the curtains for Tory leadership, hints at a tactical realignment between the Conservative Party and Reform UK. Cory Bernard and Steve O'Neill dissect the fine line between electoral pragmatism and political self-destruction. They warn that while Britain's political history favours the Conservative Party's survival, wealth inequality and voter volatility could easily tear up the rulebook. Roy Field, clearly unimpressed by complacency, reminds everyone that assuming Britain's institutions are immune to collapse is dangerously naive. The panel closes with a lighter moment: each guest picks a hometown hero worthy of a street name. Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, and Clement Attlee are among the choices, though Steve O'Neill's initial bid for "Roger Federer Street" suggests some people should stay away from naming contests. Throughout the episode, the tone is bracing: whether it's executive overreach in the U.S. or far-right drift in the U.K., democracy's defenders will need a lot more than nostalgia and wishful thinking to hold the line.5 Selected Quotes:“I think what we're seeing is a stiffening of the spine and a bigger commitment to holding up our institutions.” — Denise Hamilton“It's not left versus right anymore — it's institutions versus chaos.” — Roifield Brown“You can't rationalize with people who aren't working with the same facts.” — Mike Donahue“Britain's political history doesn't guarantee immunity from collapse.” — Roifield Brown“One street at a time, we still get to choose who we celebrate.” — Denise Hamilton Hosted on Acast. On this episode of Mid Atlantic, host Roifield Brown, broadcasting from sunny Oakland, takes on a transatlantic feast of political intrigue with guests Aram Fischer, Cory Bernard, Denise Hamilton, and Mike Donahue. In the U.S., Kash Patel's confirmation as FBI director raises alarm bells about the erosion of institutional integrity. Denise calls it “catastrophic,” while Aram points out the grim normalization of political weaponization. The panel digs into Robert F. Kennedy's new role as health secretary, questioning what it means for evidence-based policy when a vaccine skeptic helms public health. Trump 2.0 looms large, with concerns about transactional diplomacy in Ukraine and a revamped "America First" agenda that feels all too familiar.Across the pond, the UK's proposed youth mobility scheme sparks debate. Cory argues it's a pragmatic fix for Brexit's labor shortages, but Mike warns of political skittishness. Nigel Farage's departure from Reform UK has mixed implications—could his influence truly wane? Kemi Badenoch's warnings of Western decline also come under the microscope, with the panel parsing whether this is a genuine call to unity or a veiled push against multiculturalism.Notable Quotes:“We need these institutions to work, and they are being compromised from the inside out.” — Denise Hamilton“It's a hostile takeover of government, plain and simple.” — Aram Fischer“If you think the park ranger was keeping you from living your best life, maybe reevaluate.” — Denise Hamilton“Farage knows how to speak to regular people, but that doesn't mean he's good for them.” — Mike Donahue“We need someone to present a vision of Britishness that feels real—not just a reactionary echo.” — Cory Bernard Hosted on Acast. This episode of Mid Atlantic tackled the seismic aftermath of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's assassination in Manhattan—a shocking act that's ignited a visceral debate around corporate greed, healthcare inequality, and public anger in the United States. Panelists Roifield Brown, Steve O'Neill, Mike Donahue, and first-time guest Jimmy the Giant dissected the complex implications of this event and its broader societal resonance. The conversation explored whether the act, dubbed a political assassination, was a rallying cry against systemic injustices or an alarming escalation of violence. Hashtags like #FreeLuigi underscore the public's anti-corporate sentiment, but as the panelists debated, this moment seems unlikely to translate into political action. They compared the U.S.'s profit-driven healthcare system with the NHS in the UK, noting the deep cultural attachment to universal care in Britain. Warnings of privatisation were raised, but the panel largely agreed that such moves in the UK would spark resistance.Ultimately, the discussion reflected on the growing unity across political lines in America against corporate overreach. Yet, skepticism loomed about whether this sentiment could coalesce into meaningful reform in a system dominated by money and lobbyists.Five Key Quotes:Steve O'Neill: “The NHS is a national institution that Britons hold dear—it's not just a service; it's an identity.”Mike Donahue: “If a CEO profits while people die for lack of healthcare, it's hard not to call that systemic evil.”Jimmy the Giant: “This isn't one person's greed; it's a system designed to disconnect responsibility.”Royfield Brown: “For 40 years, neoliberalism has hurt working families; now it's time for a new way of doing politics.”Jimmy the Giant: “If you want to privatize the NHS, you don't attack it—you underfund it until the public gives up on it.” Hosted on Acast. This episode of *Mid Atlantic* brings together voices from both sides of the Atlantic to dissect political developments in the U.S. and the U.K. Host **Roifield Brown**, broadcasting from a rainy Birmingham, UK, leads a panel discussion with guests from Nevada, London, Los Angeles, and Liverpool. **Tonye Alltrade** shares her recent visit to the birthplace of democracy in Athens, reflecting on its enduring relevance. The conversation quickly