Baltimore native Nick Pikounis is the bar manager and beverage director of the tropical rum bar Pink Flamingo, which not only gets its name from its theme but also from local legend John Waters. It's surprising that someone who learned craft cocktails at a spot that wouldn't allow the use of citrus would now commandeer a place that revels in them - and he steered them right into a James Beard nomination. He also loves DJ culture, making some attempts in the electronic world after a brief childhood stint in clarinet and piano. When your school trips involve fishing Lough Melvin and the Kylemore system in Connemara, there is a good chance you might get handy at fishing. This was obviously the case with Sammy McGowan and no doubt helped him to burst on to the Irish Team as a 19-year-old on Loch Leven in Scotland. Sammy won top Irish rod on this first cap and went on to earn many more international caps while still in his twenties. Hailing from Co. Down, Sammy is well known on the Irish fly fishing scene. He took a step back for a while from the competition fishing in latter years but hopes to get back to it again. Sammy turned his attention to dying and sourcing fly tying materials. In what started out as a hobby, it grew and grew for him and since Covid, has now become his main job, running his business, Irish Fly Supplies. For more, visit https://irish-fly-supplies.square.site/For this episode Tom is joined by Mike Keady and they look back at how the mayfly fared, and talk to Sammy about his early years, competition fishing, fly tying materials, his love of Lough Neagh and, very interestingly, a Pink Flamingo which has nothing to do with fly-tying materials! This week on News Weakly, Sami Shah looks at the stories Australia keeps turning into culture wars instead of solving. The death of Kumanjayi Little Baby reignites debate around Indigenous communities, systemic neglect, Welcome to Country ceremonies, and the country's ongoing inability to confront its own contradictions. Sami explores the idea of the “Pink Flamingo”: the national dysfunction everyone sees but nobody meaningfully addresses.Meanwhile, the Liberal Party responds to electoral collapse by considering a return to Tony Abbott, because apparently the answer to political failure is expired yoghurt conservatism. And in journalism, former Age editor Michael Gawenda and writer Jeff Sparrow collide in a debate over objectivity, activism, and whether journalists still know the difference between reporting facts and performing politics online. All that, and more.Sami Shah is a multi-award-winning comedian, writer, journalist, and broadcaster. For more: http://thesamishah.comTheme music 'Historic Anticipation' by Paul MottramThis podcast is written, hosted, and produced by Sami Shah. Escuchar audio

We start with the 2005 doc MIDNIGHT MOVIES: FROM THE MARGINS TO THE MAINSTREAM (2005) which documents the origins of midnight cult cinema starting with – of course – EL TOPO, and then moving onto PINK FLAMINGOS, THE HARDER THEY COME, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and more! Featuring interviews with John Waters, David Lynch, George Romero and (of course) Alejandro Jodorowsky. Next up is the 2007 documentary MOEBIUS REDUX: A LIFE IN PICTURES tracing the career of Jean “Moebius” Giraud, and featuring an impressive collection of his collaborators and admirers. Then we finish up with the unique, revealing documentary MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN from 2014 which follows director (and Jodorowsky acolyte) Nicolas Winding Refn as he goes through a depressive episode while making his film ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Legendary filmmaker and writer John Waters joins us for a reading and conversation spanning the arc of his remarkable career, in celebration of the new reissue of his classic early screenplays, with The New Yorker's Michael Schulman. From the shocking Pink Flamingos, which established him as a household name and set a new bar for cinematic filth, to Hairspray, the sweetly triumphant story of a dance-crazy teen in 1960s Baltimore — later adapted into a smash hit Tony Award-winning musical — John Waters' films redefined the art of trash in the '70s and '80s, and in the process blew open the doors of modern independent film. And as his early screenplays attest, Waters has long been more than filmmaker — he is a towering literary filth artist, a writer of radical and subversive wit; in other words, an intellectual in reverse. In this reading and conversation covering Waters' earliest days as a filmmaker in Baltimore to his status as the auteur king of exploitation films made for art theaters, we celebrate the entire arc of Waters' singular career, to honor the reissue of six of Waters' early screenplays — Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Flamingos Forever, and Hairspray.
