Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/483 Presented By:  Chota Outdoor Gear, Angler's Coffee, Bearvault, Stonefly Nets Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In today's episode, we get up close and personal with the minds behind Echo Fly Fishing: Tim Rajeff, Jarrod Black, and Jamie Hixson. We hear the story of how Echo was founded and discover how they crafted some of the world's toughest, most durable rods. Plus, find out why Tim chose to pass the Echo torch to Jarrod and Jamie instead of selling out to the highest bidder. Join us for this inspiring episode that celebrates not only the art of fly fishing but also the lasting friendships it creates. Echo Fly Fishing Show Notes 03:21 - Echo Fly Fishing was established in 2001 by Tim Rajeff alongside Jarod and Katherine. Jamie Hixson joined the Echo team later in 2005, but his friendship with Jarrod dates back even before that. 04:40 - We hear the story behind Tim's decision to stick with Jarrod and Jamie instead of selling out to the highest bidder. Tim remains an integral part of Echo Fly Fishing, dedicating his expertise to what he does best – rod design. 07:30 - Jarrod and Tim's partnership traces back to their 15-year stint at G. Loomis Fishing Rods before they founded Rajeff Sports to distribute Airflo Fly Lines. Their collaboration with Airflo lasted for 20 years until they decided to part ways in August 2020. Meet the Echo Team  Jarrod Black  12:34 - Jarrod lived in an industrial town in Washington where there was a huge manmade lake. He and Jamie would use hotdog buns on a fly rod to target and catch carp. 16:50 Jarrod shares that the lack of affordable and quality fly gear influenced his decision to work at G. Loomis. When Echo was founded, it became a priority for him to make fly fishing more accessible to more people. Jamie Hixson 18:00 - Feeling burned out from his project manager role at a steel manufacturer and his 3D modeling job, Jamie reached out to Jarrod, who offered him a part-time position at Echo, which quickly turned into a full-time role. Now, with 18 years under his belt at Echo, Jamie's engineering background has proven invaluable as he and Tim work together to design exceptional Echo products. Tim Rajeff 23:20 - Despite growing up in a non-fly fishing town in California, Tim was just a short 5-minute walk away from the renowned Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club, where the foundations of modern fly fishing equipment were developed. Alongside his brother, who became a world casting champion, they had already been fishing when they stumbled upon the club and discovered a passion for the sport. Echo Fly Rods  26:23 - The Echo team shares valuable insights about their target customer and how they succeeded in creating rods at a lower price point. They take us behind the scenes of their rod conceptualization process. Additionally, we dive into the Shadow X Fly Rod, a product developed in collaboration with Pete Erickson for competition use. 43:40 - We get to the heart of the matter and ask the Echo team about the secret behind their durable rods. 52:00 - We also explore the evolution of Echo Fly Fishing's rods and the common reasons a rod would break. Tim emphasizes that most rods break at the tip. Because of this, his team set up a program where you can easily request a replacement tip online. 1:10:40 - During our conversation, the Echo team shares the inspiration and concept that gave birth to their iconic logo. 1:13:20 - Tim reveals the secret behind the Micro Practice Rod, which he shares was inspired by Joan and Lee Wulff's Fly-O. 1:17:00 - Of course, we seize the opportunity to learn casting tips from the master himself, Tim Rajeff. We dive into the double haul technique and explore valuable insights on how to improve our casting skills. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/483

Joining us are researchers with abstracts of interest chosen by the Balchem technical team. Our first guests are Dr. Billy Brown, Kansas State University, and Dr. Heather White, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Brown said results from feeding choline in utero showed no differences in the weight of the animal or ribeye areas, but they did have greater marbling, which is exciting. (4:19) Dr. Brown's poster title is: Effect of in utero choline exposure on Angus × Holstein carcass characteristicsOur second guest is Dr. Sergio Martinez Monteagudo from New Mexico State University. Dr. Martinez Monteagudo mentioned that while upcycling is not new and is used in other industries, it is more difficult to do in the food industry. Dr. Martinez Monteagudo turned lactose into something more used, sweeteners. Dr. Martinez Monteagudo's presentation title: Upcycling strategies of dairy byproducts and waste for value-added applications.Next up is Kelli Brost and Dr. Jim Drackley, both from the University of Illinois. Kelli found in her research that there is an effect on cow's milk protein and fat percentages when looking at summer versus non-summer seasons. When you look at winter versus non-winter or winter versus summer, she saw the exact opposite. (27:50) Kelli's Poster title is: Relationships between birth and calving season on first lactation performance of Holstein dairy cows in the Midwestern USANow, we're hearing from Jair Parales Giron from Michigan State University. Jair's research showed that fat has different effects from a low or high-starch diet. He also recommended that if you can't have a high-energy or low-starch diet, fatty-acid supplementation could work. Jair's presentation title is: Fatty acid supplementation interacts with starch content to alter production responses during the immediate postpartum in dairy cowsJoining us next are Tess Stahl and Dr. Pete