The last time Wisconsin-born writer/director Nathan Deming stopped by for a podcast visit, he was coming off a big win that went beyond any single project. Now he's back to focus a little more intently on one of his own creations — and talk a bit about that previous victory.Deming and his Action! Wisconsin cohorts had plenty to smile about when he joined us in November of 2025, a few months after Wisconsin legislators passed and Governor Tony Evers signed into law the creation of production incentives and a state film office. These days, Deming's joy comes from promoting his gripping new movie, Winter Hymns, which takes an ambitiously creative approach to examining the world of palliative (or end-of-life) care.Shot in a single room at a hospital on a snowy Wisconsin day, the film captures a series of conversation-based “episodes” between a doctor (played by the wonderful Colleen Madden of the American Players Theatre in Spring Green) and her patients. A few days before a special screening and Q&A at Milwaukee's Oriental Theatre, Deming talked with us about being inspired by his father's career as a hospice director, the importance of casting local talent and how the production choices resulted in an emotionally weighty film that paints an authentic picture of a difficult topic.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Doors.
Get ready to lean into the darkness! For this episode, we invited a special guest to help us celebrate the most wonderful (and miserable) time of the year: Bleak Week.Running from June 21-27 at the Oriental Theatre, Bleak Week is an international phenomenon featuring some of the greatest, saddest and most soul-crushing films from around the world. This year, the series delves into the theme of work, exploring how our jobs and labor can be a primary source of bleakness in our daily lives.Milwaukee Film programming director Kerstin Larson is back in the studio as we dive into the Bleak Week lineup, starting with a special Father's Day screening of Béla Tarr's The Turin Horse. We also discuss the high-stakes tension of Sorcerer, the psychological paranoia of the anime classic Perfect Blue and the minimum-wage struggles depicted in American Job, which includes a live Q&A with local lead actor Randy Russell.Whether it's the gritty detective work of Se7en or the poignant social commentary of Black Girl, there's a flavor of misery for every cinephile to enjoy together in the beautiful, air-conditioned gloom of the theater. After all, misery loves company.####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Doors.
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I am joined by Dr. Susan Kerns! This marks Susan's fourth appearance on the show, and it's always a treat. Susan is the Executive Director for Milwaukee Film and a friend of the show. On this episode, we are knocking something off of both of our shame lists--William Friedkin's Sorcerer! This episode is being done just in time for the upcoming screening at the Oriental Theatre on June 22nd. This screening is part of their Bleak Week programming, which was originally started by the American Cinematheque.Find more info on MKE Film at www.mkefilm.orgBe sure to check out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/shamelistpictureshowEdited by: Austin ProctorProduced by: Michael ViersExecutive Producer: Austin ProctorTheme Music by: Austin ProctorOpening Narration by: Nick RichardsCredits Music by: Ten-SpeedLogo Design by: Amanda Viers

A public service announcement from your friends at Cinebuds: “Animated movies” and “Anime” are NOT the same thing. It's a good time to point this out because throughout this month, Milwaukee Film will turn its lens on the magic of both categories as part of its “Ani-May” movie series.Yes, the more general moviegoing public will notice familiar titles like The Iron Giant, Ferngully and Smashmouth-adjacent delight-turned-sequel-factory Shrek (and Shrek 2). That does NOT mean families with young children should descend on the Oriental Theatre willy-nilly for any selection in the series.A prime case in point is the film that earns our focus in this episode, the punctuation-laden Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc. Leave the kiddies at home for this high-octane, high-violence tale that might just lure you in via a slow-burn 40 minutes that seem to be more about teenage dating than the title would suggest. Then … it earns that title. But while Dori and Kpolly spend time exploring the mythology of devils and hunters, compare Chainsaw Man to Blade and wonder whether they're getting too old for this s***, there's more than chainsaws in this episode! Our duo also touch on the full lineup for “Ani-May” — from Shrek's swampy nostalgia to the Fantasia-indebted Allegro Non Troppo.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Doors.
