We've been talking a lot about brand lately on the show. Recent episodes featuring Patrick Hanlon and Rick Ray have centered all of us, brands and creators, agencies and vendors alike … we've become centered on telling a brand story. But we can't leave it at that. We have to put that brand story into action. I happened to be in the audience at CEX, the Creator Economy Expo, in Cleveland last month, to see Jay Acunzo speak. He's formerly with ESPN, Google, HubSpot and a few other places. He's a content guy and a podcaster (subscribe to his show Unthinkable) so I wanted to see what he had to say. His talk on podcasting at CEX was that perfect explanation of how to take a brand story and put it into action. So I asked Jay to come on the show and talk about that, not just from a podcasting perspective but for any creator, or brand for that matter. The essence of what I took away from his talk is that as content creators, we don't need to worry about being the best or the biggest. We only need to worry about being our audience's favorite. Today on Winfluence, we're going to dig into Jay's approach to building great content and find out from him how we can do just that with our brand and our content. In doing so, we're going to move from our brand story, to actual storytelling that drives our execution. Get out your notebooks and pens, gang. This one is going to be a note-taker. This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. We help brands solve a couple of big problems. We also have free solutions for creators you need to know about. For the brands out there, what CIPIO.ai does best is source authentic and high-performing user-generated content you can use to fuel your paid, owned, earned and shared content strategies. UGC performs better. We help you get as much of it as you want. If you also want those users to post the UGC on their channels to become influential voices for your brand, our software helps make that happen, too. For you creators, when you authenticate into CIPIO.ai's platform, we have a free media kit you can use to market your influence, content and channels to brands. You can customize it, then pop out a PDF or a web version to share. You can even create different versions for different clients on the fly. We also have an incredible referral program that pays you 20% commission on the first year's revenue from any brand you refer to CIPIO.ai. You can learn more at CIPIO.ai. We spent some time recently with Patrick Hanlon talking about Primal Branding. Having that deep assessment of who you are as a brand can inform and even drive everything you do. I think we reached the conclusion that spending time to deeply understand and define your brand is important, whether you are a content creator or have products and services to sell. The topic of branding is quite intriguing to me. When it's done right, the brand is memorable, if not successful. So I wanted to continue the conversation, but add some different perspective to it. Rick Ray is the co-founding partner of brandstory. It is a brand marketing consulting firm currently based in Italy, though Rick has worked on both sides of the Atlantic over the years. Rick's experience is leading big agency brand efforts globally, but he's spent the last 19 years helping companies define their brand story. Rick's general philosophy is that success comes from standing out. Brands need to tell a compelling story. That sounds similar to our conversation about Primal Branding recently, doesn't it. That's because it is. Rick's spin, though, often starts with HR so you're hiring people who buy into that story. His firm digs deep into an organization to find the untold, unheard, unknown and sometimes untellable stories that surprise and delight, move emotions and what he says, “Liberates people power.” As you might imagine, the same process can apply to creators and personal brands, too. But for you brand-side marketers out there, how can you brand story inform the creators and influencers you choose to work with? We'll find out more from Rick on Winfluence. As always, this episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. Let us scale your user-generated content needs and deliver authentic, high-performing UGC to fuel your paid, owned and earned content strategies. Learn more at CIPIO.ai. But we want to take a moment to tell you about a new sponsor of the Marketing Podcast Network. Support for all the shows on MPN, including Winfluence, is provided by ActiveCampaign. Whether you are a creator or represent a company, agency or other stakeholder in the influencer marketing space, you have a brand. It may or may not be a good one. Or at least one that is well-defined, clearly communicated and the like, but you have a brand. If you haven't articulated what that brand is, you're kind of leaving it up to those around you to define or even assume what it is. The more you can articulate what that brand is, what it stands for, what it strives for, the better chance you have of recruiting fans and followers. If you're rather extreme in defining it, you can evolve that brand following into a brand community. What if I told you there was a process to branding that is so relevant to the influence marketing world that YouTube requires its study for employees so they understand how to build audience and advocacy? There is. It's called Primal Branding and it's the brainchild of Patrick Hanlon. Today on Winfluence, we're going to dig into what Primal Branding is. How you can apply its principles to your brand, whether you're a personal brand content creator or a marketer for a company or product. We'll look at case studies of Primal Branding in action – I'm sure there's one big one you know well but just don't know it's Patrick's work – and dig into how it can solve some of the marketing world's biggest challenges. This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. the community commerce marketing platform. You brands out there probably have a content problem. You need more and better performing content for paid social campaigns. