We end on her talking college and her next choice. Enjoy and don't forget to subscribe for weekly podcasts and daily shorts!
“As the sun rises over the mountains in a peachy orb, the cool air erupts with crane music. One group after another flaps heavily into the air and the cranes fly past me in straggling lines, heading east.” This story is a portrait of early fall in Montana's Helena Valley—the third and final episode in the Lake Helena series about getting to know this particular place over time. It's a story of sandhill cranes, Baird's sandpipers, thunderstorms and waves, and the wonder and music of fall bird migration. The podcast includes lots of ambient sounds I recorded. At Lake Helena, we hear sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis), marsh wrens (Cistothorus palustris), common yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas), red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), Virginia rails (Rallus limicola), Baird's sandpipers (Calidris bairdii), greater yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca), and waves. We also hear a post-breeding red-winged blackbird flock I recorded in Granite County, Montana in August 2024. Finally, from the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir, we hear Canada geese (Branta canadensis), sandhill cranes, ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis), and a Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia). You can find the illustrated transcript of this story here: https://wildwithnature.com/2024/09/01/sandhill-cranes-helena/I depend on the support of my listeners to continue doing this work. 2020 Olympic medalist, Bella Sims, experienced something all swimmers do, a challenging meet. Hers was, of course, a consequential one--the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Many fans expected a strong performance in Indy after Sims' lights-out NCAA Championships this past spring. Spoiler alert! Sims was not sick and did not miss her taper at Olympic Trials. From her perspective, and her Sandpipers' club coach, Ron Aitken, the reason was very specific. Sims unpacks it all in this podcast, talks about her competition ahead at this week's SPEEDO SUMMER NATIONALS, and she charts her future.
In this episode, embark on a captivating journey with Katie Grimes, the teenage prodigy who conquered the Tokyo Olympics at 15 and is now charting her course for Paris 2024, having already secured her spot on the open water team. In this episode, Katie bares it all as she reflects on the highs and lows of her Olympic debut, sharing the details and emotions of securing 4th place. She shares how it serves as a guiding force for her future endeavors as she balances competing for Team USA this Summer in open water and working to qualify in the pool as well. If accomplished, she'll be the first ever to achieve the extraordinary feat of competing at the Olympics in both open water swimming and pool swimming events. Immerse yourself in the world of open water racing through Katie's eyes – from the nuances that distinguish it from pool swimming to her initial experiences, the unique preparations involved, and the adrenaline-charged moments of navigating aggressive races and athletes. Ask yourself - would you move across the country as a young teenager to pursue your dream? World Championship team member Claire Weinstein did, as she moved from New York to Las Vegas to join the guru of coaching high schoolers, Ron Aitken and the Sandpipers of Nevada. Training alongside other standout swimmers like World Championship silver medalist and Paris Olympian Katie Grimes, Tokyo Olympian Bella Sims, and World 200 butterfly 4th place finisher Ilya Kharun, has boosted Claire Weinstein to the next level, proven by her defeat of G.O.A.T. Katie Ledecky in the 200 free at the 2023 USA Trials. Coming fresh off a huge life decision, Claire Weinstein recently committed to swim for the Cal Golden Bears, but she can't look too far ahead since there's this thing called the Olympics to focus on next summer. We now know why people said we should talk to Claire Weinstein and they were right, she IS awesome. Enjoy!
If you don't know his name yet, you will soon. Ilya Kharun just started college and is already a 4th place finisher at the World Championships, and now he is joining forces with Bob Bowman, the mastermind behind current World Champions Léon Marchand and Hubert Kós. How is Ilya Kharun so fast at this young age? Well, his parents were Cirque du Soleil acrobats and he's also trained at the best club team in the country, the Sandpipers of Nevada, which has produced several Olympians and World Championship team members in recent years. In this episode, we hear from Ilya Kharun himself to find out what's between his ears and learn what makes him tick. Look out for this guy.

We sat down with Bella Sims, the Olympian and world champion who most recently broke 2 world junior records in 12 minutes at the World Cup stop in Indianapolis. Sims breaks down how she managed her 200 free-100 Back double with such a quick turnaround and what led to her success in both. She did admit that while her backstroke has become arguably her strongest stroke outside of freestyle, her true love is butterfly and she doesn't even really like backstroke. Her success in Indianapolis raised the question of if she still plans to start at Florida in the fall of 2023, where she has committed. Sims reveals she is currently unsure of her plans moving forward, indicating that she may take a gap year to stay with Ron Aitken and Sandpipers in the lead-up to the 2024 Olympic Trials.

