In a week that saw #BlackAF creator Kenya Barris back out of his development deal with Netflix because they weren't edgy & becoming "CBS", the streamer drops a more crass, yet self-effacing animated feature, AMERICA: THE MOTION PICTURE, which features a chainsaw-wielding George Washington assembling a team of early U.S. historical figures to take on Benedict Arnold & the British Army under King James. In the first part of this review, we look at what this type of film means through the prism of the Kenya Barris' comments & journalist Josh Shepherd's opinion piece on What's On Netflix about the potential damage a film like this could do to Netflix's evolving image as a more safe & family-friendly platform (1:00). Then, we dive into our review of the film including: our love for Lord & Miller and Matt Thompson, movie-stealer Jason Mantzoukas, non-stop pop culture references, & much more (9:16)! Make sure to subscribe to The NOMcast, AKA the Netflix Original Movie podcast at nomcastpod on Twitter, Instagram, & Facebook, where you can join him TONIGHT for a watch party of Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween ahead of his next episode, reviewing the holiday comedy. For the first segment, we dive into the loaded, but unpredictable Documentary Feature category. With a few predictions from the web and a huge ranking by metascore, we offer some rapid fire reviews of the leading contenders, we compare this year’s field to those of the past few, and we offer up some hidden gems from the Netflix slate. But of course, we programmed the opening conversation because we knew Dick Johnson Is Dead would be the latest and greatest awards contender. So you also get a full Oscars Sprint Profile movie review with a non-spoiler section up top, a spoiler warning, and then a spoiler section to close out the episode. We can’t help but relate this story to personal experience and our own families, which deepens this discussion. There’s also plenty of analysis on how dark comedy and tension relief can be used as a means to combat the heavy themes of this film, and the very real late life crisis being filmed by such a brilliant cameraperson such as Kirsten Johnson. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on the film and this category. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & hear us on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you might listen. So we’ve been getting creative with our news episodes, bringing on guests like The Nomcast’s Andrew Morgan to talk about Netflix or leading with one major news story before we do a fun Top 5 Show, like we just did with our Christopher Nolan Wishlist after talking about Tenet. But lost in the shuffle of these podcast programming gymnastics, we haven’t been giving you our typical What We’re Watching rapid fire movie reviews segment. That means, we’re a little pent up. So in the vein of Critically Acclaimed, a podcast we love and you should too, we didn’t overthink the format and decided to review over 20 movies in 1 episode. Also Mike did what he normally does and watched a ton of new stuff, and Mike 1 watched a whole bunch of classics. Of course, M1 hit up a few horror films, and of course, M2 watched a few international films. But overall, we hope the result is a beautiful buffet of movie watching possibilities for any film loving appetite. If you haven’t seen any of these films, don’t worry. The episode is completely spoiler free, and although we joke about potential spoilers, I think we were pretty darned good about steering clear of any major plot movements. Spoiler-a-phobes may find fault as we may talk about the Act I plot / premise or perhaps an early scene or two. But otherwise, it’s all non-spoilers. We hope this episode helps those stuck back in quarantine, and if we’re providing you a service, do please support the show by leaving us a 5 Star Review on Apple Podcasts. We really appreciate the help. Otherwise, we wanna know your thoughts on any of these films. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you might listen. Since Netflix purchased such a major Oscars contender in Aaron Sorkin’s latest, we had fun with a Netflix Shopping List and created two Top 5’s, and you get previews of a bunch of upcoming films for 2020 & beyond. Then we conclude the episode with a mostly non-spoiler review of the collection of short films, Homemade, where filmmakers like Ladj Ly, Paolo Sorrentino, Rachel Morrison, Pablo Larrain, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kristen Stewart, Gurinder Chadha, Sebastian Lelio, etc… composed films in quarantine for a 17 part new series on Netflix. They’ve also been one of the more controversial studios throughout the past awards season while remaining one of the most mysterious powers in the business. So as we begin this Year In Preview, we felt compelled to dedicate a full episode to Netflix. Luckily, we have the perfect guest host ready & willing to help us. He’s Andrew of the NOMcast, AKA the Netflix Original Movies Podcast, and we cannot recommend his show highly enough to our audience. His next episode covers To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, his last two shows covered Horse Girl & David Lynch’s What Did