Step inside the Goblin King's maze with this special live episode of Cinebuds! Recorded at the historic Oriental Theatre during the 2026 Milwaukee Film Festival, this episode celebrates the 40th anniversary (and 4K restoration) of the fantasy classic, Labyrinth. For this very special occasion, Dori and Kpolly enlisted some help from Steve Horton, Eisner-winning author of the graphic novel Bowie: Stardust, Ray Guns, and Moonage Daydreams. He shares a few fascinating insider stories about Labyrinth from his research, including how Bowie would use a puppet off-camera to charm baby Toby into staying calm during filming. The trio also dive into: Why Bowie was the perfect Jareth (and which other '80s icons almost got the part). A tribute to Jim Henson's timeless practical effects and the lovable "gentle giant," Ludo. Hilarious behind-the-scenes secrets, from the infamous "codpiece" to Jennifer Connelly's real reaction to the Bog of Eternal Stench. And it wouldn't be a live event without getting the audience involved, including a few brave souls who offer their questions and "hot takes."#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
With Milwaukee Film getting ready to celebrate 414 Day by screening the Song Sung Blue documentary at the Oriental Theatre, we're taking a timely jump back to our conversation with a key player in the 2008 film about local musical couple Mike and Claire Sardina. Enjoy.#####After coming down from our Hugh Jackman interaction at the Song Sung Blue premiere at the close of 2025, we pulled back the curtain on the Milwaukee connections that inspired the recently released biopic. For that, we called in local filmmaker Jimmy Sammarco, who was instrumental (pun very intended) in the original Song Sung Blue documentary that brought the story of musical couple Mike and Claire Sardina — aka Lightning & Thunder — into the spotlight back in 2008. In his role as director of photography, he saw the ins and outs of the whole production, including a bombshell cease-and-desist order from Sony Music and an unlikely savior from one of the godfathers of grunge.
We use the phrase “action star” to describe the massive talent at the center of this episode, but Michelle Yeoh has demonstrated over the course of her remarkable career that she's so much more than that.In fact, her career as a performer didn't start with scripts or stunts. She was more focused on pirouettes and pliés as a classically trained ballet dancer, getting all the way to London's Royal Academy of Dance before a spinal injury set her on a path to the big screen (but not before becoming a literal beauty queen).Dori and Kpolly get into Yeoh's off-screen activities — even touching on her humanitarian work and activism — as they give her the star treatment for this episode. It's a well-deserved spotlight considering everything Yeoh has accomplished across her 40-year career, from performing her own stunts despite zero marital-arts training to winning Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once at the 2023 Academy Awards. That's just one of the Yeoh-centric movies you can check out at the Oriental Theatre throughout March as Milwaukee Film presents its irresistibly titled “Just Say Yeoh” series. You'll hear our dynamic duo discuss all four movies in the series, a handful of her other memorable roles and the other releases you should catch at the Oriental this week.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
'Christmas at the Oriental' is a special holiday music show featuring music recorded at Milwaukee's Oriental Theatre on their historic 1925 Wurlitzer organ.
There are so many “firsts” on this episode, we're honestly not sure what to do with ourselves.Let's start by telling you (in case you skipped the headline) that we're reviewing Song Sung Blue, the based-on-a-true-story of real-life Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, also known as Lightning & Thunder. Their Neil Diamond tribute act — with occasional departures into ABBA, Patsy Cline and others — played stages around the area for nearly 20 years, eventually catching the attention of writer/director Craig Brewer.Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson came on board his project to play the lead roles, with Jackman in particular embracing it in a huge way. That brings us to our first “first,” which saw the Oriental Theatre host a premiere for Song Sung Blue (reportedly at Jackman's request) and give us a chance to attend our very first Hollywood-ish event. In addition to Dori, Radio Milwaukee social media strategist Zoey Knox elbowed her way to the edge of the red carpet, which was appropriately blue for the occasion. So of course we invited Zoey for her first Cinebuds appearance to share her thoughts on the movie, as well as what it was like for her and Dori to interview (sort of) the one and only Hugh Jackman!!!You'll hear that admittedly brief but still wonderful chat in the full episode, which also includes our hosts' reaction to this very Milwaukee tale. Some quick highlights: Hudson really nails her portrayal of Claire Sardina, she and Jackman clearly have legit singing chops, and the general uplifting-ness of the story make this a perfect release for the holiday season.Get all of the details in this episode, and make sure you check in with us after the holiday break for another perspective on Song Sung Blue from filmmaker Jimmy Sammarco, whose 2008 documentary of the same name was instrumental to the biopic hitting theaters this Christmas.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

Special episodes happen on the regular around here, but this one is something extra special: our live recording right after a screening of the 1988 holiday classic, Scrooged! We gathered an amazing audience at the Oriental Theatre to watch the movie and have a chat about Bill Murray's performance as Frank Cross, the youngest network president in television history who's got a long night ahead of him.Does this four-decades-old film still hit? We tackled that question, along with some fun facts about Murray's acting hiatus after Ghostbusters and his on-set conflicts with director Richard Donner. You'll also hear us dive into why this is a "very pro-therapy movie" and debate who should play the Frank Cross role if the movie were cast today. Our audience was eager to share their opinions as well and compete in Bill Murray trivia for truly impressive prizes. including an IBC towel and an autographed (possibly broken) VHS player! Grab some popcorn and enjoy this fun, chaotic celebration of an '80s holiday favorite.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

This week, our cinematic buddies tackle Guillermo del Toro's latest masterpiece: the new Frankenstein film currently streaming on Netflix. It's a movie he wanted to make since he was 8 years old, and we explore how this master of dark genre handled the classic Mary Shelley story.Dori and Kpolly discuss the film's unexpected body-horror elements and how it manages to balance the unsettling effects with a powerful focus on the humanity of the creature. You'll also learn about the creature's casting evolution — from initial plans for Doug Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch to the final role played by Jacob Elordi — and how del Toro's choices shaped his take on the original story.Stick around until the end for our hosts' latest recommendations, including Being Eddie, the new documentary about comedy legend Eddie Murphy. And don't forget to join Cinebuds at the Oriental Theatre at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 11, for a screening of the holiday classic Scrooged followed by a LIVE taping of the podcast!#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
The divide between people who review things for a living and regular folk has existed since before Robert Green called Shakespeare “an upstart crow” back in 1592. The years since have brought us Mozart (“too many notes”), Psycho (“falls quite flat”) and Taylor Swift's discography, post-folklore.It sounds like we can add Wicked: For Good to the list. The second half of the movie based on the Broadway production based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire has put critics on one side of the yellow brick road and fans on the other. Fortunately, we have just the duo to close that gap.Dori and Kpolly step into this episode relatively fresh from seeing the final chapter of the green-and-pink saga, and play out the internal struggle of critic vs. fan for your listening enjoyment. Despite imbibing Wicked: For Good with a side of critical pans and outright distaste, our duo's take is a horse of a different color. Listen to their full report, and make sure you stick around until the end for more recommendations and special details about the Cinebuds Live event coming up Dec. 11. Actually, we'll just give you that second part now: If you haven't gotten your ticket for the very exciting screening of Scrooged and live taping of the podcast at the Oriental Theatre, go to the Milwaukee Film website and enter the creative code “SCROOGED” at checkout for $3 off.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
