The Slamfest Podcast brings the premier rock concert pregaming experience from the parking lot to the podcasting airwaves. Episode 236 - Brad saw Y&T for the first time, on the 30th Anniversary of Black Tiger Tour, at The Token Lounge in Westland, MI on 3/9/12. He welcomes mega-Y&T fan, Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni, back to the podcast to discuss this show and Y&T in general. For the Band on the Bill Spotlight, they dive into Y&T's first two compilation albums, The Best of '80 - '85, from 1990 and The Ultimate Collection, from 2001. They choose which one they would recommend to someone who had never heard Y&T. In addition, they come up with their own 17-song compilation they wish would've come out in 2001. After a Slamfest Tip of the Week, they are faced with a "Which Side are you On?", Side 1 or Side 2 from Y&T's third studio album, Earthshaker, from 1981.Music in this episode by:Y&TBon JoviMotorheadAC/DCBlack SabbathKissOzzyVisit the Slamfest Podcast online at: https://slamfest-podcast.simplecast.comRequest to join the Slamfest Podcast private Facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/slamfestpodcastE-mail us at : slamfestpodcast@gmail.comVisit Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni at Growin' Up Rock and Podcast Rock City:https://growinuprock.com/https://www.facebook.com/growinuprock

The most interesting thing about Jonathan England isn't that he is an Earthshaker; a precise guide to rise through the 5 levels of consciousness to the highest levels of purpose and source alignment; a beach slacker- turned hugely successful real estate investor and trainer; a man who has invested $500K in his own personal development or an acclaimed author and workshop leader -- it's that he's putting his principles and beliefs into action by creating an entirely self-sustained consciousness-driven living complex in Costa Rica where people live together in mutual support, spiritual freedom and purposeful prosperity. The prototype village, EarthWaking Eco-Village, is complete and functioning, with five more marked out around a central hub being carved from the tropical lushness. It is here where Jonathan is building a culture where people live lives directed by spirit and alignment, in service to each other and to the greater whole, around a central prosperous economy. Residents live by what he teaches: take 100% responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, actions, and reality while working in harmony with nature and each other. But as he is said many times, he is no one's guru. He has simply given people the keys to Waking Up (Before They Die) so that they embody the God force that animates their spiritual, as well as physical, selves.

Yes, Sadfans, we're giving over our 75th episode to the unsung heroes of every band that ever set foot in a recording studio or onto a stage - those apparently indefatigable timekeepers without whom there would be little or no momentum. Stuck behind the kit at the back of the stage, these are the artisans of the hard rock and heavy metal engine room. Whether it's a sense of rhythm combined with a diver's boot (h/t to Gillan's Mick Underwood), the professorial science of Neil Peart, or the tour de force blunt trauma approach of Bonzo, these are the men and women who provide the metronome when you're standing with your feet apart and headbanging your way to an early aneurysm. Naturally, the list of noteworthy sticksmen is ineffably long, so consider this part one of a theme the Sadmen will undoubtedly return to in episodes to come. But for this episode the lads have picked three drummers who have, to some extent, shaped the technical art of hitting the skins with a lump of wood. First up, Phil Collins in his second outing with Genesis for 1972's Foxtrot. Having already helped to shape the Charterhouse proggers' sound on his debut release, Nursery Cryme the year before, Collins, Banks, Gabriel and Rutherford return a year later with a release that would achieve immortality in the genre. The boys' next stop was six years later, as Y&T - then known still as Yesterday and Today - drop their sophomore 1978 release Struck Down. Though three years away from the standard-bearing Earthshaker, this is the album that perhaps best showcases the undeniable talent of their man on the kit, Leonard Haze. And the lads round off proceedings with Jeff Pocaro and TOTO's commercial juggernaut IV, which boasts the ghost notes on album opener Rosanna that to this day separate the men from the boys when it comes to high drumming art. Enjoy!

