One of the things about life and business is there are always going to be setbacks and adversity. Our lives will be full of challenges and things to overcome. And the degree to which we experience success in business, and indeed life, is related to our ability to overcome these obstacles, these hurdles, these setbacks. And if we don't already have this skill set, we've got to develop that skill set and build resilience into the way we approach life. In today's episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green is joined by Rodney Cottam. Rocket Rod Cottam has resilience in spades. Rodney is an ex-military man of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment who loves to run — and whose love of running has helped him overcome some pretty major challenges. In 2004, Rodney was in a serious motor vehicle accident, sustaining several injuries including a spinal injury, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, punctured lung and multiple lacerations. After two 10-hour surgeries and 12 months of treatment, his long-term prognosis caused by spinal nerve damage is a condition called Brachial Plexus Palsy, which has left Rodney permanently paralysed in his left arm. In a split second, Rodney went from being an elite soldier, in the best physical shape possible, to completely losing all movement and feeling in one arm, from shoulder to fingertips. www.runrocketrun.com Rodney says, “I'd always loved running, but after the accident it was a challenge as I had no strength or support in my shoulder joint. Over time, I found my balance and rhythm, transitioning from an elliptical machine to a treadmill, then to road and trail running.” Now Rodney runs at least five days and up to 100kms per week, and in October 2024, he will run his third trail run challenge in support of Invictus Australia. This year he will be running for 7 days, covering 560km. The plan is to complete a major challenge each year and participate in ultra-trail events in Australia and around the world under a project called Run Rocket Run. “When we believe in ourselves, we are capable of so much more than we think. We can push ourselves, physically and mentally, way past any perceived threshold. And this journey—this commitment to ourselves—is an incredibly special and rewarding one.” ~ Rodney Cottam [5:50] - The Military is much like your Dental Practice, it reveals more about you as a human than you possibly think. [8:03] - The day that changed everything. Rod was simply riding his motorcycle to work … [17:01] - Laying in hospital with a broken pelvis, punctured lung, broken ribs, an arm that's not doing what it used to do. How do you reevaluate your life, stay optimistic, and what do you think about your future? [23:01] - So how does a person who has had muscle surgically removed from his legs and attached to his paralysed arm, find relief and harmony in ultra-running? [25:34] - How the Invictus Games became Rod's purpose in life. [28:04] - What does resilience mean, and what does it take to be resilient in business?

He is distinctive for his formal approach to material, almost exclusively working in human blood, crude oil, steel and biro. Recently, he has made international headlines with 'Putin Filled with Ukrainian Blood', a globally exhibited work produced in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The work was smuggled into Moscow and live-streamed on Red Square during the Victory Day parade. It had a symbolic price of $150m to match the amount of money allegedly spent on bribes and kickbacks to FIFA officials. Last year, he publically sold blood-soaked copies of Prince Harry's Memoir, and projected a sculpture filled with the blood of Afghans onto St Paul's Cathedral to comment on Harry's remarks in Spare about his number of kills in Afghanistan. On today's Zero Limits Podcast I chat with with former Royal Australian Army Medical Corps Sergeant McQuilty Quirk NSCCoco enlisted into the Australian Army on 7 December 1999, into the Medical Corps. He wanted to save lives, and he was very good at his job. He would apply these lessons in East Timor in 2001 treating children and adults impacted by the conflict. All his training would not prepare him to see the horrors of war in Iraq in 2006 and his mind was injured. Upon returning home McQuilty delved into a nightmare ridden life, consuming alcohol to drown out the horrors of his time in Iraq. He was lucky to have his wife, who along with their two kids saved him from a perilous journey of minimal sleep, nightmares, flashbacks and suicidal thoughts.McQuilty developed resilience, a positive mindset, and fought back to be deployed again. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. On the 13 August 2011, McQuilty's life changed again, forever. McQuilty was Wounded-in-Action by an improvised explosive device detonated under his vehicle. The vehicle was thrown ten metres from the blast site, McQuilty was ejected from the rear hatch and thrown thirty metres and landed on the side of the road headfirst. Paul 'Warlord' Warren was an Australian Muay Thai kick-boxing champion who was used to the physically punishing world of martial arts at its highest level. It was 18 July 2009 and Ben was the campaign's eleventh fatality. After losing his leg and being discharged from the Army, Paul has experienced highs and lows that we all can learn from. ABOUT DAVID: David McBride is facing 50 years in prison for blowing the whistle on the Australian Defence Force's leadership. David served in Afghanistan as a military lawyer to the Royal Australian Regiment and Australian Special Forces respectively. Over his two deployments to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2013, he became increasingly concerned that the war was dictated by politics rather than the best interests of Australians and Australian soldiers. He saw the Rule of Law and the rules of war not being followed, and indeed being breached. David submitted an internal report in 2014. After seeing no effective action, he disclosed documents to the ABC in 2016. David is now facing charges over the release of material related to the alleged misconduct of Australian special forces in Afghanistan. ABOUT ROBERT: Dr Robert Brennan taught anatomy and several other biomedical sciences for a decade or so before medical school and a career in psychiatry. Recognising that the governments response to the pandemic was anti science, anti reality and anti humane, he joined the Covid Medical Network, the Red Union group and now TNT radio. For the temerity of claiming that lockdowns are harmful and the covid vaccine ought NOT to be mandated he has lost the registration to practice medicine and been deemed a “danger to public health and safety” by the regulator. Join him each week for dangerous discussions of public interest.