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok … the ad creative that performs best is user-generated content. CIPIO.ai does two things really well. We source authentic UGC from your community of customers, fans and followers and fill those content coffers. The other thing … identify the influential people in your community and have them also post on their channels, sharing valuable word-of-mouth recommendations with their friends, family and followers. Working in brand and marketing, we hear influential writers and thought-leaders use the words ‘tribe' and 'community'. These words are commonly spoken by industry gurus such as Seth Godin and Marty Neumier. They're used frequently to describe our association with products, places, people and companies. But, fundamentally, what is a tribe? In the dictionary, there are many interpretations - the most relevant is ‘a group of persons having a common character, occupation, or interest'.So how do brands manage to build a tribe or community? This book explains all:Primal Branding by Patrick HanlonPatrick believes that attracting and building communities is about adopting a primal code. There are 7 pieces of code, which are:Creation storyCreedIconsRitualsPagansThe sacred wordsLeaderIf each piece of code is worked on and delivered, he believes you can create a belief system that not only attracts a tribe but makes them loyal fans, followers and customers. I grew up in the St. Louis Park and Hopkins Community. I went to Junior High and some of the High school in Hopkins. My daughters and stepkids go to Hopkins and I moved back to Hopkins with my wife after my retirement from the Army. So ensuring that the right person is in the office that runs my city is very important to me and my family.Patrick Hanlon is the right person for the job, he is someone that truly cares about the community that he grew up in and wants it to thrive and be a leader on many issues that the people truly care about.Patrick talks to me about many of the issues that are important to him and what he sees for the future of Hopkins looks like. Patrick comes from humble beginnings with a mother that became very ill when he was a young age but before her passing had already set important values and morales into him and that was to love and care for everyone and most importantly to always give back to the community and always listen to those around him and act with his heart. This was very different from my usual episodes but definitely a great episode on many levels, this is an episode that is a must listen and get some great insight into the mind of someone that wants nothing but great things for his community and someone that is taking action into making a change on a bigger scale for his community.below is are links for more on Patrick Hanlonhttps://hanlonforhopkins.com/For the below link start at 1hr 29minhttps://hopkinsmn.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=638

You don't buy something because you're attached to the product. You buy something because you're attached to a feeling you can associate with the product. People aren't dedicated to a brand because they love the logo. No-- they're dedicated to what a brand allows them to believe. Your clients are seeking a specific feeling and experience. If your brand can create belief systems that attract communities, your brand will stand the test of time. My guest today is Patrick Hanlon, author of PRIMAL BRANDING. This ground-breaking book uncovers the root code for building authentic audiences and brand communities. PRIMAL BRANDING is required reading at YouTube. As CEO/founder of primalbranding.co, Hanlon works with billion-dollar brands and those who want to become billion-dollar brands. Clients have included Google, Levi's, Microsoft, PayPal, PepsiCo, VW, Kraft, Shopify, TimeWarner, Upworthy, United Nations and others. Patrick has spoken at NYU, FIT, IDEO, H&P Innovation Series, and holds Primal.Live events (virtually and live) in China, Europe, South Africa, Argentina, Colombia and elsewhere. On today's episode we discuss: Primal Branding: Patrick began developing this central ideology 20 years ago. He shares his belief that brands are not a product/ service/ or company – rather a brand speaks to a “belief system” and should attract a community. “Nobody Cares”: According to Patrick this is the number one rule of marketing we'd do best to keep in mind. We discuss the strength of knowing who your people are and how to build an audience. Marketing Metrics: It used to be said that word of mouth was the best way to promote a brand. We talk about the value of having a loyal audience and Patrick breaks down how digital media has created a method for quantifying “water cooler talk.” I can't wait for you to listen in and to learn how to activate your Primal Brand as Patrick Hanlon shows us his way. PS: If you loved this episode, please head on over to your podcast app to rate and give us a review. We need your help in sharing the Sell From Love message with others. Finka and the SFL podcast team appreciate you for listening and spreading the word.