Erickson from the University of New Hampshire. Tess studied the effects of a DCAD diet on Jersey cows. she found that minus 40 cals without and with nicotinic acid or niacin were equally feed efficient. And then there was a decrease with the minus 80. So she assumes that minus 80 is too harsh of a DCAD. (54:24)Tess' poster title is: Evaluation of colostrum quantity, quality, and bioactive compounds from Jersey cows fed two concentrations of dietary cation-anion difference with or without nicotinic acid and its effect on calf performanceLastly, we have Dr. Vinicius Machado from Texas Tech University. Dr. Vinicius didn't have any solid conclusions in his research but did notice that raising beef-on-dairy calves takes a different focus and approach than dairy cows or traditional beef cows. Throughout his portion, he hypothesizes what some options are. (1:38) Dr. Vinicius Machado's presentation title is: Management of beef-on-dairy calves: Should we raise them differently?Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the additional highlights from the 2023 ADSA Annual Meeting in future podcast episodes. If you want one of our new Real Science Exchange t-shirts, screenshot your rating, review, or subscription, and email a picture to anh.marketing@balchem.com. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/368 Presented By: Range Meal Bars, Stonefly Nets, Zoe Angling Group, Jackson Hole Fly Company Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Bret Bishop tells the story of how he got into the Team USA and who his mentor was early on that made his and the team's dreams come true. He shares how the team sets up their euro rigs while in competition and their mission to win gold in several competitions. He also takes us fishing in Europe, his home waters, and talks about his favorite gears, brands, and some tips on dry droppers. Listen to this episode to discover more tips and tricks from none other than Bret Bishop - 2006 Individual National Champion and current Captain of the Team USA.  Silver Creek Outfitter Show Notes with Bret Bishop 3:13 - Bret Bishop talks about how he got into fly fishing. His parents wanted him and his brother to be self-sufficient anglers. 3:51 - For years in the summertime, his family would travel around and spend three months living in a VW bus and going trout fishing and camping. 4:17 - They ended up living in Sun Valley, Idaho which is where Silver Creek is. His parents were into spring creeks, so everywhere they went they would go and fish the spring creek. 5:42 - Bret talks about how their father taught them how to be self-sufficient anglers. 6:24 - He also learned fly fishing and the actual casting through attending classes. 7:30 - He shares how different is Silver Creek now than it was in the '80s. 10:06 - He tells about how the Fly Fishing Team USA started. About 2003, his friend Pete Erickson, who we interviewed for episode 118, got into the team early. There was a lot of history before Bret joined the team. 11:36 - He got involved in the team when he was invited out to Bend, Oregon along with other guys to try out. He fished well enough that he made it to what they called the development team. 13:11 - In 2006, they had the first Fly Fishing National Champion in Boulder, Colorado. 15:20 - He shares why the team struggled during practice in Portugal in 2006 and why that made Portugal kind of a tough introduction to the world of European fly fishing. 16:37 - He talks about what makes fishing in Europe different. 19:26 - He shares the team's quest to win gold in Italy. He also mentions one person who has been the backbone of the team in terms of financial support and making their dreams come true. 21:50 - He clarifies the difference among the Masters Team, Senior Team, and Youth Team. 22:31 - I ask what would it be like to have the Masters Team compete with the Senior Team. 24:36 - He emphasizes how important it is to work well together as a team and have great team chemistry and guide. 26:49 - Bret encourages people, especially the best anglers, to get a guide saing time trying to find the water they need to fish and learn some inside knowledge on techniques. 27:52 - I ask about the percentage of time that he uses certain techniques such as euro nymphing, dry fly, dry dropper, and streamers. 31:41 - Bret shares how euro nymphing started and became popular. 33:18 - He talks about how their current style of nymphing is different from what it was 10 years ago. 36:30 - He shares his setup and current favorite gears. His current choice of rod is the Echo Shadow X 10'6" 3wt rod which he says is really light and just the right balance for everything. 37:10 - When he's guiding, he uses a level line that's a little stiffer such as those from Cortland and Umpqua. He currently uses the Cortland White Mono Line (.009"/8 LB) which he says works really well for guiding. 41:27 - He shares more about their practice and setup for a competition. 44:50 - He mentions some of their great guides who helped them win competitions through their techniques and fly patterns. 46:52 - He explains his process of how he goes through switching flies with a euro setup. 50:41 - Bret talks about fishing in his home water that is Silver Creek. 52:32 - He explains the big difference between a tailwater and a spring creek. 56:40 - Bret shares the best months to fish in Silver Creek. 58:34 - He mentions the other rivers and streams that he frequents to fish. 1:05:20 - He provides some tips on using a dry dropper saying it's a matter of keeping your setup simple. 1:09:50 - He says the hardest thing to learn is how to cast a euro dry dropper and provides some tips for it. 1:13:52 - He mentions his favorite tools to use in fishing in his home waters. 1:17:33 - He encourages young anglers to be well-rounded and learn casting besides euro nymphing. 1:18:27 - He shares the most difficult type of fishing to teach. 1:19:48 - He mentions the upcoming events for Team USA as well as the women's team wherein Tess Weigand is also a part. We interviewed her in episode 364. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/368