Well, it was only a matter of time. After swerving Back In Black for 162 albums, the hand of fate intervened as the Tico Torres Tombola of Topics and Themes spat out the ball that correlated to a theme simply called "Black". With most of hard rock and heavy metal's behemoths already admitted to the Enter Sadmen Hall of Fame only four albums have occupied the #1 slot in the list - Priest's British Steel, reviewed in Episode 1, spent a week there before being toppled following Episode 2 by Moving Pictures from Rush, which itself occupied the slot for just a week before it was casually usurped by Zeppelin's IV. For 39 weeks it seemed that no matter what the boys threw at it, Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones were never going to be overtaken. And then the unstoppable force of IV met the immovable object of Ride The Lightning in Episode 42 and it all changed. But, faithful followers, we all knew that somewhere round the corner lurked a grown man in a school uniform brandishing a Gibson SG, four of his mates and the blackest of all the Black albums. Given the theme, the lads could hardly justify sidestepping it again, and so Mark duly deferred to moral obligation. Joining the 31 million seller on the show were two albums that, even in such austere company, would have every right to expect to be challenging for a place in the Top 10. Both released in 1982, the episode rounds out with the Scorpions' Blackout and Y&T's Black Tiger - two albums that in the hands of most other bands might reasonably be considered the undisputed high watermarks. But the boys tackle both juggernauts knowing that their predecessors, Lovedrive and Earthshaker respectively, cast long shadows ...
Kon'nichiwa! Join us this week as we once again make a journey to the far east to the land of the rising sun. This time we jump back to the decade when the western world was introduced to the thunder from Osaka and the lightning from Tokyo. A time when the samurai wielded electric guitars and made the statement to the world that they were a force to reckoned with… This week we welcome the return of the shogun – 80's Japanese Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. We do apologize in advance to Japanese and Japanese-speaking people for all mispronunciations and extreme naivete of Japanese culture and history! This is completely a Westerner's take on the 1980's Japanese heavy metal where many of us were first turned on to this country's amazingly talented rock musicians. Songs this week include:Seikima II - “蝋人形の館 – Wax Doll House” from Worst (1989)EZO - “Kiss Of Fire” from E-Z-O (1987)Heavy Metal Army - “Heavy Metal Army” from Heavy Metal Army (1981)Vow Wow - “Nightless City” from Vow Wow III (1986)Dead End - “The Damned Thing” from Ghost Of Romance (1987)Anthem - “Light It Up” from Tightrope (1986)Earthshaker - “T-O-K-Y-O” from Midnight (1984)Blizard - “Fly High” from Blizard (1987)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/
At the end of Episode 46, the Tico Torres Tombola of Topics and Themes spat out 'Four Elements', meaning our trio of trusty adventurers each had to find an album that had a clear and non-tenuous link to one or more of the four elements of life. Yeah, we had to look them up, too. But at least we can save you the bother of also heading to Google or Wiki. Fire, Earth, Air and Water. After a false start which saw Steve and Richard sniggering at the lack of creativity evident in Mark's original choice (Y&T's Earthshaker) the lads reconvened for a chinwag over three albums that had a claim to fame without actually being all that famous in their own right. First up, Down To Earth - Rainbow's 4th album, and their first without the Little Wizard's disproportionately enormous voice. Though it escaped broad critical acclaim at the time it did spawn arguably one of the all time great pop rock songs in Since You've Been Gone. The big question was whether the rest of the album could keep pace with its signature song. Next came the eponymous 1990 debut from FireHouse (yes, that incongruous capital in the middle of their name is deliberate, thank you) - an album that bagged the band the 'Favorite New Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist' award at the 1992 American Music Awards. But while their star burned bright in their native America, the UK and pretty much the whole of the rest of Planet Earth passed them by without so much as a sideways glance. And bringing up the rear was the some-might-say-cheeky-others-like-Mark-might-say-twattish Ginger and his post-Punk band The Wildhearts with their world-hating wink-and-a-smile 1993 effort Earth vs. The Wildhearts.

