Metal-året 1982 blev et allerhelvedes hårdt af slagsen med Metallica og Mercyful Fates første udgivelser. Venom beredte sporet for black metal og Accept inspirerede til speed- og thrash metal. 1982 var også året, hvor Ozzy-guitaristen Randy Rhoads omkom ved en tragisk flyulykke, og hvor der udkom store og vigtige album fra blandt andre Iron Maiden, Judas Priest og The Scorpions. Studievært Jens "Jam" Rasmussen gennemgår dette helvedes interessante heavy metal-år sammen med vores tre faste studiegæster: Steffen Jungersen, Michael Stützer Hansen og Michael Denner. Nedslagspunkter: - “Mettallica” er sidste band på opsamlingspladen “Metal Massacre”. Det ekstra “t” er en stavefejl, og rettes til “Metallica” i de senere oplag. - Metallicas forbilleder i Motörhead udgiver det album, bandet arbejdede på under Lars Ulrichs besøg i deres øvelokale året forinden: “Iron Fist”. - Engelske Discharge udgiver det hidsige hardcore-album, “Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing”, der inspirerer de fire unge skole-elever og bandkammerater i LA-bandet Slayer. - Mercyful Fate tager til det metal-begejstrede Holland og indspiller deres debut-EP “Mercyful Fate”. Bandmedlemmet Michael Denner tager os med på turen, og Steffen Jungersen erindrer, da EP'en ramte ham lige i smasken. - Venom udsender det diabolske og hæsblæsende album, “Black Metal”, der afføder navnet på den mørkeste, metalliske subgenre. - Accept-nummeret “Fast as a Shark” sætter nye standarder for speedet metal, og tænder ild i brødrene Stützer i bandet Devils Symphony. - Tank-sangen “Heavy Artillery” giver ideen til et nyt bandnavn hos brødrene Stützer i Tåstrup. - Sangeren Paul Christensen fra Vejle og guitaristen Kenneth Hansen fra Horsens er begge til Thin Lizzy-koncert i Århus i januar, og finder sammen i bandet Pretty Maids senere på året. - De gamle Deep Purple-medlemmer er fortsat aktive rundt omkring - i Gary Moores band, Whitesnake, Rainbow og Gillan. - De gamle venner i Uriah Heep er ude med en ny sanger, og hyrer den fyrede Ozzy-rytmegruppe, Lee Kerslake og Bob Daisley. - Den helt store tragedie finder sted om morgenen den 19. marts 1982 i Florida, da guitarist Randy Rhoads omkommer i et flystyrt undervejs på turneen med Ozzy. - Ozzy udgiver et dobbelt livealbum, udelukkende med Black Sabbath-sange, “Speak of the Devil”, den 22. november 1982. Black Sabbaths livealbum med den nu afgående Dio, “Live Evil”, følger en måneds tid efter. - Led Zeppelin udsender det niende og sidste studiealbum “Coda”, to år efter bandets opløsning. - Amerikansk hard rock og gang i den: KISS hylder den højtlydende rock'n'roll i “I Love it Loud”; Twisted Sister debuterer med dedikeret rock'n'roll-attitude; Aerosmith rocker videre uden bandets vanlige guitarduo; og Van Halens leger løs på deres femte album, “Diver Down”. - Metalkrigerne i Manowar debuterer med deres power metalliske slagsange på “Battle Hymns”. - Lars Ulrich og James Hetfield har rekrutteret et par nye medlemmer til Metallica, Cliff Burton og Dave Mustaine, og skaber stor opmærksomhed med demoen “No Life ‘Til Leather”. - Iron Maiden udgiver deres første album med Bruce Dickinson, ”The Number of the Beast”, der går rent ind hos metalfolket. Men var det så bedre end forgængeren “Killers”? Jungersen og Stützer går i dybden og måler de to album på decimaler. - Judas Priest er tilbage i topform på "Screaming for Vengeance". Jungersen og Stützer er igen i zen. - Vi afrunder det tungt rockende 1982 med The Scorpions' fremragende album “Blackout”, der også hyldes af Jungersen og Stützer, som ikke mindst stiller skarpt på guitarerne, inden røgen lægger sig. Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center had the government all up in your business in 1985, and thankfully three REAL free speech warriors - Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, Frank Zappa and the unlikeliest of heroes, our man John Denver told Congress TO THEIR FACES to back off. Tipper's crusade against arbitrarily-deemed "filth" yielded ATTT a project. Dee Snider joined Eddie Trunk to announce Twisted Sister's return for their 50th anniversary in 2026. After turning 70 and reflecting on the band's legacy, Dee decided it was time for one more run despite previously vowing never to reunite. He discusses the lineup changes, including Joe Franco replacing the late A.J. Pero on drums and Russ Pzutto taking over bass duties due to 'irreconcilable differences' with Mark Mendoza. Dee candidly shares his concerns about maintaining the high-energy performance style that defined Twisted Sister while explaining they'll focus on festival appearances rather than grueling tours. The New Orleans