This month we return to the Palau de les Arts and their Centre de Perfeccionament, where the young Soprano Iria Goti finds her feet in a brand new production of Cendrillon. We discover how she reacts when self-criticism and nerves take hold during a performance. Meanwhile, alumna of the programme soprano Angel Blue gives us an insight into her relationship with comparison and competition, and shares how performances can be affected by something much more serious than the stress of day-to-day life events. Angel Blue, a Song of Redemption, begins with a child's battle with real-life monsters. The kind of monsters that fester in the deepest darkest alleyways of the human mind. We all know they exist, but few dare to speak the truth about them until now.Forrest's life spins into an unpredictable journey toward love and desire for recovery. A true-life story with confessions, realizations, a continuous battle with relapse, sexual abuse, suicidal tendencies, and the will to live. A story that plays out every day all over the world. This book is a beautiful symphony orchestrated to serve others to understand that it's time victims and survivors speak up.Angel Blue ends with your heart racing, your mind turning, and the absolute need to know if this beautiful soul will choose to love life and help himself? Will he succumb to his desire for recovery and healing? Will he change his subconscious desire for a slow death to numb the pain of the memories in his mind? A page-turner until the very end.Support the show

Verdi's masterpiece returns to Seattle Opera May 2023. Initially this sumptuous, tuneful, utterly human tragedy sparked controversy, but it quickly became one of the world's most beloved operas. Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean introduces La traviata, with musical examples from previous Seattle Opera productions including 1996 (conducted by Gerard Schwarz and starring Gordon Hawkins and Lauren Flanigan), 2009 (conducted by Brian Garman and starring Francesco Demuro and Eglise Guttierez), and 2016 (conducted by Stefano Ranzani and starring Angel Blue).
September 27 will be an historic night for opera lovers: the Metropolitan Opera, the largest performing arts company in the nation, will open its season after the long pandemic shut-down with “Fire Shut Up in My Bones.” Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts since its development period, “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” is based on the memoir by Charles Blow. It's composed by jazz great Terence Blanchard with a libretto by Kasi Lemmons, and it is the first opera by a Black composer to be performed at the Metropolitan Opera. Angel Blue will be starring along with baritone Will Liverman. It's the second time Angel Blue has opened the season for the Metropolitan Opera: in 2019, she was Bess in the Grammy-winning production of “Porgy and Bess”—a role in which she shone. But shining on stage is what Blue does as a singer and as an actress. For the past decade and a half, Blue has performed to great acclaim in opera houses around the world and in a variety of roles. Now, she has emerged as one of the most vibrant sopranos performing today. Her voice has been praised for its “shimmering beauty” that is “always perfectly controlled and consistent throughout her expansive range.” In this podcast, Angel Blue and I talk about opera and its joys, “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” her career in Europe, her first-time performing at the Met, and her thoughts about DEI and opera. Jane caught a spare moment with Angel upon her arrival in Santa Fe to learn more about who she is on stage, off stage, and in the practice room. Produced and directed by filmmaker Bill Morrison, "let me come in" features a new song by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang performed by soprano Angel Blue, one of opera's brightest stars. The short film incorporates rediscovered (and heavily damaged) footage from the lost 1928 silent film Pawns of Passion to astonishing effect. Filmmaker Bill Morrison, director of the highly acclaimed films Decasia and Dawson City: Frozen Time, has long been fascinated with ancient, decayed nitrate film stock from long-forgotten films—what he describes as "goopy, sticky films deemed not worth saving." For "let me come in," he has resurrected footage from what may be the last surviving reels of the 1928 German silent romance Pawns of Passion, discovered in a Pennsylvania barn in 2012. After decades of expanding in hot summers and contracting in freezing winters, the deteriorated nitrate film stock now reveals, in Morrison's words, "imagery that seems to be pulled from a state of semi-consciousness, asleep but dreaming.” Morrison describes Lang's song as "a rumination on love and the borderline separating two souls, seemingly from the precipice of consciousness. When I heard Angel Blue's incredible interpretation, my mind immediately recalled the ambiguous tension in this scene from Pawns of Passion. Left to rot in a barn, and then scanned and archived again for another eight years on my own personal hard drive, it has found a new life through David's words and music, and Angel Blue's voice. It was very exciting to see how quickly it came together and how perfectly the image, words and sound meshed.” Director Bill Morrison joins us for conversation on his inspired interpretation of hauntingly beautiful film fragments. "let me come in" will receive its broadcast premiere as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival on May 7.
