Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.The Milwaukee Film Festival doesn't stop after week one, so neither do we!We're into the second phase of the annual event, and in the extremely remote chance you thought Dori and Kpolly would run out of films to talk about, rest assured that the folks at Milwaukee Film have provided plenty to cover.Speaking of those folks, programming director Kerstin Larson is back! If you want to get technical about how we record these things, she actually never left … but still. It's great to have an insider like Kerstin helping us sort through the 96(!) features and oodles of short programs across five screens at the Oriental and Downer theaters. On this episode, the trio briefly hit on the unique environment of a film festival, the excitement around seeing these projects that aren't always what you expect, and how going to a theater will always (always!!!) kick the rear end of watching a movie at home.Milwaukee Film Festival picks: Week 2What Happened to Dorothy Bell? After uncovering disturbing revelations from her early childhood involving her late grandmother, Ozzie Gray sets out to investigate her past. Desperate for answers, she attempts to communicate with Dorothy's spirit but unwittingly awakens something malevolent.Midnight ShortsWho doesn't love a little mayhem? Your inner monster will thank you for this night of kooky comedies, hair-raising horror and cRuNCHy sqUISHYyy battles between flesh and … is that Cate Blanchett?! It's a late-night party so unhinged, you can only see it after midnight. OK, it starts at 10 p.m. … but maybe it'll go until midnight?BalomaniaThe culture and work of Brazilian baloeiros — secret groups of men who craft and launch intricate hot-air balloon art — deserve a place on the big screen. This epic portrayal captures the free-spirited artistry and subculture, showcasing a raw, authentic exploration of Brazilian masculinity.HarvestOver seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears. Tsangari's follow up to 2015's Chevalier, this tragicomic take on a Western follows townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry Jones) and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent (Harry Melling), childhood friends who are about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity. The Milwaukee Show (One and Two)Each year, The Milwaukee Show is one of the hottest tickets of the festival — a rare chance to see work from our local best and brightest in the gloriously opulent setting of our beloved Oriental Theatre's Abele Cinema. This collection of stunning shorts allows you to watch locally, yet think globally.40 AcresIn a post-apocalyptic future where food is scarce, the last descendants of a Black family of farmers who settled in Canada after the American Civil War must protect their homestead from an organized militia hell-bent on taking their land. Structured like a typical apocalypse film, 40 Acres subverts expectations in ways that will leave you breathless. Magic FarmA film crew working for an edgy media company travels to Argentina to profile a local musician, but their ineptitude leads them into the wrong country. As the crew collaborates with locals to fabricate a trend, unexpected connections blossom while a pervasive health crisis looms unacknowledged in the background.
We don't exactly keep rock-solid statistics for this sort of thing, but to the best of our recollection, this episode of Cinebuds sets a new land-speed record for sheer number of movies mentioned in a single episode. Given the topic, that shouldn't come as a surprise. In addition to being a Cinebud, Dori Zori is 88Nine's morning host and — this next one is an unofficial title — queen of the station's International Women's Day programming. She got that particular tradition started a decade ago, putting her passion for female, femme and female-identifying artists on the air for all to hear.So you know we weren't going to let March pass by without a Cinebuds episode devoted to impactful women in the movie industry. Dori and Kpolly name drop more than 30 films during their chat, in addition to giving general co-signs to the work of Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. They also point out a few individuals who may not be quite as well-known to movie lovers, like film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who has worked alongside director Martin Scorsese for more than five decades. We did our best to collect all the movies they mentioned and sort them in the lists below. Take a look at your options and host your own screening this March and all year round.Women's History Month moviesStarring roles9 to 5, starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane FondaCoffy, starring Pam Grier (showing at the Oriental Theatre from March 20-22)Stormy Weather, starring Lena HorneGaslight, starring Ingrid BergmanA League of Their Own, starring Geena DavisPrivate Benjamin, starring Goldie HawnStar Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, starring Carrie FisherDirector's cutThe Future, directed by Miranda JulyKajillionaire, directed by Miranda JulyMe and You and Everyone We Know, directed by (and starring) Miranda JulyCertain Women, directed by Kelly ReichardtFirst Cow, directed by Kelly ReichardtYou Were Never Really Here, directed by Lynne RamsayLemon, directed by Janicza BravoZola, directed by Janicza BravoThe Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn BigelowThe Fire Inside, directed by Rachel MorrisonBehind the scenesThe Departed, edited by Thelma Schoonmaker (showing at the Oriental Theatre on March 25)Black Panther, cinematography by Rachel MorrisonFruitvale Station, cinematography by Rachel MorrisonDope, cinematography by Rachel Morrison