Jack Do?, and of course, he just spent a full awards season worth of content creation studying all of the Netflix Oscar contenders. So do follow Andrew @nomcastpod on Twitter & subscribe to his show via your favorite podcast provider. In this episode, AlsoMike & Andrew dissect how Netflix campaigned for their Oscar hopefuls during the past awards season and how successful they were at all the precursors and then with the Oscar Noms. We break into a fun tangent on how Netflix has positioned themselves in the streaming wars & what their strategies might be going into the 2020 film year. Then we go movie by movie to preview everything we know about this next slate of Netflix Oscar hopefuls. Can Spike Lee win more than just a screenplay trophy? Will Netflix help Glenn Close finally break through into the winner’s circle? Will David Fincher win over voters with his own father’s script in Mank? And which Netflix documentaries & animated films should continue their momentum in both those Oscar categories? It’s another great collaboration between MMO & the NOMcast, and if you enjoyed this episode, do please take a few seconds to leave us both a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts. Although this was a fusion between our two show formats, we still have a non-spoiler section first, building toward an Oscar Lens. Then we do the usual spoiler warning dance music before we break down the plot. Since Andrew’s an expert on all things Netflix, we also discussed what a movie of this caliber could mean for the streaming service and compared what we know about next year’s Netflix Awards slate to what we have for your consideration this season. Andrew is also a married man. So Also Mike can’t help but act like the news team from Anchorman and ask, “what’s love like, Ron” (/ Andrew?) And then we sing “Afternoon Delight.” That all happens metaphorically of course. As in reality, Also Mike just pesters Andrew about whether or not one should watch this movie with their significant other. If you’re waiting for Mike 1’s opinions on Marriage Story, on the lawyering involved, and what he thinks of its Oscar chances, do stay tuned. Hopefully he gets his voice back and we can resume our coverage of the Oscar Race this week. Otherwise, do make sure you become a regular listener of the NOMCAST, which is available on Podbean, Google Play, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and just about everywhere you listen. The Pint Movie Invitational returns to the first man to be an invitee. Andrew Morgan, host of the Nomcast, a great podcast and good friend of ours returns. Will he bring a heady thriller like he did the first time with Memento? Easy answer is no. But he does bring a trailblazing film that introduced the world to one Mr. John J. Rambo. That's right, we draw First Blood on this episode of The Pint! Have a great time as we laugh our way through a film essentially about PTSD. Yeesh.
Mike Butler and Mike Field have survived Forgotten Horror and begin this third season of Forgotten Cinema with a Coen Brothers film and their very first guest! Andrew Morgan from the awesome podcast, the NOMcast! Andrew and the Mikes are talking Burn After Reading, starring John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, George Clooney, Brad Pitt...the list goes on and on. Our three podcasters discuss what draws such talent to the likes of the Joel and Ethan Coen. The amount of detail put into their scripts, the use of vignettes in telling many of their stories. The Mikes and Andrew also ruminate on why this film, despite the great cast and how funny it is, doesn't get put on the pedestal that most Coen Brothers films do. So grab your popcorn, and soda, please notice the exits at the front and rear of the auditorium, and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. And be sure to check out Andrew Morgan in the NOMcast, available wherever you listen to your podcasts!
Andrew Morgan returns with his Welsh-Irish Douchiness and has a fun show idea. Let's recap our favorite 5 films from 20 years ago, 1999!! How many of us chose The Phantom Menace? Who loved the one with the raining frogs? All this and a nice preview of what is coming up on Andrew's great podcast, The Nomcast through the rest of this year. A fun show was had as we discussed all things cinema in '99.
The Valley Indy’s “CT PODCAST INVITATIONAL” continues this week with Andrew Morgan, the host of “The NOMCAST (Netflix Original Movie Podcast).” Netflix, in its quest for streaming domination, is spending billions on creating and/or buying original content. The company has very much changed the game and could be emerging as a challenger to movie theaters. Example -- legendary director Martin Scorsese’s latest film “The Irishmen,” which teams him again with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, is scheduled to stream in November after a limited theatrical run. Morgan and a guest have a deep discussion of the latest Netflix original movies during each “NOMCAST” episode. Morgan, by the way, is a Milford resident with a background in film and television. He’s also a standup comedian who runs, with his brother, Jerry, the Fistful of Jokes website. https://fistfulofjokes.com/the-nomcast