pivots to U.S. politics, with an analysis of Kamala Harris's recent economic push, and a lively discussion of Trump's policies and the upcoming Waltz vs. Vance debate. Mike Donahue critiques Trump's economic misunderstanding, while Z Cohen Sanchez highlights how Harris is struggling to wrestle the narrative away from Trump's populist rhetoric. The conversation then turns to the U.K., where **Steve O'Neill** provides insight into the Labour Party Conference, and how Keir Starmer's campaign, with its message of competence over hope, contrasts with Harris's style. They also discuss the recent announcement on winter fuel payments, which sparked significant debate. Steve explains the Labour government's decision to reduce the payments, arguing that the triple lock on pensions still protects the poorest. However, **Tonye Alltrade** and others express concerns about how the policy has been received, especially its impact on pensioners who are already struggling with rising living costs. Mike Donahue adds that the political handling of the issue has been clumsy, giving the opposition an easy line of attack. The episode wraps up with a deep dive into the Windrush scandal and the slow compensation process for its victims, with **Roifield Brown** voicing his frustration over the government's lack of accountability.**Quotes:**1. "We need to make sure we have an educated populace to keep democracy going." – **Tonye Alltrade**2. "It's just when will this national nightmare [Trump] come to an end?" – **Mike Donahue**3. "Labour's campaign is all about rolling up sleeves, not hope." – **Steve O'Neill**4. "We deliberately slow-rolled this. It makes me disgusted to be British." – **Roifield Brown** on the Windrush scandal.5. "Young people can't buy homes, and one in five pensioners are millionaires. But these same grooming tactics are rife in cult-like churches. So says Mike Donahue, a child sexual abuse survivor who spent many adult years serving under popular author and youth leader, Jeanne Mayo. On this edition of The Roys Report, Mike joins host Julie Roys to tell his tragic but riveting story, revealing shocking truths about megachurch culture. During his childhood, Mike was abused and neglected, making him easy prey for sexual predators. These predators exploited his need for love and attention to fulfill their perverse sexual desires. After escaping these predators, Mike found hope in Jesus and became a Christian. Yet, instead of finding safety in the church, Mike says he found another predator: well-known author and youth leader Jeanne Mayo. Mike says Mayo exploited his same need for love and belonging—not to satisfy sexual appetites, but her craving for success and growth. In this eye-opening discussion, Mike reveals the predatory recruitment tactics he observed in Mayo's ministry and others, and then was coached and trained to imitate. But he also talks about his journey of discovery, and how he changed after being convicted that the way he was ministering was wrong. “You have no clue what is going on with me, you just don't understand what I'm going through!” If you have been on the receiving end of a statement like that from an emotional teenager, then you know how much raw emotion and frustration can come with those words. That sounds like an over-exaggerated statement spoken out of severe frustration, but if your adolescent child is saying that to you, it is probably one of the most truthful things that has come out of their mouths since they turned thirteen.  Here is a common statement you may hear from the general public about teenagers; “it's so difficult to be a teenager today.” While that is an accurate statement, most people stop there in their analysis because if we are honest, we really don't know WHY it's so hard. We all agree that things are getting tougher for teens seemingly every day, but very few of us have spent enough time in that world to really unpack what makes it so tough. We tend to project our own adolescent experience on to a generation that has had to deal with a barrage of social media platforms and influences, Covid-19 shutdowns, unprecedented social change, and a world that is constantly communicating that their worth is tied to who they are socially.   One of the most important things you must keep in mind if you are a parent of a teenager is, the social pressure that young people are facing today is 100 times harder than it was when we were growing up. Social media threw gas on an already pressure packed dynamic. In this podcast we take a look at what's really going on in that world. So, if you ever struggle with talking to your teenager, whether you're a parent, educator or youth leader, you are going to really enjoy this episode—the second in this series with Mike Donahue, an experienced practitioner who has over 25 years of constant exposure to young people in school assemblies and trainings. Ken Boddie has ben a stellar journalist at KOIN-TV for 36 years. He's the longest-running on-air, TV-news reporter in Portland. Before Ken, it was Tracy Barry (2018), then me (2014), and I took over from Mike Donahue (2012), just something I kept track of. Ken and I crossed paths many times in our journalism careers, but I know him much better after this conversation. He's covered politics, business, the Rajneeshees, and every major news story over three decades. We also have the morning news anchor shift in common. What Ken knows first-hand, and I never will, is what it is to be a person of color in Portland and on the air. His perspective is unique. Ken shares a recent episode he experienced that turned into one of the most important news stories of his career.

