How the Lectionary Kept Me Christian: Diana Butler Bass on Practicing the Year

What is up, Theology Nerds! So this episode we got my friend Diana Butler Bass back in the house to talk about her brand new book A Beautiful Year and this open online Advent class we're doing together over the next four weeks. Here's the deal: Diana's gonna walk us through how the Christian liturgical year—especially the lectionary—actually saved her faith during the pandemic when the church doors closed. She unpacks the lectionary as a real deep, anti-imperial, feminist, creation-care kind of reading that shows how Jesus is literally challenging Caesar through the gospel accounts. We break down why that matters for how we read the four Gospels and their unique takes on the Incarnation, and this is the crucial part: how all of this ancient story stuff actually orients us for what's happening right now with Christian nationalism and all that ugliness. The Advent class is donation-based (yeah, pay what you want), and you can catch it live each week or grab the video and audio later. Head to homebrewedclasses.com to sign up. Trust me, you're gonna want in on this conversation. Diana Butler Bass, Ph.D., is an award-winning author, popular speaker, inspiring preacher, and one of America's most trusted commentators on religion and contemporary spirituality. UPCOMING ONLINE ADVENT CLASS w/ Diana Butler Bass Join us for a transformative four-week Advent journey exploring how the four gospels speak their own revolutionary word against empire—both in their ancient context under Roman occupation and for our contemporary world shaped by capitalism, militarism, and nationalism.  This course invites you into an alternative calendar and rhythm. Friends of the Rosary,Today, November 21, the Church of Christ celebrates the Memorial of the Presentation of Mary.On September 8, we celebrated the Birthday of Our Lady, and on September 12, the Holy Name. With the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, we complete this Marian cycle, which is parallel with the first three feasts of our Lord in the liturgical calendar: the birth of Christ or Christmas (December 25), the Holy Name of Jesus (January 3), and His Presentation in the Temple (February 2).The historical background of the Presentation of Mary is found in the Protoevangel of St. James (ch. 4:1ff).After an angel had revealed her pregnancy, Anna vowed her future child, Mary, to the Lord. At the age of three, Mary was transferred to the temple, and here, she received her nourishment from the hand of an angel. On this feast day, we meditate on the mystery of Mary's temporary dwelling in the sanctuary of the Old Covenant as a preparation for the approaching season of Advent.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! With Advent upcoming, we can make the most of the liturgical season as a means to prepare for the celebrations of Christmas. In this episode of On Mission, Chris Pierno, Sarah Scalfaro, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. discuss how we can use Advent as a means to spiritually and practically prepare for Christmas.Christmas quickly approaches and with it Advent. With the fast-paced nature of the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Advent can simply pass by. But if we intentionally use the four weeks of Advent, we can find more spiritual fulfillment when Christmas arrives. Advent is often considered the little Lent. What Lent like practices can we incorporate into our Advent observances? For example, we can emphasize more charitable works within our communities, we can fast, and we can take up certain prayer practices to help us pave the way for the Lord. View our Advent Resources page Related On Mission episodes:Feasts of AdventAdvent ResourcesAdvent From the Ad Infinitum blog:A Light in DarknessBeyond a TwinkleMore posts about the Advent Check out the main Saints and Feast Days websiteDownload the App on the App Store or Google Play  Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify On Mission is produced by the Catholic Apostolate Center. With weekly themes of hope, love, joy, and peace, Neilson invites readers to slow down and prepare their hearts for the birth of Jesus—especially in a season often filled with pressure, comparison, and exhaustion.Through honest storytelling, she reflects on the tension many women feel: the desire to create meaningful traditions while feeling overwhelmed, underprepared, or spiritually dry. Christmas Angels becomes a gentle guide—a reminder that Jesus is the real gift, and He meets us in our mess, our weariness, and our longing. Neilson's angel paintings—already beloved—add a layer of sacred beauty and wonder to the experience. Readers will also explore Old Testament prophecies, the nativity narratives, and heartfelt prayers that encourage a deeper connection with God during the holiday season.Anne Neilson is well known for her ethereal Angel Series, which are inspiring reflections of her faith and recognized for their stunning use of color. In response to demand for more access to her acclaimed Angel paintings, Neilson published two coffee table books and launched Anne Neilson Home, a growing collection of luxury home products. Juan is prepping to preach a sermon so we're helping him! We wander through the strange intersection where humor, faith, and hope all try to share the same crosswalk without causing a theological traffic jam. We chat about what actually goes on behind the scenes of podcasting, how we pretend to prepare sermons, and why sneaking humor into preaching should probably count as a spiritual gift. Somewhere between laughing at ourselves and trying to sound wise, we tackle hope, Christmas, Advent, and the many creative ways humans navigate the emotional roller coaster between despair and optimism. We even take a stab at explaining the difference between faith and hope, mostly by admitting that perspective matters and that ours isn’t always the most reliable. With our usual mix of jokes, confessions, and “please don’t quote us on this,” we reflect on everyday struggles and why keeping hope alive in a complicated world feels a lot like trying to keep a candle lit in a wind tunnel.

