Just because ANORA wears the Oscars' Best Picture crown doesn't mean the movies nominated turn to dust. In fact, as the Best Picture nominees slowly trickle out to home video, discussing them feels more pertinent. A movie's lifespan isn't limited to the awards calendar, especially when it comes to WICKED.Jon M. Chu's fantasy musical, based on the Broadway show, vacuumed up the world's cash to the tune of nearly $750 million, a testament to the musical's 20+ year success. This thing's been around long enough on its own to discuss it in generational terms. But WICKED owes it all to THE WIZARD OF OZ, being a prequel exploring the college years of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda (Ariana Grande), who will be known later in life as the Wicked Witch and Good Witch, respectively.Grande's lovably bubbly narcissism makes me laugh. Even the camera can't stop following her hair flips and flighty trots across the sets. Erivo seems incapable of playing a false note. They carry years worth of pain behind a restrictive, poised demeanor, presenting confidence as a defense tower. Our technicolor understanding of the land of Oz is muted by a change in perspective. We're not from Kansas anymore, Toto. Director of photography and frequent Chu collaborator Alice Brooks gives Oz a more tactile, European feel, at times flooding the background with natural light that gives the sets a lived-in presence. This isn't a Marvel Studios CGI nightmare (for the most part). But this idea of a realistic Oz, marked by more serious ventures into ANIMAL FARM-esque allegories for fascist subjugations within a caste system, doesn't always gel with the magic or whimsy WIZARD OF OZ is known for. It feels as though each creative grabbed their own idea of what WICKED should be and stretched it in said direction. The result is something that doesn't coalesce but I'll be damned if I say I didn't have fun with it.Though I'm still stunned Chu got a Critics' Choice Award for Best Director. Go home; y'all are drunk.---Please rate, review & subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Instagram & Bluesky: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

It was recently announced that Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, The Color Purple) would star as Jesus in an upcoming concert staging of the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, this summer at the Hollywood Bowl. The news that Erivo will appear in the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice written show, has been met with some overblown backlash, and accusations of blasphemy and disrespect. In today's stagey news recap, we're talking through why this isn't the case, by examining the history of this particular show, and considering the larger problem of misogynoir in society. •About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Wicked has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Cynthia Erivo, who already has Grammy, Emmy and Tony awards under her belt. This week, Kara talks with Erivo about why, as a queer, Black woman, the role of Elphaba was especially meaningful and how she made it her own; what she thinks about the current attack on diversity programs and the LGBTQ+ community; which projects she wants to lend her voice and other talents to going forward; and what becoming the youngest EGOT winner (if she wins the Oscar) would mean to her. Hosts Mike and Kenny discuss the blockbusting film adaptation of Act 1 of the musical Wicked which stars Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande. Directed by Jon M. Chu. Wicked Pt. 1offers the back story of The Wizard of Oz's Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West as well as the Wizard. Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, a child conceived via an affair with green skin and rejected by her father. Ariana Grande stars as Galinda, born into wealth and influence and seemingly perfect. Galinda and Elphaba become roommates and rivals at Shiz University where both quickly become the center of attention, and eventually friends.  The film features outstanding vocal performances by Erivo and Grande as well as very strong visuals and production design. Jeff Goldbloom co-stars as the Wizard with Michelle Yeoh co-starring as Madame Morrible, the professor of magic.  Jonathan Bailey co-stars as the romantic Prince Fiyero. Faith Spotted: The question of God in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Where does evil / wickedness come from? The ability for narratives to cast wickedness on those undeserving of it as well as hide the wickedness and evil of others. Though our faith teaches we are all born into sin, what roll does environtmental elements and circumstances play in becoming evil/wicked?  All persons are created by and are beloved children of God, therefore as persons of faith we are called to respect and preserve the agency of "others" regardless of their faith or place.  As Christians we can celebrate the defeat of evil and the removal of the threat of evil and wickedness but we are not to celebrate the suffering or death of those who commit evil or wicked acts as this violates Christ's command to love all persons, even our enemies, as well as the command to forgive even one's enemies. While it can seem impossible, we are called to do so and can be empowered by God to do so. Persons of the Christian faith are not to blame persons or punish them for the sins of others.   Article with novelist Gregory Maguire regarding faith present in Wicked. https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2024/11/20/q-and-wicked-author-gregory-maguire-souls-saints-religion-oz-249323