One of the prominent talking points around recent Best Picture nominee The Brutalist is the level of commitment it asks of its audience. Tipping the scales at a hefty 214 minutes, the film is thoughtful enough to include an intermission as it tells a tale about the complexity of creation, collaboration and capitalism. With more than three and a half hours of movie to talk about, our hosts have ample opportunity to share thoughts about the latest from director Brady Corbet — well, one of them does anyway. An unfortunate household appliance situation interrupted Kpolly's attempt to see The Brutalist, leaving Dori as our lone Cinebud with opinions to offer.Fortunately, this just so happens to be a “very special guest” episode featuring not one but TWO podcast debutants: Milwaukee Film's Kelsey Parks and Kevin Rice!We asked the organization's technical manager and technology director to join us because this film is a bit of a technological marvel because of its … film. With an assist from IMDb, here's a quick explainer:The film was shot entirely in VistaVision, a widescreen format that runs 35mm film horizontally through the camera to create eight perforation film frames, twice the size and resolution of standard four perforation 35mm. The film was then released in theaters with 70mm film prints. … This is the first American film in 61 years to be entirely shot in the format, the last being My Six Loves (1963). Director Brady Corbet explained: "It just seemed like the best way to access that period (1950s) was to shoot on something that was engineered in that same decade."It's one thing to read about the unique filming approach and another to actually show it to audiences. Kelsey and Kevin have the insiders' perspectives on what it took to get The Brutalist on the big screen at the Oriental Theatre, which is one of a shrinking number of venues across the country equipped to project 70mm film. Then there's the workout the Oriental Theatre's projectionists get with every screening. Each reel weighs roughly 40 pounds, and they need to be changed every 40 minutes without audiences noticing the transitions. It's a really interesting look behind the curtain (or into the projection booth) that we're proud to provide in this episode.
Traditions make the holiday season what it is. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. A treasured decoration hanging in a place of honor on the tree. The annual viewing of Stanley Kubrick's psycho-sexual thriller Eyes Wide Shut.Maybe you don't venture outside the lines quite that much, but Milwaukee Film's "Season's Screenings" holiday series sure does. In honor of the adventurous range of selections being shown at the Oriental Theatre through Jan. 1, Dori and Kpolly have a spirited conversation about what we watch around this time of year, roast a few and unwrap the ones they might not be quite as familiar with (perhaps Tangerine or Tokyo Godfathers). To see the full lineup of films, along with links to purchase tickets, go to our story on the Radio Milwaukee website.
Forget the chicken and the egg. Nevermind the sound of one hand clapping. Let's answer something truly difficult:What's your favorite Keanu Reeves movies? That's what Dori and Kpolly bravely take on in this episode of Cinebuds, which takes inspiration from the Keanuthon currently underway at the Oriental Theatre. As you follow along with our duo's typically high-minded conversation, ponder your own preference when it comes to the filmography of Keanu Reeves. Do you go for the clueless comedic version in the Bill & Ted series? The “in over his head” action star of Point Break and The Matrix? The “man of few words but many guns” from the John Wick series?Dori and Kpolly run through all the Keanus in this episode and hopefully discuss why Milwaukee Film didn't include his best role — Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 — in the Keanuthon that runs through the end of the month.

A medical historian tells us about how women's health has been shaped by generations of predominantly male practitioners. Then, we talk to the author of a bill that would protect the Mississippi River basin. Then, we we learn about the Oriental Theatre’s restored vintage film organ and the history of movie music.
The nearly century-old pipe organ brings back the original magic of 1920s movie palaces.

Brian Ritchie, bassist for the folk punk band the Violent Femmes, joins host Kenneth Womack on this episode to chat about his first Beatles records and the 40th anniversary of the Femmes' debut album. Ritchie co-founded the Violent Femmes with percussionist Victor DeLorenzo in 1981, and the duo were later joined by singer-songwriter Gordon Gano. Ritchie came up with band's distinctive name on a whim, employing it during their early days playing in Milwaukee's coffee houses. In August 1981, the Violent Femmes were discovered performing on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre by James Honeyman-Scott, the guitarist for the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde invited the Femmes to play an acoustic set prior to the Pretenders' show that night. In 1983, the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut album, which emerged as a key soundtrack for the burgeoning alternative and college-oriented rock movements. The inaugural LP featured many of the band's best-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” The album became the Femmes' most successful LP, eventually earning platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the years, the Femmes have recorded 10 studio albums, including Hallowed Ground (1984), The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), and Why Do Birds Sing? (1991). The group is widely considered to be a key influence on the 1980s and 1990s alternative rock scene. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

