Yet, so often we unconsciously place expectations, limits, or conditions as you might call them on how we love others or how we treat others, including ourselves.Unconditional love towards yourself means forgiveness.  It means turning towards yourself and offering tenderness and nurturing--physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically--even we you think you don't deserve it.  Even when you think you don't have the time or energy to offer that to yourself.Resources:Save your spot for {Self-} Love is in the Air Candlelight YogaGrab the full show notes and resources at www.cairnyogawellness.com/podcast67 and subscribe and listen wherever you catch your podcasts:

Too often, organizations believe that contracting more affordable and less expensive resources for a project will lead to better savings. Here at Tag1 Consulting, we've in fact discovered that the opposite is true: Hiring cheaper often leads to worse results. Though it's often convenient to look at the hourly rate, or the provided quote for the project, this can often lead to less attention on questions and issues that should go into any project calculus. At Tag1, we often hear this come up from both our new and existing clients. But it's a siren song: Though many organizations want to get the best bang out of their buck, it doesn't necessarily mean that going the more affordable route is the right direction. In recent years, the explosion of software consultancies and professional services has led some to argue that software implementation has become a "commodity business." This is couched in the mistaken belief that any engineer, if afforded the right tools, can rapidly assemble pre-existing components to manifest solutions quickly with minimal investment. However, such a notion of assemblage doesn't avoid the Frankenstein effect, in which organizations seldom have a single monolithic tool that can be leveraged horizontally. Instead, software architecture is not just about putting the pieces together; it is about understanding the optimal conjunct that those components make up. Digging into some of the secrets we've learned at Tag1 as a business, join our latest episode of Tag1 Team Talks, with Peta Hoyes (Chief Operating Officer, Partner at Tag1), Michael Meyers (Managing Director at Tag1), and your host Preston So (Editor in Chief at Tag1 and author of Decoupled Drupal in Practice). We'll dive into how grappling with the right questions can help alleviate some of the damage that the misconception of less expensive resources leading to a better outcome has wrought not only among our clients but also among software consultancies writ large.

Podcast Strategies for Growing Your Business, Community, and Influence While Profiting

If you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle, or even a bicycle, you know that hitting debris in the road can cause a serious accident. Veteran motorcyclists warn that if you see a rock or other debris in the road, whatever you do, don’t focus on it, because you’ll hit whatever you keep your eyes on. A Powerful Principle You hit whatever you focus on. That’s the powerful principle here and it’s not only true when riding a two-wheeler, it’s also true in business and in life. This principle has both its good and bad sides. Let’s get the bad side out of the way first. The Bad Side of Focus Focusing on the “rocks” in our life and business inevitably causes us to crash. For instance, when we’re all-consumed with our own faults or those of someone else, that’s all we see; that’s all we expect. In business too, focusing exclusively on a problem or obstacle gives it a life of its own that soon overwhelms us. When we focus on problems, weaknesses, excuses, and obstacles that’s what consumes our thoughts. Negative thinking gets us nowhere fast! Fixating on problems makes them loom larger in our minds and does nothing to fix them. Dwelling on the obstacles gives them power and our worst nightmare becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. What we dread most becomes our experience and we hear ourselves saying things like, “I knew this would happen!” Of course you did! You inadvertently brought it on yourself! But ironically, the very principle that can derail us and get us into so much trouble also has a very powerful good side to it. The Good Side of Focus Here are some tips for focusing on the right things—things that will keep us upright, move us forward, and get us past those obstacles and problems in life:   Focus on solutions, a way out, or a lofty goal. This takes real discipline. Back to the motorcycle analogy, instead of keeping your eyes on the rock in the road, you have to focus on a clear path next to the rock. It’s hard not to focus on the rock, but you must, because wherever you focus that’s where your wheels will take you. This doesn’t mean you ignore the problem. You have to take note of it. But you don’t let it dominate your thoughts. Instead, you focus on the way around the problem. You focus on solutions and your goals.     