With the changing season, it's time to close the garden down. Before the cold weather hits, drain and bring in outdoors hoses, clean and sharpen garden tools and start protecting plants for winter. Wrap young trees with plastic or wire fencing to about 2 feet up the trunk and a few inches below the ground, to protect the young bark from rodents and rabbits. Erect A-frame, snow barriers for shrubs planted near the house to avoid damage from falling snow and ice. And cover tender perennials, such as lavender, with wood chips in late November. Unfortunately, it's also time for me to say goodbye. After a 10-year-run, this is my last Connecticut Garden Journal post. I've enjoyed being part of Connecticut Public and appreciate all the people that made this show happen. Thanks to John Dankosky and Catie Talarski for believing in me 10 years ago to start the show. And to Tim Rasmussen for having me host a series of gardening TV shows during Covid where we won a Regional Emmy. And, of course to all the people behind the scenes, such as Cat Pastor and Robyn Doyon-Aiken, who made the show happen each week. And special thanks to you listeners. For all the emails, questions and comments and greetings I received in person at garden club meetings, flower shows and garden conferences. It's been great connecting with such avid gardeners over the years. So for now, I'll hang up my garden tools, clean off my boots and close the garden shed. You may not be hearing me live anymore on the radio, but the past shows live on at Connecticut Public. Until we meet again, I'll be seeing you in the garden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you've listened this month, you know that we're celebrating Dads here in June and, specifically, we're talking with folks who were greatly influenced by their fathers. This week's guest is particularly intriguing because it can be fascinating when a son or daughter decides to follow in his or her father's footsteps...especially when that's in the media.Jim King was a legendary journalist, working for the Chicago Tribune and then a couple of radio stations before eventually helping to launch WQAD-TV up in the Quad Cities area -- and he had a couple of interesting stops in the middle. For nearly 40 years, Jim King's oldest son, Kris Ketz, has been a fixture at KMBC-TV and two of Jim's grandsons -- Kris' sons -- have followed in his footsteps...one in radio and one in TV.In case you're not familiar with Kris, here's part of his credentials: he is an Emmy-award winning anchor and investigative reporter, having captured a Midwest Emmy for best anchor in 2008. He also won in 1991 for an in-depth report on the influence of the Ku Klux Klan in the Kansas City area. He was nominated for a 2003 Emmy for best anchor, and nominated for a 2011 Regional Emmy award for “general assignment reporting.” In 2015 he was one of four local news anchors chosen to interview President Barack Obama in a one-on-one interview.Kris is a graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 18 as a weekend news anchor for radio station WQUA in Moline, Ill. He progressed to afternoon and morning anchor, until he became the station's news director. And in 1998, about a year before Jim King died unexpectedly, Kris and Jim co-anchored the Father's Day edition of KMBC 9 News at 10.Kris takes a swing at our Pregame Batting Practice and then discusses his dad's legacy, following in his footsteps, and being the father of two in the media. And much more.LINKS:For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, including the application process for current high school freshmen and sophomores, visit our website. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.

