The fitness industry has tried to wrongly convince you that checking off a list of exercises is the same as gaining and applying scientific knowledge… Since you are here, you know that there is something more to gain by thinking for yourself and being empowered by fitness. Fortunately, This interview with William McNeely is a tell-all on thinking fit and being fit with a god-centered/universal/ view on “Why You Should Exercise, Eat Healthy, and Die Anyway…” This also so happens to be the title of his latest book. He’s a godly family man that writes with a strong philosophy voice and lifts heavy weights in Uggs. Buckle up, this is a deep conversation... If you are a trainer, this episode will be an insight on balancing gym life and family life in a meaningful and spiritual way. If you are an exercise enthusiast, this conversation will present something more than motivation in personal training and that the idea of hiring a personal trainer just to lose 10lbs is cutting yourself short. If you are from our corner of the fitness world, you will enjoy how Jennifer and William indulge in the universal connection of oneness in physical strength to the beat of the spirit. The fitness industry tried to convince you that a list of exercises is the same as gaining and applying scientific knowledge. Because you are here, you know that there is something more to gain by thinking for yourself and being empowered by fitness. This hero of mine has been a pillar in my life for over eight years. Ale embodies kindness, strength, and compassion. Her and I became fast friends our freshman year of undergrad and she continues to change my life as our friendship grows and changes over the years. In this conversation, we sit down (over FaceTime of course!) to catch up and discuss her journey over the last few years, and her big decision to move back home—to Miami—earlier this year, that was before Covid arrived and changed her plans. We talk about finding your tribe and surrounding yourself with people who build you up and hold you accountable. We talk racial unrest and hear Ale's perspective about how we can better show up for our marginalized brothers and sisters, now and always. She shares her journey about her own mental health and how important it has become for her to focus on her well being, everyday, as a practice of mindfulness. (TRIGGER WARNING) She also opens up about her struggles with suicidal thoughts. Ale's resilience and transparency to share her struggles endlessly inspires me. She finds inner strength from opening up and letting others see that none of us have this crazy life figured out, at all, and it is such a better place to be when we have others supporting us. I can't wait for you to hear from her heart, she is filled with empathy and love and shares so much truth in our conversation. Ale is changing the world for girls, women, and people everywhere, because she wears her heart on her sleeve and isn't afraid to talk about the hard things in order to grow and learn from her past. In this installment, Dr. J and GG challenge a guiding principle of personal training, instructing specific, inviolable techniques. Should we enforce movement rules and demand perfection - what’s perfect anyway? - or allow performers to self-organize and explore their own unique solutions? Joining the conversation is Dr. Lori Quinn, director of the neurorehabilitation research lab at Teachers College, Columbia University. Together, they examine whether these conventions are empowering, or abolish our movement autonomy. After all, whose movement is it anyway? The FUN continues as Dr. Juris and Gregory peel away layers of the onion that is functional training. They change the narrative on what it means to be functional, and explore the various available tools and modalities that can help enhance function. They conclude by offering practical advice on designing truly functional solutions. Listen to what lies beneath! In part two of this episode the duo cuts to the chase and gets down to what really matters. Ask yourself, when it comes to your strength and conditioning program, what actually matters? Does spending our time performing funambulist challenges result in meaningful improvements in performance? Or will improving strength, power and endurance ultimately make the difference? Hint (it’s the latter). Dr. J and GG introduce work by Dr. Wayne Wescott that supports their perspective. GG shares a caveat to what makes an exercise functional from his perspective. Finally the guys wrap up with suggestions on how to successfully incorporate exercises, of all sorts, from ones that appear to mimic sporting activities to the most isolated, single joint movements into routines that will build your most effective fitness eco-system. It’s time to poke the bear! In this, the first of a two-part series, Dr. J and Gregory take a critical look at functional training. They’ll evaluate some of the conventional thinking around the “F” word, turn it upside down and inside out, and present some enlightening research that’ll really make you reconsider your assumptions. Finally, they’ll redefine what it really means to train functionally. Join Fitness for Consumption in part one of this