We are live at the Oriental Theatre! KPolly and Dori Zori's husband, Milan, team up for a special 50th anniversary screening of ENTER THE DRAGON starring Bruce Lee. Afterwards, the audience asked the Cinebuds a few questions.
This week, Dori Zori talks one-on-one with Michael Neelsen about his documentary "Beyond Human Nature.'' The true-crime story, which will air at this year's Milwaukee Film Festival, focuses on a death that happened in Green Bay back in 1992. They talk about the filmmaking process, as well as what inspired the Wisconsin director growing up.Showtimes: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Times Cinema; and 9:15 p.m. Monday, May 2, at the Oriental Theatre.
This week, Dori and KPolly headed to the Oriental Theatre to see a new documentary called "All The Beauty And The Bloodshed." The film takes us on a journey through New York in the 70's as well as the present, where Nan Goldin goes up against the Sackler family who was greatly responsible for the opioid epidemic. We also introduce a new segment in the episode!
A Milwaukee institution is celebrating a big milestone: Landmark Lanes turns 95. Landmark was originally a part of the Oriental Theatre complex, eventually becoming the entertainment center generations of Milwaukeeans have come to know. We explore its history and why people continue to visit the "Underground City."
We look at the discussion around renaming Milwaukee's historic Oriental Theatre. Then, learn about the life and death of Milwaukeean Mildred Fish-Harnack. We explore the book Crying in the Bathroom. Plus, look at the documentary Butterfly in the Sky which tells the story of the TV series Reading Rainbow.

The Milwaukee Film Festival enters its second decade of existence on Oct. 17. MBJ’s Margaret Naczek sat down with Karina Henderson, Milwaukee Film’s new marketing director to talk about some of the biggest changes for this year’s festival. Every year the festival seems to add more and more films, but a big change this year was to the festival venues, particularly the number of theaters and renovations to the Oriental Theatre on Milwaukee’s East Side. Later, Margaret talks with fellow MBJ reporter Sari Lesk about all the new attractions coming to Brookfield Square. They talked about what new venues like Whirlyball and Marcus Theatres’ new Movie Tavern bring to the mall, as well as the growing trend towards this idea of “eatertainment” where businesses combine food and beverage options with activities. Half a century after his death in a North Vietnamese prison camp following horrific injuries, unimaginable hardship, and unspeakable torture, United States Air Force Captain Lance P. Sijan’s name and heroics are still as remarkable and important as they were in 1968. For those who knew the Milwaukee native and Medal of Honor recipient during his brief-but-brilliant life, the love and legacy he left behind are just as special as his bravery in battle. Thanks to the tireless efforts of his little sister, Lance's life, his accomplishments, his courage, his resilience, and his message all live on to inform and inspire future generations—both in Milwaukee and throughout the world. Janine Sijan Rozina has been present at many dedication ceremonies and has been the honorary recipient of many of her sibling’s awards and accolades through the years. Around 10 years ago, she decided to "become very proactive in maintaining his legacy." Since then, Sijan Rozina has been working on a documentary about Lance. Sijan has been in production for six years. On Tuesday, the documentary about the local hero will have its world premiere at Oriental Theatre, as part of the Milwaukee Film Festival. Before the October 23 debut (and subsequent screenings at Avalon Theater on October 28 and Oriental Theatre on October 30), Sijan Rozina got together with host Tyler Maas to talk about her big brother, expand on things Maas touched upon in his July 4 profile about Lance, and discuss the process of making Sijan. Visit LanceSijan.com for more information on Sijan and to learn more about Capt. Lance P. Sijan.

From Thursday, October 18 through Thursday, November 1, the 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival will transform this old black-and-white town into a glowing Technicolor dream. (Not that there's anything wrong with black and white films, of course.) More than 300 films will light up the screens of the Oriental Theatre, Avalon Theater, Times Cinema, Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, and the new Jan Serr Studio Cinema (located inside the Kenilworth Building). Dozens of filmmakers and special guests will hobnob with the hobnobbers. Oodles of events will keep the city in a tizzy. We'll host a horror-movie-themed axe-throwing party at AXE MKE. You're welcome. In preparation for the fest, host Matt Wild and fellow film buffs Maggie Iken and Mack Bates sat down to talk all things MFF2018. Can't-miss films, can't-miss events, and Matt's long-lost student film, Super Hot Dog Man (featuring Bates as God), were all discussed. As always, this episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Piles ("Blue Glue") and Amanda Huff ("Gravetalking").