In the book, “Primal Branding,” Patrick Hanlon outlines the 7 elements that makes it easy for someone to fall in love with a brand. This is the stuff that grows YouTube channels and businesses every day, but they're the same elements that capture our kids' hearts for our “family brand.” Today I share a bit of what that looks like. On this episode of the ClarityConnects podcast, Patrick Hanlon, CEO of PrimalBranding.co and a world-leading brand practitioner who is the author of Primal Branding, systematically breaks down branding and its functionality, and shares how companies can flourish following a tumultuous year that has heightened people’s need to belong to brands that have authentic belief systems.Resources from this episode:PrimalBranding.coPrimal Branding Book (a book that changed the way I look at branding)Enjoy!

In this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, host Steve Brown speaks with Patrick Hanlon, author of Primal Branding. Patrick works with a number of large brands, and his unique book has grown in influence over time; the book has a perennial nature, and its popularity grew at a slow burn, rather than exploding onto the marketing scene in a flash and quickly growing obsolete. The book grew out of Patrick's perception that a number of brands were not representing themselves in as authentic and compelling a way as they could. In his book, he works through the code that underlies effective branding. This code is common to all kinds of messaging trying to appeal to people, from that of a church to that of any business. The seven components of the code are creation story, ceed, rituals, icons, sacred words, non-believers, and leaders. The code is a strategic brand narrative, and understanding it helps consumers to gain a sense of familiarity and belonging. The goal in working with this code is to fill in the spaces in a consumer's mind in a way that makes more sense than the last guy did, drawing them into a business by drawing them into the business's narrative. Patrick's work highlights the fact that even brands are communities. In a culture today that prizes authenticity and community, Patrick has seen the primal code broadly and effectively used. He continues to move on to new and exciting projects, such as his current work with IBM, and he even holds Primal live events. Listen to learn how Patrick comments on senses as icons, primal code and its help in acquiring funding, expanding one's influence as an author, and even the primal code construct applying to veterans returning home. We interview Patrick Hanlon the author of Primal Branding and is the CEO and founder of THINKTOPIA, a global brand and strategic innovation practice for Fortune 100 clients including American Express, Levis, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PricewaterhouseCoopers and many others.
This week we have a very special episode of the On Brand podcast! Actually, it’s Part 1 of a two-episode special commemorating 100 interviews with industry-leading brand builders. To kick off Part 1, we go back to the beginning. Our first guest ever on January 1, 2015, was Patrick Hanlon, author of Primal Branding and The Social Code. A lot has changed since then and I couldn’t wait to catch up with On Brand guest #1. About Patrick Hanlon Patrick Hanlon is one of the leading brand practitioners in the world. He is CEO and founder of Thinktopia, a global strategic and brand transformation practice for Fortune 100 companies including American Express, Levis, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Kraft Foods, Johnson & Johnson, Yum! Foods, Wrigley, PayPal, Gap, the United Nations and others. His book Primal Branding, is the seminal work that looks at brands as belief systems that people opt-in to. Hanlon’s Primal Branding construct is now recognized by YouTube, as their recommended method for designing and attracting social communities. Hanlon’s latest book The Social Code: Designing Community In The Digital Age defines how to create communities via social media: and how to attract advocates who become so passionate about your success, they are willing to create it themselves. He has been quoted in Fast Company, Business Week Online, Advertising Age, ADWEEK, Entrepreneur, CNBC, and NPR, as well as media around the world. Hanlon is an online contributor to Forbes, Advertising Age, and others. He was also featured as a subject matter expert in the 10- episode TV documentary series “The Kennedy Files” from Aspyr Media. Episode Highlights What’s changed since Patrick was last here