"I may be a drape, but I love your granddaughter. And if that's a crime, I'll stand convicted, ma'am." We watched "Cry-Baby", directed by John Waters, with our friend and rockabilly expert Janelle, and there's nothing the matter with our faces - we've got character! Listen, John Waters movies are camp, trash, queer, drag, cinema classics, and "Cry-Baby" is a prime example. Johnny Depp broke out of TV jail (it was the late 80's/early 90's) and jumped onto the big screen in the first of his quirky character choices playing Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker. Cry-Baby and his gang of "drapes" are played by the coolest group of weirdos this side of "Pink Flamingos." We spend a good deal gushing over how cool the gang is, including a sizable moment dissecting Traci Lords' voluminous hairdo. Waters' knack for casting is ever-present, featuring the likes of Susan Tyrell, Iggy Pop, Joe Dallesandro, Troy Donahue, and the feature debut of one Patricia Hearst. Get transported with us to Baltimore of the early 1960's and watch Johnny Depp in 501's (and a good portion in just tighty-whities) strut around with juvenile delinquents, squares, and a cast of colorful outcasts. If you're a black sheep/cycle breaker with a purpose - guided to create, to run a business, to have your own family, or *something* that you're actualizing outside of yourself, this episode is for you.We often feel so forgotten or isolated on our journey of creation, and this is a massive reminder from my real life that just because you may not see all the evidence yet, you are still making waves.I've been guided to document and share my business journey recently. I recorded this episode in early September, and for months I've been feeling like something is brewing. This episode was recorded prior to me finding out about the residency, and I know even more will continue to unfold. If you're ready to break the generational curse of unworthiness, I created The Worthiness Blueprint to guide you through mind-, body-, and spirit-led activations to raise your self-worth today.Support my journey to attending a writer's residency in France by booking a coaching session or tarot reading - use code RESIDENCY for 50% off my 1:1 services at www.blacksheepexperience.comLove you! In the final part of our three part 2025 series, Is This Cinema?, we look at the 2010 boundary pushing shocking controversial A SERBIAN FILM co-wri & directed by Srdjan Spasojevic which has its advocates like moviemaker Eli Roth and its detractors (many many others). Actor, moviemaker, musician Andras Jones (who did NOT see the movie) and Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill (who did) use the movie (which did play big festivals around the world) as the launching point for the third part of their conversation about what actually defines cinema. Andras and Craig work to dig down on what the basic elements are that define cinema. Citizen Kane and Pink Flamingos both come up. And surprisingly Andras and Craig do ultimately come to a definition that works for both of them.
Seriously. We're asking. Our philosophers ponder the role of the manager: what qualities are the most important? Why have Kaplar and Melvin both failed to get this team over the mediocrity hump? Are they just filling out the the lineup card incorrectly? On the cocktail side of things Ben is drinking a Proto-Punch while Matthew is drinking a Pink Flamingo. Recipes below.Proto-Punch1 1/2 oz Congac1 1/2 oz Bourbon1 oz Lemon juice2 oz of Oleo Saccharum syrup (or less, try less)4 oz of club sodaCombine the congac, bourbon, lemon juice and oleo saccharum syrup in a highball with no ice. Stir well to combine. Add ice and top with the club soda. You can also scale this up to larger quantities by keeping the ratios the same, but in that case you should combine and pre-chill the first four ingredients. When you're ready to serve have guests or your future self add the club soda themselves.Pink Flamingo1 1/2 oz White Rum1/2 oz Dark Rum1 oz Grapefruit Juice1/2 oz Lime Juice1/2 oz Plum Syrup (or Grenadine)1/4 oz Demerara Syrup (if plum syrup is too tart)Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass.