episode in which they stir up some real controversy. We explore the emergence of functional training in the fitness world and examine some of the claims and theories of modern day proponents. Are many of the accepted beliefs regarding functional training supported by credible, empirical science? Or, do they germinate from the whims and unsubstantiated theories of many current fitness gurus? To answer this, they dive deep into some research that begins to cast doubt on some of those theories. Dr. Juris shares some of his real-life experiences encountering functional training, and together, we offer a new definition that may change your approach to training functionally. Topics discussed: History and emergence of functional training practices Questions that begin to challenge the conventional thinking on functional training Landmark research that raises questions about current approaches to function The difference between a functional process and a functional outcome A new perspective on functional training Glossary Functional outcome - An approach to exercise in which the focus is on the transfer of the training effect to objectively measured goals. Fitness is as fitness does. Are we really fit? For what? In this inaugural episode, Dr. Paul Juris and Gregory Gordon, MA tackle the very notion of fitness, seen through the lens of human movement science. They offer a new definition of fitness, from the perspective of, “why we move.” What is fitness? Well, that’s sort of like asking, what is a car or what is a dog? Of course, you know what it is, and you assume everyone else also knows what you know. When you start scratching a little bit below the surface, however, you might discover that your definition of fitness differs from those of your colleagues, friends or family. Perhaps it’s all about body fat, or how many tires you can flip. How downward is your downward dog? How long can you hold your plank? Maybe it’s not so simple after all. Before we can learn how to get fit, we need to figure out what fitness is in the first place. That’s what this episode is all about, defining fitness from the perspective of human movement science. Join us as Dr J. proposes a unique definition of fitness that might just shift your thinking a little. We dive deep into the notion of exercises as problems and look at our movements as solutions. How does that relate to fitness? Join our conversation and find out! In this episode we discuss: A new definition of fitness What we mean by fitness problems The components of a fitness problem Glossary Constraints - Factors that influence, or limit, our movements and actions Spatial - Referring to the three-dimensional space, including objects therein, in which movement occurs Temporal- Referring to the timing component of a neural command, or timing of a movement Follow Us On: instagram @FitnessforConsumption This is a production of Think Fit. This week on the InterDrone Podcast we sat down with Tom Walker, CEO of DroneUp. DroneUp provides end to end services for autonomous missions. We spoke about a drone which carried a human kidney over Las Vegas desert in what could be the future of organ transportation, Walmart using drones to deliver Covid-19 tests, and DJI's new 'Local Mode', which stops the transfer of data, in an attempt to ease privacy concerns. Connect: Tom Walker: https://www.linkedin.com/in/webteks/ CJ Smith: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gcsmithv/ Michael Pehel: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelpehel/ Subscribe: Subscribe for more InterDrone content: https://interdrone.com/newsletters/ Register for InterDrone Online, December 15-17: https://interdrone.com/interdrone-online/ Read: 1. Drone carries human kidney over Las Vegas desert in what could be the future of organ transportation Researchers at MissionGO and the Nevada Donor Network, an organ procurement organization, announced last week two successful test flights carrying a human organ and tissue via drones in Las Vegas. The first flight on Sept. 17 transported research corneas from one hospital to another about 2½ miles away. The second flight delivered research kidneys 10 miles, from an airport to a location outside a small town in the Las Vegas desert. It marked the longest organ delivery flight in drone history, surpassing the distance of a historic April 2019 flight, when staff now with the MissionGO team transported a kidney from the Living Legacy Foundation in west Baltimore to the University of Maryland Medical Center downtown. Organs are usually transported via commercial aircraft, but the coronavirus pandemic has drastically reduced the number of flights available. A kidney can survive outside the body for 36 to 48 hours after it has been recovered, according to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. A study published in August 2019 in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found the United States discards about 3,500 kidneys a year. Meanwhile, nearly 100,000 Americans are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, and about 12 people die each day, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Although the Las Vegas kidney was for research purposes only, scientists who took biopsies before and after the flight concluded there were no changes to the tissue architecture and cell viability. 