Magnify the good and positive. No one and nothing is perfect. In your relationships, for instance, there’s no doubt that people around you have idiosyncrasies and faults that bug you. You also surely have faults that you wish you didn’t have. But instead of focusing on these, focus on the positive. What is it about the other person (or yourself) that you admire or appreciate? Focus on that, encourage that, and expect that. Take your cue from overcomers. Look to others who have overcome obstacles and problems far greater than your own. Let their stories motivate and inspire you. Here’s a short list of successful individuals who refused to focus on the “rocks” in their lives when things got really rough.   Before becoming president, Abraham Lincoln’s failures – his “rocks in the road” – are legendary there were so many! Henry Ford’s first attempt at building cars ended in complete failure and bankruptcy. Walt Disney was cheated out of his first big business deal in New York, but that didn’t stop him! Milton Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company had no formal education and failed repeatedly in his business attempts before finally hitting the right “recipe.” Dr. Martin Luther King overcame an attempted suicide and battled with an addiction to smoking to become a powerful spiritual leader and spokesman. Sir Ernest Shackleton, after three failed attempts to rescue his men stranded in the Antarctic, finally succeeded in doing so with a borrowed ship from a foreign country. When Amy Purdy turned 19, she was rushed to the hospital in septic shock. The violent illness took her spleen, both kidneys, and both her legs below the knees. She was given less than 2% chance of survival and placed in an induced coma. With a kidney transplant and prosthetic legs, Amy not only survived, but went on to compete as a world-class snowboarder. Amy also became a successful fashion model and motivational speaker. She has appeared on Oprah, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race, and gave a TED talk that set the standard for future speakers. Focusing on stories like Amy’s and others has the profound impact in our lives of turning our “rocks in the road” into insignificant pebbles. Take a good look at what you’re focusing on, because it greatly determines the course of your life and business. Podcast Strategies for Growing Your Business, Community, and Influence While Profiting

Stress is one of the leading causes of stroke and hypertension in our society. But stress isn’t always a dirty word! We need a certain amount of stress in our lives in order to function well. For instance, a desire to excel in our business; the drive to please customers; and the practice of goal-setting and goal-completion all impose a level of stress on us that is good and productive. However, too much stress, or the wrong kind of stress can: Kill creativity Cause irritability and harm relationships Squash fun and our enjoyment of life Damage our physical, emotional, and spiritual health Stress can either come from outside of us, or be self-imposed. Either way, we can take steps to greatly reduce and/or manage our stress levels. Here are 8 effective ways to lower stress: Set reasonable goals for yourself. Here’s where you really have to know yourself. Or, if you’re in a long-term relationship, your significant other can provide you with great feedback. We need a certain level of stress in order to stretch and grow. But too much stress places unreasonable demands on us that render us less effective. Think of this in terms of a sport like surfing. The surfer wants waves big enough to give them a thrill and increase their skill. Waves that are too small are boring. But waves that are too big for the surfer’s skill and comfort level are dangerous and frightening. Find your stress sweet-spot in goal-setting and “ride that wave!”  Exercise regularly. When we’re under stress, regardless of the cause, our bodies secrete stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol. These are both important chemicals in a fight-or-flight emergency. But many stressful situations don’t allow for fighting or fleeing. Over time these stress chemicals damage our health. The best way to flush the body from these stress chemicals is to exercise. Often, I’ve experienced and heard others say when exercising, “I can feel the stress melting away!” You don’t have to have a 6-pack to get the benefits of exercise. Just get out and be active regularly.  