205 - Harnessing Military Brat Lessons In this episode, we talk about Harris Faulkner's book Nine Rules of Engagement, where she shares life lessons gleaned from growing up in a military family. Faulkner reflects on how military values such as resilience, teamwork, and integrity have shaped her approach to personal success. These principles are not just for soldiers but can be applied to everyday life to achieve success, overcome challenges, and develop inner strength. Trust in Your Potential: Faulkner emphasizes how military life fosters a sense of self-reliance and potential. Boot camp is more than just physical endurance—it's about pushing mental and emotional boundaries to discover your true strength. Building Your Special Forces: Surrounding yourself with trusted individuals—your own "special forces"—is critical for overcoming life's battles. Faulkner encourages finding people who have your back and nurture mutual trust. Overcoming Demons: Faulkner's rule on dealing with personal demons stands out. Whether they are habits or internal struggles, facing them head-on is essential for growth. She shares personal stories about how confronting her own shortcomings led to progress. Takeaways:This episode underlines the importance of personal integrity, readiness, and teamwork. The key to success lies in understanding your mission, staying ready to act, and always maintaining strong personal relationships. Our guest this week is Madelyne Paulk, the Marketing and Communications Manager at Jet It. I recently met Madelyne at an aviation conference, and I was drawn to how genuine, professional, and personable she is. Moments after speaking with her, I immediately knew she would be a great guest to feature on this podcast, and her perspective on diversity and inclusion would be valuable to the audience. Madelyne had some reservations initially because she was new to aviation, which was precisely why her story was important to share with you.Madelyne started her career in aviation with Jet It in 2020 after completing her master's degree program. With little knowledge of the industry, she took a chance and started as a Marketing Intern. Since then, Madelyne has worked her way up to Marketing Manager, where she is able to lead and guide marketing efforts to build brand awareness. Passionate about service and DE&I, Madelyne volunteers with the RedTail Flight Academy helping them plan their inaugural graduation ceremony and consulting on their marketing efforts. Outside of aviation, she also sits on the Lowcountry Advisory Board for Multiplying Good, a national nonprofit focused on elevating public service and empowering the next generation of servant leaders.

Chris's mom, Yun Cha, and dad met at the grocery shop that she and her sister owned nearby to the US military base. After years of moving base to base in the US and Europe, Yun Cha still in her twenties, moved back to the United States with her family where she was trying to immerse herself into the American culture. After time, trying to hold onto both cultures simultaneously, speaking Korean at home and English outside the home, inevitably proved impossible. Yun Cha selflessly gave up speaking her native tongue to her children to help them assimilate back into their American culture.Chris says "my mom was a great dreamer and she dreamed of such wonderful things. If you do what you want, you'll never work a day in your life." Chris says that was great until he wanted to work in the theatre industry. Suddenly mom was championing for her son to be a doctor or lawyer and not the theatre rat that Chris wanted to be.While living overseas, Chris and his older sister were immersed in the local culture regardless of what country they were living. That was one of many benefits of the American schools on the base. All the children were introduced to the history, arts and entertainment of the surrounding area. They were exposed to so much more than their school books.Eventually Chris's mother did go back to visit her remaining family in Korea. It was then that Yun Cha was able to get a recovered photograph of her mom, something that she longed for for many years. It brought her great comfort to finally see the photo of her mom again.Chris's theatrical work, slightly on pause because of the pandemic: "Odd Lot "Improv Company and "Savannah Shakers" Shakespeare Theatre Company Podcast: "The Most Haunted City on Earth" -the telling of ghosts stories around Savannah. On this episode of the Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Kevin Miller - Coder Conversations We talk about the following Being a Military Brat His journey from working a low paying hotel job to a career in tech Junior developers who struggle to find their first paid position Social media Advice for non tech founders Kevin's Bio Kevin is from a small town called killeen, Texa by the military base Fort Hood. Kevin lived there most of my life. Kevin found an interest in art and programming through the desire to make video games. Videogames were his first true hobby Kevin focused more on art throughout high school after dabbling with programming because he felt it was too difficult. Kevin eventually decided to shift over to finance because of the promise of big dollars and decided to get a degree in accounting because the local university didn't have a finance degree However, he hated accounting and didn't feel competent. Kevin started working at a hotel in the meanwhile. He then taught himself programming at the hotel while working the night shift. He then took a year off of work to focus on programming full time. Kevin eventually got a job in the industry after tons of applications. Don't quit there's a lot of challenges but if you stick with it, keep analyzing keep adjusting. You're eventually going to get where you need to go. The race goes to those who endure.