If you're unfamiliar with the plot of Broadway stunner, Wicked, fear not, director Jon M. Chu's (Crazy Rich Asians) big screen adaptation is a splashy note-for-note faithful interpretation of the acclaimed musical. If your gateway is Gregory Macguire's book by the same name, expect more committment to the musical's book than his source material. Wicked, a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, tells the story of the classic's central villian Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West and it's symbol of goodness, Glinda the Good Witch of the South. It's story opens with a Glinda arriving in Munchkinland in a glimmering bubble. To confirms for the citzenry that the witch is dead. It's a majestic start complete with a spectacular ensemble number.  Under Chu's stewardship OZ comes to sparkling life. There are recognizable set pieces as well as a more expansive look at the land of OZ.  The film adaptation retains the "PG" light touch by inferring much more than showing the darkness decending upon the land. Cynthia Erivio and Arian Grande-Butera are hands down a triumph as the film's Elphaba and Glinda. Both their vocals and dramatic interpretation of the leads distinguish their performances from any that've come before. In this meticulously built world the duo lead their talent-packed ensemble to create one of the best film-adaptation of a stage production ever. Wicked offers plenty for those longing for bright and colorful escapism. You'll laugh, gasp, and be amazed at each cinematic success (enough to forgive its varied visual effects shortfalls).  The narrative leans heavily on its cast for its emotional peaks and valleys and they more ably respond. Christopher Scott's propulsive choreography delivers again and again. Erivo's blend of stoicism and defensive boldness aid a growing necessary edge. While Grande's pitch perfect switches between self-absorbsion, ambitious, perky benevolence adds the bounce and flair. Each balancing out the other in a delightful chemistry. But Holzman and Fox' decision to add only hints of the novel's deeper themes expose a script that fails to fully serve the narrative underpining all the visual pizzazz. Every shallow plot point and thin (secondary) character development between musical numbers turns into glaring oversight in the spotlight of Wicked's exhaustive runtime. So. if you were hoping that the extended (2 hours 40 minute) runtime - and cutting the story into two films - meant more (extremely important) parts of Macguire's Wicked would find its way into the screenplay, well then you'll likely come away disappointed. Perhaps the second half of this story coming November of 2025 will fill in those gaps. But despite this missed opportunity hindering Wicked from truly defiying gravity, its technical prowess behind and in front of the camera are worth a watch. Chu's sprawling production brings this origin story to life such verve and vibrancy your inner song-and-dance loving kid will not leave dissatisfied. Listen as Ro and Phenom discuss Wicked and somehow manage to keep it spoiler-free Wicked opens in theaters Friday, November 22. ♦♦ Director: Jon M. Chu Writers: Winnie Holzman, Dana Fox Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum Runtime: 2 Hour 40 Minutes Synopsis: Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. A Note from Hope Katz Gibbs, founder and producer, Inkandescent Radio — Odds are good that you have read Gregory Macguire’s bestseller, “Wicked,” seen the Broadway show (millions around the world have), and/or are anticipating the release of the film version this month. So, it is a great pleasure to share the interview I had the privilege of doing with him for The Costco Connection. Gregory allowed me to record and produce our conversation for our Authors Between the Covers Show on InkandescentRadio and Inkandescent.tv). On our PR & Publishing Co. site, Inkandescent.us, you can also read our Q&A. Stay tuned for the article in the Costco Connection in November. Best of all, you’ll get to see Part One of Wicked in November! Scroll down to learn more about the film! About the movie: Wicked (also known as Wicked: Part One) is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which was based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel of the same name and characters from L. Frank Baum‘s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, with Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode (in her film debut), Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, and Peter Dinklage in supporting roles. Set in the Land of Oz, largely before Dorothy Gale‘s arrival from Kansas, the plot follows green-skinned Elphaba and her path to ultimately becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside an unlikely friendship and later rivalry with a classmate who later becomes Glinda the Good. Theatrical release in the United States is scheduled for November 22, 2024, with Wicked: Part Two slated for November 26, 2025. Universal Pictures announced the adaptation in 2012 with Marc Platt as a producer. After a long development and multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in their respective roles in 2021. Principal photography began in December 2022 in England, paused in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, eventually resuming then concluding in January 2024.