Gary and Frank catch up and discuss a couple of recent theatrical viewings. First off, we get an inside look at Frank's eastern European trip which took him away from Booth One for a couple of episodes. He tells of his experiences in Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Vienna and Budapest, how the architecture and city centers have changed, and why Prague is one of the most stunning cities he's ever visited. He is grateful to friend of the show and two-time guest, Stuart Dybek, for his great suggestions for things to do in Prague. He also let us know that Warsaw is booming and beautiful. While on the continent, Frank sampled a Porn Star Martini, ate at iconic local restaurants, and ogled the naked people on building facades in Prague. Other than Vienna, the entire trip was a bargain and the direct flights on LOT between both Warsaw and Budapest & Chicago made travel a breeze. A trip that Frank highly recommends. The boys visited the Steppenwolf Theatre to view their new main stage show The Roommate, featuring knock-out performances from Ora Jones and Sandra Marquez, both Steppenwolf ensemble members. Written by the up and coming and very talented playwright Jen Silverman and directed by Phylicia Rashad, The Roommate is a comedy/drama centered around two women who become housemates somewhere in Iowa. Gary and Frank share their thoughts and opinions on the play, and suggest that it is perfect summer fare for those seeking a great night out at the theater. The Roommate runs through August 5. We discuss writer-performer Amanda Duarte's Guide to Theater Etiquette. Standing, talking, eating, drinking, clapping and cell phones are among the topics she shares her opinions on in this New York Time Out article. Enjoy. Next up is our take on The Cher Show, which recently had its pre-Broadway tryout here in Chicago at the Oriental Theatre. Containing 35 hit songs and a flurry of thrilling Bob Mackie gowns, this biographical musical gives us three versions of Cher - Babe, Lady and Star - at different points in her life and career. Played by three actresses - Micaela Diamond (in her professional debut), Teal Wicks, and the always amazing Stephanie J. Block - the show is framed as a TV special being made about Cher's life. The three "Chers" interact with each other throughout, even having musical numbers as a trio, something Gary found to be an oddly disconcerting choice by the writers. Nevertheless, the opening night audience was very responsive and cheered wildly at many of the show's high points and at the curtain call. By the way, Jarrod Spector as Sonny is marvelous. Both Frank and Gary feel there is a bit of work to be done by the creative staff prior to the November 1 preview at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York. But they agree that they were highly entertained and that the show has great promise. Especially considering the box office success of the current Summer - The Donna Summer Musical now on Broadway. Kiss of Death: Gillian Lynne - Choreographer of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera The renowned British ballerina who turned choreographer created the sinuous dances in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats. Gillian Barbara Pyrke began dancing at an early age and by 15, was dancing at the Ballet Guild, whose artistic director gave her a new surname. She appeared in films, onstage and on television throughout the 1950s, and choreographed The Roar of the Greasepaint - the Smell of the Crowd in 1965 on Broadway. This past June, the New London Theater, where Cats opened in 1981, was renamed for Ms. Lynne. She was carried to the stage on a golden throne surrounded by dancers from the musical. Gillian Lynne was 92. Read the full NYT obit here.

From September 28 through October 12, the ninth annual fest will light up the screens of the Oriental Theatre, Downer Theatre, Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, Times Cinema, and Avalon Theater with one of its strongest lineups yet. Need help navigating that lineup? Of course you do. For this freewheeling MFF2017 preview, hosts Matt Wild and Tyler Maas are joined by OnMilwaukee film, TV, and culture critic Matt Mueller to discuss their personal festival picks, the state of Milwaukee cinema, the future of Milwaukee Film, and more. Mueller gives the group a taste of his panel discussion (with Dr. Susan Kerns) on September 30, Wild makes a case for the life-affirming Stop Making Sense dance party, and Tyler keeps bringing up Eddie Murphy's Norbit for some reason.

Heads up, Milwaukee: the 2017 Milwaukee Film Festival—which takes over the Landmark Oriental Theatre, Landmark Downer Theatre, Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, Times Cinema, and Avalon Theater September 28-October 12—is just over a month away. So who better to talk to in the weeks leading up to the fest than Milwaukee Film's artistic and executive director, Jonathan Jackson? Host Matt Wild met up with Jackson at the not-so-bustling Shops of Grand Avenue food court to chat about the ninth installment of the festival, Milwaukee Film's multi-pronged mission statement, and, oh yeah, the organization's upcoming takeover of the Oriental Theatre. What will change? What will stay the same? Will they be showing stuff like Avengers 12 and Thor 7? (Answer: no.) Jackson and Wild also discuss Milwaukee's nascent film industry, UWM, weird Stan Brakhage movies, and the time they shared a bed together in Cleveland.
