I've been following our special guest for over 10 years, and his insights are mind-blowing. But before we get into it, let me share a bit of my own journey. I used to have a job in a physical therapy company, working on the fitness component. One day, the owner handed me a book called "Movement," and he said, "If you can understand this book, you'll know as much as I do." Little did I know, this book would lead me to today's guest. Our guest, Greg Cook, is a physical therapist, a strength coach, and the inventor of the Functional Movement Screen. That book, "Movement," was a game-changer, and it laid the foundation for what we're about to uncover. In this episode, we'll explore how your mind plays a crucial role in your physical wellbeing. We'll talk about patterns, adaptation, and how understanding your body can lead to a healthier you. Greg's work has impacted people worldwide, transcending language barriers. And now, with an accessible online course, he's simplifying complex concepts for coaches and individuals alike. But here's the kicker: It's not just about the physical. We'll discuss how your body's movements are connected to your overall health, and how making the right changes can transform your life. So, join us for an enlightening conversation with Greg Cook. We'll help you uncover the hidden patterns in your body and set you on the path to a healthier, more vibrant you.

Living in 2022 is great: we can have almost anything we want delivered to us by simply swiping our phones; however is this much automation a good thing? As humans we were all born knowing how to move, but modern society has evolved to a point where movement is not necessary, the result is that many of us are simply moving less. When we move less, we lose our ability to move well which could result in an injury when we exercise. Gray Cook is a physical therapist and strength coach who has helped many elite athletes to dominate their sport. Years ago, Gray identified the lack of coordinated movement as primary reason why many athletes fail to achieve success or become injured; as a result, he and his colleague, Dr. Lee Burton developed the Functional Movement Screen as a system for classifying movement ability. Gray talks about the Functional Movement Screen and how it can be used to identify potential muscle imbalances that could become an injury. Originally. recorded in the fall of 2017, learn all about the role of functional movement in your strength training program on this episode of All About Fitness. The Functional Movement System (FMS) rocked the fitness industry a few decades ago with their introduction to the Functional Movement Screen and the power behind its uses in a clinical & fitness setting. We at Fitness Lying Down leaned heavily on this screen and what it told us about our clients and how to adequately create a program for them and their movement needs. Fast forward to the present day and hear why we aren't implementing this tool at FLD and how DVRT, in our eyes, has made it acceptable to skip using such a valuable movement screen!

The human body is made to move, all of the joint structures and muscle attachments are aligned to allow our muscles to harness energy from gravity while walking. When 4 legged animals are born, they know how to walk almost immediately; when a human is born, it takes about a year to learn how to walk. When was the last time that you saw a baby doing crunches or biceps curls? The human body is programmed to move as an integrated system of many muscles working together so exercise programs that focus on one muscle group at a time work against our inherent physiology. Dr. Lee Burton is a founder Functional Movement Systems and one of the leading experts on understanding how and why that humans are designed to move. Dr. Burton helped create the Functional Movement Screen to provide a system for coaches and personal trainers to help athletes train with a lower risk of injury. On this episode, Dr. Burton talks about how the body is designed to function and shares why it is so important to take a movement-first approach with your strength training program. In this episode, I had two amazing researchers, Dr. Meghan Warren (epidemiologist/physical therapist from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and research specialist/athletic trainer, Dr. Monica Lininger from NAU, who extensively researched the Functional Movement Screen and movement screens in general. Movement screens can be incredibly useful clinical tools, especially depending on patient population (for athletes who may need a relatively objective test to view their movement quality from), but they also have some limitations. In this episode, we cover what movement screens are useful for, how they maybe shouldn't be used, as well as the potential impact of asymmetries as more predictive of injury than low scores on a movement screen.

It’s time to poke the bear! In this, the first of a two-part series, Dr. J and Gregory take a critical look at functional training. They’ll evaluate some of the conventional thinking around the “F” word, turn it upside down and inside out, and present some enlightening research that’ll really make you reconsider your assumptions. Finally, they’ll redefine what it really means to train functionally. Join Fitness for Consumption in part one of this episode in which they stir up some real controversy. We explore the emergence of functional training in the fitness world and examine some of the claims and theories of modern day proponents. Are many of the accepted beliefs regarding functional training supported by credible, empirical science? Or, do they germinate from the whims and unsubstantiated theories of many current fitness gurus? To answer this, they dive deep into some research that begins to cast doubt on some of those theories. Dr. Juris shares some of his real-life experiences encountering functional training, and together, we offer a new definition that may change your approach to training functionally. Topics discussed: History and emergence of functional training practices Questions that begin to challenge the conventional thinking on functional training Landmark research that raises questions about current approaches to function The difference between a functional process and a functional outcome A new perspective on functional training Glossary Functional outcome - An approach to exercise in which the focus is on the transfer of the training effect to objectively measured goals. Functional process - An approach to exercise in which the focus is on the organization of movement. References Butler, Robert J, et al (2010). Was wird uns erwarten? Welche Rolle spielt ein Coach in der Zukunft? Personal Training & Coaching: Informationen und ein kostenloses Beratungsgespräch gibt es auf www.thinkflowgrow.com Shownotes: Eberhard ist Wissensvermittler: „Geschichten erzählen“ ist wichtig, um Wissen zu vermitteln. Große Redner erzählen Geschichten! Ground-Based Movement bzw.

