Blockbuster, one of the few massive corporations that dissolved has had a lot of nostalgia associated with it. When Netflix anounced a show based on the now (almost) dead franchise it was a surprise as Netflix was partially responsible for the death of Blockbuster. Will Netflix ressurect the franchise through this show or kill it yet again? Tales of the Jedi is a series of animated shorts that tell the story of Count Dooku and Ashoka. We review it and let you know if the 6 episode series hits the mark.  And finally, Netflix's Enola Holmes was a huge hit and the sequal has arrived on the streaming service. What should investors think of this week's Tesla earnings? Just one of the questions that we're not answering on this week's PlayingFTSE show! We're actually looking at Netflix, Twitter, and ASML. Netflix reported earnings recently. It's a stock we've been looking at closely, so Steve D has the news and the insight. There are four parts to our Netflix breakdown -- subscriber numbers, the capital structure, an ad-supported tier, and some acquisition news. The company posted better than expected subscriber numbers, which Steve D called well ahead of time. So is the news surprising to our Netflix shareholder, or what he was expecting? And what does he think of the shift away from US and European users to Asia Pacific ones? The introduction of an ad-supported tier looks interesting. Will Netflix be mostly ad-supported with some premium subscribers, or mostly premium with some ad-support. Steve W wants to know the answer and Paul has some interesting ideas for him. Meanwhile, like the rest of us, Elon Musk is attempting to avoid owning Twitter stock. Unlike the rest of us, though, he's being pursued through the courts by the company trying to make him. Paul's been looking at the terms of the case and the Steves have some ideas about what might happen. But could there be something underneath the surface here? There usually is with Elon... Steve W's been having a difficult time lately, with rising share prices making it harder for him to find things that he wants to buy. But maybe ASML could be the answer. Paul and Steve D both own the stock and their earnings this week were strong. ASML makes lithography machines. And they've been shipping them out all over the place. So why aren't their revenues higher? Paul knows why. And is it a problem that their machines are so expensive that only a few customers can afford them? Steve D has the answer. Only on this week's PlayingFTSE!

The summertime is heating up with Episode 93 of Norm Nathan’s VoS. The number may just match today’s temp here in some parts of MA. It’s a scorchah! We have a DBG from July 2nd, 1995 which is titled: ‘Raiders of the Lost Birthday Book’ because we begin with Norm not being able to find said book and a quest may be needed! Was it just misplaced by Norm? Was it stolen by Sid Whittaker and WCCM? (a reference to some scandal back in Ep 91) Will Netflix buy the rights to this astonishing whodunnit? Stay tuned! Onward to the game: Our 1st player is Stan Roberts, calling in from Buffalo. He worked with Norm back on WHDH from 1970-72. They chat quite a bit before the game begins. Some WHDH history, station breaks, technology of the time, and how Norm got his overnight gig. Stan notes that “In an age when machinery is replacing man, you replaced a machine.” Wait until you hear Stan recall the great ad campaign for his show that was on a billboard along the SE Expressway. And there’s talk of Stan’s career when he returned to Buffalo. And now the other players: Michael from PA Tom in Cleveland Robert in Framingham Hope Schauer producing and playing in studio And the wild, different and crazy Ken Newman in traffic. Bdays: Polly Holiday John Sununu Lucy Baines Johnson Turpin Cheryl Ladd Jimmy McNichol And then it’s event time. And we get three! What year did Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to make the first round the world flight at the equator? What year did the Lawrence Welk Show premiere on ABC television? And in what year was The U.S. Army Air Corp created? The game is so exciting that it reminds Norm that just when he feels that he’s been in radio longer than he should be, nope. Not yet. This prompts a possible lead in the DBG Book theft! We get the details on an old survey that Lawrence welk had taken where one of the questions was, “Larry, what do you think of violence? It is revealed that Norm hosted a polka program which featured the one and only, Johnny Wilfahrt. And post-game we get a few more minutes of conversation with Norm and Stan which takes us through to the end. Ep 93, ‘Raiders of the Lost Birthday Book’ is comin’ atcha in 3, 2 and 1.

The 94th Academy Awards are this Sunday. And movie lovers have a lot of questions: Will Netflix finally win big? Which winners will make history? And who will take home the coveted Best Picture prize?  But there's another big question lingering over the awards: Will people tune in to watch?  Last year, the viewership for the Academy Awards declined to the lowest in history. Though the decline was almost certainly linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, viewership for the Oscars has been declining for years.  That decline in viewership – coupled with controversies around diversity and inclusion – has led some critics to question whether awards shows like the Oscars are still relevant.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks with two entertainment journalists about the future of awards shows like the Oscars, and what they're expecting to see when they tune in on Sunday.  Guests:  Sonia Rao is a pop culture reporter for the Washington Post.  Chris Hewitt is the theater and film critic for the Star Tribune.  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.