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor have a brief, lovely chat with filmmaker Bill Morrison, who blew many cinephiles away with Dawson City: Frozen Time a few years back. We were lucky enough to speak with him then about the film and its inception. This time around, Morrison has a short film called let me come in, which is having its world broadcast premiere as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival on May 7th. let me come in re-purposes footage from the lost 1928 silent film Pawns of Passion with the entrancing touch that only Morrison can employ, accompanied by a new song by composer David Lang and performed by soprano Angel Blue. We discuss the new film with Morrison, the negative review Pawns of Passion actually got from The New York Times back in 1929 (!), and his upcoming film The Village Detective: A Song Cycle, which just recently premiered at the Moscow International Film Festival. While some of this talk is sometimes tough to hear, it is a necessary discussion for everyone to listen. While Forrest's life has had its hardships and heartache, hearing Forrest talk about surviving the abuse in his life was incredibly motivating for me. This was an emotional talk that will benefit us all!During this talk, we covered his upbringing with an abusive step-father, being molested by his foster mother, being homeless, his addiction, the death of his friend, military service, tattooing, and his never-ending quest to get his book, Angel Blue published!#speartalk #forrestlang #veteranFollow @silverspearsecurity for all things Silver Spear Security, LLC. Multi award-winning soprano Angel Blue is known for the beautiful timbre of her voice and her captivating stage presence. Gracing many of the world's most prestigious stages over the last years, Angel is becoming an icon of her generation. The daughter of a pastor, she grew up in California listening to both gospel and opera and was determined from a young age to make it as an opera singer. To support her training, Angel performed in beauty pageants winning Miss Hollywood among other titles, and learned valuable lessons in self-worth along the way. After a devastating tour of auditions led to one rejection after another, in despair she turned to her mother and her faith for support, which enabled her to turn a corner at a crucial moment in her career. With determination she built on success after success, not only singing at the highest level but presenting concerts and competitions many of us know and love such as the BBC Proms and Cardiff Singer of The World, alongside founding her own YouTube channel, and last week she accepted the Grammy for the best Opera Recording for Porgy & Bess at the Metropolitan Opera.
Forrest Lang has an unbelievable life story. He has gone through and faced just about every type of trauma a child and young adult could experience. All the trauma he faced lead him to finally finding peace and has taught him a lot along the way. He had written a book about his life called Angel Blue that is soon to be published. This episode will be tough to hear as he shares what he experienced. I must warn you, some of these experiences are horrific, but on the other side of these events is a man that has discovered who he is and now leads of life of complete purpose. https://www.forrestlang.com/ https://instagram.com/angelbluebook?igshid=1of3ef4rbfofl https://linktr.ee/Daduptribe

Before HearTOGETHER was a podcast, it was a live event! On August 28, 2020, The Philadelphia Orchestra marked Women’s Equality Day and the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, with a discussion moderated by First Associate Concertmaster Juliette Kang and featuring soprano Angel Blue, and composer Jennifer Higdon. In addition to recognizing the achievements—and failures—of the early suffrage movement, the discussion focused on the panelists' lived experiences as women artists at the top of their field.
Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean leads a tour through the land of soprano, from dazzling coloratura acrobats to fearsome goddesses whose roar sets the opera house aflame. This week, Aria Code producer Merrin Lazyan talks to soprano Angel Blue, who recently performed the role of Bess at the Met's production of Porgy and Bess to stellar reviews and is now, like most of us, hunkered down at home. Blue gives insights into how she approaches her roles and talks about the upside of not being able to perform during the current crisis, as well as her Faithful Friday sessions. We kick off Season 3 with news from Andy O'Brien (AFL-CIO) about a unionization push in the Maine logging industry and we talk with indie professional wrestler Angel Blue. We talk about how Angel first got into wrestling when she was still in high school, all the work and the physical and mental stress that goes into being a professional wrestler, and what it’s like when you walk through the curtain before a match... And we talk about how Angel has seen and been a part of the explosion of kick-ass women wrestlers in the past two decades. We also talk about the neck injury Angel suffered in the ring earlier this year and the incredibly tough road she has traveled since it happened, including struggling with doctors who treat her like shit because she needs a surgery she can’t afford (please consider donating to Angel's GoFundMe fundraiser to help her pay her medical bills).