He would grow up to be awarded a National Sigma Delta Chi for Journalism at the National Press Club in Washington DC, two National Edward R Murrow awards and 31 Regional Emmy’s but while that may be how his career ended, it certainly did not start that way. One miracle after another led him out of poverty, out of neglect and into the unlikely world of broadcasting. And yet in spite of everything it was those early years that prepared him for what was to come. In episode one “The Beginning” you will hear why things started so badly and how far he would have to go. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radermedia/support

GABE MAYHAN DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY 310.795.8840 gabemayhan@me.com “Gabe Mayhan’s shot-inventive cinematography is a joy in every frame...” —James Wegg Review, on Lazy Eye “Gabe Mayhan did a wonderful job capturing both the expansive desert landscapes and the intimate moments, making great use of the light and the available space.” —Los Angeles Film Review on Lazy Eye “This film’s basically comprised of snapshot moments (and wonderful location photography) of their relationship’s start...” —Marvin Brown, on Lazy Eye “One Please is one of the most beautiful looking short films I have ever seen. It has production values to rival big studio Hollywood productions - and the feel of something truly special. The period details are wonderful, really evoking the mood and innocence of the era, enhanced with a strong, bright color palette." —Hickey’s House of Horrors Review If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakingconversations@mail.com Also, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=true Damien Swaby Social Media Links: Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/ Twitter twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src…erp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Aundrea Cline-Thomas is an Emmy award-winning reporter for NBC10 News in Philadelphia. When Aundrea is not working, you can find her in the community, volunteering, moderating, or hosting many events for non-profit organizations. Aundrea joined NBC10 news in September of 2015. In 2017 she won a Regional Emmy award for team coverage of the Delaware Prison Standoff. The same year the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists named her Broadcast Journalist of the Year. Prior to joining NBC10, Aundrea worked as the lead education reporter for four years at WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, where she won a regional Emmy award for Spot News. She also worked at News 14 Carolina in Charlotte for two years as a reporter and photographer, and WMGT, the NBC affiliate in Macon, Georgia. Aundrea has also been an instructor at the Carolina School of Broadcasting. Aundrea received a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Black Studies from Boston College, and a master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Maryland. Raised in a Maryland suburb of Washington D.C., Aundrea is the youngest of three children whose parents are originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa. Doing stuff scared: Did your path involve some moments of fear or even stage fright? Aundrea knows how it feels! She wanted to be a teacher until the 8th grade, when she realized that she would have to discipline unruly kids. That was enough to squelch the teacher dream! As a senior, she participated in a program at American University that pushed her in the direction of broadcast journalism, which turned out to be life-changing. For the first time, she was excited about something and felt that her gifts were truly being used. She loved the creative process of photography and editing, but the “in front of the camera” part was another story, and it didn’t come naturally for this introvert. She learned to “do stuff scared,” battle the stage fright, embrace the scary process and keep going. TWEET: “I feel like I’m still #teaching, but the classroom is different.” @AClineThomas Facing challenges: How do you respond when things are just unfair in your career? Aundrea faced many challenges, and she doesn’t know if they were more because of her gender or her race. She has always been determined to be a hard-worker---no matter what. She’s had to learn the hard lesson that she isn’t going to please everyone. Her best advice about these challenges is: “Go somewhere where what you have to offer is valued, and don’t take things personally. At the end of the day, it’s a business, and life experiences have shown that things usually work themselves out.” TWEET: “I face challenges, and sometimes I don’t know if it’s gender or race.” @AClineThomas “Eternal faith in myself and my ability”: Do you know what it feels like to work in a toxic environment? When you aren’t valued or offered the same promotions as someone else, you need to walk away in order to do what’s best for you. Aundrea left a job not knowing what was next or what she would do. It took months to find a job, and it wasn’t even what she wanted to do! It was a time that tested her faith and put her ego in check as she woke up every day to go to a job that she didn’t want to do. She had to have eternal faith in herself and her ability to make it through. The important lesson she learned was: “This isn’t the end or even the beginning, but it’s a part of the process.” TWEET: “I think of myself on a continuum, not at a destination.” @AClineThomas Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Dreams are no good if they stay in your head; you have to put action to it. If you’re not in school and want to be a journalist, then start learning the journalism industry. Figure out what skills are your strengths and create something right now.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:14] The Philly connection for a Maryland girl who originally wanted to be a teacher [6:47] An introvert who goes in front of the camera [8:17] Getting past the ugly mistakes, learning, and growing [10:42] Still learning and facing challenges [12:47] Having to say NO because of discrimination [17:37] “Betting on myself” [19:10] The interview tour: Buffalo, Nashville, and Charlotte [22:56] Going full circle back to education as a journalist [24:40] Giving back [26:07] Something surprising about broadcast journalism [29:09] Journalistic integrity, transparency, and the process [33:51] Where journalism is going in the future [36:09] Aundrea’s bucket list [37:08] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Aundrea onTwitter Aundrea on Instagram This episode is sponsored by patreon campaign supporters.