This week, join us as we speak to pioneering all-femme Japanese hard rock/heavy metal band Show-Ya! Dropping no less than 8 solid albums of smooth yet punchy keyboard and guitar driven hard rock leaning ever more towards metal between 1985 and 1990, bluesy frontwoman Keiko Terada and "the three Mikis" ("Captain" Nakamura, "Sun-Go" Igarashi and "Mittan" Tsunoda) alongside Satomi Senba on bass were so well beloved as to be tapped for a major Coca Cola campaign in the days when rock and metal were still considered "scary" persona non grata to mainstream society. Over the course of a mere 5 years, the unusually prolific band subtly shifted style from their very anime style early sound to something more akin to American metal and even a bit of the Hollywood Guns N Roses sound (on the English lyriced songs of Hard Way) before Terada departed for a successful solo career. Soldiering on for two further releases with fellow J-rock maiden Steffanie (Borges) and the punkier Yoshino, Show-Ya finally closed up shop in the 90's. But a 20th reunion tour of the original lineup in 2005 led to renewed interest in the band, inclusive of two successive sets of remasters (the latter with bonus tracks like the aforementioned Coke commercial, surprisingly catchy tune that it is), and by 2012 they were back in studio, releasing material that sounded surprisingly like their mid 80s heyday, and even an all covers album that features their takes on hits from nearly every great J-rock and J-metal band of the 80's and 90's, from Luna Sea, X and Kyosuke Himuro's Boowy to Loudness, Earthshaker, Glay and L'Arc en Ciel. Now partnering with Blizard's Nozumu Wakai as songwriting partner and producer, they've released an album that simultaneously sounds familiar and uniquely new in Showdown, which gets international release through Metalville this coming month. Join us as we have a brief if entertaining and decidedly good humored chat with Keiko Terada and "Captain" Miki Nakamura (plus surprise guest Mirai Kawashima of Sigh, of all people!) only here on Third Eye Cinema! There are singers, there are vocalists, there are front men, and there are a very small few who own all three categories. Jon Howard, of Imonolith is that guy. I've been a fan since the early 2000's when Jon's old band, Threat Signal, made a serious splash on a website designed to help you discover the world's best talent. At the time, Threat Signal was riding the top of the metal charts at Garage band, and garnering attention from every heavy music media outlet in the world. Who were these masters from Hamilton Ontario? Where did the come from and what musical sorcery was this?Turns out, Jon and his band were just sort of winging it. Nobody in the band really knew what they had, but amazingly, they were heard by the right ears, and transported around the world, creating this mystery and weird legend that helped Jon fully form, sprout his less than angelic wings, and never fully place his feet on the ground again. Our chat was utter madness and I had an amazing time... not gonna lie. That said, we still live in a world where the internet isn't our friend and occasionally we get audio lags and drop offs, so excuse us in advance.... however, most importantly, we have a righteous conversation and I got a new friend out of the deal.If you didn't know Jon before, or if truly brutal heavy metal scares you, well... take another listen and consider that maybe, just maybe you've been missing out. This is my interview with the voice of destruction, rage, and anger. This week Lizzie sits down with news consumer-turned-author Jodie Jackson… Jodie is on a mission to change the media; her recent book “You Are What You Read” is an invitation to become a part of this movement. Jodie has spent the last decade researching the psychological impact of the news. Through her work, she has shown that the excessive negativity in the news creates a distorted and harmful picture of the world. Jodie believes that we need a better balance in the news and shows why we must widen the media lens to include stories of solutions, progress and development in order to improve our psychological & sociological wellbeing, the news industry and, ultimately, the world. Lizzie and Jodie discuss the negative mental health impact of the constant flow of negative news, due to the way technology and media has evolved over recent decades, and how we can curate our own “news diet” to be more conscious of what we are digesting while still being informed in more mentally healthy way.

Episode Description: Steven speaks with Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon about some of his earliest musical memories and the band's newest album release "Shock." We go album-by-album to discuss what Frank's thoughts were at the time of recording. Because we are such huge Tesla fans, as an added bonus we thought why not throw in our top 5 Tesla tunes to rock along the way. What's The Story: Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1981 by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon as Earthshaker, and later City Kidd. Lead vocalist Jeff Keith, drummer Troy Luccketta, and guitarist Tommy Skeoch joined them by 1984. By 1986, the band had changed from its glam-derived sound to a 'rootsier' direction under a new name: "Tesla." The band disbanded in 1996 with members devoting themselves to solo projects before re-forming in 2000. Tommy Skeoch departed the band in 2006 and was replaced by Dave Rude. Tesla have sold 14 million albums in the United States. I heard the first single "Modern Day Cowboy from the band's debut album upon its release and was hooked. When I saw the band in a small club in Atlanta on that very first tour for the debut album, I loved everything about the bands no-frills approach to rock n roll and I never looked back. Over the years, I have seen the band countless times and purchased all the band's releases of original material. This band is rock n roll done right; from its heavy driven rockers to its meaningful ballads. Love This Band!! The guys are joined this week by DBG VIP The Rockin' Donkey for a Y&T Discussion. Formed in 1973 in Oakland, California, Y&T were originally known as Yesterday and Today. After two good, but poorly received, albums for London Records the band, featuring singer/guitarist Dave Meneketti, guitarist Joey Alves, bassist Phil Kennemore, and drummer Leonard Haze, were signed to A&M Records. 