Marina Castellino and her sister Marcela share a love of birds, especially those living in Mar Chiquita, one of South America's largest wetlands. Marina got inspired from seeing her older sister's love for shorebirds. The two sisters helped get Mar Chiquita declared a National Park and National Reserve for Argentina. That supports birds like sandpipers that migrate between South and North America. So if you see one near you, efforts from Marina may have helped you see it there! Hello, welcome to the first wild suzhou of 2021, today i'm talking about the Western Sandpiper. The western sandpiper is a bird that you would see a lot if you went to the West coast beaches. Most of the time it lives in California or other places along the coast, even going into south america, but it will fly to Alaska in spring or summer to mate. They spend their winters in the lower half of North America. Since most of the year is spent migrating the long distance, they like to stop on the beaches to eat and rest. These birds will eat insects, crustaceans, mollusks and lots of other stuff they can find on the beaches like mussels and clams. If you see them on a beach and they're all together waiting for the water to go back, this is their way of catching food. They wait for the water to wash food onto the shore, then use their beaks to peck it up nd run away from the water. While the birds are in alaska their predators are big carnivores like red foxes. While they are along the coast, they have to be careful for bigger seabirds who are looking to eat their eggs and babies. The westerm sandpiper is a very small bird, they only weigh a few ounces. The have a white belly, and brown wings and back, with lots of dark spots and patterns, Their feet are slightly webbed which might help them walk along the wet sand easier. The average lifespan for a sandpiper is about 6-9 years .

We've all seen sandpipers foraging busily on mudflats or at the ocean's edge. But this Lesser Yellowlegs often carols from the top of a tall conifer in its nesting territory in Alaska. The name "sandpiper" actually comes from the voices of these birds, rather than from their long-billed probing in the sand. While the name refers in particular to the birds' short "piped" -- or whistled -- calls, a number of sandpipers are surprisingly good singers. Learn more at BirdNote.org.

Bursting onto the scene, Erica Sullivan makes her appearance on The Social Kick. Erica is a 20-year-old long distance pool and open water swimmer from Las Vegas. Newly selected to represent Team USA in the 1500m, Erica claimed her ticket in a brilliant trials swim, coming in second to Katie Ledecky and holding off Sandpipers teammate Katie Grimes. Selected for her first Olympic Games during Pride Month and with the games taking place in Tokyo, Erica opens up about her position of representation being both gay and of Japanese descent. Proud of who she is and unapologetically witty and charismatic, our conversation touches on the importance of representation, not just in swimming but all over the world. One of the fastest up and coming US distance swimmers, we talk to Erica about what it's like training open water in Nevada, her difficulties and advice with mental health as an athlete and her love of film (watch out Oscars)! A joy to speak to and get to know, Erica Sullivan is undoubtably making waves both in and out of the water. Enjoy! Our guests this morning are Ashley Goldsmith, Sandpipers' 89th Co-President and Gloria Correa, Sandpipers' Director of this year's Holiday Homes Tour. Gloria joined Sandpipers in 2017 and has spent the last 3 years working on the Holiday Homes Tour. Being a designer in her personal life made her the perfect fit as this year's tour Director. Ashley joined Sandpipers in 2012 as a way to connect with her community and get involved. Before being elected Co-President, she had held many chair and board positions, but her favorite role was always working with the Holiday Homes Tour team, where she held the positions of Facilitator, Event Co-Chair for 3 years, and Director. We visit the Fraser Estuary, where fresh water meets the salty Pacific Ocean in British Columbia, Canada. Scientists are confirming what locals and birders have long known -- these mudflats are a unique and important pitstop for Western Sandpipers during their epic migration. The Pacific Flyway is a migratory route for at least a billion birds. For many, like the Western Sandpiper, it's an epic journey twice a year. Each spring they fly from wintering grounds in South America all the way to the Arctic where they breed in the summer. They then fly back down in the fall. Our understanding of what fuels that journey is changing, and a port expansion could jeopardize an important food source. Ashley's years of experience helped take the vision of a virtual tour and make it a reality. As Co-President, it is her hope that the Sandpipers' organization continues to grow and increase their philanthropic and community outreach programs to make the South Bay a better place for everyone.