On today's episode, we're talking with investigative journalist Ross Halperin about his new book Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land. Ross takes us on a fascinating journey from academic research on impunity—the unsolved homicides plaguing American cities—to Honduras, where he discovers an unexpected solution. We dig into why the US solve rate for murders hovers around 60% compared to over 90% in other wealthy democracies, and spoiler alert: it's not about more surveillance or militarization. The real issue is witness testimony, and that requires trust. Ross introduces us to Kurt and Carlos, whose charity work proves that community trust, built through years of genuine service and investment, is the key to bridging the gap between communities and law enforcement. We talk about how faith animates their work without being preachy, the humility required to stay open to criticism, and why top-down solutions often miss what actually moves people to speak up. It's a conversation about what it means to bear witness—not just to tell a story, but to show up and be trusted. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Ross Halperin is an investigative journalist and author of Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land. A Harvard University graduate, he worked on Wall Street before transitioning to research on criminal justice, where he worked under Mark A.R. Kleiman, one of the world's leading criminal-justice scholars. His interest in unsolved homicides and systemic violence grew from this research, which revealed that the United States has dramatically lower murder solve rates than comparable wealthy democracies. That research led Halperin to a presentation by Kurt Biehl at a summit organized by criminologist David Kennedy, sparking a years-long investigation into how one community in Central America tackled violence through trust-building and faith. Bear Witness is the result of his embedded reporting in Honduras, exploring how real change happens not through top-down mandates, but through patient commitment to community relationships. Halperin's own commitment to community building is evident in his work closer to home as well—he led a campaign to reconstruct the library in his hometown, reflecting his belief in the power of institutions and gathering spaces. In this heartfelt holiday episode, Bobby Cooley and Meg Landi welcome Hannah Bush from Preteen Journey to talk about something deeper than traditions: Family Holiday Habits, and especially the practice of Advent. While the holiday season is packed with traditions, events, and cultural pressure, it's easy for families to get swept up in the noise and miss the holiness at the center of it all. Together, we explore how Advent can become a grounding habit that helps families pause, reflect, and intentionally prepare their hearts for Christ's coming. Hannah shares: The true purpose of Advent—what it is, why it matters, and how it reshapes our focus during a busy season. Practical and grace-filled resources that help families build healthy holiday habits from day one of the season all the way into the new year. How the meaningful moments we choose to prioritize shape generations, influencing the way our children will one day lead their own families in faith. This episode is an invitation to slow down, reset, and discover holiday habits that draw your family toward what's holy, not just what's expected. Join us for a conversation full of encouragement, intentionality, and a whole lot of hope for the season ahead.Download your FREE Preteen & Family Holiday Advent GuideConnect with Hannah from Preteen Journey Website: https://preteenjourney.org/ InstagramFind More FREE Advent resources here.About Empowered Homes Who we are? Advent season is about “waiting in anticipation” for Jesus' coming. In the Western world, we wait by throwing Christmas parties, buying presents, and trying to avoid the hustle and bustle. In this episode, Josh and Christi share ways of embracing presence this Christmas — both with your spouse and kids, and with God as well. The second episode in our family systems series explores the overfunctioning and underfunctioning dynamic, the exhausting pattern where one partner takes on too much responsibility while the other does less than their share. The more one overfunctions (making decisions, remembering everything, managing household and parenting), the more the other underfunctions (waiting to be told, checking out, not initiating). This isn't about laziness or control, it's a reciprocal dance where you're creating each other's behavior. Christa breaks down how certain Enneagram types are more prone to overfunctioning (2s, 1s, 3s, 6s) or underfunctioning (9s, 5s, 7s, 4s), though any type can fall into either role. The way out? Overfunctioners must stop doing so much and create space. Underfunctioners must start doing without being asked. Both must recognize they're creating the pattern together. We talk about all of that right here! This episode is part of the ongoing family systems series also running on Instagram. For a deeper dive, tune in to Apple or join our E+M Collective here!