2. Walmart is using drones to deliver Covid-19 tests Walmart launched a pilot drone delivery program Tuesday that will drop off Covid-19 tests to homes within a one-mile radius of the North Las Vegas store. Customers will receive a text from DroneUp when the Quest Diagnostics (DGX) test is on its way. And depending on where there are cars and trees, the kits will land on people's driveways, front sidewalks or backyard. Delivery, which can take as little as five minutes, will be free. The samples can then be sent via FedEx to a Quest lab, which will send out results digitally. Test results typically arrive in two days. 3. What is DJI Local Data Mode? Here’s how it keeps drone flights secure Local Data Mode essentially works as a kill switch, blocking the app in use from sending data back and forth over the internet. This includes data being sent to DJI or third-party servers. The rest of the device and apps still remain connected to the internet. When using DJI’s drone apps, data is often sent between the app and DJI or third-party service providers’ servers. This allows the app to check for software updates, firmware updates, and collect relevant location data, such as maps and geofencing restrictions. By turning Local Data Mode on you would lose all of the above functions but gain more control over your privacy. To prove to the world that Local Data Mode does exactly what it says, DJI got an independent auditor to come in and tear it down. FTI Consulting, the company behind the audit found that DJI isn’t doing anything dodgy behind the scenes.

The exercise industry loves to talk about your goals, and losing weight, or celebrating a hot bod but no one is discussing the things that actually matter – the way we approach and think about exercise. Most popular fitness models are built on straw man logic and binary thinking that focuses on unimportant knowledge. In this solocast, Jennifer shares 4 reasons to upgrade your exercise because there is so much more to improving your body than what we’ve been led to believe. She even shares an exciting announcement about her new co-hosts for season 4! There are advantages to workouts in an outside natural environment that are difficult to account for within the confines of a gym or fitness center. This is because the body and mind were beautifully designed to adapt to our environment. Today’s episode is an exploration of adventure meets exercise and leadership for fitness professionals. In this day and age exercise is not just a way to improve our metabolism, it needs to be sustainable and effective enough to strengthen the immune system, negate the artificial lights, improve our brain health and many other things. A fitness instructor that can bridge this together is rare and much needed! This is a conversation for trainers, fitness leaders and exercise enthusiasts who are interested in engaging in exercise in Mother Nature’s gym, in their business or life. Exercise and Movement Science experts often measure and validate our exercise based on the load and the stimulus response, so this idea might be completely ignored by most fitness professionals. Melanie Webb is an inspiration to Jenn and many others, she is a leader in outdoor fitness and retreats. That’s why she’s the perfect person to teach us to step outside to play and workout in nature. DEPARTURES Magazine calls Melanie Webb “The person to call for guided travel in Utah’s National Parks” Melanie Webb founded Sol Fitness Adventures in 2007 (which is how long I’ve known her!) and added her private wellness retreat label WebbWell in 2019. She is a recognized leader in the adventure travel industry and an innovator in extending wellness retreats into the outdoors. Her work has been featured on Good Morning America, ATHLETA Chi, Outside, New Beauty, IDEA Fitness Journal, Los Angeles Times and more. The entire world witnessed the brutal murder of George Floyd. And the world responded in uniform condemnation. The fight to end racism demands from us the courage to acknowledge our full American history, and the humanity to look beyond the color of someone's skin. None of us can defend silence. Silence maintains the status quo and supports a system built on discrimination. All lives can't matter, when black lives don't. Find a list resources and videos for this episode below. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Matt Lantz about serving the Body of Christ with our spiritual gifts. Matt gave us an overview of the purpose and function of each of the spiritual gifts and how we can go about identifying our gifts and use them to serve in our local churches. What’s the purpose of stewarding our gifts for the glory of God? Matt is a husband, father, and pastor who lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and three children. He’s a graduate of TCU and Dallas Theological Seminary and has been working in full-time ministry since 2000 preparing the way for the Lord Jesus in the lives of men and women. Matt was the founding director of a discipleship program called the Forge at Pine Cove where he spent 12 years helping young men and women learn their identity and steward it well. He has recently moved on from the Forge and is now serving as the Recruitment and Development Pastor and the Associate Pastor of the West Campus at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth, TX. MATT’S RESOURCES Talk to your church Serve Ask a mentor for their insight DEVELOPING AN IDENTITY STATEMENT “It’s less about crafting a cool sounding statement, than it is about understanding in humility who you are and how God designed you (Ephesians 2:10). The identity statement is essentially not a discovery of who you are as much as a declaration of what God has done in creating you. You cannot do that by yourself.” With the help of others, begin to determine these three elements of an identity statement: You are designed in this way… To work with these kinds of people… To accomplish this goal “An identity statement is a statement about design, who the design is for, and what the design is meant to accomplish specifically for the kingdom within the Body of Christ.” CONNECT WITH MATT Website Instagram Twitter DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What are spiritual gifts? What a treat we have for today's episode. If you’ve listened to this podcast for very long at all, you’ve heard me, quoting, almost weekly, the one and only, Eugene Peterson. Just in case anyone is unfamiliar with Eugene Peterson, he was a very much beloved American Pastor, professor, author and poet who passed away in 2018. Eugene wrote over 30 books including The Message, which is a beautiful paraphrasing translation of the Bible into modern everyday language. On today’s episode, we had the incredible honor of sitting down with Eugene’s sweetheart of 60 years, Janice Peterson, as she shares her story, the journey of discovering her own calling, how she met and fell in love with Eugene, and some of her favorite moments with him over their 60 years together. She is an absolute JOY! This conversation was just a GIFT, and we hope and pray you will settle in with your coffee or tea and soak up every sweet story and incredible word of wisdom she shares. In episode 22 I talk about spending lots of money on music programs and plugins - which are programs that plug into Ableton, my music making program - to help me make better sounding music! This is now a priority. I have been buying items from Waves and iZotope and Native Instruments. Now I have to learn how to use these. This explains why I haven't been releasing any new music or been making many beats. Once I get a hang of these programs then I can go back to doing what I really love which is writing lyrics to music and performing them! The beat of the week is called What - I Want It but after I included it in the podcast I realized I have actually had this on the podcast before. Oooops, sorry! I will be more careful in future. I also talk about talk sing as opposed to sing sing! As a chill out day I watched lots of Game of Thrones. Thanks for listening. Fraternalism comes in many forms. Masons often love to enjoy the company of their brothers over a good cigar. Some, so much so, that they even made a club for it. Isn't a cigar a cigar? Say that to Right Worshipful Mike Douglas and you'll get a thorough education on how that is very much NOT the case. Premium hand-rolled cigars are very different from cigarettes, and even from machine-rolled cigars. There are many organizations out there aiming to help make that differentiation and to protect our right to enjoy them. In this episode, our co-hosts are joined by RW Mike Douglas. He shares a bit about himself and his Masonic "career", and then we get a little cloudy. RW Douglas gives us a solid education on the finer points of premium hand-rolled cigars, and what makes them different from other tobacco products. He also tells us about the Brothers of the White Ash, how it began, and what it does. What's in this episode: We are joined by RW Mike Douglas, founder of the Brothers of the White Ash RW Douglas teaches us all about cigars, including what makes them different how they're constructed what makes the varieties different and he also teaches us about the Brothers of the White Ash including how it was founded and what it does Connect with Darrell, Bryan, and Worthy & Well Qualified Facebook Page Facebook Group Instagram Twitter E-mail - worthymasonic@gmail.com Support us by becoming a Patron! It's all about perspective. Often Grand Masters are looked at as if on a pedestal. Surprisingly enough - they're actually real people, and today we get to know a special one. What's So Special About Massachusetts? Though other Grand Lodges may try to contest it, the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts is generally accepted to be the oldest chartered Grand Lodge in the United States. Not only that, it's the 3rd oldest Grand Lodge in the world, behind only Scotland and the United Grand Lodge of England. To be the Grand Master of a place like this must be quite the job (and interesting to boot), right? Well... Today we find out. And in so doing, we get to know the man at the helm of the ship, so to speak, for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In this