If you're a long-time Derringer Discoveries listener, you'll recall that In Episode 19, we weighed in on The Beatles' 10 Worst Songs. In response to that episode, Sammy Vulcano, a solo recording artist from the Syracuse, New York (US) area, reached out to Team Derringer. Sammy shared that he is a superfan of The Beatles. He told Team Derringer that he had recently combined his songwriting talents with those of his lifelong friend and fellow musician, Anthony Micaroni, to write, record, and release a trilogy of songs about The Beatles from 1962 to 1965. Intrigued by this concept, Team Derringer decided to explore the collaboration between Sammy and Anthony and invited them to join Team Derringer (Laura, Paul, Alton, and Dave) as they delve into this period of The Beatles' legacy -- a time that is often overshadowed by the brilliance of The Beatles' catalog released after 1965. Assisted by special guests Sammy and Anthony, Team Derringer shares the tale of The Beatles in Hamburg 1962, along with snippets of their biggest hits from 1962 to 1965.  The Beatles had just one hit in 1962 and it was only in the UK. They didn't conquer the US until January 1964, but by 1965, they were dominating the music charts worldwide. Join Team Derringer and their guests as they discover obscure, interesting trivia about The Beatles. Along the way, you'll hear snippets of The Beatles' two hit singles sung with German lyrics. Additionally, Team Derringer, Sammy, and Anthony will discuss Kurt Cobain's posthumous hit single, a cover of Sammy's favorite 1963 song by The Beatles.  Kurt's cover has streamed almost 59 million times! And of course, Team Derringer will play snippets of the trilogy of songs by Sammy and Anthony that sparked the idea for this episode. On the occasion of this years' Independent Art fair in New York im speaking with Jessica Stoller. She is an artist working in an elaborate way with clay. She mines the rich and complicated history of porcelain, which she often displays in overwhelming installations and tableaus. Jessica will be having a solo exhibition with PPOW at this years Independent. Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit the lure and power of making things things with her own hands created meaning and served as a refuge and escape from monotony and conformity of Suburbia for Jessica. She was very comfortable spending time alone having her own inner world and being fascinated with materials and beautiful objects. Growing up catholic, she discusses how the imagery of catholizism influenced her and how visiting an all girls catholic school was very intense, but also empowering and subtly feminist. We discuss her manifold interests and her research about the female body, her own body, the relationship to the world, girl culture, materialism, the meaning of objects, sexism and sexist language, authoritarian regimes and misogyny, decoration, beauty, the grotesque, witch trials, wise women - to which her work at Independent will speak to. She talks her love of clay as material and the special care and attendance it needs and how she explores through it what it means to be a human, a woman in the world at this time and place. This Episode is produced in cooperation with Independent Art Fair, New York City and will be part of the fairs OVR for it's upcoming 2023 edition. Recorded February 27, 2023, 36 min. Shownotes https://www.ppowgallery.com/artists/jessica-stoller#tab:thumbnails Working in the realm of figurative sculpture, Jessica Stoller (b. 1981) mines the rich and complicated history of porcelain, harnessing its links to power, desire, and taste. Synthesizing the cultural, historical, and corporeal notions of the female body, Stoller expands the feminist visual vernacular and makes space for subversion, defiance, and play. For Stoller the ‘grotesque' becomes a powerful tool to challenge patriarchal power structures, as female figures flaunt what they are told to hide, reveling in their own pleasure and abjection. Stoller lives and works in West New York, NJ. https://www.independenthq.com/ #IndependentArtFair #IndependentNewYork #Independent2023 #PPOW #JessicaStoller #NewYork #VoicesOnArt #VanHornGallery #DanielaSteinfeld #Podcast #Talk #Storytelling

Wherever you stand on the idea of Valentine's Day, attending to romance in your relationship is important for at least two reasons: to keep the relationship alive, exciting and fun and to continue deepening the connection between you. Ideally you pay attention to romance not just one day in the year but throughout your relationship.Romance has different connotations for everybody; we all like to be romanced in different ways.  For some people romance is more closely associated with the idea of excitement, mystery and passion; for others it is about the deep, steady and safe bond of love. Our way of thinking about romance is influenced by the Romantic period in the 18th/19th century. As an antidote to the previous period of rationalism key features of the Romantic period where a celebration of the emotional, spontaneous, imaginative, the irrational and the mysterious often set in wild natural locations that mirrored the hero's emotional state. Think of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Height with the doomed lovers compelled to continue falling into each other's arms in the blustery winds of the Yorkshire Moors.Romantic gestures make ordinary life extraordinary. They emphasise what is special about the person you love and what attracted you to your partner in the first place. Being romantic means being attentive to your partner, showing them your care and love and noticing their love in return. Romance often takes you back to the early stages of the relationship where you were  falling in love as opposed to staying in love. These intensely pleasurable feelings of love can be conjured up when you decide to focus on them. Visual cues such as photos from this period may help you recall the honeymoon period. In this episode we talk you through an exercise in Imago Therapy by Harville Hendrix that helps you to re-romanticise your relationship to create greater and more loving connection with your partner. And finally... we love seeing our audience grow across the globe. The top cities where most of our listeners live are currently Alpharetta (US), Los Angeles (US), New York (US), Brisbane (Australia), Melbourne (Australia), Calgary (Canada), Gabarone (Botswana), Frankfurt (Germany) and the small town of  Dyserth (UK).  Big shout out to all of you! Wandering around New York, it's very likely that you will stumble upon or make it your mission to get into one of the fantastic four McNally Jackson bookstores located in Soho, Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn or Seaport. Each a well-lit, cleanly-designed literary oasis away from the maddening crowds but with their own flair and ambiance. McNally Jackson became a bookshop in 2004 and it offers a beautiful collection of curated books, highlighting small presses and zines and arranged by the region of the author. Our guest today is Madeline Gressel, a writer and a marketing director at McNally Jackson. Her work has appeared in Virginia Quarterly Review, Brooklyn Rail, and Bookforum, and she is at work on her first novel. Maddie first started working at the original McNally Jackson in Soho as a bookseller and her love of books, readers and the art of bookselling never really waned. We caught up with Maddie while she was in Rome, working away at her first novel. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gotbooks/message