Milwaukee Film's annual “Season's Screenings” holiday movie series just got underway this week, and if you're listening to this episode on its release date, that means you've only missed one of the 22 selections that will run at the Oriental Theatre between now and Jan. 1 (if you really love The Holiday, you can always fork over $3.99 to stream it). With our resident Milwaukee Film-ite Kpolly, it seemed silly not to use this opportunity to dig into the topic of holiday movies. It won't surprise you to learn that both of our hosts find this part of the calendar cinematically delightful. It's kind of hard to argue with them, considering how un-genre-specific these movies are. Traditionalist? You've got White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life. Romantic? Bridget Jones' Diary and When Harry Met Sally. Holiday hater? Krampus and Christmas Evil. Prefer straight-ahead comedies? Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Scrooged.Speaking of the Bill Murray-starring take on A Christmas Carol, only one entry in this year's “Season's Screenings” has an interactive element, and it happens Dec. 11 with what we're calling “Scrooged with Cinebuds Live”! Because we believe in delivering on things promised in titles, everyone in attendance at the Oriental Theatre will enjoy a screening of the movie and a live taping of Cinebuds immediately following. So if you've ever fancied the idea of hearing your voice on the podcast, this is your big chance. We'll even sweeten the deal by knocking $3 off your ticket, since you're clearly a devoted Cinebuds fan if you've gotten this far down the page. Just enter the code “SCROOGED” when you check out on the Milwaukee Film website, and you'll see the discount applied.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
Being the hosts of a big-time podcast like this one gets you access to some pretty cool stuff. It also turns out that being a fan of a big-time podcast like this one can pay off from time to time — like getting the chance to see the most talked about movie in the country before anyone else!We like exaggerating now and then, but for One Battle After Another, our cinematic trio (yes, trio) got the privilege to be in the audience for an advance screening happening at only 13 locations nationwide. Milwaukee's own Oriental Theatre landed on that exclusive list, and Radio Milwaukee member Sara Frenn got the exclusive opportunity to watch the movie with Dori and Kpolly, then talk about it on this episode. What do they have to say about it? There are a lot of words in a 30-minute podcast, but some of the choice ones are “surprising,” “misleading” (in a good way) and “unexpected.”If you've only seen a trailer or ad for the film, you'd be forgiven for thinking One Battle After Another is an action-y thriller. While it has those elements, the laughs go well beyond mere comic relief and do more than break up tense moments. This is a genuinely funny movie that still manages to mix in impressive action sequences — a combination that makes this nearly 3-hour film feel much shorter and yet still epic in scale.
The only way to describe this episode is "super special" considering the person in the spotlight: Milwaukee-born director Michael Schultz! Milwaukee Film introduced a new annual award named in his honor that recognizes luminary Black directors who have profoundly impacted culture and the film industry. Schultz himself will be the first recipient and, very deservedly, will get a full weekend of programming at the Oriental Theatre on Sept. 12 and 13.Dori and Kpolly delve into Schultz on this episode with a discussion about his prolific career directing for the stage and screen, his groundbreaking moment as the first Black director nominated at the Cannes Film Festival, and a look at some of his outstanding work, including The Last Dragon.*****Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co. and our wonderful Radio Milwaukee members.
Dori is flying solo for this episode, but she made sure to keep the pod well-populated by inviting filmmakers Alex Lamb and Max Well to chat about their new documentary, The Donn of Tiki. This is a story that demanded to be told: A man living a life that makes it nearly impossible to separate fact from fiction while inadvertently creating the tiki subculture. The entire tale of Donn Beach is a wild one and extends all the way back to his birth, the location of which remains up in the air. He was a bootlegger and rum-cocktail inventor with mob ties who used his authentic love for Polynesian culture to become "the founding father of tiki.”Alex and Max share how they discovered old tapes with Donn's actual voice, used perfectly suited stop-motion animation to bring him to life, and wound up with enough material for an early cut that was three hours long. They also talk about how they whittled down that runtime and came up with a narrative approach for an unreliable narrator — something you can see for yourself at a screening of The Donn of Tiki this Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Oriental Theatre, followed immediately by a Q&A with the filmmakers.*****Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.

Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.The Milwaukee Film Festival doesn't stop after week one, so neither do we!We're into the second phase of the annual event, and in the extremely remote chance you thought Dori and Kpolly would run out of films to talk about, rest assured that the folks at Milwaukee Film have provided plenty to cover.Speaking of those folks, programming director Kerstin Larson is back! If you want to get technical about how we record these things, she actually never left … but still. It's great to have an insider like Kerstin helping us sort through the 96(!) features and oodles of short programs across five screens at the Oriental and Downer theaters. On this episode, the trio briefly hit on the unique environment of a film festival, the excitement around seeing these projects that aren't always what you expect, and how going to a theater will always (always!!!) kick the rear end of watching a movie at home.Milwaukee Film Festival picks: Week 2What Happened to Dorothy Bell? After uncovering disturbing revelations from her early childhood involving her late grandmother, Ozzie Gray sets out to investigate her past. Desperate for answers, she attempts to communicate with Dorothy's spirit but unwittingly awakens something malevolent.Midnight ShortsWho doesn't love a little mayhem? Your inner monster will thank you for this night of kooky comedies, hair-raising horror and cRuNCHy sqUISHYyy battles between flesh and … is that Cate Blanchett?! It's a late-night party so unhinged, you can only see it after midnight. OK, it starts at 10 p.m. … but maybe it'll go until midnight?BalomaniaThe culture and work of Brazilian baloeiros — secret groups of men who craft and launch intricate hot-air balloon art — deserve a place on the big screen. This epic portrayal captures the free-spirited artistry and subculture, showcasing a raw, authentic exploration of Brazilian masculinity.HarvestOver seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears. Tsangari's follow up to 2015's Chevalier, this tragicomic take on a Western follows townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry Jones) and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent (Harry Melling), childhood friends who are about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity. The Milwaukee Show (One and Two)Each year, The Milwaukee Show is one of the hottest tickets of the festival — a rare chance to see work from our local best and brightest in the gloriously opulent setting of our beloved Oriental Theatre's Abele Cinema. This collection of stunning shorts allows you to watch locally, yet think globally.40 AcresIn a post-apocalyptic future where food is scarce, the last descendants of a Black family of farmers who settled in Canada after the American Civil War must protect their homestead from an organized militia hell-bent on taking their land. Structured like a typical apocalypse film, 40 Acres subverts expectations in ways that will leave you breathless. Magic FarmA film crew working for an edgy media company travels to Argentina to profile a local musician, but their ineptitude leads them into the wrong country. As the crew collaborates with locals to fabricate a trend, unexpected connections blossom while a pervasive health crisis looms unacknowledged in the background.
We don't exactly keep rock-solid statistics for this sort of thing, but to the best of our recollection, this episode of Cinebuds sets a new land-speed record for sheer number of movies mentioned in a single episode. Given the topic, that shouldn't come as a surprise. In addition to being a Cinebud, Dori Zori is 88Nine's morning host and — this next one is an unofficial title — queen of the station's International Women's Day programming. She got that particular tradition started a decade ago, putting her passion for female, femme and female-identifying artists on the air for all to hear.So you know we weren't going to let March pass by without a Cinebuds episode devoted to impactful women in the movie industry. Dori and Kpolly name drop more than 30 films during their chat, in addition to giving general co-signs to the work of Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. They also point out a few individuals who may not be quite as well-known to movie lovers, like film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who has worked alongside director Martin Scorsese for more than five decades. We did our best to collect all the movies they mentioned and sort them in the lists below. Take a look at your options and host your own screening this March and all year round.Women's History Month moviesStarring roles9 to 5, starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane FondaCoffy, starring Pam Grier (showing at the Oriental Theatre from March 20-22)Stormy Weather, starring Lena HorneGaslight, starring Ingrid BergmanA League of Their Own, starring Geena DavisPrivate Benjamin, starring Goldie HawnStar Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, starring Carrie FisherDirector's cutThe Future, directed by Miranda JulyKajillionaire, directed by Miranda JulyMe and You and Everyone We Know, directed by (and starring) Miranda JulyCertain Women, directed by Kelly ReichardtFirst Cow, directed by Kelly ReichardtYou Were Never Really Here, directed by Lynne RamsayLemon, directed by Janicza BravoZola, directed by Janicza BravoThe Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn BigelowThe Fire Inside, directed by Rachel MorrisonBehind the scenesThe Departed, edited by Thelma Schoonmaker (showing at the Oriental Theatre on March 25)Black Panther, cinematography by Rachel MorrisonFruitvale Station, cinematography by Rachel MorrisonDope, cinematography by Rachel Morrison