As a footnote, in June of 2019, the federal police raided the offices of the ABC because David McBride had released information, which, as we know was broadcast by the ABC. The warrant according to one news source, allowed police to "add, copy, delete, or alter" any material they wanted to alter on the ABC's computers. Daniel Keighran, VC was born in Nambour, and grew up in Lowmead; a small town approximately 80km from Bundaberg in regional Queensland. His upbringing was anything but normal; Dan describes it as ‘pretty rough', with a loving mother but an absent father challenging his teen years and where his one male constant was his Grandfather- himself a World War II veteran. Indeed, the first-person Dan ever saw shot was his father. Dan then enlisted in the Australian Army at 17 and served his country for 11 years seeing operational service in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia for his role in the action at the Battle of Derapet. The citation for the Victoria Cross reads: ‘For the most conspicuous acts of gallantry and extreme devotion to duty in action in circumstances of great peril'. In 2011, Dan discharged from full-time Army service and commenced work in the mining industry. Initially working in exploration drilling throughout Western Australia and then as an underground shotfirer (blaster) in a gold mine outside of Kalgoorlie. It was in his cottage in Kalgoorlie that he received notification that the Chief of Army was coming to visit him. In the tiny lounge at Kalgoorlie Airport, the Chief of Army handed him an envelope…. Walking once more into the breach - Commando, Anthony PlaterThis week Bram Connolly talks to retired Special Forces Warrant Officer, Anthony Plater. Bram and Anthony served together in the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, the 4th Battalion (Commando), the 2nd Commando Regiment and the Special Operations Head Quarters. During the years they served on operations together including Somalia and Timor and they also recount stories from more recent operations in Afghanistan. Anthony is now a Crossfit Coach located in Canberra and an advocate for Veteran health and well being. This conversation, just like their careers, is littered with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. They recount the characters throughout their careers that had the biggest impacts and influence on them personally and they talk about how Anthony dealt with the effects of PTSD; as a warrior walks one more time into the breach. A note from Bram Connolly: This episode is a timely reminder that a career in the Australian Defence Force is temporary and that the most important factor for mental fitness is the strong relationships that we build and maintain. Remember, not everyone is affected the same way in the same circumstance. During this episode we used a sound effect to protect the names of those still serving, or those that may wish to remain below the detection threshold. We have omitted anything that is not available through public discourse or on the internet. Listen to the end for a shout out to the fine soldiers of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment - The Big Blue One - our first operational deployment in 1993 will always remain the most special of memories. Unless you served in Vietnam, you probably weren't aware that U.S. forces fought alongside other allies, Australia being one of them, and an important one at that. Dave Sabben was one of those soldiers who bravely led Australian military forces not long after the U.S. war in Vietnam began. Sabben joined the army as part of Australia's National Service program in 1965. By the end of '65 he had completed officer training, graduating as a 2nd lieutenant. Shortly thereafter he deployed to Vietnam as platoon commander of 12 Platoon, D Company, 6 Royal Australian Regiment (RAR). After only a couple of months in-country, Sabben's unit experienced their first battle, and what would come to be known as one of Australia's fiercest and most intense engagements of the Vietnam War - the Battle of Long Tan. Hear how Sabben led his unit against overwhelming odds and survived a battle that in his words, "no amount of training could prepare you for," in this special edition of HAZARD GROUND! www.sabben.com | "The Battle of Long Tan" | "Through Enemy Eyes" | "Danger Close" Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors at www.hazardground.com/sponsors!