Flexibility is the type and range of motion you can achieve passively. Passively means that you are not under load, and you are not controlling it. For instance, if you lie on your back and someone pushes your leg up to the farthest it can go.Mobility is how much range of motion that you have actively, meaning you can use it. Flexibility and stability make mobility. You have to control the flexibility so that you can use it. So the big difference here is that flexibility is passive while mobility is active. We use the Functional Movement Screen to measure mobility. For the general population, a good dynamic warm-up and good exercise are sufficient to improve their mobility. Along with these, you have to manage their lifestyle to keep them safe and strong enough. In real life and when programming for the general population, mobility is more valuable than flexibility. You can use it in your normal day to day activities and thus improves the quality of life.Key TakeawaysCOVID gym update (01:42)What is the difference between flexibility and mobility ((08:05)Why mobility is more valuable than flexibility in real life (12:02)How we use the Functional Movement Screen to measure mobility (12:54)Taking a holistic approach towards achieving mobility (18:42)How managing lifestyle may be better for mobility than any other correctives (23:44)How to we work on mobility for our clients through in the gym (26:27)Additional Resources:www.AlloyPersonalTraining.comLearn About The Alloy Franchise Opportunity---------You can find the podcast on Apple, Google, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts. If you haven’t already, please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts!

The goal of The Win Your Life Podcast is to illuminate the intersection between prevention and performance. The fitness industry is focused on performance and not always concerned with prevention. On the other hand, our health care system is focused, by necessity, on combatting the overwhelming amount of disease, illness and injury in our society. At the intersection of prevention and performance, there is a group of coaches, medical professionals, business leaders, athletes, and thought leaders that are working to help you Win Your Life. In this series, we are addressing the idea of 'Universal Prescriptions', the notion that there is a best way for us all to exercise, eat, sleep, breath and live. In this episode we are discussing whether or not fitness programming should be customized to the individual and why with Ashley Stiles, the Director of Operations for The Power House MN, and NHL Strength & Conditioning Coach, Christian Burrus. Christian, Ashley & Max all work together on the Adapt Fitness app that provides customized programming on a daily basis based on goals, training history, equipment, daily recovery and how much time you have to train. At completion of his studies Dr. Tommy played professional baseball for three years with teams such as the Schaumburg Flyers, Tyler Roughnecks and the LA Dodgers. After his career was abruptly ended from a rare infection in his throwing shoulder, Dr. Tommy developed his own baseball performance company providing over 11,000 baseball training sessions for baseball enthusiasts from ages six to thirty. Additionally, he expanded his practice of personal training, sports performance training and rehabilitation of all types of soft tissue injuries. Dr. Tommy was drawn to chiropractic because he realized there was a higher element missing from the healing, performance process and proper function of the human body in the innate intelligence and the nervous system: brain, brain stem and spinal cord. That paramount observation led him to obtain his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Life University, (a 4-year program), in Marietta, Georgia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. As the son of renowned Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John who played in the Major Leagues for 26 seasons and was the first person to comeback in 1974 from the revolutionary surgery named the Tommy John Surgery, it is not surprising that Dr. Tommy developed a passion for proper healing and physical function as he witnessed firsthand the outcomes of injury, innovation and principled healing. Joints in the human body are designed to either provide stability or allow uninhibited mobility. There are a number of variables such as being in a seated position for an extended period of time, doing the same exercises repeatedly or a pre-existing injury that can change how your body functions. Gray Cook is a physical therapist and strength coach who helped create the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) in order to have a systematic method for identifying the inefficient movement patterns that could cause an injury. What does Gray Cook have in common with the TV show Moonshiners? You'll have to listen to find out! The FMS is now used by professional football, military special operations units and fire departments as a tool to identify potential injuries before they happen. On this episode of All About Fitness Gray describes why he created the FMS and how it can be used to help eliminate the risk of injury. If you love to exercise but have experienced frequent injuries it could be due to a restricted movement pattern, the FMS can help you identify the restriction so you can determine the best exercises to help you optimize your performance. In Episode 68 of the Heads 'N Tales podcast I interview Parabolic Performance & Rehab Performance Director, Angelo Todaro, CSCS, FMS, USAW. Rather than talking about persevering after injury, illness or another obstacle, Angelo and I discuss how to prevent injuries from happening in the first place. Obviously, it is impossible to quantify injuries prevented, but we discuss what goes into building a body of resilience. We use the elements involved in building a house as an analogy, which includes the foundation, support beams, electrical panel and the esthetic exterior. Angelo is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA Certification Commission and a certified Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting. Before joining Parabolic Performance and Rehab, Angelo owned and operated a very successful private training business in Bergen county New Jersey. He has held the position of strength and conditioning coach with the San Diego Padres in their minor league system and with a United States Tennis Association regional training center. He has also completed coaching internships with the University