Have you ever felt stuck in a negative relationship cycle?   Have you ever struggled with setting boundaries in your relationships? Today, Jay welcomes back a community favorite, the renowned psychotherapist, bestselling author, and podcast host Lori Gottlieb, for an insightful chat about love, relationships, and emotional growth. Lori, best known for her book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and as co-host of the popular Dear Therapists podcast, brings her deep wisdom and practical advice that really hits home with listeners. Lori shares how people often step into love with unrealistic expectations, thanks to social media and pop culture. She reminds us that while the spark of initial chemistry is thrilling, true, long-lasting love thrives on a deeper connection and genuine understanding. One of the highlights is Lori's take on “idiot compassion” versus “wise compassion.” She breaks down how real compassion means looking at ourselves honestly, recognizing our patterns, and owning our part in the relationship. This is essential for anyone feeling trapped in negative cycles. As the conversation unfolds, Jay and Lori dive into family dynamics, especially around in-laws and blending families. Lori offers practical tips on how to support your relationship while still showing respect for parents, pointing out that these challenges are usually a couple's issues, not just external ones. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Let Go of Unrealistic Expectations How to Practice Wise Compassion How to Break Negative Patterns How to Handle Pressure to Rush Relationships How to Prioritize Clear Communication How to Avoid Pop Culture Relationship Pitfalls How to Cultivate Emotional Resilience Remember, true connection flourishes when we commit to growth, communicate openly, and remain empathetic to both ourselves and others. Every step taken toward understanding and compassion brings you closer to creating a life filled with genuine, lasting connections. In this episode, I want to do a dive into what you should know before buying a book on anxiety support or treatment. Depending on how and where you get that book, there could be a certain amount of misrepresentation.    The topics in this episode include Private Label Release/White Label books, personal narratives and self-help/support and workbooks. One of my goals for 2025 is find current books that help specific populations.    The music for this week's show is from Logan at www.musicformakers.com. I mispronounced the name of the website and had to take it out.   Wee bit of housekeeping.    I am a real person. This is a 95% human generated podcast. I do use search engines. Many of them now have embed AI features. I write my own scripts and use an image editor that to my knowledge, doesn't use AI (yet). I use a company called Auphonic that does have AI sound cleaning features.    Long time listeners know I need all the help I can get in regard to sound quality.   I need to say all of that because there is now technology that an AI generated audio show hosted by two non-human AI voices. That podcast can be created and uploaded in about 20ish minutes.    There are humans that subscribe to that service. Mainly for income generation. More podcasts, more access to advertiser money.    For those of you new here, I do not accept ads, affiliate deals or influencer perks. I don't do interviews for free or for profit. Not saying I'll never do it but I haven't in 8 years so yeah, that is a thing.   If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741.   Resources Mentioned:  Descriptive Personal Narrative Resource: Scott Stossel's My Age of Anxiety Self Help, Support & Workbooks:  You Will Get Through This: A Mental Health Tool Kit―Help for Depression, Anxiety, Grief, and More by Julie Radico PsyD, Charity O'Reilly LPC, Nicole Helverson PsyD Combo Personal Narrative & Self-Help/Support:  From Stuck to Unstuck: Break Free from the OCD & Anxiety Loop Using the Triple-A Response® and Take Back Control of Your Life by Matthew Codde LCSW. A talk with Scott Stossel, author of "My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind." Scott is also national editor of The Atlantic. Scott's book is a history of the condition and treatment of anxiety, and also a personal history in which Scott talks honestly about his struggles with debilitating anxiety. I talk to Scott about what he's learned in his research and personal life about the factors behind anxiety and how we might, as much as we are able to, overcome it. We also talk about some fairly unexamined nuances about anxiety: for example, how the word can contain a multitude of very different experiences. I also talk about my own anxiety, which has been quite severe.Support the showTo get ad-free episodes, and more, get a premium subscription. To learn more about the show, go to behavior-podcast.com. So I started connecting to what sounds and feels good to me,” admits Ajaye. ”Growing Up is an ode to my younger self. To the 20 something me who felt lost, was always chasing after the wrong kind of romance, and tried so hard to fit in to try to make everybody else happy.” Songs included in this episode: 1) "Growing Up" - performed by Ajaye Jardine 2) "When You're My Age" - performed by Lori McKenna featuring Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose 3) "Glorious Disaster" performed by Ajaye