The growing global population is putting a lot of pressure on the world's natural resources and its natural infrastructure – the forest, prairies, agricultural lands, estuaries, coasts, and wetlands that we all depend on. Protecting and restoring the health of our natural infrastructure is paramount if we want to continue to enjoy the many economic, environmental and social benefits that it provides. In this episode, we’re talking with two people who believe that sustainable natural infrastructure is critically important, and they are leading their organizations and others in taking positive action to promote natural infrastructure solutions as part of standard practice, rather than as an afterthought or add on.   In this episode of the Engineering With Nature® Podcast, guests Don McNeill, Business Development Manager for Caterpillar’s Earthmoving Division and director of the Natural Infrastructure Initiative (NII), and Dr. Mike Donahue, Vice President of Water Resources & Environmental Services at AECOM, discuss the need for natural infrastructure solutions. As the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, Caterpillar is making sustainable progress possible, driving positive change on every continent. AECOM, an American multinational engineering firm, which is recognized globally for its excellence in infrastructure design and engineering consulting, is promoting natural infrastructure solutions with their clients and identifying opportunities to incorporate it in project designs. In this podcast, we talk about how their efforts to find more sustainable infrastructure solutions that incorporate the principles and practices of Engineering With Nature, and therefore, contribute to its evolution.   To put the infrastructure challenge in perspective, Don talks about a recent McKinsey Institute study that suggests approximately $3.7 trillion a year is needed in global infrastructure to adapt to population growth and sustainability goals. Unfortunately, only about $2.5 trillion a year is currently being invested. Don believes that increased natural infrastructure investments, with its cost-effective solutions and multiple benefits, can help shrink that $1.2 trillion gap. This thinking underlies the Natural Infrastructure Initiative (NII), launched in 2017 by Caterpillar.   NII brings together a group of companies and organizations to promote the use of natural infrastructure projects that advance economic vitality, environmental health and safety in communities. Membership includes the following organizations: AECOM, Brown & Root, Caterpillar, Dawson & Associates, Ducks Unlimited, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, The Nature Conservancy, The University of Georgia and recently, Conservation International.   NII’s objectives include: creating awareness to support the benefits and uses of natural infrastructure; growing investments, active projects and consideration of projects that embed natural infrastructure thinking; developing and promoting new tools, processes, and capabilities to support natural infrastructure uses and investments; and advocating for policy and legislation to increase the opportunities, considerations and ultimately the quantity of natural infrastructure projects.   These objectives are well aligned with the forward-looking approach of EWN. Mike talks about AECOM’s work with the USACE on nature-based, engineering pilot projects and their collaboration on the development of the Natural Infrastructure Opportunities Tool (NIOT), which is a tool for sharing information and identifying opportunities for developing on-the-ground natural infrastructure solutions.   As Don and Mike emphasize, the ultimate goal, is to see natural infrastructure solutions become institutionalized in the analysis of project options – not an afterthought. Sometimes built infrastructure is the right solution, sometimes natural infrastructure is best, and sometimes a hybrid solution combining both will be the most effective. Don notes, “when we're talking about natural infrastructure, this is an ‘AND’ and not an ‘OR’.” The trend toward greater acceptance of natural infrastructure solutions will continue and grow.     