Imagine giving birth to a new baby at 21 years old and then being diagnosed with a brain tumor. What now? This is where support comes in. This is when Military Leaders are supposed to be at their best for you. This support is what we call "Taking care of your people". Anything less than that is what we call "Piss poor Leadership". Shaton Evans, Master Sergeant in the US Air Force, wife, and mother of 3, shares her story of defying naysayers and overcoming adversity. As a Military Brat, and wanting to follow in her father's footsteps, she had the desire to serve her country. However, as a young Airman and new mother, an unfortunate diagnosis threatened it all. When they told her she couldn't, that she wouldn't or shouldn't… she did. Although Shaton struggled with illness and multiple injuries, she persevered and proved that she belonged. She found her passion in leading and mentoring individuals from all walks of life; ensuring that they never had to deal with what she encountered. The term "military brat" is a badge of pride worn by generations of kids who traveled the world with their parents, moving into adulthood with the knowledge that they have the strength to handle anything. Military children deal with separations, deployments, frequent moves and even their parents' injuries as part of the life they were born into or entered with their families. Join us this week on The Scuttlebutt as we talk with two military brats (1 veteran and 1 non-veteran) about their early childhood and how they coped with life in the military. You can also read more about military families at USO.org and Army.mil. She transitioned out of active duty through the Palace Chase program to the Reserves. She then transitioned from the Reserves to a civilian working full time with the Reserve unit as an Air Reserve Technician. She worked in Health Services Management while in the Air Force. She transitioning from Active Duty to Reserve (Palace Chase program) then ultimately Reserve to the civilian sector. The Palace Chase program allows you to leave active duty and double your active duty service commitment and complete it through the Reserves. She and her boyfriend were separated and she didn’t like where she was living so she was able to use Palace Chase to move to Arizona. First, Davis-Mothan and then Luke AFB. One of the programs she used when she was in was being an Air Reserves Technician (ART), which allowed her to work full time in the Reserves unit as a civilian and also drill. She eventually married her boyfriend and became a military spouse, Reserves service member and worked full time. A few years later when it was time to move to the next base she decided to step away from being in the Reserves. She was pregnant with her second child and decided that starting over at a new assignment would be easier without the responsibility of being in the Reserves. She talked about how serving in the Reserves was a good transition out of the military for her. It wasn’t as dramatic as leaving straight from active duty. She was ready to leave when it was time to move. She also talked about how she was able to find a remote job and move it with her at her next assignment and how much easier it was to be a military spouse with that flexibility.Connect with Cassie:https://www.linkedin.com/in/cassandralmartin/Related Episodes:Giving Back After Serving - Episode 56From Military Spouse to Military Officer - Episode 17Transitioning from the National Guard Isn't the Same - Episode 59
This episode is part 1 of 2 and features a very special guest: my son Benjamin. On this episode of Constant Elevation, we talk about how he feels about staying home from school due to COVID-19, the pros and cons of constantly moving, and how he tries to make the best out of being so far away from family. Being a military brat isn’t the easiest life, but I’m glad we can still share a laugh and look forward to our next adventure as an ohana.
This episode is part 2 of 2 and features a self-nominated candidate for the best child in this family: my daughter Lana. In this episode, we talk about what she misses during COVID-19 social distancing, how moving so often gets even harder as a high school student within a military family, and the different nerd adventures we’ve experienced together. She’s a positive example of a military brat and a very creative artist that I should probably have on the show more often.
