Marissa Vosper: Co-Founder of Negative Underwear

Marissa Vosper is the co-founder of the cult-favorite intimates brand Negative Underwear. She studied political science and Spanish in college and started off her career in brand consulting. Vosper worked at two prestigious global branding agencies, learning the ins and outs of building a successful brand identity. But after eight years in the industry, she knew it wasn't where she wanted to stay. She and her college friend—and eventual co-founder—Lauren Schwab began to think: What if they could pursue careers in fashion, an industry they had always loved but never felt was accessible or possible for them? They began taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and soon realized that the lingerie industry was ripe for disruption. After four years of research and development, they launched Negative Underwear in 2014—a line of high-quality, minimalist intimates without all the bells and whistles that were popular at the time. The brand was an instant hit; their first run sold out in two weeks. Over the last 10 years, Marissa has grown the brand without any outside investment, expanding into new categories like sleepwear and loungewear.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How do you transform a 100-year-old institution into a modern hub for innovation and technology while staying true to its legacy?  In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I'm joined by Dr. Joyce Brown, the first woman and first African American president of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). With 26 years of leadership, Dr. Brown has revolutionized this globally renowned institution, blending technology and creativity to shape the future of fashion education. Dr. Brown shares how she took over an antiquated institution in 1998 and brought it into the modern era, quadrupling the use of technology in teaching and making FIT a center for innovation and entrepreneurship. At the heart of this transformation is the DTech Lab, FIT's on-campus innovation hub, where students collaborate with brands like Adidas, Netflix, and Girl Scouts to solve real-world challenges. From redesigning Girl Scouts uniforms to using IBM Watson for brand DNA analysis with Tommy Hilfiger, these projects highlight how FIT bridges the gap between education and industry. We also explore FIT's emphasis on sustainability and bio-design, where students work with materials like mycelium and kombucha to create sustainable fibers, and even maintain a natural dye garden for eco-friendly fabric coloring. Dr. Brown discusses how FIT has adapted to major global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice movements, by creating safe spaces for dialogue and encouraging students to express their concerns through their creative work. This episode offers a fascinating inside look at how FIT prepares the next generation of fashion professionals by integrating technology, sustainability, and innovation into its curriculum. Whether you're interested in the intersection of fashion and technology or the future of education, this conversation with Dr. Joyce Brown will leave you inspired. How do you see technology shaping the future of education and creative industries? Join the conversation and share your thoughts!

In a new lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of New York, April Lampos has come forward with accusations against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, alleging he drugged and sexually assaulted her in the 1990s. This marks the sixth woman to file assault claims against the hip-hop mogul. Lampos, a former student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), detailed in the lawsuit four “terrifying sexual encounters” with Combs. She claimed these incidents occurred after they met in 1994 while she was pursuing her studies in New York City. Lampos accused Combs of forcing her to take ecstasy and engage in sexual acts with him and his then-girlfriend, Kim Porter. She also alleged retaliation from Porter, which led to Lampos losing her job. According to the lawsuit, their first “horrific” encounter happened in 1995 when Combs “pressured” Lampos to drink at a bar in New York City before taking her to his hotel, where he allegedly raped her despite her attempts to resist. Following this incident, Lampos claimed Combs sent her “gifts, cards, and flowers” and leveraged his power in the music industry to lure her back. She recounted another assault where Combs “yanked her down to her knees” and forced her to perform oral sex on him in front of a parking garage attendant. Lampos described a relationship characterized by Combs's manipulation and threats. She said he used his connections and influence in the music industry to ensure her compliance with his demands. A particularly distressing encounter occurred in 1996 when Combs allegedly forced Lampos and Porter to take ecstasy at his Manhattan apartment. Despite her vocal opposition, Combs “demanded” that Porter engage in sexual acts with Lampos, eventually leading to another alleged rape by Combs. The lawsuit also detailed Lampos's final encounter with Combs around the end of 2000 or early 2001. After ending things with