Related Links: EWN Website ERDC Website Natural Infrastructure Opportunities Tool Caterpillar Inc. Losing your child is probably your worst nightmare. Losing them to suicide is beyond gut wrenching! How do you know when their serious or using their threats as manipulation? That’s what we’re talking about on this episode Of Course.. They Make Me Crazy! Dr. Daniel Lobel is the guest speaker. He is a clinical psychologist with more than 25 years of experience. He’s also written two books titled - When Your Daughter Has B-P-D and When Your Mother Has Borderline Personality Disorder. I decided to have Dr. Lobel on after talking with Mike Donahue on from Value Up.Org. The father of five children talked about getting your kids to value themselves. He stressed how important that is. He also mentioned that more teen suicides are happening in affluent homes because the kids grow up not wanting to rock the boat of the perfect lifestyle their parents have created for them. What? That’s hard to hear, I get it. You should go back and listen to that episode too! I wanted to bring Dr. Lobel on because you could probably use more insight into teens and their suicidal thoughts and threats. And, that's exactly what you'll get when you listen. There is a chapter in one of Dr. Lobel’s books called Boundaries with Self-Destructive Behavior. He writes self-destructive behaviors encompass a large spectrum of acts that convey different feelings and meanings. He’ll take us through what those behaviors are and what to look out for if you have a teen at home that you’re worrying about. Would love to connect with you! This might surprise you or maybe not. Teen suicide rate is up 25% nationally. That’s crazy scary! The United Health Foundation came out with that stat. UHF ranks health among teens. If you’re a parent, aunt, uncle, a teacher, mentor or even a babysitter…you should listen to this! Without a doubt … you’re going to look at the kids in your life differently. You might not agree with what it said. Whether you do or don’t … let us know why! By us … I mean myself and my guest Mike Donahue. Donahue, helped established a school program called Value Up in 2016. He goes into schools and talks about all issues concerning teens - drugs, anxiety, anger, loneliness, social media. More importantly he helps teens find value in themselves and the importance of it. Donahue created Value UP with Craig Scott. Scott was a student at Columbine High School during the massacre in 1999. He was under a library table with two friends during the shooting ...both killed. His sister Rachel was the first killed that day. You might have already heard them speak. They have spoken to millions. Been keynotes for the American Association of School Administrators, The National Education Association and The National PTA Conference. They have done countless media interviews with Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America … and now thankfully with me, April Norris. Donahue wrote a book titled, "Talking To Brick Walls." Anyone that has ever tried to communicate with a teenager on drugs, alcohol, sex or bullying knows that it can be very difficult. In his book, he shares secrets with you on how to get through to them. In a chapter he says, “Pain is a key ingredient to learning. And when we take that away we are hurting our children.” Do you think we’re teaching kids how to be victims? I say, "Hell yes!" It's not intentional, but it's happening. I have been wanting to do this podcast on this subject since I moved to Douglas County, Colorado. It's an affluent area. The average household income is nearly 120K! That’s double the U.S. average! I was astounded by the teen suici

We hope you had a chance to attend our Take Five for Your Future webcast, "Mad Men 2013: How agencies are adapting to the times and trends of a multi-screen world" on October 30th. If you couldn't join us, or want to review some of the information again, you can view the complete webcast here. A panel of experts including John Collins, Managing Director, Broadcast & iTV at Media Storm, Mike Donahue, EVP, Strategic Partnerships at the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's), Greg Siano, EVP, Director of Media Services at The Tierney Agency, Ken Nippes, Vice President/Media Director at Cramer-Krasselt and Chip Meehan, VP, Content Partnerships at Comcast Spotlight, on how agencies need to change their internal processes--as well as their media planning, buying, account and creative teams--to better serve clients in this new multi-screen environment. Webcast attendees got to participate in live polling to see how their answers matched up with the results of a new nationwide survey of agency executives on the future of media buying. In this lively panel discussion, our experts shared their thoughts on the value of impressions across the different screens and how the media buying model needs to adapt to the change in media consumption patterns, including ROI on new media. The panel also discussed whether set-top-box data should be used to better target ads to consumers because targeted messages to targeted audiences has been found to have a greater impact on purchase behavior than traditional TV advertising as we saw on our last webcast in August.