1981's Earthshaker would kick off the newly re-branded Y&T and launch a trilogy of albums that formed the backbone of their concert set list and solidified their fan base. Rounding out that trilogy were 1982's Black Tiger and 1983's Mean Streak. While these albums had moderate success, the higher positions of the Billboard charts continued to elude Y&T. That theme would continue with 1984's In Rock We Trust but the tide would change with the release of the song Summertime Girls. Originally appearing as the lone studio track on the live Open Fire album, the song would get added to 1985's Down for the Count and give Y&T some serious commercial attention. That attention would be fleeting however as Summertime Girls remains their biggest hit single and Y&T was subsequently dropped from A&M Records. Y&T 1987 saw the band re-emerge on the rock-heavy Geffen label. Original drummer Leonard Haze was out and new drummer Jimmy Degrasso was in. Contagious had every ingredient from the keyboard to the hooks to the hairspray that should've assured bigger success. Unfortunately, the guiding hand of John Kalodner couldn't pull Y&T to the success of which he had with Aerosmith. After releasing 1990's Ten album (featuring new guitarist Stef Burns replacing Alves), Y&T took a long break as the new wave of Grunge music started to take over. 1995 saw the band return with Musically Incorrect; an album that had solid material yet certainly was not flavor-of-the-week fare. That trend would continue with 1997's aptly titled Endangered Species. Y&T would go on an extended hiatus as guitarist/singer Dave Meneketti focused on a solo career. The band would come back to rave reviews in 2010 with Facemelter (featuring new drummer Mike Vanderhule); an album that showed a serious return to form for the band. Tragically, this would be the final album for bassist Phil Kennemore who succumbed to cancer during the touring cycle for the album. Y&T would soldier on with replacement bassist Brad Lang before being replaced in 2016 by Aaron Leigh. The band had two more tragic losses in 2016 as original drummer Leonard Haze and longtime sound man Tom Size both passed away. In this in-depth discussion your hosts and guest discuss the history of the band and go through each album in the studio discography. Favorite and least favorite tracks are discussed as well as album covers and lyrics. Underlining much of the conversation are theories of why this amazing band never achieved bigger success. It's a long, fun discussion about a band that continues to wow crowds 40 years after the release of their first album. We hope you enjoy Y&T Discussion - Ep263 and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! I loved that so much Kiss came up and the Casablanca insight. Also, I really enjoyed the Ratt/Alexi show! I had forgotten how great Ratt was. I'll be looking for some of those songs you guys played. I will going back and listening to more past shows (more than likely all of the past shows) as well as looking forward to your new ones. Thanks guys! This 'cast continues to explore the influences of Widespread Panic's music.Michael Stanley's second solo album, Friends and Legends, is featured prominently this time around. The band Stanley was playing with on this album was a who's who of mid-seventies rock; Dan Fogelberg, Richie Furay, David Sanborn, Bill Szymczyk, and Joe Walsh (AND his band Barnstorm). J. Geils even got in on the act by producing the saxophone tracks. It also was produced in my current stomping grounds of Colorado... Let's Get the Show on the Road is one of my favorite Panic covers and Funky is the Drummer is a crazy jam/rap that JB has slipped into a couple of times.I really had alot of fun putting this one together - turn it up and invite the friends over... and tear the roof of the sucker!Let's Get the Show on the RoadMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"She Caught the KatyAlbert Kingfrom the album "Lovejoy"Funky is the DrummerMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof of the Sucker)Parliamentfrom the album "Mothership Connection"Wang Dang DoodleKoko Taylorfrom the album "The Earthshaker"Can't Find My Way HomeBlind Faithfrom the album "Blind Faith"Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and BurningHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Knocking 'round the ZooJames Taylor and the Original Flying Machinefrom the album "James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine"Shouldn't Have Took More than You GaveDave Masonfrom the album "Alone Together"TipitinaProfessor Longhairfrom the album "New Orleans Piano"John's OtherHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Just Like a WomanBob Dylanfrom the album "Blonde on Blonde"SpoonfulWillie Dixonfrom the album "I am the Blues"GladTrafficfrom the album " John Barleycorn Must Die"Let's Get it OnMarvin Gayefrom the album "Let's Get it On"DOWNLOAD the cast here(right click to save to hard drive):Everyday Companion Podcast #69Click here to subscribe through iTunes.