It's crazy but this is our first Oscar podcast of the 2019/2020 awards season! With Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Telluride and Toronto behind us the Oscar season prospects are coming into view. Some things that looked strong in spring and now wilting in the fall, while others have emerged as frontrunners. I am joined (for the first time) by AwardsWatch's own Mina Takla. Mina hit Cannes and TIFF for AW this year, knocking out over two dozen fantastic reviews and providing a much-needed looking at the non-English language selections that 2019 has to offer. TIFF 19 Wrap-Up: From jokers to popes and birds to hustlers, here are the Best Films and Performances of the Toronto International Film Festival In this podcast, we begin discussing Mina's experience at TIFF and the films and performances he liked the best. We end that section talking about the Grolsch People's Choice winner Jojo Rabbit and its runners-up Marriage Story and Parasite, which propels us into the Oscar conversation. We cover Best Picture, Best Actor (with a focus on Joaquin Phoenix and Adam Driver), Best Actress (with a focus on Renée Zellweger and Cynthia Erivo), Documentary Feature and dabble in the supporting categories, as well as the historical potential of the Best Director category having more than woman director and/or two Asian directors with Bong Joon-ho (Parasite) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) both in contention, on our way to closing out with the huge success and awards potential of Hustlers and the potential for Jennifer Lopez. My apologies in advance for some of the audio. Something's a bit buggy with my side of the recording (and yes, that clickety-clack is me) lately and I'm still working it out. Thank you for your patience! This podcast is 1h 17m with music. As we did in the first part, we break down another 7 categories at the Academy Awards, and we hit on all of the major contenders while doing so. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood remains center stage, but we also hype up some more contenders like Harriet, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Little Women, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, The Last Thing He Wanted, The Laundromat, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, & many more. We also talk about some major stars along the way like Brad Pitt, our friend Willem Dafoe, Helen Mirren, Kristen Stewart, and of course, Quentin Tarantino. The episode format leads to some fun discussions. Toy Story 4 seems like its in a two picture race for Animated Feature with Frozen 2. CATS probably has good make-up, Downton Abbey may have some pretty damned good costumes, and Sam Mendes movies like 1917 probably have incredible cinematography. But on the flipside, we also think John Litgow will wear a well-made fat suit, Little Women is one of many period pieces where the dresses will be sewn with impeccable taste, and the Harriet set photos are stunning. So again, we preview each of these races with points & counterpoints, and with our picks for frontrunners, likely nominations, and wildcards. Stay tuned for Part 3, where we’ll finish the Mid-Year Report and build up to an overview of the Best Picture category. We’ll also have a major announcement about another new weekly show on the next MMOW. Hint, hint - it’s gonna be Oscar related. So we’ll have a lot to discuss in the coming months regarding this fast approaching awards season, and we’ll be doing a lot of what we do best - break down the Oscars! On that note, we’ll be doing many more Oscar Sprint Profile movie reviews. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters next week, and we also plan on covering The Farewell, The Kitchen, Luce, Where’d You Go Bernadette, and The Goldfinch. And those are just the next flurry of contenders coming out through early September. There’s a whole bunch more for us to cover throughout the fall and winter leading into red carpet season. As always, we want to know how you see the race. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. The Harold and Maudecast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2019 91:30

Episode 353 of The Harold & Maudecast features Sarah and Jake's guide to Summer 2019 Movies that won't suck (fingers crossed). We go through the list of what's dropping June, July and August and give our picks for ones to go see in the theaters. We also review two movies now streaming, Deadwood: The Movie and Bad Times at the El Royale. It's been a long time coming for Deadwood fans but the feature length film, Deadwood: The movie, gives the award-winning HBO series its badly deserved sunset ride. It's been 10 years since we visited the outpost in South Dakota, now a fully formed town equipped with a telephone and other modern amenities. All the residents (and we mean, all the entire cast re-assembled for the movie), gather to commemorate Dakota's statehood in 1889. Everyone's favorite saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) and Marshal Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant_ clash with now Senator George Hearst (Gerald McRaney). The story doesn't tie up loose threads, per say, rather choosing to move forward with the story as it has been 13 years since the show met its untimely demise. It's a smart choice. Seeing how progress has affected Deadwood and its residents seems fitting. The script, penned by show creator David Milch, is as brilliant as Shakespearean as ever in its tragic brilliance and unapologetic ugliness. We highly recommend this film, must-see for fans of the series. If you haven't seen it, go binge it immediately then watch the film. You have the advantage of being able to see it instantly rather than being left hanging over a decade. All three seasons and Deadwood: The Movie are now streaming on HBO. Bad Times at the El Royale is a mash up of Agatha Christie's, And