on the show? “A lot!” Hanlon noted, talking about the results of the 2016 presidential election. “Many are wondering — is this the end of authenticity? It may be the end of the (buzz)word ‘authenticity but trust is still important. Your brand is community — what others say about you.” Trust is important if you’re building a community. Politicians and presidents are absolutely brands. Since his first visit, Hanlon was also a part of the TV documentary on the Kennedys where he was asked if they are a brand? “Yes — brands are belief systems made up of primal code.” Hanlon then took us through all of the pieces of the Kennedy’s code from their creed (“Ask not what your country can do for you …”) and numerous icons (fashion, sunglasses). But what about Trump? "The biggest lesson for American business in all of this is that now politics has been as disrupted as other industries have been. More than the end of authenticity, this is the end of political laundering.” Unfiltered messages (good or bad) are what resonated with the electorate and propelled both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders to unexpected heights. What remains to be seen is how the Trump brand squares with the brand of the United States. Hanlon’s primal branding system is so effective it can even be applied to our country with our creed (“life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness), icons (flag, liberty bell, etc), and rituals (voting, the fourth of July). What brand has made Patrick smile recently? “I know there are brands that make me smile less today — like Apple and Starbucks. The concept that really makes me smile is virtual reality — what can be done with the technology." To learn more, go thinktopia.com and the Primal Branding page on Facebook. As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community …Recently Conrad Chua, head of admissions and marketing for Cambridge MBA gave us a shout for our episode featuring Robert Rose (with his fun Oracle vs. Marvel fact). Yes, it’s me. Marc Hershon — your host and hot cross bun for Epi143 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. We actually kick off this installment of Succotash Clips with the first of two musical offerings from our chum Abner Serd over at his Shaggy Dogs & Tall Tales soundcast. We've got a pile of snippets from comedy soundcasts to share with you. They’ve been gathered from near and far by our Associate Producer Tyson Saner, yours truly, and a few sent in by podcasters themselves via our direct upload link at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. Included in this show are clips from 2 Dope Queens, 288 Podcast, Bertcast, Mouth Time with Reductress, Proudly Resents, and Rex Rivetter, Private Eye. In addition we have a post-election Burst O' Durst segment by political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, plus a month-and-a-half old chat with Chris Mancini (Comedy Film Nerds) from the Podcast Lab at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. I’m also going to feature a good old-fashioned folk song — Jesse James Blues — by a friend of mine, Patrick Hanlon. And there’s also another song from our buddy Abner Serd, not to mention a long-awaited return to the Tweetsack with our Carnival of Convivial Comradeship. Also, this epi is brought to you in timely fashion by Henderson’s Turkey Trousers. If you want to do it up right for Thanksgiving this year, stop dressing at the kids’ table and get yourself some Turkey Trousers from Henderson’s Pants! A COUPLA PLUGS In the real world, you can catch me live if you’re in the Bay Area, specifically in Marin County, on December 1st when I’ll be hosting a Conversation with Michael Krazny. You may know Michael from NPR. He’s a humorist, a commentator and an author. And we’ll be at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael starting at 7:30 PM. You can find out more at http://hersh.co/krazny120116. Then in January, Succotash has been invited to participate in the 16th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest! They're going to have us do a kind of roundtable with a bunch of the podcasters they’re have on hand. Too early to tell you who’s on the docket yet, but I’ll keep you informed. We’re going to be on Saturday, January 22nd, at 4:30, at Piano Fight in the city. Go to http://www.SFSketchfest.com for tix and deets. THE CLIPS 2 Dope QueensOne of the hottest shows to pop onto the soundcast radar this past year has been 2 Dope Queens with the absolutely delightful Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, plus