him in 1998, she ran into him at Rockefeller Center, where he expressed a desire to reconnect. Lampos eventually allowed him to visit her apartment, where he allegedly assaulted her again. Lampos claimed that Combs's behavior had not changed, and she asked him to leave her apartment, knowing he was in a relationship with Jennifer Lopez at the time. Lampos is seeking unspecified damages for battery, sexual assault, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and violation of the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law. Representatives for Combs and Lampos's attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment from PEOPLE. These allegations come on the heels of similar claims by Combs's ex, Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, who released a statement following the publication of a video showing her being physically abused by Combs in 2016. “Domestic Violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become. With a lot of hard work, I am better today, but I will always be recovering from the past,” she wrote. Combs is currently facing multiple sexual assault and harassment lawsuits from four other women and one man, adding to the growing legal challenges confronting the music and business mogul. As the legal proceedings unfold, these allegations bring to light a troubling pattern of behavior alleged against Sean 'Diddy' Combs. The claims made by April Lampos contribute to the broader narrative of abuse and misconduct surrounding the high-profile figure, emphasizing the ongoing impact of these serious accusations on the victims involved. Daniel Torjman is beautiful.   And so is his incredible store 18 Waits.   Two years ago I was walking down Queen Street West in Toronto and I noticed a couple nice men's shirts in a window and stepped inside. I was greeted by an old hardwood floor, jazz playing on a record, classic literature on display, and an incredibly curated assortment of shirts, coats, bandanas, and hats. I started chatting with owner (tailor! captain!) Daniel Torjman and discovered we were the same age and he was also a fairly new dad trying to figure it all out.   Dan went down to New York and was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). He then worked as a production manager for Rogan where he helped open their flagship store in TriBeCa. When he came back to Canada, he turned his attention to conceptualizing 18 Waits which emphasizes quality material and craftsmanship with incredible hand-made, local-made clothes. Every item even has a handwritten number on the tag which shows how many kilometers away from the shop the clothes were made!   I bought a splashy floral shirt and began wearing it to my speeches. Now not an event goes by without someone asking me where I got it. I always tell them to visit Dan and point them to 18waits.com. The clothes are classic, strong, and durable and there's a patch inside every piece of clothing that reads: “Wear Well. Enjoy. Love. Destroy.”   Are you ready to hang out on a couch with me and Dan? I hope so because I promise you are in for a treat.   We are going to talk about things like: what does it mean to be genuine in a phony world? How should we enjoy the finer things in life without actually being precious with them? How do we think about searching for truth today? How should we think about where to buy our clothes? What helps create the cultural fiber of a city? What are the benefits of intergenerational friendships? Why should we let our teens go on road trips across continents? How do we become more … us? How do we encourage our kids to find themselves in a digital world that constantly pushes us towards the mean? How do we think about our comfort zones when it comes to fashion and ourselves?   Come on in and let's flip the page into Chapter 94 now…   What You'll Learn: How do you create atmosphere and community in a clothing store? What does it mean to be genuine? How should we enjoy the precious things in life without being precious? What is a laryngectomy? How can we learn to reflect positively after a dramatic event? How do we search for truth? How should we think about where to buy our clothes? Why does globalization engender distrust? What is the cultural fibre of a city? Why is it so important to spread our dollars around? Why should you not partake in trends? What's it like to meet The Rolling Stones? What are the benefits of intergenerational friendships? How are long and successful  careers sustained? What is the difference between business values and life values? How did LSD experimentation in the 1960s impact music and culture? Why should we let our teenage kids go on road trips? Why was it better to grow up without cell phones? Why is the everyday so beautiful? How can we become more us? How can we encourage our kids to find themselves in a digital world? Why are vinyl records and their liner notes so much richer in content? Why is the number 18 important in the Jewish tradition? How can people learn to wear fashion accessories comfortably? How do books paint pictures? What is the power of a genuine moment? Why don't we do high school reunions anymore? YOUR SEXUALITY IS YOUR POWER. We're so excited to have Certified Tantra, Love and Relationship Coach, Sarrah Rose on our show today. Sarrah advocates for how self-love and healing are necessary for both men and women to heal their relationship with their sexuality. The path to promote a more sex positive culture has NOT been easy and she opens up about this with her upbringing and relational trauma. Let's dive in and find out about these other healing modalities and simply talk about sex. [3:14] Who Is Sarrah Rose? Sarrah explains how a yoga class at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) led her to tantra and its role in releasing emotional trauma inhibiting us from fully stepping into our sexual identities.  [5:11] Misconceptions of Sexuality. Sarrah explains that these misconceptions are gender dependent. Men and women sex is bad or dangerous, or oppsite conditioning in having. Women sex is bad, can't display sexuality. Conditioning to make sexual trauma through, sets a very ripe stage for people to experience a lot of sexual abuse and trauma. Sex negative society [8:00] Sex-Negative Culture. When we shove down our sexuality, which is a part of our biology, the more thwarted and fearful it becomes.  The lack of conversations around sex lead to misconceptions about what are sexuality is supposed to be like. Sarrah emphasizes how self-love is where we can begin in promoting a more sex-positive culture [12:51] Role of the Primal Brain. We dive into a little how our feelings around sex being safe is rooted in trauma stored in the primal brain, internal resistance [17:56] Tantra and Shadow Work. Sarrah and Nina share their own trauma with infidelity and development of performance anxiety. Sarrah explains how shadow work and tantra were two main healing modalities to bring the repressed parts of herself back to our consciousness to integrate and heal them. [25:00] Lacking Sexual Confidence Impacting More Than We Think. Sarrah explains how lack of intimacy or sexual confidence impacts our self actualization in other areas of our lives. She explains this impact through utilizing the chakra system and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. [30:00] What is Tantra? We try to break the taboo around tantra as we ask Sarrah to explain what this is, it's origins in India, as well as the difference between Classical and Neo-Tantra. [33:25] 4 Tantric Basics To Begin Healing. Sarrah dives into how to breath, sound, movement and focus are used and how putting these four pieces together expands your sexual energy.  We jaw drop about generating how movement and manipulation of energy can generate energy orgasms...WHAT THE WHAT! [41:21] Sex Magic. This lovely, empowering  practice that Sarrah describes helps us define the identity we want to show up in the bedroom and further define what we want to experience. [46:00] Building Sexual Confidence and Consent is SEXY. We discuss how using our voice is a big empowering step forward, especially with consent and how changing our mindset to be wealthy with our sexual energy. This all begins with healing our relationship sexually [1:02:00] What Was Sarrah's Be You Not Them Moment? The question we ask all our guests on the Be You Not Them podcast.  We hope that Sarrah's experience and advocacy shed a little more light on what it means to be sexually empowered and how critical tantra is as a healing modality to get our sexual power back. Rebecca Moses knew from an early age she wanted to be a fashion designer. Graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), she landed her first job at Pierre Cardin and launched her own clothing line. On a trip to Italy to check out a factory, she fell in love with the owner. For 20 years Moses lived and worked outside of Milan and raised her two boys. But when her husband died suddenly in 2010,  she tells CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour, her world turned “upside down.” Returning to New York City to raise her boys, she wrote a book (Rebecca Moses: A Life of Style https://amzn.to/3sYyC8k), and dove into painting, illustration and animations for organizations like the Fragrance foundation and Bergdorf Goodman. The pandemic was “a frightening time for the entire world,” she says. “My family in Italy was in a very bad way. I could hear the sirens of ambulances which drove me crazy.” Feeling “helpless” and like she had to do something, Moses went onto Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/rebeccamosesofficial/)  and asked women to share the stories of their lives during the pandemic. She offered to draw them. “Letters flew in—humorous, sad, inspirational from six continents.” Moses “painted like a mad woman and didn’t sleep.”  400 portraits later, her project which she calls the Stay Home Sisters is going strong. “These women come from all walks of life: there is diversity in backgrounds, religion, careers. What happened next is the women connected with each other and said, ‘you’re not alone.’ It became a movement.”  Moses is still taking entries! Some of the series will be shown at the Guggenheim and the portraits of nurses will be touring a hospital. “This past year witnessed lost of people revaluation gather lives,” Moses says. “Ask yourself, ‘is this the life I want to live?’"