In this edition of the OP Diaries, I am joined by Omar Sohail, son of the former Pakistan Chief of Air Staff Aman Sohail. Omar gives us an insight into the parallels between civilian life and being an military brat and gives us an insider track into the mindset of a man who commanded so much influence for a number of years, his father. He talks us through the rather unsettled lifestyle one leads as the son of an armed forces officer. We also discuss the privileges afforded to members of the armed forces, the abuse of power, the enormous spending and influence, and the public perception. Lastly, Omar details how after all the places he has lived in due to the nature of his fathers’ job, he has found his ‘real’ home in Scotland where he now resides with his wife.

In this episode I speak with Army Veteran Sundance Miller, and her daughter Porsche, about what its like to heal yourself from your military trauma and how to help your child along the way. This is an important topic for me as I am also a military brat and i want there to be more programs out there to help military children find their way through their parents trauma. PTSD and other illnesses, do not just effect the person, it effects the entire family. Sundance and Porsche use yoga, horses, and a close relationship to make their way through their trauma and their life. Make sure if you are in Lincoln, Nebraska you check out some of Sundance's Yoga classes, and I know we will be seeing some amazing things coming from Porsche. As always thank you to http://iryinsideout.com for being our sponsor and supporting this podcast. On this episode I get pretty personal and discuss my apprehensions about bring children into this military life. Yes, I am probably overthinking this but my husband and I are going to try to have kids soon and their childhoods will look a lot different than either of ours since they will be kids of an active duty service member. My kids probably won’t be around their grandparents and cousins as much as I was growing up, there dad will be gone for extended periods of time, they will move towns and school fairly frequently at least compared to my own childhood when I didn’t move at all! I think my biggest apprehensions comes because they will grow up in a totally different way than I did. I only know my own childhood perspective and theirs will be so much different. I know that I will be the stable factor in their lives and that is a lot of pressure on me to stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy while taking care of dogs, home, businesses. All while my husband is away. Listen to me talk through it all on today's show. Podcast Info:Instagram @hurryupandwait_Blog: Hurry Up and Wait Podcast
088 Virginia Is For Druggies w/ Steven Belkowski Joining me on this episode is Steven Belkowski (@belswagski), a comic I met in the open mic scene in LA who is a traveler both physically and psychedelically. We talked about his experience as a military brat growing up in Indonesia as a right wing Catholic lad, similar to the Covington kids! He would have definitely rocked the MAGA hat to town some libs back in his day. However, moving to Virginia changed all that and once he saw how people struggled his heart began to grow like the Grinch, and he turned to the psychedelic realm to open his mind. Born into a military family, Harris Faulkner revered her father, a decorated career officer who served three tours of duty in Vietnam and raised his children with the values and ideals of the U.S. military. Accompanying him from posting to posting, young Harris experienced firsthand how success in life was rooted in the knowledge, integrity, and leadership that came from her military surroundings. Indeed, these formative lessons in leadership and work ethic became the guiding principles for her career as a journalist, lessons she credits with her rise to become one of the top hosts on Fox News. In 9 Rules of Engagement, she shares the advice, wisdom, and tools that she absorbed through her military upbringing, examining how these ideals have shaped her professional and personal outlook and how everyone can incorporate them into their own lives. Using her father’s career as the backdrop to her experience, Faulkner explores the lessons in courage, duty, patriotism, and responsibility that helped her succeed, demonstrating the truth to the axiom that in military families everyone serves – together. Along the way she also interviews current and former military families, generals and other officers, and tells stories from her father’s career to illuminate how and why the message and mission of the military is so effective at changing lives both on and off the battlefield. Harris Faulkner anchors her daytime show, Outnumbered Overtime with Harris Faulkner, in addition to cohosting the talk show Outnumbered. In 2017, she moderated the Women’s Inaugural Breakfast, a bipartisan inauguration event in Washington, DC. She lives in New York City. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Bethany and Ellie start the show off defining the term “Military Brat” and how many houses Bethany lived in growing up as a child of a military member. They talk about the three bedroom house they called “the dorms”, and when Ellie and her husband bought their first house in New Mexico. Bethany remembers what it was like to live in that house, and then what a dream house would look like for her. Rich Carey joins the conversation discussing the Real Estate business he has developed as a side hustle while also being in the military. Ellie tells Rich about her son looking to buy a home at his next assignment. Rich gives the secret to wether you should buy or sell in the area you live using the 1% Rule, and why it is difficult to do in high cost of living areas. He gives one of the common mistakes military members make when buying houses and exposes the myth of buying a home in each location and still coming out on top of rent. He also talks about the reasons buying overseas can be very difficult, and the most opportune time to buy houses as a military member or civilians. He also gives a specific message to Ellie's son, Jonathan.