episode, your co-hosts are (once again) joined by very special guests Most Worshipful Paul Fulton Gleason, Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts, and Bro. Christopher Rooney. In this installment we learn more about Most Worshipful Gleason himself - both his personal life and his Masonic career. First we learn where he hails from and how he found Masonry. Next we delve a little deeper into his career as an officer of both his Blue Lodge and Grand Lodge. MW Gleason shares how Grand Lodge officer candidates are selected and elected - a method that is likely different from many other jurisdictions. He also shares what it's like to govern such a large jurisdiction, comparing and contrasting with nearby neighbors (including Rhode Island). And we also learn some of his biggest challenges and greatest highlights so far from his time as Grand Master. What's in this episode: We are once again joined by MW Gleason and Bro. Rooney We learn all about MW Gleason, including Where he comes from, and how he ended up in MA How he came to join Masonry How he ended up as an officer, both in Blue Lodge and Grand Lodge How candidates for Grand Lodge office are selected and elected. What it's like to govern this jurisdiction And ultimately, what it's like to be Grand Master of Massachusetts Episode Resources: www.MassFreemasonry.org Connect with Darrell, Bryan, and Worthy & Well Qualified Facebook Page Facebook Group Instagram Twitter E-mail - worthymasonic@gmail.com Support us by becoming a Patron! On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I brought back my friend Amy Waters to discuss navigating the holidays when it just feels hard! We covered it all, from unmet holiday expectations to weightier stuff, like gathering together after the loss of a loved one. Amy offers us lots of tips from her perspective as a counselor, and of course, she points us to the hope we have in Jesus as we’re in the thick of the holiday season. So you’ll know her a little better, Amy is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Women’s Bible Study leader, disciple maker, and self-proclaimed theology junkie. Amy spent nearly 10 years on staff at Pine Cove as a Conference Director and it was there that God gave her a passion for ministering to women and families. She earned a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2011 and is currently counseling at the Alethia Counseling Center in Tyler, TX. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Mary Mohler about gratitude and hospitality. We talk about everything from where we see hospitality modeled in the Bible to how the gospel actually enables us to be grateful and hospitable no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. As a veteran hostess, Mary shared some helpful, practical tips for opening our homes, as well as encouragement for those of us who feel a little more burdened as opposed to grateful when it comes to hosting and serving this time of year. We really hope this conversation encourages you to welcome others in as Christ has welcomed us. I think you’ll find Mary as delightful as I did. So you’ll know her a little better, she serves in ministry as the president’s wife at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. She is also the founder and director of Seminary Wives Institute, an academic program for student wives started 20 years ago at Southern Seminary. She has been married to Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. for 35 years. Last week on the Journeywomen Podcast, Catherine Parks and I discussed how confession, repentance, and prayer deepen our friendships in the body of Christ. Today, we’re going to continue the conversation on friendship with Kelly Needham. Kelly and I talked about something that isn’t a super popular topic of conversation, but that we’ve probably all experienced on some level: unhealthy friendships. We ran the gamut on everything from common signs of unhealthy friendships to how the gospel frees us to really love one another earnestly, since love covers over a multitude of sins. So you’ll know her a little better before we get started, Kelly first began writing and speaking to her husband Jimmy’s fan base in 2008 as they traveled together. She is a regular contributor for Revive Our Hearts, and her writing has been featured at Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, The Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission, Eternal Perspectives Ministries, and Crosswalk. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Lauren Weir on the topic of asking intentional questions. Y’all know that question-asking is one of my favorite topics, and let me be the first to say that Lauren absolutely knocked it out of the park. We talked about everything from how we can ask intentional questions in our study of the Word to how we can use intentional questions to know and love one another better. I really believe this conversation will help you in your endeavor to know and love others with the hope of loving them, enjoying them, and leading them to Jesus. So you’ll know her a little better, Lauren is a wife and mother and lover of Jesus with a heart that beats to communicate the goodness and glory of God.