BUSINESS BUILDING INSIGHTSInvest in education about a topic that interests you and see if there’s an opportunity to create a business out of it. You can identify and gain access to needed resources by being in person with people who share the same passion as you do. They may hold the missing piece of information that will motivate you to get started. Don’t let the fact that there are other products out there similar to yours deter you from starting your business. There’s a way to make it unique. There’s a way to make it yours. Keep it simple when testing your products. Limit your products and variations as you start out. You can add to them later. Welcome feedback from potential customers to understand the receptivity and interest in your product. Cultivate relationships to get the word out for your product. (ep 3) How Can I Transform My Life by Experiencing Other Cultures? With Asanyah Davidson- Part 2In this episode of Collective Drift we sat down with Asanyah Davidson, child of the world, Fashion Designer, and educator. Asanyah is Jamaican born, American raised, and has lived in West Africa. She is the founding director at the Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College, she has her own fashion line Circa24. We had a really fun conversation on a wide range of topics from being Jamaican, being vegan, living in West Africa, the influence of her European fashion teacher, mentoring and more.During part two of our interview with Asanyah Davidson the conversation goes a little deeper. Asanyah talks about how having a diverse group of mentors helped her development. Then she discusses the people; cultures; schools such as Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) in Miami , the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC, and studying at Polimoda in Florence, Italy; and living in different countries influenced her as a fashion designer. Asanyah goes in depth about her time in Nigeria and Ghana. Her time there gave her a greater appreciation and understanding of textiles and the work behind them. This period in her life greatly influenced her career as a fashion designer. She will teach us about shibori, Adire, Ashoke, and Kente textiles. Asanyah learned about the significance of these fabrics and in this conversation you will learn the difference between what is and what isn’t real African fabric. Through this we delve into her viewpoint on cultural appropriation. How people think Ankara fabric is African fabric but it actually Dutch. Asanyah wants you to know what you are actually wearing so that you can truly appreciate it rather than appropriate it. All of these topics reflect how the importance of leaving your home country to understand the world better. If you disagree with Asanyah she says you can feel free to contact her. Asanyah talks about the similarities she noticed of African women and Jamaican women. She reminisces about the forever young spirit of African people, about partying with people of all ages and drinking champagne on the dance floor. We talk about her travels to South Africa and the importance of living in the moment. This was an important lesson from her travel. We then of course talk about Asanyah’s two favorite city’s Accra, Ghana and Siem Riep, Cambodia. She adores both of the cities because of how easy it is to get around. She tells us about a great Mexican restaurant in Siem Riep, yes, you heard me right - a Mexican restaurant. Getting a traditional bamboo tattoo while in Cambodia. And she talks about nightlife in Accra, which lead us to talking about how she went to the Guinness Beer factory in Ireland and beer culture around the world. Of course we circle back to Asanyah’s favorite places in Miami, Broward County AKA Greater Fort Lauderdale, and even West Florida. We finalize the conversation with Asanyah’s question for all women - “How are you dealing with life?” and her powerful definition of what a woman is.Collective Drift: Instagram: @CollectiveDrift Facebook.com/CollectiveDrift Find this episode on the CollectiveDrift.com/podcast-blog to get the links to all of Asanyah's favorite places.I'm Erica Vernet Knowles, a Miami native, an international traveler, and a culture enthusiast. In this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by author and survivor, Larry Ruhl. Larry’s book, Breaking the Ruhl’s, is his story as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Throughout the book he faces the challenging questions. “Is it truly possible to move through the shame I carry every day? Can I have a full life without depending on mind-numbing drugs and alcohol? And the most difficult question of all: Do I tell? But how do I tell? Who do I tell? What happens if I do tell?” Larry Ruhl serves as a board member for Taking Back Ourselves, which facilitates weekends of recovery for female survivors of sexual abuse, and is a registered speaker with the RAINN network (Rape Abuse Incest National Network). He previously served as a board member at Male Survivor. He also spoke at colleges and retreats to increase awareness of sexual abuse against men and boys. Today he shares his story publicly to spread awareness and to help others shed the shame and stigma associated with sexual abuse. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), with a degree in Display & Exhibit Design, and worked as a creative director at a textile firm for ten years until opening his own home furnishings/interior design business in 2004. He works as an artist and designer in the Hudson Valley. During my chat with Larry we cover topics including: This memoir is so personal and the story is so painful. How did you find the strength to share your story? Did writing it help you heal? When did you first realize that what was happening in your household was not only not normal, but was physical, emotional, and sexual abuse? You talk about how you’ve found a way to forgive your parents, but that you’ll never forget what happened. Can you speak to that? You’re no longer in contact with your parents, but you are close with your sister, who still lives with them. Can you talk about how you decided to move forward with this book? Now that the book has been released, how has it impacted your healing journey, your relationships, and your life as a whole? Larry shares openly and vulnerably about his life and struggles, and offers such hope and encouragement during our conversation that you can help but be inspired by his bravery and the bravery of all who speak out and refuse to be silent. I’m so honored to have had the opportunity to talk to this incredible survivor and I look forward to bringing him back on the podcast in the future to talk more about his story. Thank you again Larry for your book, your message of hope, and your continued desire to reach those all who have survived the trauma of abuse.