Susannah Cahalan tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith in her, and the lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. Her New York Times bestselling book “Brain on Fire” was adapted for a movie starring Chloe Grace Moretz as her. It’s an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance.    She was a healthy young person working at her dream job, The New York Post when she began having grand mal seizures and babbling. Her increasing paranoia and seizures were misdiagnosed by a neurologist as partying too hard combined with stress. Eventually, she’d become catatonic, trapped in her body unable to speak, write, or get thoughts out.    Susannah was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder with video of her in the hospital heartbreakingly capturing her real panic as she hallucinates she’s on the news while using the remote to try to call for help. After many misdiagnoses and on the verge of being “locked up” in a psych ward, a miracle doctor, Dr. Najjar comes along and asks her to draw a clock. The lopsided image opened up clues leading to a brain biopsy and spinal tap, she’s diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis, a medical explanation pretending to be psychiatric.    Her personal experience leads her deeper into the study of other “Great Pretenders,” the same name as her second New York Times best-selling book. She’d blow the lid on a groundbreaking 1973 study called “On Being Sane in Insane Places” that rocked the psychiatric world and still does. On this episode, after a little unexpected pandemic hiatus, I'm finally back again! And this time it's with a bonus episode featuring something that's a bit off the beaten path for my usual fare: a personal story-time episode of sorts! So, please join me as I fully recount the detailed story about how I got into Doctor Who in the first place -- way back in the dark ages of the 80s as a young geeky teenager! Given that my story has a lot of baby-queer-feels running throughout, I just thought that Pride month would be a great time to finally take the time to get the whole story recorded on my podcast – even though as I'm publishing this, admittedly I'm a few days late after Pride Month ended, all due to some technical issues. Oops! #mercuryretrogradewoes Anyway, grab some popcorn or other snacks and roll up for a big ol' nostalgia trip! Oh, and also please be sure to also stick around for the other stuff on the episode too! There's some administrative chat about the State of the Podcast (and your podcaster) at the beginning before the story, as well as some admittedly pretty disappointed feels about Series 12 afterward (which I kept thankfully short – as to not be too much of a squee-killer). There's also even a little un-cut audio squeeful mini-review bonus (that I did for the 'Discussing Who' podcast) for you to enjoy for some further funsies! All leaving a pretty interesting sandwich of content! And yeah, it's admittedly bit of an emotional roller coaster at times, with the highs of squees and the lows of discontent to navigate, but hopefully you'll all still enjoy it nonetheless! Strap in, it might be a bumpy ride! P.S. Also, there's a poll! I love a poll! One of Nashville’s most beloved singer/songwriters, Grammy-winner Lori McKenna joins us from her home just outside Boston to talk about her brand-new album, The Balladeer, due out July 24. The first song from the project, “When You’re My Age,” featuring her frequent co-writers Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose, is a love letter from parents to their kids as they grow up and move forward with their own lives. Grab your tissues for this one. We discuss the stories behind several of the songs on her album including a tribute to her sister, “Marie,” and “The Dream”, which was inspired by storyline from the hit NBC show This Is Us. We talk about Lori's approach to songwriting, her friendship with Hillary and Liz, and she shares with us where she goes to find inspiration when she feels stuck creatively. Lori’s songs “Girl Crush” (Little Big Town) and “Humble and Kind” (Tim McGraw) were decade-defining songs in country music, and she continues to pen new songs with Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Sara Bareilles. We also talk with Lori about her experience writing songs for Lady Gaga’s A Star Is Born, and what it was like holding Oprah’s hand while Faith Hill sang a gospel song on The Oprah Winfrey Show. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this episode, we spend 40 minutes with one of the world’s most influential directors. Peter Brook has directed John Gielgud, Glenda Jackson, Ben Kingsley, Adrian Lester, Laurence Olivier, Paul Scofield, and Patrick Stewart. His 1970 "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" is that among the play’s most lauded and best known productions. His 1968 book "The Empty Space," now an e-book from Nick Hern Books, is a classic of theater writing. Brook’s work is characterized by the search for new theatrical modes and artistic languages, and at 94, he continues searching. His newest work, "Why?", co-written and co-directed by longtime collaborator Marie-Hélène Estienne, opened in Paris in June, finished a run at Brooklyn’s Theatre for a New Audience in October, and will soon begin a tour of China, Italy, and Spain. A new book, "Playing by Ear: Reflections on Sound and Music," is also being published this year. At a time when we bring so much of ourselves to work, mental health is still something we don’t like talking about at the office. But so many high-achieving people have suffered — or are currently suffering — from anxiety, depression, or other mental and emotional issues. Our guest, Scott Stossel, national editor of the Atlantic and author of “My Age of Anxiety,” explains where anxiety comes from and how it affects us in our work — for better or worse. We look at why it is so important to align mental health and leadership, and to better understand how anxiety impacts our working lives.