One of the prominent talking points around recent Best Picture nominee The Brutalist is the level of commitment it asks of its audience. Tipping the scales at a hefty 214 minutes, the film is thoughtful enough to include an intermission as it tells a tale about the complexity of creation, collaboration and capitalism. With more than three and a half hours of movie to talk about, our hosts have ample opportunity to share thoughts about the latest from director Brady Corbet — well, one of them does anyway. An unfortunate household appliance situation interrupted Kpolly's attempt to see The Brutalist, leaving Dori as our lone Cinebud with opinions to offer.Fortunately, this just so happens to be a “very special guest” episode featuring not one but TWO podcast debutants: Milwaukee Film's Kelsey Parks and Kevin Rice!We asked the organization's technical manager and technology director to join us because this film is a bit of a technological marvel because of its … film. With an assist from IMDb, here's a quick explainer:The film was shot entirely in VistaVision, a widescreen format that runs 35mm film horizontally through the camera to create eight perforation film frames, twice the size and resolution of standard four perforation 35mm. The film was then released in theaters with 70mm film prints. … This is the first American film in 61 years to be entirely shot in the format, the last being My Six Loves (1963). Director Brady Corbet explained: "It just seemed like the best way to access that period (1950s) was to shoot on something that was engineered in that same decade."It's one thing to read about the unique filming approach and another to actually show it to audiences. Kelsey and Kevin have the insiders' perspectives on what it took to get The Brutalist on the big screen at the Oriental Theatre, which is one of a shrinking number of venues across the country equipped to project 70mm film. Then there's the workout the Oriental Theatre's projectionists get with every screening. Each reel weighs roughly 40 pounds, and they need to be changed every 40 minutes without audiences noticing the transitions. It's a really interesting look behind the curtain (or into the projection booth) that we're proud to provide in this episode.
Traditions make the holiday season what it is. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. A treasured decoration hanging in a place of honor on the tree. The annual viewing of Stanley Kubrick's psycho-sexual thriller Eyes Wide Shut.Maybe you don't venture outside the lines quite that much, but Milwaukee Film's "Season's Screenings" holiday series sure does. In honor of the adventurous range of selections being shown at the Oriental Theatre through Jan. 1, Dori and Kpolly have a spirited conversation about what we watch around this time of year, roast a few and unwrap the ones they might not be quite as familiar with (perhaps Tangerine or Tokyo Godfathers). To see the full lineup of films, along with links to purchase tickets, go to our story on the Radio Milwaukee website.
Forget the chicken and the egg. Nevermind the sound of one hand clapping. Let's answer something truly difficult:What's your favorite Keanu Reeves movies? That's what Dori and Kpolly bravely take on in this episode of Cinebuds, which takes inspiration from the Keanuthon currently underway at the Oriental Theatre. As you follow along with our duo's typically high-minded conversation, ponder your own preference when it comes to the filmography of Keanu Reeves. Do you go for the clueless comedic version in the Bill & Ted series? The “in over his head” action star of Point Break and The Matrix? The “man of few words but many guns” from the John Wick series?Dori and Kpolly run through all the Keanus in this episode and hopefully discuss why Milwaukee Film didn't include his best role — Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 — in the Keanuthon that runs through the end of the month.

A medical historian tells us about how women's health has been shaped by generations of predominantly male practitioners. Then, we talk to the author of a bill that would protect the Mississippi River basin. Then, we we learn about the Oriental Theatre’s restored vintage film organ and the history of movie music.
The nearly century-old pipe organ brings back the original magic of 1920s movie palaces.

Brian Ritchie, bassist for the folk punk band the Violent Femmes, joins host Kenneth Womack on this episode to chat about his first Beatles records and the 40th anniversary of the Femmes' debut album. Ritchie co-founded the Violent Femmes with percussionist Victor DeLorenzo in 1981, and the duo were later joined by singer-songwriter Gordon Gano. Ritchie came up with band's distinctive name on a whim, employing it during their early days playing in Milwaukee's coffee houses. In August 1981, the Violent Femmes were discovered performing on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre by James Honeyman-Scott, the guitarist for the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde invited the Femmes to play an acoustic set prior to the Pretenders' show that night. In 1983, the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut album, which emerged as a key soundtrack for the burgeoning alternative and college-oriented rock movements. The inaugural LP featured many of the band's best-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” The album became the Femmes' most successful LP, eventually earning platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the years, the Femmes have recorded 10 studio albums, including Hallowed Ground (1984), The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), and Why Do Birds Sing? (1991). The group is widely considered to be a key influence on the 1980s and 1990s alternative rock scene. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support