Oh the foolish things we do as children...... A flashback to the time I had the bright idea to tip out because I didn't like one of the tasks my father gave me. Silly child.

A conversation with ACe Callwood, co-founder and CEO of Painless1099, about what drives the startup's entrepreneurial team.
I had an interesting just a few weeks ago, met somebody, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, and it was interesting in what he was doing and how he was planning his future. I thought: “Wow, this would be a great example of what other people, as they’re thinking of another career, another job, or expanding their income some other way – they might have some ideas that they could do, too, from it, as well as they might even copy a little bit of what he did.” Let me get to that right away. We are on with Greg Motes. Greg, welcome. Greg: Hi. Thank you. Thomas: Tell me a little bit about what your life was like before you went in the military. I’m not thinking just in economic terms; I’m thinking in terms of you, your personality, etc. Greg: I grew up as a Military Brat. My dad was in the Army. We moved just a few times when I was growing up. I was lucky to be settled throughout most of my grade school and high school, which was fortunate, in the Midwest. From there, I had a typical Military Brat family lifestyle. I have two brothers, and we played sports, and we made our way through schooling. Thomas: Okay, that’s a little different because we don’t have many people who have been in that situation, a Military Brat, but I guess you couldn’t be so much of a brat, but when you get into the military and started out on your own. Did you find the military changed you at all? I ask that because the beginning of the military literally changed my life for the future tremendously. I could not even expound on how much. What about you? Greg: I very much enjoyed coming into the military. I was fortunate that when I came in, I went into the Armor Branch, and from Armor, I was out at Fort Irwin, California. Fort Irwin is a place where, every month, units from around the army would come to train against the opposing forces, and I was on the side of the opposing forces. It was a great environment to be in, because every month we got to go play on tanks and essentially play laser tag at 30 miles an hour across a playing field the size of Rhode Island. We would play four to six games a month. I say games, and obviously they were training, and it was very serious training, but at the same time, there was a mentality and an attitude about going out there and fighting to win and playing to win. I found a comradery that was very similar to what I had in high school, playing football and playing for state championship football teams, and then going into college and playing in intramural sports and things like that. The army, to me, I think at the onset was very much as an extension of that teamwork to be able to go there. Of course, coming in as a Lieutenant, I was put into a leadership role, and I very much enjoyed doing that. I think it was a lot of fun. Thomas: It’s interesting. Today, kids are playing video games; you guys play the real thing, which is really exciting. For all those kids, including myself, when we were younger and played army or cops and robbers, whatever you played, you didn’t have sticks or little plastic guns; you really had some good things to play with. One thing I find very interesting and it’s sometimes hard for people to know, realize, and understand is that word “teamwork.” One thing that really struck me in the military was that my friends came from some wide array of places. It turns out there was one guy whose father was the General Manager of IBM in the West Coast branch, so he had a tremendous life, all kinds of different things. Closer friends to me later on were actually one guy who was from Watts in L.A., another guy who was from the ghetto in Houston, and lots of places like that. What happened is you didn’t realize and know that until later on when you wanted to stay in touch or something, and you would get their information. The reason you didn’t know and understand that is because everybody’s dressed alike. There are no outfits, there are no funny costumes or anything else.