of Connecticut Strength and Conditioning department in Storrs, Connecticut, and at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Human Performance Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Building a Body of Resilience Foundation: The foundation is the most important part of building a body of resilience, but it is also the least sexy. The foundation is comprised of general health markers that include, blood profile, organs, hormones, and immune system. Angelo recommends going to see your doctor to getting blood work and a general physical to find out if there are any glaring issues. In addition, having solid general movement patterns is a key principle to the athlete's foundation. Angelo and his team at Parabolic use the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to assess their athletes in this domain. The FMS tests 7 movement patterns which include a deep squat, in-line lunge, hurdle step, pushup stability, shoulder stability, leg raise and rotary stability. The key to the test is that all movements can be performed without pain. Click the link above to learn more about the FMS. The team at Parabolic also utilize methods from the Postural Restoration Institute to address foundational issues. I have been doing some of these postural restoration exercises with Parabolic Physical Therapist, Dr. Danielle Clarke and have been seeing great results in my knee rehab. Some of the exercises involve inflating a balloon, which sounds bizarre, but I must say, I now feel the best I have felt since before my surgery. Overall, the foundation of a resilient body includes having good general health, good general movement and a good attitude. Support Beams: The support beams include stability/mobility. These two requirements for both of these domains will vary by sport and position. During this portion of our conversation Angelo and have a sports specialization discussion. He mentions Urban Meyer's tastes for multi-sport athletes in his recruiting classes. Angelo also mentions the importance of prioritization when playing multiple sports and just playing for fun sometimes. This is something that I feel athletes get out of touch with as they get older. Angleo with some of his NFL guys. Electrical Panel: Angelo gives us a brief lesson on the role of nervous system adaptations. Furnace: The furnace element of the resilient athlete is right in Angelo's wheelhouse and he dropped some serious knowledge bombs in this area. In this part of our conversation we discuss nutrition, recovery and supplements. In regard to nutrition, Angelo teaches us about why food quality is most important, portion size and the roles proteins, fats and carbs play in fueling the body during workouts and recovery. Angelo and the team at Parabolic structure the nutrition program for their NFL combine athletes and use a company called Eat Clean Bro to ensure they are getting the highest quality of nutrition. Food as fuel is obviously a major contributor to an athlete's recovery, but sleep quality is just as important. Angelo mentioned how important sleep is on multiple occasions throughout the interview. Specifically, he says athletes should aim to get at least 9-10 hours of sleep to properly recover. This is because you don't get stronger in the gym, you actually get weaker. You get stronger while you sleep because your body is recovering. Technology like Bioforce can provide insight into recovery based on an athletes heart rate variations. Angelo is also very knowledgeable about supplements and goes in depth on powder protein, creatine, fish oil and its benefits in brain function, hormonal function and inflammation reduction. He highlights the importance of trying to find these supplements in their purest forms. One way to do this is by looking for the NSF Certification on the labels, which proves what is listed in the ingredients on the label actually correlates to contents of the container. Esthetics: Looks can sometimes be deceiving. Just like a termite-ridden house, an athlete with a sinking foundation, deteriorating support beams and a smoking furnace is doomed. Angelo said that youth is wasted on the young because they never think anything will ever happen to them. To some degree, athletes need this mentality to perform without fear, but those who take a proactive approach to make the necessary repairs will reap the benefits of an extended athletic career. Injury is sometimes unavoidable so we end this topic of discussion with one on returning to training after an injury. We finish the episode by listing the characteristics of Angelo's most successful athletes. Angelo notes their willingness to sacrifice a social life/"career" and their good relationships with failure as the two most notable traits. During his free time, Angelo enjoys training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, going rock climbing, and participating in many other combat based and outdoor sports. He is also an avid fan of Mixed Martial Arts and rarely misses the opportunity to watch any MMA event in the area, professional and amateur alike. "Chef Ange" has recently started filming some of his recipes. His first two episodes can be seen below. Angelo and I plan on doing a nutrition specific episode to go more in depth on a complicated topic in the near future. Chef Ange walks you through how to make a super simple and delicious dish. It's estimated that 80% of the population will suffer from back pain at some point in their life—and most people are left frustrated and confused about how to actually heal. June 2, 2014 - One of James' favorite guys to hear speak in the fitness industry is Gray Cook, one of the guys behind the Functional Movement Screen. Gray has an amazing way of putting complex concepts into simple, easy to understand terms that James really admires. The other day James was driving around listening to a recorded presentation he had done when he dropped another gem - Perception drives movement function and movement function drives perception. This is a very profound concept that James has understood for a while but had trouble explaining to riders. It is so important, though, because it explains how your equipment and bike set up can negatively change how you perform without you even realizing it. This podcast is part of a larger blog post. The below podcast goes into more detail than the blog post, so we encourage you to listen before drawing too many conclusions from the notes. James has posted his notes and discussion on his blog post. You can read them and get a good feel for what he is trying to explain.
