Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Rodney Pierce, a middle school social studies teacher from Roanoke Rapids, narrowly defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Michael Wray in last month's Democratic primary. He campaigned with what he describes as an effort to "educate" voters about Wray's record in the N.C. House of voting with Republicans. Because no Republicans filed for the seat, Pierce will represent majority Black Warren, Halifax and Northampton counties in the legislature next year. Pierce spoke with WUNC's Colin Campbell about his goals to address economic development in an area he calls North Carolina's "Neglected Northeast," as well as how he mounted a successful primary campaign. He also discussed the challenges rural schools are facing and how his candidacy became a civics lesson for his students.

Social studies education in Connecticut public schools has been getting a major revamp. It's something we've covered on this program. This includes the statute requiring local Indigenous history that rolled out this year, and a statute in 2022 calling for Asian American and Pacific Islander studies, rolling out in the fall of 2025. The state legislature combined many of these mandates in 2021, calling for a "model curriculum." This curriculum should include Native American studies and AAPI studies, the bill stated, in addition to LGBTQ studies, climate change, financial literacy, military service and veterans, civics, media literacy, the principles of social-emotional learning, and racism. It was a long list and a tall order, and prompted the Connecticut State Department of Education to gather a group of experts on all of these fronts, and construct a new set of social studies standards. This hour, we hear from some of them and preview that document. GUESTS: Steve Armstrong: Social Studies Advisor, Connecticut State Department of Education; Past President, National Council for the Social Studies Tony Roy: President, Connecticut Council for the Social Studies; Social Studies Teacher, Bloomfield Public Schools Dr. Brittney Yancy: Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies, Illinois College Dr. Michael Bartone: Assistant Professor, Central Connecticut State University's Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education Support the show: http://wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back! New for season 3, the podcast is leaving the studio in a new series called “On the Road.” Focused on academy alumni and where they are now, our mic is traveling to different states to check in with them. Not everyone is qualified to teach. The career path demands distinctive quality traits from the teacher, equally firm and gentle, doubly so for a middle school teacher. Joining us is a recent Class of 2017 graduate. A teacher in a public school system southeast of Birmingham, she is replicating the teacher-student mentorship modeled for her as a student at the academy in hopes of creating meaningful relationships with her students.Hosted by Dr. Brad Schultz and Amanda Price, this …. is Mustangs Unbridled.
In the first interview of our Back to School season, OEA member host Kayla Potter interviews middle-school Social Studies Teacher, Malik White. Kayla and Malik, an early career educator, discuss what it has been like to be a new teacher. Malik's first year of teaching occurred during the 2020-2021 school year and most of the year was in comprehensive distance learning (CDL) due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In his second year, he had the challenge of transitioning everything from online to in-person teaching. Malik found that his relationship skills and purposeful rapport-building style led to success in both CDL and in-person settings. Some of these strategies include asking students questions, holding classroom circles, and generally normalizing conversations so students feel more comfortable sharing about themselves. Malik also witnessed the benefits of being an authentic educator and showing your students your true self. Kayla and Malik also discuss ideas for how to establish a healthy work/life balance (hint: it's okay to say “no”). Some tips Malik had for new teachers include: finding joy in the profession, being able to laugh at yourself, being unafraid to make mistakes, giving yourself grace, and setting realistic goals. And identify which school printers are least busy!
