Did you know that the humble potato owes its very existence, and its global success as a food staple to an ancient genetic mash-up? A recent study in the journal Cell of over 100 wild and cultivated potato genomes has revealed a fascinating secret about the potato family tree. The beloved spud and its 107 wild relatives all belong to a plant group called Petota. What sets Petota apart is its ability to grow underground tubers, the very organs we eat. But where did this tuber-making trait come from? Turns out, millions of years ago, two very different wild plant lineages, one similar to tomatoes and another that doesn't make tubers at all crossed paths. Somewhere in the high mountains of South America, their genetic material combined through hybridization, creating a brand-new lineage: Petota. This ancient hybrid inherited just the right mix of genes to develop tubers, enabling these plants to store nutrients underground and survive tough climates. Scientists now believe that this innovative tuber-forming ability helped Petota rapidly diversify into over 100 species, adapting to everything from dry tropical forests to cold, high-altitude meadows. In fact, this ancient hybrid lineage shows faster species evolution than its parent lineages, highlighting how powerful hybridization can be in driving plant diversity. Even more impressive? The very genes responsible for making tubers like SP6A and IT1 were inherited from each parent in a sort of genetic collaboration. Modern genetic experiments show these hybrid genes are essential for tuber development and are still active in today's potatoes. So, next time you mash, bake, or roast a potato, remember it's not just a vegetable. It's the product of an ancient botanical tomato love story that changed the course of agricultural history. Another is tired of golf coverage that feels more like a Rory McIlroy documentary than a major tournament. There's frustration over constant interruptions during podcast me-time, and a red-eye flight disaster caused by a tray table that cannot handle its own airline cup. Hello to you listening in Chandler, Arizona!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe it's true and maybe it isn't but the old ones say that once there was a village of people so stingy and tight-fisted that they hid whatever they had so that their friends and neighbors wouldn't know who had what and want it for themselves. They even hid their food from one another even though there was plenty to go around. One day a traveler pulling a small wagon wanders into the village. He's been on the road for many days and has no food left to eat. He goes from door to door asking for a bit of bread, of cheese, maybe an apple; but at each door he's turned away: We have nothing here! Stop begging! Leave us alone! The traveler returns to his wagon, takes out a large kettle, sets it down in the village square and builds a fire under the kettle. He adds water from the well and a large stone taken from a pocket in his coat.Of course the villagers are curious, peering out of their windows, what's this fellow up to anyway? A child sent out to ask what the traveler is doing is told, "I'm making stone soup.” and this he repeats to the villagers who are edging closer to the traveler and his kettleHe's smacking his lips in anticipation. "It's almost ready, he says, but to make a really good stone soup it could use some cabbage." A villager returns with a cabbage for the kettle. The butcher, not to be outdone by his neighbor adds some choice cuts of meat. Other villagers rush home and return with food from their own gardens--potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, and spices.Soon the soup in the big kettle was bubbling and fragrant. The traveler scooped the stone out of the kettle, tucked it back in his coat pocket, and served the soup to one and all.In time the traveler went on his way pulling his wagon with his kettle and the stone back in his pocket; but he left behind a story and the recipe for stone soup that's made and shared to this very day.Thank you for listening! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" The Pursuit of Regenerative Potatoes in Canada

Farmers and agronomists have a lot on their plate just to produce a profitable crop every year. So what happens when their buyers start requesting they also change practices to move in a more regenerative direction? Today we hear Emily, an agronomist for a large farm in Alberta, Canada, and Syngenta's Tara McCaughey, about the quest to grow a more regenerative potato.“ It's very different from what we're used to. We have somebody who comes here, sells us a product, we see the results. It's instant ROI. With a lot of these practices, it's gonna cost you extra time and people, but you don't necessarily get that right back, that harvest. This is more of a long game. So trying to justify that when you're convincing people to make a change. I think that's an additional barrier is that you might not see your yield increase year one. And that's just a different mindset shift from what we're used to in ag I think.” - Emily, Agronomist in Alberta, CanadaEmily is an agronomist for a very large farming operation in Alberta, Canada. She's been doing that for about five years and has an additional 15 years as agronomist, mostly working for a large french fry manufacturer. Emily recently traveled the world as a Nuffield Scholar studying regenerative agriculture practices in potato production systems.Tara has been with Syngenta for a number of years in various capacities, but currently she is the Head of Technology Solutions in Sustainable Ag Function. So her team ensures that technology, including chemistry, biological crop input products, as well as digital ag solution technologies are market-ready and supported once they're in the market with farmer customers. This Week on Soil Sense:Meet Emily, an agronomist in Alberta, and Tara McCaughey,  Head of Technology Solutions in Sustainable Ag at Syngenta Canada Discover what's working when it comes to implementing regenerative farming practices in potato cropping systemsConsider why building soil health is a long term investment instead of a product that can offer clear and instant return on investment (ROI)Listen to how agronomists like Emily work with other stakeholders to find prudent ways to implement changesThe  Soil Sense podcast is for those that believe building healthier soils is not just a prescription, but rather a pursuit. On this show, we unpack the way farmers collaborate to build healthier soils and adapt systems to work on their farm for both sustainability and profitability.Listen to the full season here: https://www.syngenta.com/agriculture/sustainable-agriculture/soil-health/soil-sense-podcast Thank you to Syngenta for sponsoring this season of the Soil Sense podcast. In this episode, social media chef and queen of potatoes, Poppy O'Toole, explores the world of her favourite ingredient, the Potato. Last year, Poppy appeared on Mastermind, choosing the history of the potato as her specialist subject. Let's just say… it didn't quite go to plan. So now, she's joining the team at The Food Programme to fill in the gaps in her knowledge.Along the way, she meets historian Professor Rebecca Earle from the University of Warwick, who explains how potatoes travelled from the Andes to Europe. She visits Lima, a Peruvian restaurant in London, where she speaks with sous chef William Coz about how potatoes remain central to Peruvian cuisine. Dr Stef de Haan from the International Potato Center shares how Peru continues to cultivate thousands of potato varieties. In Suffolk, Poppy visits James Foskett's farm to discover how he grows both organic and conventional potatoes. And she speaks with Dr Jean Beagle Ristaino—known by some as “the Sherlock of Spuds”—about her work investigating the pathogen behind the Irish Potato Famine. The programme includes archive from Mastermind which is co-produced for BBC 2 by Hindsight and Hat Trick.Presented by Poppy O'Toole Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Natalie Donovan
