Ep 176 Dr Karl Kruszelnicki - A Periodic Tale

Stand Out Life

Dr Karl is best known here in Australia for his ability to make science not only accessible, but engaging and fascinating, He's been a staple in our media landscape from his early days on Triple J, to his multiple podcasts, books, and extensive media presence - a true science story-teller. With the launch of his memoir ‘A Periodic Tale' we explore in this conversation his early years as the only child of Holocaust survives who fled to Australia in 1950. He then described undertaking a convoluted cacophony of a career. From working as a physicist in a steelworks, to racing modified rally cars, his drug-crazed hippie years in Papau New Guinea, to training as a medical Dr off the back of an off-handed comment that Dr Fred Hollows said to him once. After he applied to be a NASA astronaut in the 1980s and 'failed', he ended up live broadcasting the first space shuttle launch on Triple J instead. Unexpectedly, that blasted off his media career, and from there it was a stratospheric rise from radio to TV, books, newspapers, speaking, podcasts and the internet. You will hear from this conversation a little about how Dr Karl's brain works - he has an insatiable curiosity that continues to drive pure wonder and awe. Actually he teaches us all that you don't have to know the answers, as long as you continue to ask questions. This conversation is one worth holding onto, and allowing it to ignite your own curiosity. And I can thoroughly recommend Dr Karl's memoir ‘A Periodic Tale' to absorb more of his wisdom and experiences.

We know that people can have different types of intelligence, but what about our dogs?  I think every pet parent I know has been astonished by how smart their dog is – and usually in a good way. Author Jennifer Holland explores the many different ways that dogs show their intelligence in her new book Dog Smart: Life Changing Lessons in Canine Intelligence. Jennifer interviewed everyone from scientists to dog trainers to pet parents to learn how dogs demonstrate their smarts.  I was fascinated to learn about all the different types of working dogs – some of which I'd never heard of before! But what does this mean for pet parents?  Jennifer shares with us what she now does differently with her own dogs after everything she learned while writing Dog Smart. We also discuss the types of intelligence we've seen in our own dogs. Jennifer may also have the most adventurous career I've ever heard of. While working on assignment for National Geographic, she did everything from swim with sharks to camp out amongst the Indigenous people of Papau New Guinea (and the mosquitos!). While writing Dog Smart, Jennifer's intrepid spirit shows when she dons a “bite suit” to be “attacked” by a law enforcement K-9 and again when led blindfolded through the streets of Manhattan by a guide dog-in-training. (This was my dog Nessie's first time being my in-person interview helper, so please excuse her kong-chewing and water bowl slurping in the background.) The ancient efficacy of magic in healing and change-work - Ryan Simbai Jenkins

The Primal Happiness Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2024 63:12