Eat less and fast intermittently. Eating too much food and too often makes us lethargic and can cause all kinds of metabolic issues and diseases. These add to and even cause stress. Intermittent fasting is a great way to discipline yourself to cut back on the amount of food you eat. You can fast intermittently in a variety of ways:     Fast 24 hours once a week. Don’t eat between 7pm and 7am. Fast for a whole day once a month. When you fast, always stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Laugh a lot! Laughing really is good medicine. Laughing gives us a more measured perspective of reality. When we laugh, we usually do so in the context of healthy relationships. Laughing prevents us from taking ourselves too seriously. Cultivate healthy relationships. Nothing is more stressful than relational conflict. Don’t hold grudges. Forgive others their faults. Do all you can to invest in healthy relationships by loving and spending time with others. Slow down. Do you find yourself gripping the steering wheel tightly and bearing down on that slow driver in front of you? Slow down; take it easy; don’t be in such a hurry! When we hurry we make mistakes and that too adds to our stress levels. Relax, and enjoy the view. Avoid debt. Debt is a hard task-master! When we bought that new car on credit, or made that purchase on our VISA card, we thought we could handle the payments, no problem. But situations change, and that new car or purchase may now feel like a prison sentence. Take steps to get out of debt if you’re in debt; and if you’re out of debt, cling to the freedom it offers. Take time to relax, meditate, and get plenty of sleep. Your body and mind need down-time. Do something enriching and enjoyable: read a book; pursue a hobby; watch a good movie; play games with friends; go for a stroll with a loved one. Find a guided meditation app that you like and work daily on calming your mind and being mindful. And while you’re at it, be sure to get a good night’s sleep!   Too much of the wrong kind of stress can steal our joy and our health. Put one or more of these stress-reduction strategies into practice today and experience some relief! Then manage your stress as a way of life. Podcast Strategies for Growing Your Business, Community, and Influence While Profiting

Change is inevitable. Some changes we initiate and enter into willingly, while other changes are thrust upon us. Changes that happen to us may be desirable or undesirable. All change is a step into the unknown. Changes emerge from a variety of sources: Changes in family Changes as we age Changes through the phases of our business Changes in technology Changes in the market Changes in what were once tried and true practices Changes brought on by a significant personal event or calamity Changes in relationships Whether we choose a change for ourselves, or have some change imposed on us, change demands that we leave what we know and move toward what is not yet clearly defined. For this reason, change offers us amazing opportunities for personal and professional growth—but we often miss those opportunities. Here are just a few reasons why: We may buck or balk at the change. When we actively resist change that is unavoidable, we’re prone to fight, kick, grumble, and complain about it. If the change is truly inevitable, then this negative response only serves to prolong our misery and hinder our growth. This response also makes us difficult to live with! We may blame others for the change. If what we perceive to be a negative change is forced upon us, it’s easy to resent those who imposed the change. Our resentment can evolve into anger, holding grudges, and broken relationships. Our dark responses place us in a thick, gloomy smog that prevents us from seeing or dealing with the situation clearly. We may retreat from the change. We do this by passively avoiding the change, trying to postpone it, or deny its reality. This approach transports us into a fantasy world of our own creation where no real growth or forward movement can occur. How do we respond to change in a healthy manner? 5 Strategies for Dealing Effectively with Change   Accept the change and step into it with childlike wonder. Have you ever noticed that when Americans travel abroad, there are really only two major types of tourists? On the one hand are tourists who want to experience their host country by retaining as much of America as possible. They eat at McDonalds, they get their coffee at Starbucks, they stay at places where everyone speaks English, and so forth. Frankly, I’m not sure why they even bothered traveling abroad, when they could experience the same thing in a burrow of Detroit, New York, or Los Angeles. The second kind of tourist studies the language of the host country before departing. They seek to stay in out-of-the-way places unfrequented by tourists. They wander around with childlike wonder attempting to soak up as much of the culture, its people, and its beauty as possible. I think you get the picture. When change is thrust upon us, we need to approach it like that second tourist. But you may object, “The tourist chooses to travel to a foreign land. I didn’t choose this change!” This leads us to the second strategy.       Anticipate change. Okay, we may not have chosen a particular change, but often we can anticipate it and prepare ourselves for it. We already know that change is inevitable, so look around you. What changes do you see coming down the pike? In view of those changes, ask yourself:   What new skills will I need in order to embrace this change? What can I learn from this change, personally and professionally? How can I leverage this change for good in my life, my business, and the lives of those I love?   