Fin 1998, à 27 ans Blaise Agresti accède à son rêve en devenant commandant du célèbre PGHM, le peloton de gendarmerie chargé des secours en haute montagne. In this episode, Tom Kizzia takes us into the 1983 shootings in McCarthy that killed six of the town's 22 residents. He focuses on Amy Ashenden, a lesser known victim of the shootings. We continue our conversation with author, Tom Kizzia, discussing his new book titled, Cold Mountain Path: The Ghost Town Decades of McCarthy-Kennecott, Alaska. In his book, Tom preserves the  “Lost Years” of 1938-1983, and creates an opportunity to talk about these stories and how they impact the community. In our interview with Tom about his book, two themes emerged: how we approach and process the past (Part One), and in this episode we tie it together with reflections from Tom on Amy Ashenden's life journey and her discoveries of impermanence.

Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the courageous Paul Pritchard. Paul was a cutting-edge rock climber and mountaineer; having his adventures take him from the Himalayas to Patagonia to the European Alps. In 1997 Paul won the Boardman/Tasker Award for mountain literature for his book ‘Deep Play' in which he spent the prize money on a world climbing tour, finding himself climbing the slender sea stack known as the Totem Pole in Tasmania that is 65 metres high and 4 metres wide. It was at the Totem Pole in 1998, that a laptop sized boulder fell from 25 metres and hit Paul on the head; inflicting such great injuries that doctors thought he would never walk or speak again. Fortunately, he was able to, however he does have hemiplegia; experiencing paralysis on the right side of his body and the brain injury does continue to inform his speech and memory. Though Paul is now disabled, Paul is passionate about insisting that this does not mean he is unable; having since the accident climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, rode a trike through Tibet to Mount Everest, in 2016 climbed the infamous Totem Pole, 18 years after his accident, and most recently cycled through deserts and mountains for a distance of  2152km in the ‘Lowest to Highest Expedition' in Australia.What I personally love about this podcast is Paul's tenacity in continuing to live a courageous and adventurous life post-accident. He shares deep wisdom about the power of the now, the power of absolute presence, and the power of true acceptance; which he so astutely shares does not mean resignation. I will highlight that Paul does have a brain injury, as he humoursely states, ‘he is missing half his brain and most of it is plastic'; so in saying this, I have edited this podcast with Paul's encouragement to cut out pauses that he may be using to gather his thoughts as his brain does work at 50% capacity. I have left a couple of authentic and vulnerable moments in there on purpose, for us to truly connect with some of Paul's challenges when it comes to his daily life; and what really impresses me is despite these challenges in this form of communication, Paul continues to write award-winning books, with his most recent book ‘The Mountain Path' taking him 6 years to complete; typing each key with one finger ever so considered. Aujourd’hui, j’ai le plaisir d’accueillir sur le Gratin Blaise Agresti. Si vous souhaitez le retrouver, n’hésitez pas à lui faire un petit coucou sur Linkedin. Je suis sûre qu’il sera ravi Blaise a vraiment un parcours exceptionnel qui fera sens à tous ceux qui veulent se reconvertir. Passionné par les montagnes, Blaise est diplômé de l’école militaire de Saint-Cyr mais aussi de l’école des officiers de la gendarmerie nationale en passant par le Centre national du ski et d’alpinisme. Après 23 ans passés dans la gendarmerie, Blaise a fait un virage à 360° pour reprendre une formation en école de commerce. Il est ensuite devenu directeur commercial international de l’entreprise Petzl pendant deux ans, avant de se lancer en 2017 dans la création de Mountain Path, une école de management d’altitude. Il met aujourd’hui ses compétences de guide/sauveteur au service des entreprises (Airbus, EDF..) et donne également des cours dans différentes universités. Ji Hyang believes that we are hungry for a direct experience of the sacred in this culture. We try to fill the void with technology, and its “quick fix” of images and information. This leaves us hungry for true connectivity. We don't need more information. We need more appreciation. Gratitude opens the heart, and gives our life meaning; it becomes a form of spiritual experience that gives us strength. Field of Blessings explores how meaning-making can be approached by deep examination of the stories of our lives, which bridge the gap between the inner world and the outer world, giving shape to our experience. How can these narratives be spoken, written, or embodied? Ritual is the story brought-to-life, and a powerful vehicle for spiritual transformation, for reconnecting people with an embodied wholeness. Ji Hyang Padma shows that Chöd, Medicine Buddha practices, and other Tibetan rituals are used by healers to evoke sacred energies, radical empathy, and to contact deep archetypal realms of the psyche. Ji Hyang Padma is currently a CPE Chaplain Resident at the University of San Francisco Medical Center, and combines an academic and professional career with her role as a Zen teacher. Ji Hyang has done intensive Zen training and teaching in Asia and North America for 20 years, 15 of these as an ordained nun. She has completed several 90-day intensive retreats in Korea and North America. She also teaches Zen workshops annually at Omega Institute and Esalen Institute. While her practice has been situated within the Korean Zen tradition, she has had the benefit of studying with teachers across a wide spectrum of Buddhist lineages. Ji Hyang has also served as Director of Spirituality and Education Programs at Wellesley College, and Director and Abbot of Cambridge Zen Center, one of the largest Zen Centers in the country. Additionally, she has served as a meditation teacher at Wellesley College, Harvard University and Boston University. She is gifted at finding an entry-point into practice for people who are just beginning their journey. She is also the author of Living the Season: Zen Practice for Transformative Times.