Ellen Ave - Sports, Business, & Lifestyle

I'm all alone... again :( Ellen Ave, Episode #5: After a question from a friend, I'm talking about Coronavirus and its impact on sport. Talking both short and long term effects, and offering a few opinions and tips here and there, it's not the worst way you could spend 20 minutes! Tune in. How Coronavirus will last longer than we think: Think everything will go back to normal after we get out of lockdown? You're wrong. The Treasury has said we're in a worse position than the 08' global financial crisis. These effects will last years, not weeks. It's not just players that will suffer: What's behind a player? An organisation. With no money in, and money still going out, there's a slight predicament as to what happens there. There's money to be made: And new ways of doing things. There's a whole lot of opportunity for minor and local sports to thrive after we get through these tough times - but how, and why? Is esports a thing? Should TAB review their betting range? Will Netflix start streaming sports? And more! Subscribe, share this with your dads, cousins, aunties and dogs, and follow along the journey! They’ve also been one of the more controversial studios throughout the past awards season while remaining one of the most mysterious powers in the business. So as we begin this Year In Preview, we felt compelled to dedicate a full episode to Netflix. Luckily, we have the perfect guest host ready & willing to help us. He’s Andrew of the NOMcast, AKA the Netflix Original Movies Podcast, and we cannot recommend his show highly enough to our audience. His next episode covers To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, his last two shows covered Horse Girl & David Lynch’s What Did Jack Do?, and of course, he just spent a full awards season worth of content creation studying all of the Netflix Oscar contenders. So do follow Andrew @nomcastpod on Twitter & subscribe to his show via your favorite podcast provider. In this episode, AlsoMike & Andrew dissect how Netflix campaigned for their Oscar hopefuls during the past awards season and how successful they were at all the precursors and then with the Oscar Noms. We break into a fun tangent on how Netflix has positioned themselves in the streaming wars & what their strategies might be going into the 2020 film year. Then we go movie by movie to preview everything we know about this next slate of Netflix Oscar hopefuls. Can Spike Lee win more than just a screenplay trophy? Will Netflix help Glenn Close finally break through into the winner’s circle? Will David Fincher win over voters with his own father’s script in Mank? And which Netflix documentaries & animated films should continue their momentum in both those Oscar categories? It’s another great collaboration between MMO & the NOMcast, and if you enjoyed this episode, do please take a few seconds to leave us both a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts. Welcome to Episode 132 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others.  This week the Geeks (Mitch, Jeff, Jake and Matt Orrin) recorded at the Sexpot Comedy Studios, located above the awesome Mutiny Information Cafe, for another packed episode of geeky goodness.   Batman was a HUGE part of our conversation this week, specifically his lower region.  A new iteration of Batman, geared towards a slightly more mature audience, features the Bat-dong and Jake tells us how big it is.  He makes it seem as if it was as big as Dr. Manhattan's in the Watchmen movie, but hopefully it's not blue.  Imagine the cod piece he'd have to wear.  Fortunately, he has Wayne Tech to create all of the goodies he needs to fight crime.  Especially when its criminals that use THAT technology to commit the crime!  Then again, he couldn't be his best with his trusty manservant, Alfred.  Matt Orrin thinks Batman could never marry another person because he already has a life partner in Alfred.  What are your thoughts? We then talked some Superman, because of the rumors that Henry Cavill is moving on from DCEU.  Nothing has been confirmed, except that negotiations regarding a cameo in the upcoming Shazam movie aren't working.  There have also been talks about Michael B. Jordan possibly being cast as the Man of Steel.  We think Jon Hamm would make a good Superman, but it would depend on what timeline we are looking at and the context. Michael b Jordan casting rumors.  The DCUniverse streaming app is in FULL effect and we are loving it!  So much old content that is now available, like the Justice League and JL Unlimited animated shows.   The Captain Marvel teaser/trailer was just released and it got us very excited.  We saw some Skrulls, a young two-eyed Nick Fury, and Agent Coulson!!  We still don't know a lot about what will happen in this movie, or who Jude Law will portray.  Some think he could be Mar-vell, but we'll have to wait till March 2019.  We also need to know how this movie will tie in to the upcoming Infinity War movie.  We heard Taika Waititi was on set for reshoots...Korg?!  As usual, Marvel talks lead us to Netflix and their related shows.  We discussed Iron Fist, season 2, and Jake felt it left a bad taste similarly to the show, the OA.  What will happen to the future of these shows, and which new shows will be introduced?  When will we ever see these characters in the larger MCU?  Will Netflix ever give up these properties?  We do know the Loki and Scarlett Witch are supposed to get their own show, but on an upcoming Disney streaming service.  Is everyone getting a streaming service?  Stay tuned for more info on the soon to be released Streaming Geeks service. This weeks featured celebrity was Diedrich Bader, as we discussed his best roles.  He was a great Batman, he was awesome in Office Space, and great as Oswald Lee Harvey on the Drew Carey show. What's your favorite role of his?  We then talked about old TV shows, as they are becoming much accessible on the many streaming services available to us, like Hulu or CBS.  We love to watch old superhero shows such as the Flash, whose costume then might be better than the current one.  Its always great when actors from these old shows appear in the new shows.  DC, and especially CW, has been really good about including old actors, such as John Wesley Shipp, Helen Slater, Dean Cain, Mark Hamill and many others.  Do you have a favorite? If you havent already checked out Denver Open Media, and what they have offered then go to https://www.denveropenmedia.org  As you might already know, we'll be on Tuesday nights at 10pm.  Some episodes of Broadcast Geeks are recorded at the Comedy RoomRoom inside of El Charrito at 2104 Larimer Street in the heart of Denver's ballpark neighborhood.