We're pulling back the curtain on one of modern horror's most unforgettable new icons: Aunt Gladys from Zach Cregger's smash hit Weapons. Christina is joined by makeup department head Leo Satkovich and special makeup effects designer Jason Collins, the brilliant team behind her terrifying transformation. They explore how Aunt Gladys was brought to life: from drawing inspiration in Cindy Sherman's photography and John Waters' Pink Flamingos to perfecting the haunting look worn and played to perfection by Amy Madigan. They dig into the gory details — THAT potato peeler, wrangling a mob of kids, and much more. The conversation even dares to imagine a prequel Aunt Gladys, picturing a younger version in all her unsettling glory. And of course, the artists share exclusive Halloween costume tips straight from their own toolkit. Listen now! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week we begin a mini-series on the Pope of Trash himself, John Waters. First up, the shocking Pink Flamingos. Look, I could list all the triggers in this film, but um, if you can think of something that may offend or defile you, it's there. Buyer Beware. Join us as we ponder the question; is there some freeing divinity to be found through extreme cinema? Who knows, but there's certainly Divine. Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas

Writer, director, actor, and artist John Waters has been making avant-garde cinema since the 1960s. His movies have pushed boundaries and shocked audiences with their wild characters and surreal storylines, even as they offer piercing insights into popular American culture and society. While he experienced mainstream crossover success by the 1980s and into the 2000s, and has been embraced by many in the entertainment industry, John Waters is inherently an outsider –- and he wouldn't have it any other way. He is a unique, visionary queer voice in American cinema. So for one of our 2025 Pride specials, the Great Pop Culture Debate looks back on 8 of The Pope of Trash's most notable movies and attempts to name the Best John Waters Film. Movies discussed: Hairspray (1988), Serial Mom (1994), Pink Flamingos (1972), Cry-Baby (1990), Female Trouble (1974), Mondo Trasho (1969), Polyester (1981), Pecker (1998). Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelist Jonny Minogue, and special guests Erin Marlow from the It's a Fandom Thing podcast, and Joshua Grannell AKA Peaches Christ, alternative drag icon and host of the Midnight Mass podcast, as they discuss 8 of the most notorious John Waters films. Abby's husband says she can't wear a specific dress to a wedding because it's white...but Abby says it's yellow. Alyssa's College of Knowledge! Trust forms the foundation of every successful client-cleaner relationship, but what happens when that trust is deliberately tested? Pink flamingos under rugs, coins beneath trash cans, and objects hidden in unexpected places aren't random occurrences—they're "little red herrings," deliberately placed by clients to verify your cleaning thoroughness. This growing trend, inspired by viral TikTok videos, represents a troubling shift in client attitudes toward cleaning professionals. As business owners who've built systems designed to deliver consistent quality, encountering these tests feels disrespectful and undermines the professional relationship we work hard to establish.Drawing from decades of experience in retail quality control and professional cleaning services, we explore effective ways to handle these situations with grace. Whether you choose to gather all test items in a visible location, document them with photos, or directly address the behavior, maintaining your dignity while setting appropriate boundaries is crucial. For persistent testers, implementing substantial price increases often helps clients reconsider their approach—or self-select out of your service roster. The conversation extends beyond simple cleaning techniques to the fundamental respect that should exist in any service relationship. After all, would these clients appreciate someone intentionally making their own workplace responsibilities more difficult? Probably not.Have you encountered the little red herring phenomenon in your cleaning business? We'd love to hear your experiences and how you've navigated these challenging client situations. Share your thoughts in the comments, and remember: the right clients will trust your professionalism without setting traps to prove it.Send us a text Up your cleaning game, join over 6000 Cleaning Business Owners most of whom are located here in the United States. Richies, for Pride Month we bring you a true hero to - and champion of - the queer community. A filmmaker who brings an oddball sensibility and counter-culture vibe to the mainstream. Director John Waters has been marching to the beat of his own drum since he was little boy, doing twisted puppet shows at birthday parties and drawing with black crayons. Born and raised in a Baltimore suburb, John knows early on that he's different. And he embraces it. His early films like “Pink Flamingos” are so deliberately gross and funny that they earn him the nickname “The Pope of Trash.” But behind the shock value is a real artist. He eases his way into the mainstream flicks like “Polyester” and then “Hairspray.” John Waters' lasting film legacy is to embrace and celebrate society's weirdos. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss. An odd married couple take on Divine, an infamous Baltimore criminal figure, in an effort to take her persona as the "Filthiest Person Alive" away from her.Pink Flamingos is this year's Fucked Up February finale and it certainly has a cult following for a reason. This movie, while it may have a comedic appeal to certain audiences, does have several controversial and disturbing scenes that land it in Fucked Up February. The film is directed by John Waters and stars actor and drag queen, Divine. As the characters go out of their way to be "filthy", they do live up to the word in every possible way with perverse acts and evil plots.