their favorite comedians who join them for stories about sex, romance, race, hair journeys, living in New York, and Billy Joel. They’re deep into their second season now, and our Associate Producer Tyson Saner has shaved us off a taste from their Epi17, “Fifty Shades of Matthew McConaughey”, where they’re joined by The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand. That interview was bookended by two comedians, and Tyson mentioned that the show, to him, feels like a well produced LIVE talk show devoid of FCC regulations. I like that description. Proudly ResentsThere are lots and lots of fans of Adventure Time out there and friend-of-Succotash Adam Spiegelman recently talked with staff writer Kent Osborne (also star of Uncle Kent and Uncle Kent 2), on his Proudly Resents soundcast. (Adam and I were supposed to try to coffee it up when I was in LA for the Podfest back in September but between his new child and my not wanting to lose my coveted spot in the Podcast Lab, we couldn’t do it.) 288 PodcastWe had another clip uploaded to us from Matt Slayer, co-host of the 288 Podcast. I met Matt and his wife, Draven Star, in the Podcast Lab last September during the LA Podfest. They are an…interesting couple. Draven Star is an award-winning Erotic Video performer, they like bourbon — the name of their show is taken from 288 Bourbon — and their show is sort of a tribute to the Explicit rating on iTunes, you might say, In the clip they sent along, they interview porn actress Ella Nova. BertcastCongratulations to comedian Bert Kreischer, who just passed the 200 episode mark on his Bertcast soundcast! Tyson snipped us off a bit of Bert’s epi 201, where he chats with guest and fellow comic and soundcaster Zane Lamprey about the secrets of successful crowdfunding. Bert’s show is not the only soundcast to hit 200 episodes this week – big shout out to the Strange Times Show that also hit epi 200! Way to go Davian Dent, Kat Sorens, and Samantha Pett! Rex Rivetter, Private EyeWe’re definitely in a period of soundcasting where the well-produced narrative is beginning to blossom. Tyson Saner grabbed us a clip from Rex Rivetter, Private Eye, which the show description calls “a modern radio drama”. Set in 1955, it’s a hard-boiled P-I comic thriller, starring Randy Coule as Rex and series director Rhiannon McAfee as Jenny McIntosh. Epi8, which this clip is from, is called Triple Indemnity. (It’s actually part 2, but Tyson pulled this chunk because it features friend-of-Succotash Sabrina Charlie Miller (Changes In Latitudes) in the role of Luca. Mouth Time w/ReductressThe immensely popular site Reductress has been pumping out a soundcast with the great title of Mouth Time since March of this year. Tyson snipped us off a clip, featuring co-hosts Quenn and Div who “give you everything you expect from a women’s magazine in 2016.” (Tyson said he just HAD to finally check out the show because he’s been binge-listening to Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast on Stitcher and he says every ad he has heard has been for Mouth Time. This clip is from Epi74: “Cold Storage Facility in a Chicken Farm.” Check out more Mouthtime on iTunes, Stitcher, and iHeartRadio. And don’t forget that you can now find Succotash on iHeartRAdio, too, and YouTube! We don’t have a video component tho the show, but you can listen to us anyway! GIVING THANKS I wanted to be sure to thank those of you who have been using the Amazon banner at the top of the page on our http://SuccotashShow.com homepage. We just got a check for $46 bucks and change from our skim off the top the past couple of months, which covers a month and a half of web hosting. I really appreciate it. Keep on shopping – I mean, c’mon, it’s time for Christmas, right? Also, I know that a lot of soundcasts are using Patreon these days, but if you want to help Succotash and cut out the middle man, simply use the Donate button on our homesite. In exchange, I’ll mention your name here on the show, plug whatever you want AND I’ll send you…something. I don’t know what — I’ve got all kinds of merch from the Succotashery kicking around Studio P — so I’ll scoop something up and send it to you if you pass along a snailmail address when you donate. That's going to do it for Epi143. Please remember to pass the Succotash which is even easier now — let friends, family and absolute strangers know they can find us not only through our homesite and iTunes, Stitcher, and SoundCloud, but we're also now on the Laughable app, iHeartRadio, and even on YouTube! — Marc Hershon