Why would we use words like magic in the same sentence as healing and change-work? We're joined by guest Ryan Simbai Jenkins, a hypnotherapist and coach with an unusual upbringing. Born in Papua New Guinea*, his first experiences with non-traditional ways of healing came early on in life when his mother (a medical anthropologist) discovered a “lost” indigenous tribe called the Hagahai people. Ryan witnessed first hand how the tribal healers and shamans used forms of Trance to heal people from diseases of the body and mind. This profoundly influenced the course of his life. In this show, Ryan and Lian explored the topic of magic and its relationship to change work. They first define what they even mean by ‘magic, discussing different definitions of magic, including Alastair Crowley's and past guest Daniel Ingram. Then they delve into the practicality and efficacy of magic, drawing on personal experiences and indigenous and traditional perspectives, and also making the distinction between working spiritually and working magically, and the power of consciously aligning ourselves with the flow of healing.  We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: There is a distinction between ordinary magic and extraordinary magic, with the latter involving causal effects beyond what is considered ordinary cause and effect. Magic has practical applications and has played a role in human survival and shaped our existence for most of human history, which is why indigenous perspectives offer valuable insights into the understanding and practice of magic. You can consciously align yourself with the flow of healing and explore magic both for yourself and in change work with others, beginning with creating simple rituals and seeing what changes you notice compared to how things usually go, and creating a relationship with nature, such as connecting with a certain tree. The T20 World Cup kicked off on Sunday, with two Group B fixtures; Oman vs Papau New Guinea and Bangladesh vs Scotland. We are joined by Scouting Cricket's Ronan Alexander to understand how Scotland upstaged Bangladesh causing the first upset of the tournament on the very first day and we reflect on an impressive 10 wicket opening victory for Oman over Papau New Guinea. Scotland and Oman both played with positive intent, getting Scotland out of jail when they were 53-6 whilst Oman's net run rate was boosted rather nicely. Papau New Guinea looked starstruck and it was an unfortunately silly run out that saw a promising middle order stand crumble. Bangladesh let complacency creep into their game and their lack of firepower with the bat saw them flail. Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises, and Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line, spoke to what the positive multidimensional impact the resumption of cruising means to Seattle, the local community and Alaska.Holland America Line will kicked off its Alaska season with Nieuw Amsterdam setting sail, July 24, and Princess Cruises followed with Majestic Princess sailing on July 25. Each line will operate ten cruises sailing out of Seattle through September. This marks the return to cruising and Alaska for both lines, which combined have more than 125 years of experience bringing cruisers to The Great Land. Historically, one in two guests who cruise to Alaska sail on Princess or Holland America. Both cruise lines have been homeporting out of the Port of Seattle for more than 20 years. Operationally, each ship visit directly contributes more than $364,000 to the local economy in provisioning (fuel, food, flowers, piano tuning, supplies), port taxes, and spending during a full season.Princess Cruises is the world's leading international premium cruise line and tour company operating a fleet of 14 modern cruise ships to 380 destinations around the globe. Princess celebrates more than 50 years sailing to Alaska, bringing more guests to the Great Land than any other cruise line. Holland America Line has been exploring the world since 1873 and was the first cruise line to offer adventures to Alaska and the Yukon nearly 75 years ago. Its fleet of premium ships visits more than 400 ports in 98 countries around the world, offering an ideal mid-sized ship experience.Princess Cruises Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Shore Power in JuneauPrincess Cruises made history when the cruise line introduced its revolutionary shore power program and began operations in partnership with the City and Borough of Juneau and Alaska Electric Light and Power Company in the summer of 2001. Now, 20 years later when Princess Cruises vessels arrive at the Franklin Dock, ships continue to “plug in” to local surplus hydroelectric power and turn off the diesel engines, reducing the impact of visible air emissions and the cruise line's carbon footprint in an effort applauded by local government officials and the residents of the capital city. The 20th anniversary milestone was recognized as Majestic Princess made her maiden call to the port of Juneau and commissioned to connect to the Juneau electrical grid. Princess Cruises President Jan Swartz, Majestic Princess Captain Dino Sagani, Alaska Electric Light and Power Company President and General Manager Connie Hulbert and Juneau Mayor Beth Weldon and City Manager Rorie Watt were in attendance.“Shore power in Juneau has been a significant win-win situation, not only for Princess but also for the customers of Alaska Electric Light and Power Company and the residents of the City and Borough of Juneau who have been incredible partners over the last 20 years,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. “Our beneficial collaboration has paved the way for the cruise industry to reduce air emissions and allow cruise ships to ‘plug in.'”In addition to this investment, for the past 20 years, every dollar spent by Princess for purchasing electrical energy in Juneau has been credited to a cost of power adjustment, or COPA account. This credit is used to offset any diesel expenses in the next quarter, and any extra funds go back to residents and businesses in Juneau in the form of a rebate on electric bills. To date, this has benefitted the Juneau community by $8.5 million dollars. Each year, Princess ships plug in more than 300 shore power connections. This ground-breaking technology has now grown and is used by various cruise lines in port cities including Seattle (2005), Vancouver (2009), San Diego (2010), San Francisco (2010), Los Angeles (2011), New York (2012) and Halifax (2014), as well as internationally in Shanghai and Kristiansand, Norway, with more and more port cities becoming shore power enabled. The length of time needed to connect a ship to shore power and shut down the vessel's diesel generator is approximately 40 minutes after the ship has been secured at the dock. Once connected, the ship's engines are powered down and the ships relies on the local power system for all ship's services while in port. Holland America Line Takes Delivery of Highly Anticipated New Ship Rotterdam from FincantieriHolland America Line took delivery of Rotterdam today, July 30, 2021, officially making it the 11th ship in the fleet. David Champion is the CEO of Maya PBC and Co-Founder & Director of Unlimited Sciences, which is a psychedelic research nonprofit that uses the thoughtful and anonymous collection of data to understand how psychedelic therapy can be offered with harm-free, positive outcomes at scale. Prior to this venture, David was the Co-Founder & CPO at Baker Technologies, the leading (and first of its kind) CRM for the cannabis industry. After successfully exiting the company with a valuation of $250MM, he served as a campaign lead in the Denver Psilocybin Initiative, which helped Denver become the first U.S. city to reform the psilocybin policy by decriminalizing the substance.  David graduated summa cum laude in Architecture from Cambridge University and built a nonprofit to help Kenyan children access adequate schooling. Brought up in Papau New Guinea, Portugal and Scotland, he took his wealth of world experience and began his career in New York with Daniel Libeskind, working on the Ground Zero masterplan. David has a decade of experience designing consumer software and cultivating a wide variety of interest in behavioral data, digital art, user experience design, and mindfulness. Now, if you're wondering if there's anything this man hasn't done, just wait to hear how Unlimited Sciences is pairing up with John Hopkins to change the way we approach mental wellness.    We also talk about: How David's formative experiences with psychedelics influenced his interest in the space now. The work of The Zendo Project, a subsidiary of MAPS that works to reduce the number of psychiatric hospitalizations and arrests by creating an environment where volunteers can work alongside one another to improve harm reduction and “sitting” skills during psychedelic experiences. The problematic, binary philosophy presented in the US, where plant medicines are seen as strictly medicinal or strictly recreational. David's involvement in decriminalizing psilocybin in Denver, Colorado. The importance (and enough-ness) of pushing just the first domino down to spark an entire movement. The collaborative efforts among the country's change-makers to bring safe and sustainable entheogen use to the masses. Seeing psychedelic-assisted therapy as a cause, rather than an industry. Cannabis as a product-centric industry, and psychedelics as a service-oriented marketplace. The creation of a longitudinal, observational research study specifically designed to investigate entheogens in a naturalistic setting. The importance of set, setting, onboarding, and integration for safe and meaningful “trips.” How to amplify the neurogenesis component of psilocybin for long-term benefits.   We're on the cusp of discovering how psychedelics can help heal humanity — and we need your help! Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand, with the interview available as both audio and a transcribed excerpt. This week he talks to Rebekah and Tamati Norman.Business at its best can be a tool for bringing countries and peoples together - and things like fair trade and conscious consumerism hold part of the solution to helping traditional communities enter the global economy. One country that is really quite close, and big, and populated and but not widely known visited or understood is Papau New Guinea, more than 8 million people, living mainly rural and farming lives, with some of the most amazing geographical and cultural diversity and oldest cultures in the world. Colonialism, mining exploitation, civil war and international neglect have meant that PNG faces many challenges today - with the exploitation and unrest still forces to contend with, But perhaps the biggest issue is isolation - with such a small, amount of travel, trade and understanding meaning unethical mining and practices continue. One of the coolest things about business is the way it can help lift and connect, and today’s guests are working to do just that. Tamati and Rebekah Norman turned family connections into PNG direct, a company connecting organic and naturally produced oils, spices and essential oils with international customers. Tamati is the former chair of the NZ Papau New Guinea business council, working to make more links. Traditional and respectful natural production is a big feature for the couple, who are are behind Native Rituals, a modern Aotearoa apothecary company, making balms and fragrances that incorporate ingredients traditionally used in Māori preparations across time.  To talk honouring the past and ancient knowledge and arming people for the future, Tamati and Rebekah join us now. A conversation with Ursula Rakova of Tulele Peisa, a nonprofit formed by the elders of the Carteret Islands to direct the relocation of their communities from their low-lying island chain to the “big island” of Bougainville in Papau New Guinea. While the Paris framework considered 1.5 Celsius an aspirational target, increasingly cities are declaring 1.5 their goal right out of the gate, as has San Antonio. This movement from 'less-than-two' to 1.5 or less is hardly incidental but rather life or death for many of the world's low-lying island states, representatives of which pushed back hard on the 2-degree Paris proposal, insisting they needed “1.5 to stay alive.”