rock band Zebra has always existed out of time. Despite having one of the fastest selling debuts in Atlantic Records' history, Zebra never really fit in with the glammed up ‘80s metal bands they were being lumped in with on the pages and airwaves of Hit Parader and MTV. But that apparent inability to fit in may be exactly what endeared them to hordes of avid listeners who would wear out their bare bones cassette of ZEBRA and eventually go to Kmart and stealthily rip open a vinyl copy of the record to steal the lyric sheet so he could figure out what Randy Jackson was singing. Okay. We may be talking about Scott here. R.E.M. put out a multitude of hits in college, modern, and alternative rock genres in the 80's and 90's.  By the time that Around the Sun, the group's 13th studio album was released, the band was experiencing changes in personnel and struggles with focus.  Drummer Bill Berry retired in 1997 and was replaced by Bill Reiflin.  While Reiflin would be the regular percussionist for the band until their dissolution in 2011, he would not be considered a member of the band like Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass, keyboards), or Michael Stipe (vocals).  From a commercial standpoint the album was a success, going to number 13 on the Billboard 200 in the US, and topping the album chart in the UK.  However, critical reviews were more negative, and the band members would agree over time with Stipe and Mills stating that the album lacked focus.  Peter Buck was more critical, stating that the album shows that the band was bored with the material.  Many consider this the worst R.E.M. studio album the group produced. However, with the benefit of hindsight we think this album is due for a second look.  The songs are more adult-oriented than the bands hits from prior decades, yet maintain the distinctive R.E.M. sound.  There is a cleaner production on this album and clearer lyrics.Rob brings us a great debut folk rock album in this week's podcast.Leaving New YorkThe lead off track was also the lead single from the album.  It reached number 5 on the UK singles chart, making it the eleventh and last top-10 REM single in that country.  However, it was not heavily promoted and failed to crack the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the first US single from an REM studio album not to chart since 1985.  It has a somber tone.WanderlustThis was the fourth and final single from the album, and utilizes a complex time signature of 4/4 time in the verses and 7/4 in the chorus.  The title references the desire to travel, and not remain in one place for very long.  "I got my signals crossed.  It's overwhelming me because I'm all alone and I cant get back - get back with my wanderlust."AftermathThe second single from the album portrays a woman living in a daze after a breakup.  Overwhelmed by ruminations, she overfeeds the cat and underwaters the plants.  It went to number 15 on the US alternative rock chart and number 41 on the UK singles chart.  around the sunThe album contains a title track - a rarity on REM albums.  It begins with a soft acoustic guitar leading into pensive lyrics.  "Hold on world, 'cause you don't know what's coming.  Hold on world, 'cause I'm not jumping off.  Hold on to this boy a little longer, take another trip around the sun." STAFF PICKS:1985 by Bowling for SoupBruce starts the staff picks with a song about a middle-aged woman thinking about how things have changed since her glory days in 1985.  It is a cover song originally done by pop punk band SR-71, but made famous by the Bowling for Soup version.  It went to number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 5 on the Adult Top 40.  Float On by Modest MouseLynch brings us a track that songwriter and band founder Isaac Brock says was consciously written to feel more positive than some of his previous work.  The lyrics are stoic - not getting caught up in the bad things, because good things are around the corner.  "Alright, already, we'll all float on."I Go Back by Kenny ChesneyWayne's flips the script on us by bringing a country song into the mix, but with lyrics that talk about listening to rock songs in the past.  With references to the Steve Miller Band, Billy Joel, Sunday church, Sunday lunch, and the death of a High School friend, Chesney recounts days gone by. COMEDY TRACK:Goofy Goober Rock by SpongeBob SquarePants"The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" was released around this time, and included this parody of a Twisted Sister song.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?NXTGen”NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.