In this episode, Teri has a conversation with Keri Roberts, a brand and content strategist, podcast consultant, and the host of the Inside Voice Podcast.Welcome, Keri!Teri sat down with Keri at Project Voice 2020 and recorded their conversation. The Inside Voice Podcast features people who are doing all kinds of incredible things throughout the voice industry. The podcast also happens to be main content that is produced by Voice Summit, the biggest voice conference that is put on annually.BackgroundShe started out as a dancer and actually has a degree in dance. She also worked in health and fitness for a long time and even owned a dance studio, but she realized that she wanted to do more on branding and content marketing strategy. She really loves the branding aspect of it.She heard about voice technology from Gary Vaynerchuk about 3 years ago and just fell in love with it. He talked about how we could connect with voice and Keri did some research on that and came across Voice Summit. She went to the first Voice Summit and loved it, so she reached out to Pete Erickson and asked how she could help with what they were doing, and Pete mentioned the Inside Voice podcast that they needed help with. They have so far done 100+ podcast episodes.Patterns in the Voice SpaceMost of the people involved in a lot of voice oriented projects are creatives like photographers, writers, dancers, and filmmakers. One of the major things she’s hearing about include the need to make voice inclusive with all types of male and female voices, and keeping data secure in the development of voice applications.Leveraging Voice to Build a BrandShe believes that voice should be an integral part of a business’ brand and content marketing strategy. She encourages businesses to first look at what their customers want and need before they can create voice applications.Sonic BrandingShe has a personal podcast and her own sonic brand for the podcast. She describes it as a sound (not just music) that people should be able to associate with a certain business or brand when they hear it.Voice Summit 2020It will be its third year and will be held from October 5th to 8th 2020 down in Washington D.C.The event outgrew it's previous location and they needed more space to hold the number of people who were attending. The new space in Washington has more room and access to major airports. There is a lot more voice related activities going on there and it's also where the new Amazon headquarters opened up.They are focusing on helping the voice technology community while also enabling them to connect with their potential clients.List of resources mentioned in this episodeThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseVoice Summit WebsiteKeri on LinkedinOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Teri has a two-way interview between himself and Pete Erickson of Modev, the company behind Voice Summit and the Inside Voice Podcast. Enjoy!Pete Erickson is the founder and CEO of Modev, and their very successful Voice Summit has so far been the largest gathering of voice technology enthusiasts in the world. Voice Summit 2019 will be taking place in Newark, New Jersey on July 22nd to 25th 2019.Pete has been interested in interviewing Teri for his podcast and Teri wanted to interview him for his podcast, so they decided to do a joint podcast to get each of each other’s ideas on what’s happening with voice technology today. New Elements in Voice Summit 2019: PeteThe Voice Summit 2018 was more focused on content and bringing voice technology enthusiasts together with as many voices as possible being heard. This year they want to do the same, but they are also adding in some key activations that were not there last year, like The Voice Awards (a full awards dinner where they will give awards across about 15 different categories. Amazon, Samsung and Microsoft will be giving special awards too). They will also add in the Sonic Brands Society, which is a new networking community specifically around audio branding, and it will launched at the Grammy Museum on the 23rd of July, 2019.They will add on a hackathon, S.T.E.A.M Day (for middle to high school kids), and more structured networking type of events. The Direction of Alexa in Canada: TeriTeri’s biggest passions are education, technology and healthcare.Three years ago he was not involved in the voice first space. He started hearing about voice assistants coming to Canada and got very interested. The more he looked into it; he realized it was something that was going to revolutionize everything that we do.He went into the web to look for resources that Canadians could use to learn about voice, but couldn’t find any, so he decided to create some type of resource. He first launched the Alexa in Canada Podcast. He started to learn about flash briefings and up until today sees them as one of the biggest opportunities in educating audiences. His flash briefing has been the number one flash briefing in Canada since its launch and is currently approaching its 500th consecutive episode.Being a physician, he launched the Voice First Health Podcast with the idea of educating people about what is going on at the intersection of healthcare and voice. He launched Briefcast.FM, the first network for flash briefings, where he vets flash briefings. The network solved the problem of flash briefing discoverability and gives people access to the best quality flash briefings today. He