#394: The Incredible True Story of the Renegade WWII Pilots Who Helped Win the War in the Pacific

The Art of Manliness

In 1942, the United States was fighting a war in two major theaters: Europe and the Pacific. But in the early days of WWII, the US and its allies had a “Europe First” strategy which resulted in more troops, supplies, and attention being funneled to that theater. American forces in the Pacific were charged with protecting Australia from Japan, but given scant resources to fulfill that mandate. But a group of enterprising and rebellious bomber airmen stationed in Papau New Guinea grew tired of playing defense against the Japanese and decided to take the war to the enemy by going on daredevil, near-suicide missions. In his book "Lucky 666," Bob Drury shares the incredible story of these airmen and their ringleader, Captain Jay Zeamer. Bob walks us through the history of the war in the Pacific, including internal battles between U.S. commanders and the lack of logistical support American forces in the Pacific received during the early days of the war. He then introduces us to Zeamer, sharing what set him apart from other airmen and why so many were drawn to his charismatic leadership. Bob then shares how Jay and his renegade crew took an old dilapidated B-17 bomber and fixed it up themselves so they could take the war to Japan, and how the men split their time between landing in the brig and receiving awards for valor. It all leads up to a climatic dogfight — the longest in US aviation history — that would help turn the tide of the war in the Pacific. This is a story about friendship, leadership, and gritty boldness that's also incredibly moving. Grab a tissue. You’re going to need it by the end. Get the full show notes at aom.is/lucky666
