This episode features Joe Wos whose passion for drawing mazes and cartoons began at an early age and has shaped his unique career. Over the years, Wos' art has evolved into a whimsical blend of mazes and cartoons that he calls Mazetoons. Regarded as a master maze maker, Wos created the world's largest hand-drawn maze in 2012. Measuring 140 square feet, it features more than 100 illustrations. One of Wos' mural-sized mazes is on permanent display at StarKist's international headquarters, and Wos is the cartoonist who draws the iconic Charlie the Tuna character for the company. For the past 20 years, Wos has been the visiting resident cartoonist of the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California. In Pittsburgh, Wos founded the ToonSeum, one of three museums dedicated to cartoon arts in the United States. In addition to creating his own art, Wos teaches cartooning at Central Catholic High School as well as by hosting “Cartoon Academy,” a PBS television program that teaches the art of cartooning. Now in its third season, the show recently won two Mid-Atlantic Emmys—Host/Moderator; Educational Content Short Form. During our conversation we explore the challenges and rewards Wos has experienced as he navigated such an unconventional career. Additional information about Joe Wos is available at www.mazetoons.com. His books are available on Amazon. If you would like to own one of Joe Wos' unique Mazetoons, visit the scholarpractitionernexus.com where you can find several different maze designs depicting the often messy, swampy nature of educational practice.

Seafood sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the world of environmentalism. This week's episode features an interview with International Seafood Sustainability Foundation's president Susan Jackson. We discuss ISSF's history, tuna sustainability, unique partnerships between industry, scientists and NGOs, transparency in the wake of cynicism and more. Susan Jackson is President of ISSF, a global partnership among scientists, tuna processors, and environmental nonprofits to undertake science-based initiatives for the long-term conservation and sustainable use of tuna stocks, reducing bycatch and promoting a healthy marine ecosystem. Prior to joining ISSF, Jackson was the vice president for government/industry relations and seafood sourcing for Del Monte Foods, where her responsibilities included government relations at the federal, state, and local levels, and acting as Del Monte's representative to trade and industry associations. Susan was also responsible for the purchase of all raw tuna and tuna co-pack manufacturing for Del Monte's StarKist brand. Susan joined the H.J. Heinz Company in 1997 as an attorney in the law department, later working with the company's seafood sourcing and other areas of procurement. What We Discussed in This Episode: What was the one tuna stock management failure that set ISSF in motion? What was unique for industry, scientists and NGOs to work together? How does transparency and auditing work in a multinational industry? What difficulties lay ahead for the seafood industry? What are the long-term challenges in regards to sustainability? How has ISSF become a model bigger than their niche? While the Trump administration and the Saudis seem to be searching for an explanation for what exactly happened to Jamal Khashoggi once inside the Saudi embassy in Istanbul........Turkish investigators are searching for parts of Khashoggi's body in a forest near the city. Now, that got us thinking. How would homicide detectives in this country go about making the case that Saudi Arabia was behind what appears to be a cold blooded murder? We will go In Depth. And, after decades of well documented human rights abuses, what is it about the Khashoggi case that has turned opinions against Saudi Arabia? We will look into that, too. Ever think there was something fishy about the price of canned tuna? Turns out, you were on to something. StarKist admits to fixing prices. And, you know what....this sort of thing happens more than you might think. We will go In Depth. Also, ONE BILLION DOLLARS! That's the prize up for grabs in tonight's Mega Millions drawing. The Carolina Shout - Ragtime and Jazz Piano with Ethan Uslan
Vocalist Laura Windley opens the show with a number fresher than Starkist tuna. Ethan plays a polka written for a Civil War Sanitary Fair, and he explains what a Sanitary Fair is (no, it is not a soap circus). This week, Caroline and writer Sam Lansky get shook and shaken by discussing the trailer for the Britney Spears Lifetime movie, dissecting Candace Cameron Burre’s savage Starkist tuna commercial, and seriously contemplating buying tickets to Pitbull's Bahamas cruise.

A public art project honoring the thousands of San Diegans who worked in the once-thriving tuna canning industry will be dedicated by the Port of San Diego. “The Cannery Workers Tribute – Parque del Sol,” is located at the southwest corner of Cesar Chavez Parkway and Crosby Road, near Cesar Chavez Park. The site was the location where many workers took a break from the canneries that were housed in what is now the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding/Continental Maritime property. http://bit.ly/x4nerFrom 1912 to 1986, the property was occupied by tuna canning companies such as Premier Packing Company, International Packing Corporation, Van Camp Packing Company, Westgate Sea Products Company, Hopkins Inc., Westgate-California Foods and Bumble Bee Seafoods. Other nearby canneries included the California Tuna Canning Company and High Seas Tuna Pack Company.