When it comes to benzo withdrawal, all roads lead to anxiety. Anxiety is not only the most persistent and pervasive symptom of withdrawal, but it's also the catalyst which makes all the others worse. In today's episode, we learn about this mysterious emotional juggernaut called anxiety. What is it? What causes it? Why is it worse in withdrawal? And most of all, what can be done to help ease it? We also have two benzo stories, several news items, and a welcome message to the caregiver. Welcome to Episode #9 I today's episode, we tackle anxiety. The biggest and most complicated of all benzo symptoms. This is the first in our "symptoms" series which will continue periodically over the next several months. We'll also share two benzo stories, try to answer a question about supplements, and cover a variety of news stories including Dr. Frances' article, ER visits for benzos, and examine what happens to people dependent on benzos when a government cracks down on their use. But first, let's list the resources used in this episode, and then we'll dive deeper into the content of episode 9. Their common brand names include Ambien, Ativan, Klonopin, Lunesta, Valium, and Xanax. Introduction In today's intro, we opened with the quote from Kierkegaard, which I've reprinted below: And no Grand Inquisitor has in readiness such terrible tortures as has anxiety, and no spy knows to attack more artfully, ...choosing the instant when you are weakest, nor knows how to lay traps where you will be caught and ensnared, as anxiety knows how, and no sharp-witted judge knows how to interrogate, to examine you as anxiety does, which never lets you escape, …neither at work nor at play, neither by day nor by night.— Soren Kierkegaard, "The Concept of Dread," 1844 I followed that up with my pleasant surprise at the increase in likes of the Benzo Free Facebook page and how rapidly it has been increasing. And then I jumped into a welcome message for the caregiver. I wanted to let all of the listeners know that this podcast was as much for them as it was for the patient, and to share a geniune thank you for all they do. We also have some interviews coming and I'll start the first one this weekend. And I closed by mentioning that this episode will probably run a little long, which it did. Mailbag This is where we share questions and comments which were discussed: Did you use any nutritional supplements during your taper and withdrawal? This question was submitted by Jill. I don't have a clear answer for this one since I cannot recommend medication nor supplements nor give such advice. It is often said that to name something is to understand it.  If that’s true, than Scott Stossel has a greater understanding of anxiety than anyone else.  In his book, My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind, he takes us through the litany of his multiple anxieties and treatments.  In so doing, we come away with a far greater understanding of and sympathy for the anxieties, that for Scott and many others, (far more than we know) plaque everyday life.In a more connected, complex, speeded up world, are these individual anxieties worse, and do they in fact create a kind of feedback loop into our collective and societal anxiety?  A society in which we have the unique ability to turn even good news, into something to worry about. My conversation with Scott Stossel:

Well, we've done it. We've finally produced a mega-episode. And what better topic to go all epic on you than the outsized at the University of Minnesota Libraries? Our guest this episode is Tim Johnson, Curator of Special Collections and Rare Books & E. W. McDiarmid Curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Tim gives us a nice history of the  and the beginnings of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the university, which was made possible through a number of personal relationships. It includes the additions from the collections of James Iraldi, Philip Hench, Edith Meiser, John Bennett Shaw and Allen Mackler that have contributed to the basis of the vast and varied items that number more than 60,000. We discuss much about the collections, including the challenge for a curator of books / librarian when it comes to looking after objects that go far beyond the printed page, as well as the changing nature of donor relations with respect to special collections. But we would have been remiss if we didn't spend time on John Bennett Shaw, BSI ("The Hans Sloane of My Age"), who was affectionately known as The Grand Acquisitor and who had all of the collecting discernment of a vacuum cleaner. Tim opines on what's next for collectors and the Collections alike, and gives us a hint as to what to expect as far out as 2016. If you're a researcher or just a curious Sherlockian, there is much available to you, either on a visit to the library or to their site online. Scott shares a tale of collecting woe - a long sought-after treasure disappears in the blink of an eye. What's a collector to do? Claudia Hammond reports on a mental health triage scheme being run by Leicestershire police force, which has led to a decrease in the number of people with mental illness being detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. Praising children with low self-esteem may seem like a good way to boost their confidence, but a new study by psychologist Eddie Brummelman of Utrecht University suggests that this can backfire and make them less likely to take on new challenges. Scott Stossel describes himself as "a twitchy bundle of phobias, fears and neuroses". He has a fear of heights, flying, public speaking and vomiting and nearly couldn't attend his own wedding. In his new book "My Age of Anxiety" he describes how until thirty-five years ago, anxiety did not exist as a diagnostic category, yet all through history descriptions have existed and each age thinks they are uniquely anxious. Scott explores the theories surrounding anxiety, including the potentially positive sides of the condition.

While our show normally allows us to inform our listeners about the Sherlockian world (and occasionally share gossipy tidbits and commentary), it is always a joy when we have the opportunity to welcome a guest to interview. This occasion was no exception, as we were fortunate enough to be joined by Brad Keefauver, BSI ("Winwood Reade") from . Brad fashions himself , but he certainly held his own on our program, as he discussed his first meeting with Sherlock Holmes, noting that it was far from typical. It was theatrical in nature, but you'll have to listen to hear the exact work that captured Brad's attention. We were then off and running into the sci-fi world of Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein and others, with Brad openly admitting his Trekkie origins (not that there's anything wrong with that). A class trip to Chicago brought him in touch with  and helped him realize that there was a world beyond the pastiches and films that he was most familiar with. Noted Irregular hermit Bob Burr ("The Rascally Lascar") was an mentor of sorts, and it was his editing and clockwork-like work ethic that led to some of Brad's early written contributions, such as  and . Other giants like John Bennett Shaw, BSI ("The Hans Sloane of My Age") and his legendary symposiums in the 1980s also led Brad to Irregular life. There is so much more that we could say about Brad, as he is a veritable Sherlockian onion. We'll let the show speak for itself. The show also covers a number of relevant news items and places for your attention; you'll find them all in the links section below. As always, we closed with a reading of the Editor's Gas-Lamp, this time selecting "One Advocating Sherlock Holmes" from the March 1987 issue (Vol. 37, No. 1). While the topic and some of the pronouncements may be controversial, we like to think that we found some common ground in it.
