Zadie Smith grew up in north west London and studied English at Cambridge University. After a publisher's bidding war when she was just 21, her debut novel White Teeth became a huge critical and commercial hit on publication in 2000 and won several awards including the Orange Prize, now known as the Women's Prize for Fiction, and the Whitbread first novel award. Since then, with books including On Beauty, NW and Swing Time, Zadie Smith has established herself as one of the world's most successful and popular living novelists, renowned for her witty dialogue and explorations of cultural identity, class and sexuality. Her most recent book The Fraud is her first historical novel. Zadie Smith talks to John Wilson about her upbringing in Willesden, North West London, with her Jamaican born mother and white English father. She chooses C S Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as an early formative influence and remembers how its themes of danger, power and betrayal were intoxicating to her as a young reader. Zadie talks about the creative influence of her husband, the poet Nick Laird, and of the cultural impact of a trip she made to west Africa in 2007 which inspired much of her 2016 novel Swing Time. She also reflects on her role as an essayist who in recent years, has increasingly written about global political and social issues.Producer: Edwina Pitman

About Bishop Rob Before his appointment as Chief Executive of CUF, Robert Wickham served as the Bishop of Edmonton since September 2015. He was a Curate in the Parish Church of Willesden, a Team Vicar in the Parish of Old St Pancras, with a particular responsibility for St Mary's Somers Town, and then for nine years as Rector of St John at Hackney, latterly becoming Area Dean of Hackney. Rob grew up in suburban Surrey, and attended Hampton School. He then went to University in Durham, where he studied geography, especially urban regeneration, and perceptual geography. He then studied for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. Since ordination Rob has completed an MA in Theology, Politics and Faith Based organisations from King's College. His thesis, now published, was based upon the political theology of Joshua Watson, the great Church Schools pioneer from the eighteenth century. In addition, a period of study leave led Rob to write a theological thesis on the creative use of church buildings. Indeed, whilst Rector of Hackney, the Church of St John at Hackney was reordered so that most aspects of Hackney life could be experienced, from concerts by Coldplay, Gary Barlow and Emilie Sande, jobs fairs, credit unions, to the most used knife amnesty bin in London. The reordering led to a reordering of its relationship with the local community, which became so needed in the aftermath of the disturbances in 2011.

"El Hombre de los Relojes" (en inglés The Story of the Man With the Watches) es un relato corto escrito por Arthur Conan Doyle en 1898. Pertenece a la serie Round the Fire de The Strand Magazine. His acting talents have appeared in huge tv series like Channel 4's Inbetweeners and Derek, to BBC's Doctor Who, The Split and Damilola, Our Loved Boy to name but a handful. Often his comedy, music and acting talents overlap; he's very good at all of these things so why wouldn't he often combine them. We first spoke to Marion Turner, an English professor at Oxford University, in 2019, about her award-winning biography of Geoffrey Chaucer. In her latest book, The Wife of Bath: A Biography, Turner paints an unconventional portrait of Chaucer's most famous—and clearly favorite—character: a bawdy, middle-aged, middle-class woman of multiple marriages. Alison of Bath is but one of the pilgrims Chaucer gathers around the table in his Canterbury Tales, but she is the only one to have inspired everyone from Shakespeare to James Joyce to Zadie Smith—and an equal number of misogynist critics, whether they were writing on vellum or in a 20th-century academic journal. Turner joins us on the podcast to discuss the Wife of Bath in her time and beyond, and why her voice still rings out with such force today.Go beyond the episode:Marion Turner's The Wife of Bath: A BiographyListen to our previous interview with Turner about Geoffrey Chaucer's lifeWatch Jean “Binta” Breeze perform her adaptation of Chaucer's tale, “The Wife of Bath in Brixton Market”Read Zadie Smith's play, The Wife of Willesden (which you can see performed this month with its original star if you happen to find yourself in Cambridge, Massachusetts)Read Patience Agbabi's poem “The Wife of Bafa” or watch her perform it at the modern version of the Tabard Inn—a breweryTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. We've wanted to interview Catherine Marks since we started the pod and so we were delighted to finally get a chance to sit down and talk to her at the beginning of the year. An Australian by birth, producer and mixer Catherine is now based in London England. She begun her career after a chance meeting with super producer flood at a Nick Cave concert in the early 2000s. Abandoning a career in architecture she moved to London full time to assist at his legendary Assault and Battery Studios in Willesden. Engineering work on albums by artists such as PJ Harvey, Foals, and Interpol followed. Despite initially following a career in mixing her work on Wolf Alice's Creature Songs E.P led her to take the producer's chair on albums by some of the 21st century's most exciting rock and alternative acts including the amazons, The Big Moon, The Mysterines, Manchester Orchestra and The Wombats. She also recently worked on ALanis Morrisette's 2020 come back album Such Pretty Forks in the Road. In 2018 she was voted the Music producers guild Producer of the year . She recently moved to her own new studio space in Kensal Town and this is where she dialed in to talk to us. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. The multi-award winning, best-selling novelist Zadie Smith's first play makes it's world premiere on Wednesday. The comedy, The Wife of Willesden, is an adaptation of The Wife of Bath's tale from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. The 14th Century medieval text, written in rhyming couplets has been translated into a contemporary story set in north-west London, where she was born and raised. The BBC's arts correspondent, Rebecca Jones, speaks to Zadie Smith in her only UK interview. (Image: Zadie Smith, Credit: Getty Images)

Luther Blissett is an English footballing legend, and one of the greatest players this country has ever produced, but the beautiful game isn't his only true love. Luther's other lifelong passion is cars. From his early days growing up in Willesden, Northwest London when he and his brother used to buy cars on the cheap, take them apart and rebuild them, Luther is an unapologetic petrolhead, especially when the mention of an electric future is raised! He's owned an eclectic collection of classics over the years, and talking of classics, Luther finally tells the story of the day he had that now infamous accident in a Morgan at the Silverstone Classic!

What will you be doing on Sunday afternoon? You could look to Cornwall where the G7 will draw to a close and a group of young Christians will meet at Truro Cathedral. There they will bless a wicker boat to be carried in relay to Glasgow in time for the UN Climate Change Conference in October. Edward Stourton asks if they can really hope to change minds with the trip and finds out why they're carrying the boat. Or maybe you'll spend your Sunday afternoon doing something else entirely. As England takes to the pitch for its first Euros encounter, Edward speaks to the Bishop of Willesden who includes Wembley in his diocese. How does this football loving cleric feel about the Euro's theme song which talks about broken churches and broken dreams. Is football the only answer? Also in the programme, the race against time to save some extraordinary murals in a London Church. The now flaking paintings are by the German Jewish artist Hans Freibusch who was exhibited in Hitler's infamous "degenerate art" exhibition of 1937. As a refugee in the UK, he was commissioned by the Church of England and painted more murals than any other artist in the church's history. And Edward hears from a survivor of the Children of God cult that began in the counter culture of late 1960s America but spread throughout the world. It came to be known as The Family and was dogged by allegations of child abuse and psychological manipulation. Followers believed that God was love and love was sex, so there should be no limits, regardless of age. Faith Morgan joins Edward to talk about her memoir of her upbringing in the sect and eventual escape at the age of 19.