Then There Were None and the film Four Rooms. Set on the Nevada/California border circa 1969, a group of strangers ascend upon the El Royale motel in Tahoe. Each has a secret and a past, unveiled throughout the course of one stormy, violent night. The film is written and directed by Hollywood powerhouse Drew Goddard, (The Martian, World War Z, Daredevil, Lost, Buffy the Vampire, Lost, Cabin in the Woods) and stars Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Fanning, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Cynthia Erivo and Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman's son) in a breakout role. From the open sequence the film looks both cool and creepy, which is exactly what you want in a mystery. The first half continues to allude with the promise of classic mystery twists and turns. Unfortunately, the introduction of Hemsworth, who is horribly miscast as the Manson-esque psycho killer, re-routes the story in a trite and predictable direction. Still worth watching for the performances, Bridges, Pullman and British actress Erivo who charms with her renditions of Motown classics. Also in this episode, highlights from E3 2019. It’s 1969. Four guests check into the El Royale Hotel: a priest (Jeff Bridges), a vacuum salesman (Jon Hamm), a singer (Cynthia Erivo), and a hippie (Dakota Johnson). They all - save one - have something mysterious going on behind the scenes and the hotel itself is not what it appears to be. When they check in, there’s a storm a-brewin'. Join Guy, Karen, Margaret, and producer/film festival programmer/Who Shot Ya contributor and now Pop Rocket guest Drea Clark as they pick apart Drew Goddard’s neo-noir ensemble Bad Times at The El Royale. They get into the movie's twists, turns, non-linear construction, Cynthia Erivo's breakout performance, and how it's kind of likeQuentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, but not nearly as macho. All Abouts Drea is all about a long read article from The Texas Monthly called The Love Story that Upended the Texas Prison System about the alliance and romantic relationship between a lawyer and an inmate that ultimately brought attention to a nationwide scandal and disrupted the system of abuse of prisoners in Texas. Margaret is all about the second season of the Slate podcast Slow Burn, which covers the impeachment of former president Bill Clinton. Karen is all about The LA Dodgers pulling ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers (as of last Wednesday) in the National League Championship Series. Guy is all about Glenn Close's performance in her new movie The Wife. That's My Jam Karen - Trashcan Sinatras - All Night Margaret - Alvvays - In Undertow. Today we speak to Bo (https://twitter.com/eBoPeep) about a recent controversy revolving UK-born Nigerian-descended actress Cynthia Erivo and the announcement that she would be playing Harriet Tubman in an upcoming American movie production. Bo pulled up and documented a lot of Cynthia Erivo's problematic tweets on Twitter about American Blacks to make the case that Erivo shouldn't be playing an American Black icon like Harriet Tubman. Bo is a proud descendant of American and Caribbean enslaved peoples, and particularly passionate about current American DOS issues. She believes in applying a long-term, holistic and sober view to "I'm rooting for everyone Black." She also believes in the immediate necessity of honoring and protecting our respective and unique cultures, lineages, boundaries, experiences, and justice claims throughout the Diaspora. The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, straddle state lines with this week's review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018). Set in a rundown casino hotel where almost nothing is as it seems, the film features a number of familiar faces including Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson and Chris Hemsworth. It also marks a career-making turn from Cynthia Erivo, who also makes a splash in Widows (2018) next month. Written, directed and produced by former Daredevil showrunner Drew Goddard, Bad Times at the El Royale includes twist upon twist and is sure to keep you guessing until the end. In spite of its dark subject matter, the film manages to captivate and delight throughout its two-hour-plus runtime.

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

John Doyle is a Scottish stage director of musicals and plays, as well as operas. He has served as artistic director at several regional theatres in the United Kingdom, where he has staged more than 200 professional productions during his career spanning over 40 years. For his 2005 Broadway production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, he won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. He also directed A Catered Affair, the Off-Broadway production of Road Show, Kiss Me, Kate, an opera production of Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and The Visit. He received his third Tony nomination for his direction of the revival of The Color Purple starring Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Hudson. The Broadway production won the Tony awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Erivo's performance as Celie. He recently became the Artistic Director of the off-Broadway theater Classic Stage Company, located in the East Village in New York City. Listen to John talk about his new gig, as well as . . . How he “stumbled” into directing. Where the idea for Actors playing instruments in Sweeney Todd came from. The biggest difference between directing in New York and directing in London. Which Actors drive him crazy, and why that’s a good thing (and yes, he names names!). The one piece of advice he would give to every Broadway Producer in the business. Enjoy this master class in directing from a man who has slayed dramaturgical dragons on both sides of the pond!
