Today, on Episode #136 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're continuing our theme of rest by exploring why we may have trouble resting in our Me Now Years.Part of the problem is that we sometimes mix up the terms “relax” and “rest.”For example, you may relax at the end of the day by:Reading a bookWatching TVScrolling social mediaBut are you really “resting?”Sure, you're likely sitting or lying down. But your eyes are working - likely straining to read or watch a screen - and your mind is moving. Not super restful, after all. At least, not for me.That is not to say you can't do these things with your leisure time. But be careful that you don't get sucked into the activity and wind up over-indulging.So, what does help you rest?A nap?A meditation?YogaA leisurely walk?Any of these, really, could be restful for your mind, body and spirit.Start experimenting with what works for you by delving into your dosha and how that factors in to your rest.Lorrie xoxoxMentioned in this episode:Banyan Botanicals Dosha QuizIn Ayurveda, the term “Prajñāparādha” (pronounced praj-nyah-pah-rah-dha) refers to “the crime against wisdom” or “mistake of the intellect.” It describes the situation where an individual knowingly engages in behaviors or actions that are harmful, despite having the wisdom or awareness that they are not beneficial. Can we find meaning and pride in our ordinary lives? In this talk, Liên Shutt contrasts the extravagant events in our lives with the everyday moments and asks us to consider if we can drop our expectations of how things should be and instead allow them to exist just as they are. This is the definition of Buddhist wisdom or Prajña, which translates as "knowledge of things as they are."She quotes Sekkei Harada Roshi in "The Essence of Zen:""Things that we can see and hear do not exist because we believe they do; they exist apart from a person's thought. That which exists separately from the thoughts of the ego self... is the dharma." Liên helps us see that individuals and groups exist independent of whether or not we think they should. ______________Liên Shutt (she/they) is a priest lineage holder in the Shunryu Suzuki tradition. Born to a Buddhist family in Vietnam, she received her meditation training in the Insight and Soto Zen traditions in the U.S., Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. She was a founding member of the Buddhists of Color in 1998 and currently is the guiding teacher of Access to Zen, an inclusive, anti-oppression sangha and non-profit in the SF Bay Area. She lives on Ohlone land, currently called San Francisco, with her partner, exploring waterways and forests as often as they can. The Heart Sūtra is a key sutra in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Its Sanskrit title, Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya, can be translated as "The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom". The sutra famously states, "Form is empty" (śūnyatā). It is a condensed exposé on the Buddhist Mahayana teaching of the Two Truths doctrine, which says that ultimately all phenomena are sunyata, empty of an unchanging essence. This emptiness is a 'characteristic' of all phenomena, and not a transcendent reality, but also "empty" of an essence of its own. Specifically, it is a response to Sarvastivada teachings that "phenomena" or its constituents are real. Music by Maok - Inner Reflections and Infinite Forgiveness
We wanted to start our first episode with something that symbolizes creativity and something that represents the beginning of everything. We wanted it to be close to our existence and yet far away.In Indian tradition, the Prajapatis are often associated with creative energy and are considered the progenitors or creators of various beings and aspects of the universe. The term "Prajapati" is derived from the combination of two Sanskrit words: "Prajā," which means "creatures" or "progeny," and "pati," which means "lord" or "master." Therefore, Prajapatis are the lords or masters of creation and are responsible for the propagation and proliferation of life forms. The Prajapatis symbolize the creative energy that brings life and diversity into existence. They are essential figures in Hindu cosmology and are often depicted as sages or divine beings responsible for shaping the universe and its inhabitants. Their stories and lineage are woven into the rich tapestry of Indian mythology and religious beliefs. These venerable beings are associated with being still at mind and have imparted valuable knowledge through the eons. Even in our Spiritual purports, Creativity and procreativity are achieved through the same energy. This episode discusses Kashyapa, the last of the Prajapati's, and how he discovered the value of stillness for learning and creativity.Referenceshttps://www.valmiki.iitk.ac.in/https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/https://www.britannica.com/biography/Eratostheneshttps://www.constellation-guide.com/big-dipper/(edited)Encyclopedia BritannicaEratosthenes | Biography, Discoveries, Sieve, & FactsEratosthenes, Greek scientific writer, astronomer, and poet, who made the first measurement of the size of Earth for which any details are known. Nārada said, “O Brahmā of great intelligence, O eloquent one, please tell us what happened after Dakṣa went home with great delight.” Brahmā said, “Dakṣa Prajāpati returned with pleasure to his hermitage and began mental creations at my bidding. On seeing the creation not increasing in size, Dakṣa Prajāpati informed me, his father Brahmā.” Dakṣa said, “O Brahmā, lord of subjects, these subjects are not flourishing. They are conceived by me but they remain stationary. O lord of subjects, what shall I do? How can they flourish themselves? Please instruct me in the means thereof. I shall certainly create subjects.” Brahmā said, “O Dakṣa Prajāpati, listen to my weighty words and carry out the direction. Śiva will bless you with welfare. O lord of subjects, let Asiknī, the beautiful daughter of Pañcajana, the lord of five tribes, be taken by you as your consort. Indulging in sexual intercourse you can create subjects many in number in a beautiful woman like her.” Then, in order to procreate subjects by way of coitus, he married the daughter of Vīraṇa at my bidding. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shivadyuti/message