then created the Flash Briefing Formula, a free premium course on how to create a flash briefing.Teri at the Voice SummitHe’s going to give the overview to flash briefings and talk about the opportunities in that space while giving the current statistics on why it’s a great opportunity compared to podcasts. He will then give a tutorial on how to set up a flash briefing by recording a live flash briefing from the workshop, so people can see what goes into it and how it’s put up. That way people will come away from that with basic knowledge on how to set it up on their own flash briefing.Teri will also give several other talks.Voice in the Longevity Economy: TeriDifferent companies are jumping into the aging in place sector. Voice is going to have an incredible impact in this space.A voice assistant can act as a care aid for a senior living at home. It can provide medication reminders, reminders of appointments, check on how they are doing, and generally monitor their health.Teri believes we are heading towards a more decentralized healthcare system which will allow seniors to bring healthcare into their homes and consequently take pressure off of the healthcare system and overworked health workers.Voice Summit Speakers on Voice Technology Use Among Seniors: PeteThere will be a lot of brilliant speakers, organizations and healthcare industry strategists at the summit.Voice Technology Predictions: PeteHe predicts that in a year from now, the monetization models for developers are going to open up and bring a lot more independent developers into the voice space. It’s already happening and the ones who are doing it will be highlighted at the Voice Summit 2019.Voice Technology Predictions: TeriTeri is very excited about the developments related to healthcare and thinks that the recent HIPAA Compliance that was announced by Amazon is a game changer. That means that voice devices can be used as medical devices that can capture, provide and store personal health information. The whole idea of vocal biomarkers (voice as a vital sign) is incredible and Teri predicts that we will start seeing some amazing applications in the near future.List of resources mentioned in this episodeInside Voice PodcastFlash Briefing FormulaThe Voice Summit 2019Other Useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsReviews of top Alexa Skills in CanadaAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.caThe Voice Summit 2019use promo code TF270 for 15% off See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Teri welcomes Pete Erickson, founder and CEO of Modev.com, and creator of events and communities including Voicehacks.com, Security by Design, Code Writers Workshop, Machinery.io, DevOpsNirvana and DevelopingIoT. Pete and his team are putting on Voice Summit in July, one of the year’s largest voice tech conferences.Welcome Pete Erickson! How did you get your start in voice technology?Pete got into the technology space by way of community building. Flash-back to ten years ago: Pete had just exited his third start-up and was looking for his next opportunity. On seeing the iPhone and the App Store gain traction and noticing that there was no community around this amazing technology, he decided to start Modev, a meet-up community. Fast-forward to today: Modev, now with 40 people, does community-building at all levels and has been working with Amazon for the past seven years. Modev now has a close relationship with the Alexa team. Why is the community building important for technology?Modev operates on the very simple belief that human connection is vital in the era of digital transformation. As technology starts to speed up, it’s really critical for people to get together and engage and understand the new technology; otherwise, technology really can’t move forward. What is the level of interest that you’ve seen in voice versus other technologies?People are interested by new ways to interact with technology. With mobile, it was pretty much proven that if you had a good UX, your app was going to take off. Look at Instagram, for example. Well, now with voice the same pattern is becoming apparent. We launched Voice Summit on April 4th and, within four weeks, we had over 150 submissions. In the US alone, there are 50 million voice assistants inside peoples’ homes. People really want to get their hands on voice technology.Could you tell us more about Voice Summit? When we did our 10-city tour last year, one of the things we identified was that there was not a big-tent event that brought together the developers, the designers, product leaders and brands. We saw this opening and decided to launch the Summit. We brought that idea to the Amazon Alexa team and they agreed and we ended up with a diamond sponsorship underwritten by Amazon. This actually ended up being Amazon’s largest investment outside of CES (The International Consumer Electronics Show). The conference will be hosted in Newark, New Jersey, at the New Jersey Institute technology. We’ll have 11 tracks at the event; two of those eleven tracks will be actually taught completely by Amazon staff, so people can come to the event and get hands-on training from Amazon staff.Any additional words? There will be big-name brands at the event: Lego, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, etc. With more than 50 speakers, we’re going to have such a broad range of topics across many industries. This one is one for the books.List of resources mentioned in this episode:Voice Summituse promo code TalkVoiceToMe for 20% off registrationModevPete Erickson on TwitterTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.caThe Alexa Conference, presented by VoiceFirst.FMuse promo code ALEXAINCANADA for 20% off See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