Assess the change. If the change appears to be unpleasant or unwanted, discover whether it’s possible to reject or negotiate some aspects of the change. Then, embrace what you cannot alter and make the best of it. Stephen Covey lists “Fear of change and postponing improvement” as one of the seven habits of ineffective people.    Allow time to grieve. While this may seem overstated, some changes warrant a time of grief. For instance, when we send a child off to college, we’re happy for them and their new experience, but we grieve their departure. We may also grieve losing a long-time client to a competitor. Or we may simply struggle with having to leave an old system or process behind. If that’s the case, have a funeral for it. Celebrate its past service but put it to rest. Doing so will help you move on and embrace the new change. Advance as a change-agent. Whenever possible, initiate change instead of having it imposed on you. This puts you in charge. Constantly watch for ways to improve what you’re doing. Are you currently using two apps that could be replaced with one? You know that weekly or monthly task that takes so much time? How can you complete it more quickly and still do it well? When you hear yourself complaining about the way something works, why not improve it? Maybe there’s a routine task that you loath. Find someone else to do it!   Let’s face it, things would get pretty boring without change! Don’t let change get you down. Promote it, embrace it and grow by it. Podcast Strategies for Growing Your Business, Community, and Influence While Profiting

As entrepreneurs and business people it’s easy to slip into the mindset that building relationships is merely a means to an end—making the sale. Now, there’s no argument…we’re all in business to make money and without question, relationships help us accomplish this. But think about it. If we stoop to merely using people to get what we want, we might have a healthy bank account but be bankrupt in our relationships and our lives. After all, what’s the use of money if you can’t enjoy it and have no one with whom you can enjoy it? Imagine if your banker was the only person to show up at your funeral! I suggest that we change our thinking. I believe that if we cultivate deep relationships with others, one of the byproducts of those relationships will be prosperity. And forming meaningful relationships makes the journey so much sweeter! The joys of true companionship, partnership, and fellowship far outweigh any bank account. Yet, in my experience, when we focus on relationships, the money will follow. Post Partum and Why it Matters This week's conversation centered all around the postpartum phase and why it is so important. To learn all about this topic, we were lucky enough to be joined by Kayla Levine, a postpartum expert and doula. Her offerings to the world include: Postpartum Doula Care  Placenta Medicine Making  Vaginal Steaming for Womb Health  Postpartum Education & Planning  Birth Worker Support Groups All of her offerings are holistic in nature. She looks at the whole body, mind, and spirit in her approach to helping you remember your body’s innate healing abilities. Also be sure to head over to tucsonplacentaencapsulation.com to download a FREE 10 page ebook Kayla has created for us all about 4th trimester planning for the modern mama. OUR CONVERSATION To me, I was most surprised to learn that the postpartum phase could actually bring about radical healing if just a couple of important factors were focused on. Many women also experience the onset of autoimmune conditions and other chronic illness after birth - basically the opposite of radical healing. However, Kayla says two key factors contribute to which side of the story you are on: 1.) nutrition and 2.) community support She also said that she believes postpartum depression should really be called postpartum DEPLETION. As the root of what is wrong is micronutrient deficiencies and lack of support. Pregnancy can be quite taxing on the body and much higher quantities of nutrients are needed during that time. If those needs are not met, the body pulls from stores that it has saved up. This is why after pregnancy many women are extremely depleted of certain nutrients that are not common in a standard American diet. OTHER TOPICS WE DISCUSSED INCLUDE: The difference between a midwife and doula How the postpartum phase should really be seen as the fourth trimester and what is meant by that Importance of mom and baby being together during the first three months Specific things we can do to support other women who are in the postpartum phase Why cold things must be avoided (both literally and energetically) Post natal depletion: what it is and how to avoid it Possible benefits of eating the placenta (don't worry - placenta encapsulation is a thing so you don't have to literally eat it with a fork and knife!) Today I'm talking to acrylic artist Anna Bartlett about all things acrylic paints, art studios, paint parties and how to make the easiest sketch books ever. Anna is an artist from Queensland, Australia and the owner of Shiny Happy Art. We met through Instagram and instantly connected over our shared love of bright colors and happy art. Anna shares her journey of transitioning from an accountant to art studio owner and how she positions her business as a premium service. For anyone who struggles with charging enough to run a profitable business, Anna's thought process just might convince you to start charging what you're worth. Anna is a presenter at our online summer workshop, Draw, Paint, Make. To learn more, click the link in the show notes down below. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: - How Anna started her own art business and evolved it into a successful career - How Anna uses positivity and The Law of Attraction to help shape her business to what it is today - The importance of choosing whether to become a premium product - The benefits of using good quality acrylic paints with your students - What strategies Anna uses with her scrapbooks and notebooks LISTEN TO THE SHOW: In the show, Anna shows me the sketchbooks she uses to map out certain projects. While I couldn't find the same sketchbooks or plastic covers in the United States (I believe they are only available in the UK and Australia), you can make a similar scrapbook. I was so excited to use this inexpensive type of scrapbook for my own personal use, that I created my own. Simply take 8-10 12" x 18" sheets of white sulphite paper and fold in half. Make the crease strong by running a ruler along the fold line. Using a long arm stapler, staple the pieces of paper together at the crease. Use Gesso to paint the front and back cover. this make the cover strong and feels like a real sketchbook. I'm using my hand-made sketchbook for Anna's 15 Flowers Acrylic painting class. I already completed the Sunflower and Lily and next up is the Daisy. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast As I was reminded of in a recent conversation with Emma Huvos, we protect what we love. As the ethics of permaculture call for us to care for Earth and people, then practicing permaculture can be a political act requiring activism. In this conversation facilitated by guest host David Bilbrey, John Seed shares his work of nearly 40 years to preserve landscapes all over the world, beginning first in New South Wales, Australia to save rainforests. He and others in those early days created the many direct actions now used by activists and protestors all around the world including tree sitting or chaining oneself to industrial equipment. From there he moves to his current work with the Rainforest Information Centre and the Los Cedros Reserve to save the rainforests of Ecuador. Find out more about Los Cedros at https://reservaloscedros.org/, and the Rainforest Information Center at rainforestinformationcentre.org. Given all the names and organizations John mentioned you'll find a number of additional links in the resource section below, including to the Save Los Cedros petition so you can get involved. -- I posted a question on the Facebook page for the show back in early November asking “Should permaculturists get involved in politics?” And received a number of responses that ranged from, “Politics and permaculture = incompatible” to “Absolutely. Everyone should get involved in politics. If we leave it only to those who are attracted to it, we get exactly the current situation.” My own personal perspective and why I was interested in David's interview with John rests closer to that second answer: we should all be involved in politics and action. As a permaculture practitioner, my focus continues to be on the philosophical underpinnings of this holistic systems-thinking approach paired with the social, economic, and, yes, political change we can create through intentional design. Though I see the world through this lens of political and social work, I also understand that we should engage in the activities we are called to. We only have so much time in our lives to work on the issues that matter to us. If you have a limited interest in politics but live in a democratic society with elections, vote. If you want to go a step further and help preserve rainforests, get involved with the Rainforest Information Centre. If you feel working on, or in, politics holds the most possibility for you to affect change, become a lawyer, run for office, or work to enact policy changes at your municipal, state, province, national, or the international level. One one of the things I love most about permaculture is the breadth of possibilities available to us. Use your knowledge and ability to create the world you want to live in. While you're doing that, know that there are tens of thousands of others doing the same thing, in their own way, alongside you. -- If there is any way I can help connect you to the resources you need, answer your question, or help you get involved, email, call or write. From here, the next episode is an interview with Maddy Harland, the editor of Permaculture Magazine, to discuss her new book Fertile Edges, and look at her more than 25 years in the center of the permaculture community.
