Guest: Tyler Amburn   Tyler - alcoholics can tend to be emotionally immature. Something happens in their life that in some sense stunts their emotional growth and alcohol becomes their emotional coping mechanism.   Tyler - had the accountability, but as Jesus said in Matthew 26:41, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” There has to be a power greater than yourself that you can rely on in times of weakness - AA talks about that “Higher Power” and we know that His name is Jesus!   Shoutout to Madison Michener with the Amarillo Livestock Auction for sharing the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ!   Every man needs another man…or a few of them…to mentor/disciple them in the faith and in life. Tyler's list of older men include his grandfather (Pawpaw), Madison Michener, and J.D. Ferguson - who are the men in your life speaking truth into your life and calling you up to the man that God has created you to be?!   Tyler - wish I could go back and tell myself about the importance and power of forgiveness, letting go of past hurts and pains, and letting God heal those wounds.   Great resources to help you wrestle with those personal hurts in your life:   When People Are Big and God is Small: Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency, and the Fear of Man by Edward Welch   The Bait of Satan: Living Free from the Deadly Trap of Offense by John Bevere   When you get to the point that you're ready to forgive and release, your obedience is all that is necessary for your healing - the other person may not respond by admitting their fault or asking for forgiveness from you - Tyler, “it's all about keeping your side of the street clean” - as Christians we know that God is the one who has cleaned our side of the street with His grace and we can extend that same grace and forgiveness to others, whether they “deserve” it or not!   Tyler - my biggest times of growth are when I'm surrounded by Godly men who can speak life and truth into my life - “get into their hip pocket” and “drop the pride.”   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Hey hey! Do you ever struggle with caring for family, friends, and co-workers without pushing your own needs to the back burner? Well, friend, you are precisely in the right place today!  My friend Dr. Alison Cook joins me on the show to talk about her most recent book, The Best of You, which helps us find our true selves while in relationship with God, other people, and ourselves.  During our conversation, Alison teaches us how to find our best and most authentic versions of ourselves in a way that allows us to show up for ourselves before we show up for others. Also, she details some of the ways childhood wounds, confusing church messages, and cultural conditioning toward women and their wants have kept women stuck, overwhelmed, and defeated.  Dr. Alison Cook is a psychologist and the author of two books, including her new book, The Best of You and Boundaries for Your Soul. For 20 years, Alison has empowered women to heal from past wounds, develop a strong sense of self, forge healthy relationships with others, and experience a loving God who is for them. Her weekly email and podcast reach more than 70,000 people. She specializes in bringing faith and psychology together to create real change in people's lives. Alison and her husband, Joe, are the parents of two adult children. They are based out of Boston and spend time in the mountains of Wyoming as often as possible. Listen in to learn more about: How Christian women internalize an unhealthy message of putting our needs and wants last (and how we can work to reverse it!) How to identify the differences between selfishness, selflessness, and selfhood. The signs that we have given up on ourselves and how to rediscover our voice.  Favorite quotes: ~We think of Jesus' words “Love others as yourself.” There is an assumption there that there is a you that is showing up; that you know who that you is that  you are  bringing into relationships but a lot of women don't understand or don't feel like they have permission to do that work.   ~When I hide myself, when I make myself invisible, when I play like a doormat, it's not just bad for me , but I'm not bringing the best of who I am to the people I love.  ~When I'm really being my true self , when I'm aligned with myself, I'm empowering  other people which is what helps them heal and become who they really need to be. ~We are worth so much more than just numbing through all the various ways we can check out ; God wants so much more for us. Shortly after experiencing a life-threatening stroke, our guest today, Author and Psychologist, Dr. Alison Cook, found herself walking in a hay field, talking to God. As she wrestled with the "whys" of having a stroke in her forties, she felt God ask her a pointed question, "Alison, what do YOU want with this life YOU still have to live?" In today's conversation, we preview Alison's newest book (releasing in September 2022), "The Best of You: Break Free from Painful Patterns, Mend Your Past, and Discover Your True Self in God," and reflect on her recent medical crisis and ask ourselves that same question, "What do WE want with this life WE still have to live?" On Episode 56 of Outside The Studio Why does the same pain keep coming back? Why do some moments feel sad even when they are supposed to happy? Clinical psychologist Dr. Radhule Weininger joins Tessa to discuss Long-standing, Recurrent, Painful Patterns of hurt - or as Radhule likes to call them 'lurps'. In their conversation they explore how parents influence how their children deal with adversity, having role models who process anger healthily, whether we come from a past life, and how childhood trauma is a spectrum. Radhule Weininger, Ph.D., MD. is a clinical psychologist and author of Heart Medicine which received a foreward by H.H. the Dalai Lama. She is the co-founder of Mindful Heart Programs which offer free educational programs in mindfulness and meditation. She also teaches Buddhist meditation and Buddhist psychology. (08:58) The spectrum of childhood trauma. (17:37) How parents affect how we process trauma or adversity. (20:37) Is there an age when we are more likely to look inward? (26:15) Do we have a past life? (34:02) How the mindfulness field is changing. (43:39) Is manifestation enough? 5 Key Takeaways 1. There are many more possibilities than just nature or nurture. There is so much still to learn about our reality and why we experience and process reality the way we do. 2. How our parents reacted to adversity when we were children deeply affects how we frame adversity when we encounter it today. 3. We all have different internal ages. Our internal age is only one of the things that make us all different from each other. Your path is unlike any other. 4. The universe comes towards us to help us if we come towards it. 5. Being who we came here to be, living and experiencing life in a way that is authentically ours, and remaining true to ourselves, is incredibly difficult when, from our earliest days, we become encumbered with the experiences of culture, the programming of society, and the big and small traumas of life. Whether or not we've been through catastrophic events or situations, the low level stress of life, of getting by, doing and being our best every day, in world that seems – according the to 24-hour news cycle – increasingly broken and divided, is traumatic. As we've explored in previous episodes of this podcasts, our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual selves are all closely interlinked, often to the point of being indiscernible from one another. So when negative patterns appear repeatedly in our behaviour, in our mental and emotional wellbeing, our health, or even our circumstance, the cause of our problems might be just as likely to come from within as from without. In this episode I'm joined by psychologist, doctor, meditation teacher Radhule Weininger, who says that with compassion, loving self awareness, and a willingness to forgive and let go, we can unpick the deep seated traumas that cause the negative patterns that prevent us being who we really are, and having the life experiences we came here to have. Radhule is the author of Heart Medicine: How to Stop Painful Patterns and Find Peace and Freedom - a book that helps us to identify our emotional and behavioral patterns – patterns she calls Long-standing, Recurrent, Painful Patterns of hurt (or Lurps!) ≠ through the lens of loving awareness—without self-judgment or blame, learning to hold ourselves as we would a dear friend, with space and grace. If you want to know how highly recommended the book comes, the forwards were written by his holiness the Dalai Llama and Joanna Macy.
